An additional note for our viewers: I neglected to mention that the basin-soaking method for felt hats should generally only be used with softer, "crushable" varieties, rather than stiffer options (which are best left to the care of professional hatters). I don't think any other TH-cam channel could captivate me for 20 minutes on cleaning techniques for something I don't even own yet. Testament to the quality of production.
Okay, I found this channel because I wanted some hat info... I'm a female who loves wearing a variety of hat styles, and that includes classic fedoras. But I must admit that, besides being a history buff, I've explored many of the other subjects because I just really enjoy seeing these sartorical men looking so spiffy. I'll never get tired of that... we need more gentlemen like that today who appear to care about their personal presentation. We ladies truly appreciate it! Hopefully it carries over from dress to behavior.
Your concerns over modern men's deteriorating dress habits is a common complaint I hear from women. The short explanation is that men are deterred from looking good because modern women clearly feel intimidated by gentlemen, because it undercuts their power play.
@@rastrats Wow... I don't know if I buy into that! I have daughters that love a well-dressed man. I think there are way too many females that run around looking like slobs these days, too. Probably not ones working & living in Manhatten, or in a swanky area near the Florida coasts or out in LA, but average America. I don't even want to step a toe out my front door without my cosmetic enhancements and proper jewelry accessorizing my ensemble whether I'm dressed for work or casual. I don't own a lot of very dressy clothes, but lets just say no one is embarrassed taking me to a restaurant. I do see some men intimidated by seeing me well coiffed. It depends on their age. But the trend in dress for men is to not put a lot of effort in unless you work in a high end office. I worked in a university dept and it was super casual for younger profs and scientists. To the point of looking like they came from doing yard work! And why would men be concerned about intimidating a woman? That goes against anthropology. The man is supposed to attract the female with his appearance of being "put together well" and a "good provider". Nope.... can't say that I agree with your premise. Our heads turn for a nice looking gent who looks like he put some effort into a nice appearance. We are not intimidated by it... it turns us on, silly man!

I stopped by trial and error fast to use my clothes brush on my Panama hat, none of my hats have stains yet just keeping the dust away however I will get a softer hat brush for my wool hats. Great video Gentlemen and congratulations on hitting one million! James
I have my great grandfather's silk felt top hat from 1910. I clean it once a year but it has a special box for it and I rarely need to wear it now everyone I know is married
For me the best way when is out of shape or is very dirty, is to give it to a hatter that clean and re-shape it, but if you keep away your hat from becoming dirty it can stay clean for 50 years and beyond (my Borsalino from 1970 had never visit a hatter)
Another great video! I really appreciate Preston's manner of telling. By the way, what do you think of making a top list of the most stylish gentlemen of the past and present?
Question for your boater hat video outfit Preston! How formal do you consider this outfit you put centered around your boater? Is it good enough to show up to a college spring formal night event?
Hello, I truly appreciate this video. I am glad I found it before cleaning a hat for a friend. However, I am curious to how to clean a fur-felt hat as this was not covered in detail as all the other materials. I need to clean a Akubra pure fur felt hat it has sweat stain on the under side of brim located at the front and rear of the hat that were not address when the sweat occurred. As a result, the darker tan/beige hat now has sweat stain with probably some oil that appear black. Will the vinegar/water solution spot cleaning method work or should I try something else. Looking forward to guide help. Thanks again.
Side note: to give a good idea of the hat color. When you describe your summer outfit. The hat is close to or same as the light brown slack you are wearing.
Is there a possible way to fix the hat brim? The strings of the rim are detached, though not completely removed from the bottom. Is there any way to sow or reattach those strings?
Ive spritzed my hat VERY lightly with water spray bottle, wipe it gently with microfiber, and then a lint brush or lint roller (dogs). It seems to do okie. To shape i put on a kids bouncy ball on occasion, while still slight damp. Very slight damp.
Hello, I am a big fan of this channel and have enjoyed learning many things here. I have a question regarding this video: Use of soap flakes have been mentioned several times. I live in the desert southwest of the US, and need to be able to properly care for my hats, protecting them from damage due to sweat from the extreme heat here. Specifically what kind of soap flakes do you mean? I need to know so I know what to buy. Thank you in advance for your help
I do have a question, my wool trilby is covered in some flour and I want to get it off. Should I try a brush and water or take it to the shop to have I cleaned it has a lifetime warranty
Great video. The only issue I would disagree with is the requirement to put hats in their crowns - this is only really a necessity for stiffer hats with stiff brims (i.e. too hats, bowlers, homburgs and cowboy/western/country hats) as the weight of the hat will eventually flatten the brim of placed in the brim. Soft felt or straw hats that do not have a brim curved like that can be placed brim down, assuming the brim has been snapped into an up position. Indeed, some would argue that soft felt hats should be placed on their brim, as this prevents the weight of the hat distorting the shape of the crown. There is some truth to this, but the distortion to the crown of a soft hat is less significant that the distortion to the brim of a stiff hat.

So many things we need: Hat Brush! Cleaning a hat, having hats! lol I have to get used to it. Humans used to all wear head coverings all the time. For woman, hairstyle stayed in place! I'm going to bring it back.
All of the dry cleaners in my area +35 miles have horrible reviews and the ones that don't have terrible phone etiquette so I'm happy that I can do this at home and not worry about wasting money on a scam business.
I searched up a post where silk plush would be mentioned, that was a good decision. A guy actually examined silk plush on a microscope and claims to have reverse engineered it and believes that he can manufacture in small batches. I do searched up e books and as something to say about silk plush, well that might be a bit helpful.

I think ladies wearing fedoras look incredibly sexy. When my wife would wear one, I couldn't keep my hands off her (she didn't mind, either :-)

Love all the humor and practical tips here, especially as someone newer to wearing nice hats; thanks Preston and Gentleman's Gazette!
Great job, guys. I learned a lot from your in-depth research 🧐
Excellent timing-I just bought two more hats! Thanks again, gentlemen. Well done as always.

Felt is brushed counter clockwise, only the top is brushed front to back, you can loosen the fibers if you don’t do it right.
