Hi lovely people! Let me know if you have some Questions about the build that you notice I didn't cover. I will make an update video and answer it. - Martin
I admire your attitude and life style. From the outside looking in you are busy thoughtful and looking after yourself and your family. You demonstrate a level of perfection.i.e. if it's what I wanted and it's good . i.e. your sauna then it is good. At least you have a sauna. I learned much. Thanks Wes Sprinkle. Kind words Wes, thank you. There is only one life (in this chapter of our lifebook). I've found out I need to enjoy it. Work as little as possible (with the regular job) and enjoy family and other things as much as possible. Do a job well and you do it once, take shortcuts and you end up having to do it all over again. Family life and all around is not perfect and neither is it possible to be. The sauna offers up good conversations with friends and a place to gather during long winters. It's all I wanted it to be and a bit more. Hope you are doing well and enjoying this chapter of your life. Love from Norway, Martin.
I may not live in Norway but I live in the Yukon. This is exactly the project build I needed to see. Thank you for all your hard work posting this video.
I am getting ready to build my first wood shed. I got thousands of pallets and was trying to think how I could protect the wood. A wood shed will let me process the pallet wood and protect them until I need them. I was wanting to build a sauna, but watching the video I realized I need a wood shed first. I also really appreciated the idea to use the large window, because I have a large double pane window about the same size as you used. I will probably use a metal door because I have one out of a school. I will just have to keep it painted and dry out the sauna when done enjoying it. Thanks for the video.
metal door is not recommended. It will get very warm. Also a sauna should not have painted surfaces on the inside because the heat will make the chemicals in the paint to release and it might bring unwanted odours as well. I would rather use the metal door in the shed (even though I would not use a metal door to begin with). Remember to check your pallets carefully to see if they are chemically treated or HT Heat Treated. Don't use the chemical pallets. Best of luck!
@ thanks for the advice. I will find a wooden door and so far, I have only seen Heat Treated pallets in my lot. I will not use the chemically treated pallets to build with, if I end up with some.
Historically, the sauna today is washing away all sweat and dirt. By the way, my father was born in a real smoke sauna! The cleanest place in that time. That sauna still works, as does my 94-year-old father. In Finland, sauna is everyone's way of life! No luxury!
Hi there. I'm italian, aboutbto build one, and what I love bsides the project is your lovely family. I am father of fove, all with bare feet and in contact with nature and terrain...great!!
@MartinWoodStudios really, I can't look forward to have eveyone OUTSIDE, while I am relaxing...lol. Anyway, fantastic build and really really many hints on how to do...thank you so much.
Perfect is the enemy of the good. And this is really good. Maybe next year I’ll copy you. If I finish the wood fired oven I’m already building in the garden that is 😂
this is a great video - lovely vibe and what ive read pretty on point design wise. any reason you didn't put a vapor barrier and furring on the roof? otherwise a great build, video and ending! id love to come visit. greetings from Australia.
Thank you. Its how we do the roofs/builds in norway atleast thats the way Im used to do it.. The vapor barrier is the aluminium in the "box", the flat inside roof makes sure the heat spreads evenly... I have never seen a sauna with a sloped roof (as it would be if I had the furring in the roof). DM me if you are close to Oslo 😉
Great video Matin, a lot of hard work not only to build the sauna but also to produce such a great video. When can you come to Mallorca to build me one? 😀
Again, great video. I am finishing my project now, and I had to go for plactic vapour barrier. But around the chimney I need something else. I am thinking I could use aluminium tape to stop any leaks of humidity. Where did you buy your tape? Do you remember the brand? Is it holding up that close to the chimney? Have you experienced any challenges with your build after starting using it? Thanks again!
saunapro.no was where I got the tape. I found out the plates I used in my flooring only takes 75celsius before the material will "melt"... but it has not melted. Otherwise I will upgrade my bench material to some nicer leafy tree sort when I feel for it. No challenges so far except for holding back the hordes of friends wanting to do the sauna :)
Hi! I aimed for 3x2 meters on the inside but ended up around 2,9x1,9m because I forgot to plan for the strips + panels :D. 5-6 adults... or there is room for my family of 5 + two more adults
Great Video, great job! Gave me a lot of inspiration for building my own bastu right now. One question for your concrete back covers for your stove. have you used rebar there as well within the 1 inch? Seems to be to thin for that isnt it?
Awesome! The concrete is layer is about 1,5 inches . The rebar I use I have noe idea about if it is the correct size for this slap but I have used it before with no problems on 2inch slabs for ie. a bathrooms or a larger concrete top of outdoor stairs with tiles on top with 7years of it's still good. Considering the back will not be exposed to water... just staying dry I think it be good, but I'm no expert. After 1st years use it looks the same as when I made it.... I didn't want it thicker because of weight issues and regarding heat towards the wood there is no misscoloring so I would say it works well. Best of luck!
Hi Martin, I've completed the frame and am now beginning work on the interior of the hot room. Could you please share your tips on how to make the concrete plates around the heater so shiny?
Cool! Look at the video on how I use a plastic sheat underneath the concrete and over. The bottom will later be the front. Also this is concrete called B20, which in my country is the lowest grade, meant for Basic stuff. Remember to spray the top with water for best result (i didnt). For the pillars I used B35 which will take more salt, wear and tear. More Qs?! (Make a new comment because I will not get a notice if u post and answer here). God speed 😊
This is a great sauna build video.. finally inspired me to start on my build.. I wondered if I could ask you about the glass, is it double glazing? I was thinking I would just get 8mm tempered glass and use this video to match the framing technique you used. But worried about heat loss, what kind of temperatures can your sauna get up to with that window? thanks and again, GREAT work and great to see the family involved.
Hey! Im no window expert but I belive this is a double glass window and measures around 1,6cm or so... I think 8mm will be on the thin side even though it is tempered - thinking heatloss and wobbly(if big) - easy to break, but heatloss depends on how big your window is... small will be just fine I guess. My window measures around 160x160 or something in that direction. You can oversize your sauna oven to weigh up for a "leaky" build. In my case my oven gives my sauna over 100 celsius in -15celsius... but I prefer it at 80-85c. Very happy with my build and the water evaporates from the tiles :) Each oven comes with a m3 that they are built to heat.. in my case Harvia Pro 20 gave me 8-20m3 and I built my sauna at around 14,5m3 inluding the window. (the window you have to add it's square meter to the calculations) ex.. my build I guess was around 12m3(room) + window 1,6x1,6= 2,56m2.... so 12m3 + 2,56 = 14,56m3 and well within my ovens capabilities. hope this helps you and be well and build well :D
@@MartinWoodStudios Thanks so much for this awesome reply.. I went for the Narvi 16 and also going 12m3.. window would be about a similar size to yours.. wow 100c in -15 is mega! again, great work mate.. thanks so much.
yeah I know it's not the normal way. My idea was that the ends of the flooring would start to rot before the larger beams + this way I could change the floor boards completely without having to rip apart the whole sauna. Maybe it doesn't make sense but I can not really see a big benefit in running the floor under the stud boards except for it being slightly easier/faster until the floor is laid.
@@MartinWoodStudios and that is a fantastic idea... after you stated the triple layer of flooring I sort of picked up on why you did it like that. Great build. I'll build one soon. Probably just copy yours. Thanks for the great video Martin!
Beautiful build and kämpegreat video! I'm planning my own build at this point (Swede living in California). Question - the drain/air inlet under the heater, did you have any slope to it or not? I feel I have skills to put down tiles on a flat area, but building a slope, not too sure. Anyway, curious on your experience.
I did not lay a sloped floor. My plan was to mop excess up but to my surprise the tiles get quite warm and the water evaporates. I believe because of my 10mm insulation in the floor it is enough to keep the cold out and for the tiles to become warm enough.
Awesome video. Did you end up closing in the outside/ side openings of the roof? With a "soffit" or pest/bird guarding of some kind? Thanks for any info!
@@willgunter9356 the net was some sort of glassfiber material. I didn't want to use metal because I thought there might be some condensation, but I was probably to careful. I hope I answered you Q
Thank you, Martin! Amazing video and very exciting! I'm planning to build a Sauna and will use your video as a guide with some minor changes. What kind of glass are you using? Someone told me that window glass should be tempered to be used in a Sauna, another person told me that glas should be thermo the same are used in the patio doors. I just wondering if we could use "ordinary" glass from modern plastic windows.
Hi Sergi! The glass is a normal 2-layered glass from an ordinary window used in houses. (it works very well). No need for tempered or thermo if you place it more than 50cm from oven(thats my safety distance, it might work fine with closer but I have not tested). This had a wooden frame and I had to remove it from the frame because of the paint. Never use treated wood or painted wood in a sauna. In my country they give these windows away for free when changing to 3-layered modern windows that probably is called thermo windows.
I have only done tile floor saunas and find them good. How I made mine was especially a positive surprise because the water that lingers on the floor eventually evaporate... so less work for me. In the beginning the tiles will be cold but I heat the oven for 40-60min before I use it... then they are ok... by the time I'm finished they are warm and super nice. Wood won't last as long and the water won't evaporate are my first thoughts.. but ask some finn about it, I do not have wood floor experience
Hei!
Martin, you are building a level floor, but from what I see on TH-cam, people are building a slope for the water to escape. Do you have problems with draining water?
If I had wooden floor I might need a sloped floor. My thought was that I didnt want the hassle of sloping it and I could mop it up instead. But I didnt need to, the tiles become quite warm and the water evaporate. I think because of the 1cm insulated plate under the tiles it leaves enough so the tiles become warm enough for this to happen. If you have more Qs dont answer here but write a new message because yt does not give me a notice if u answer this. Good luck!
Hats in saunas are smart -it may seem counterintuitive, but it actually insulates your brain from the heat, and makes it more comfortable to enjoy longer and warmer saunas. Recommended!
I'm not to sure. Dependent on the temperature I believe a double glass will be less prone to cracking because the layers will make the glass heat slower (there is a lot more glass + layers so outside glass will cool inside). But if the weather is not too cold I guess a single glass might work... and there is also a question of how big the glass is - but I don't really know these answers.
Hei. Helt super video! Takk! I am curious about the angle of your roof. How many degrees does it fall? What do you recommend? And what is the hight of the indoor space, from floor to ceiling? Hilsen fra Østlandet;)
Halla fellow east coast sauna lover :) Angle of roof depends on your roofing material (all has got different specs takstein, forskjellige takpapp etc). This DIY takpapp has a minimum 3 degree angle, I probably did around 6-9. Better safe than sorry right. Height after tiling and inside roof panels (+ strips/lekter) = 206cm. I guess I built 210cm from the wood floor to the 2x4 beams. Great questions! Here is my build with some details online. byggebolig.no/badstue-og-tilbehor/bygger-badstu-pa-stopte-paler-fra-bunn
I tought of it years ago but the size and layout of my property does not make this a natural add-in, unless my workshop undertook some transformation. Our neighboor rents out on airbnb ;)
its got multiple functions, so no... TEC7 is a universal, super-strong, and flexible MS Polymer that can be used as mounting adhesive, sealant, or joint filler. I think this one will suffice: DAP Dynaflex 920... if you can get it
Get rid of the hourglass. I have never seen that in a Finnish sauna. You will know when to get out. If you don't feel like getting out: throw some more water on the stove. Great video 👍
The one thing I see everyone do which makes no sense at all: first make it all air-tight with the aluminium tape, then puncture it again when putting the wooden strips in. The rationale is probably “now I can’t see the puncture so it doesn’t count”😂 Really nice build, though! 👌🏻
I'd rather have "20"(screw) holes than 120 punctures and screws... and it doesn't cost much to tape them. It's like if I am in a boat... would you rather have 20 holes or 120? :D
@@MartinWoodStudios OK well that does make sense indeed. One of these days I’m going to build one myself and surely will watch your video a bunch of times in preparation 👍🏻
I built a similar roof 6 years ago and never had problems, the metal lies thight against the roofing. Rolling this material over edges might be an idea if I rounded off them off a lot. 90 degree bends will cause a lot of stress on it and most likely shorten lifespan
Yeah Javi, that's right! I was tired about not getting found by channel name when friends asked about how they could find me on youtube. I had to allways say "Search for: How to build a owl house".... somehow The Beatles is way more famous than my 3,6k subs channel and I wasn't on the list 😂
@@MartinWoodStudios exactly, I was looking for "how to build a tawny owl nestbox" on TH-cam and I found your channel. I really like your videos and your works. Good luck with the new name!!!.🦉🦉🦉
Yes, maybe. I checked sauna satu and only saw they have 30mm insulation in Norway. I have 100mm and I bought my insulation second hand and saved a lot of money. This is a budget sauna video. I would also use different wood to sit on but again... budget. Kippis!

This had a wooden frame and I had to remove it from the frame because of the paint. Never use treated wood or painted wood in a sauna. In my country they give these windows away for free when changing to 3-layered modern windows that probably is called thermo windows.
@@MartinWoodStudios Thanks for your reply! How many hours in total have you spent on construction?
@@sergiyrudenko905 I didn't count... but it was around a 2months solo build with working part time in between.
Just found you, amazing beauty inside and outside❤
Hi. What is the first roll of roof-material that you are using? Is it common to use a double layer?

Carefull with using the våtromsplate on the floor. Nothing has happened but I found out the foam might collaps at 75°c.
great video, thank you! as you use the SAAAUOWNA do you enjoy the choice of tile floor? any downsides vs wood?
I have only done tile floor saunas and find them good. How I made mine was especially a positive surprise because the water that lingers on the floor eventually evaporate... so less work for me.
In the beginning the tiles will be cold but I heat the oven for 40-60min before I use it... then they are ok... by the time I'm finished they are warm and super nice.
Wood won't last as long and the water won't evaporate are my first thoughts.. but ask some finn about it, I do not have wood floor experience
Hell of a job 🙌🙌
Thanks Don! Come over and get some 🫠
HI! Can you write down for me the name of your sauna stove with model name. I could't catch it in your video. Kiitos!
Harvia pro 20... 8-10m3
@@MartinWoodStudios Thank you. so much!
Brother. Did you insulate the floor?
barely... those plates gives me 1cm insulation.. its enough since it's limited how long I'm going to sit there... wood - plates - tiles
This build was great. Very helpful. Thank you!
Legend, cheers mucker
Hahaha its for the hair, not for brain lol
I experience that my head/inside does not get as warm also... maybe its placebo... who knows
@@MartinWoodStudios It's science :) The hat insulates in a sauna. Good inside AND outside!
Hey, builders. What about simply glass in sauna?? Not suppose to be a specific glass?
I'm not to sure. Dependent on the temperature I believe a double glass will be less prone to cracking because the layers will make the glass heat slower (there is a lot more glass + layers so outside glass will cool inside). But if the weather is not too cold I guess a single glass might work... and there is also a question of how big the glass is - but I don't really know these answers.
love the big window :-)
🙂
you are funny). Like you way of filming
Thank you friend 🙏
Great video thanks for sharing 😀
Hei. Helt super video! Takk! I am curious about the angle of your roof. How many degrees does it fall? What do you recommend? And what is the hight of the indoor space, from floor to ceiling? Hilsen fra Østlandet;)
Halla fellow east coast sauna lover :)
Angle of roof depends on your roofing material (all has got different specs takstein, forskjellige takpapp etc).

Absolutely great! Thank you so much!
When are you planning to build a Holiday cabins for guests that want to learn all about Norway ways 🤩
I tought of it years ago but the size and layout of my property does not make this a natural add-in, unless my workshop undertook some transformation. Our neighboor rents out on airbnb ;)
Thanks
Very nise always!
can't find that wood finish anywhere, what is it?
Outside the nordics I think you must search for exterior wood stain/coat (for walls).
is tec7 basically silicon?
its got multiple functions, so no... TEC7 is a universal, super-strong, and flexible MS Polymer that can be used as mounting adhesive, sealant, or joint filler. I think this one will suffice: DAP Dynaflex 920... if you can get it
May I know how long you built it? Thank you
I spent about 2months working a 56% job on the side.... + filming this which will probably add about 10%
@ Much thanks for your answer🙏🏼The whole project is awesome. I gonna try to make one.
Mycket bra Martin och god yule!
Hehhe... litt for tidlig med jul Gordon! 😀
Does the wood stove have an air intake from outside?
If you saw the whole video you would see me making a hole in the floor underneath the oven.
@MartinWoodStudios thanks, but please forgive me that i didn't have the time to watch your video completely.
Get rid of the hourglass. I have never seen that in a Finnish sauna. You will know when to get out. If you don't feel like getting out: throw some more water on the stove. Great video 👍
I agree... hardly used it, but when I bought the door, the hourglass and temperatur gage followed :)
Awesome.
Nice sauna bro
h*ll yeah... come get some :)
The one thing I see everyone do which makes no sense at all: first make it all air-tight with the aluminium tape, then puncture it again when putting the wooden strips in. The rationale is probably “now I can’t see the puncture so it doesn’t count”😂
Really nice build, though!

I just love when Finnish people show up on my channel :)
Great job. Should last a few generations. Me next. Thanks for sharing.
im not a fan of the roof edges raised , snow melt will work its way under flashing, shoulda rolled over the edges ...
I built a similar roof 6 years ago and never had problems, the metal lies thight against the roofing. Rolling this material over edges might be an idea if I rounded off them off a lot. 90 degree bends will cause a lot of stress on it and most likely shorten lifespan
@@MartinWoodStudios thats why we use overhangs, drip edges, ect....
Have you changed your channel?... Yo was "Norwegian wood" before, that's right?
Yeah Javi, that's right! I was tired about not getting found by channel name when friends asked about how they could find me on youtube. I had to allways say "Search for: How to build a owl house".... somehow The Beatles is way more famous than my 3,6k subs channel and I wasn't on the list 😂
@@MartinWoodStudios exactly, I was looking for "how to build a tawny owl nestbox" on TH-cam and I found your channel. I really like your videos and your works.
Good luck with the new name!!!.🦉🦉🦉
Polyurethane slabs with aluminum cover are much better solution for insulation, like sauna satu or Finn foam.
Yes, maybe. I checked sauna satu and only saw they have 30mm insulation in Norway. I have 100mm and I bought my insulation second hand and saved a lot of money.
This is a budget sauna video. I would also use different wood to sit on but again... budget. Kippis!
As a Finn I approve 😊
Amen :)
I can do the hot but not the cold! 😂
tried the combo?! I'm not to happy of the cold, but with the hot it's awesome and very temporary - feels like it's health beneficial
