I'm not sure that people fully realize how triumphant this performance is. She was asked to sing it minutes before she took the stage. She did not rehearse with this orchestra. This arrangement was not in her preferred key. BUT, Miss Franklin took the opportunity and she absolutely soared like an eagle. She truly was a musical legend.
Here is a link from the Grammy producer. It's been heavily edited from the original, which I've seen several times, but you can get the gist..Pavarotti called him, the producer, just a few minutes AFTER the show went live. He had been at the event a few days earlier when she had sung it, so he knew she could. She was there at the Grammys, had already participated in a short with the Blues Brothers and was back in her dressing room. He ran up and begged her to fill in. She knew that the orchestra and chorus would have prepared for the song in Pavarotti's key, which is lower than Aretha's normal range. She asked the producer if he had a tape of the rehearsal, which he did and played it for her. After listening to it, she said, "Yes, I can sang that." ...and as they say, the rest is history. th-cam.com/video/VE_HjgJ8ZW0/w-d-xo.html
Aretha Franklin was phenomenal with her rendition of the Nussa Dorma! Her professionalism and musical talents were truly amazing and breathtaking journey!
Makes me cry and fills me with hope everytime🙏 by the way I was raised listening to opera, heard this live version a couple of years algo, so glad you reacted to this, it's a blessing to the soul 💗💐🌸🌺💗💐🌸🌺
I'm so glad I'm not the only one to literally dissolve into a puddle of tears each time hear Areatha perform this aria , Epecially this particular performance. She was simply magnificent , in a way that only SHE could be! ..... Her performance was both magical and heart wrenching in the best possible way !!😍🥺😢😭😍😍😍 BRAVA !! BRAVAAAA!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
God bless you. You have such a beautiful smile and i see the pride emulating from you during the performance from Aretha. She is my favourite artist. One of the greatest that ever lived and it is so inspiring as a black man to see the great lady take on an Opera classic that no one expected from her and slay it so beautifully being a singer myself with a love for Opera, Jazz and Classical music. We can do it too is the message it sends out. Thank you for posting! 🙏💓
This is outstanding, amazing soul ending. One of the greatest voices ever. Hopefully you don’t mind that I place a reaction request here. Feels a bit unrespectful,, but I know you love Glennis Grace. She once peformed the opera aria Habanera from Carmen in a dutch TV Show van Popster tot Operaster. Did you know that Glennis Grace didn’t get singing lessons. She is self taught. Every day, as a child she went to practice after school. Amazing Grace!!
...oh i also forgot to add Marvin Gayes version of the Star Spangled Banner...smile...also i was very moved by Miss Franklins very beautiful sense of femininity in her bows...and her walking...and blowing kisses...in this performance.....black women back then in the civil rights movement..were very aware of stagecraft and deportment onstage...that you rarely see today...the only person i saw that maintained that sense of grace...was interestingly enough...WHITNEY...there is a whole video of her bows...so lyrical...on You Tube...enjoy...
Opera with Soul, yes ha ha ha ha ha very nice. But she had guts to sing this as she clearly was not trained classical. I never seen this performance before very impressive, Thanks Debs

This is no doubt the greatest live performance ever. Chills and tears every time I watch it.
That ending….she soared to the heavens❤️

Just got goose bumps from that Aria beautiful. This seperates Aretha from other blues & jazz singers. I wish Angelina could do a duet with her.
