      @@ACCELER8TV surprising many people on the road is the fun part. Some other owner claims 4.88 sec 0-60 with summer tires and 93 octane. I haven't tested but yeah.... It's fast. Torque steer is not that bad either. It does feel faster in full auto than with paddle shifters. All the tech we get... Unbeatable package. Especially for us Canadians.

    Great review ! In the US we only get the black interior in the GT as well. No HUD, heated windshield, or digital dash. The Korean market version gets all that and a 360 camera. I want the GT for the extra horsepower/fun factor, but am willing to wait for a another 1-2 years hoping they add these features along with AWD or a limited slip. By then I may change my mind to their awesome EV6 due out later this year especially the EV6 GT !!! I own a Telluride SX Prestige for the last 2 years and it's been a dream car without the costs associated with fancy badges. KIA is killing it and I am a believer !

      I'm a KIA fan as well having owned two Sorentos in the last decade. But I wouldn't be optimistic about KIA adding features available in Korea to the US version of the K5. Every automaker equips their vehicles for a specific national market to meet a price point that depends largely on the competition they face in that market. KIA not only has a "home field advantage" in the Korean market; they face virtually no competition from Japanese brands that either have minuscule sales or none at all in Korea. (There are historical reasons for that situation. See WWII.) Adding the features you cite in the US would eliminate any price advantage KIA enjoys compared to Honda, Toyota, Nissan, or Subaru. And as much as KIA has erased the brand's image as a "cheap" vehicle in the US, it is still seen as a "value" leader. A price point higher than a Honda Accord 2.0L Touring model or a Camry V6 XSE isn't in the cards for KIA.
      If you're looking for some of the features you cite, consider the KIA Stinger with its new 2.5L turbo base engine and AWD. It's the same engine offered in the K5 GT and with AWD has an MSRP only slightly more than the K5 GT.

    Just got a 2023 K5 GT with the GT1 package in Wolf Gray, with every option available (in the U.S.) There are some big differences from the car in this video. No full digital dash is available. Analog gauges only, with a small info screen wedged in the middle. No HUD is available. Also, no Homelink mirror is available for the 2022 K5 even though it was available in the 2021 model. It looks like you can include it in a factory order on the Kia website, but you can't. I guess Kia intended to offer it but then changed their mind and just never updated their website. It's not available as a dealer installed option either and it's not listed in the OEM parts catalog. There are some other weird cost saving choices that Kia made from the Optima. No longer is there an interior handle to close the trunk. You have to actually grab the paint to close it. Also the rear window sun shades have been deleted. That said, the car still has loads of tech, looks great and is a blast to drive. As so many have mentioned, I don't know why Kia chose to offer their highest HP model without AWD or even a limited slip differential, but you only really notice it if you mash the throttle off the line.

      Don't feel too bad. The additional power of the K5 GT introduces significant issues of wheel hop and torque steer under heavy acceleration that the lower trim version doesn't have, especially if it's fitted with AWD. Not much point in a more powerful engine if you can't access its potential.

  • @stephenhendricks103
    @stephenhendricks103 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hey! Kudos for hitting the critical points about the K5 GT, especially the reason that AWD isn't offered on this top trim K5, just as it isn't offered on the rival Camry or Altima. And in the case of the KIA there's another factor, the existence of the base level Stinger GT-Line with the same engine and drivetrain as the K5 and available AWD at a price only slightly more than the K5 GT. More kudos for noting that the K5 lacks any form of limited slip differential in vehicle with nearly 300HP and over 300 ft lbs of torque. The wheel hop and torque steer that results can be "exciting" but it's more likely to result in a driver avoiding the use of the full power of the engine they've paid for.
    I'm a KIA fan, having owned two Sorentos over the last decade. And the K5 GT has much to recommend it. But if I were in the market I'd opt for the Stinger with the base engine and either RWD or AWD for only a slight premium over the K5.

      Better be doing it soon because Stinger is getting discontinued next year!! Not that it wasn't a good car. It's just that it wasn't selling as where the K-5 is. In 2018 Stinger damn near won car of the year.
      But for sub $50,000 price tag people go with what they know. Lexus, Audi and BMW in that range. But I'd say go for it as Stinger is an amazing car. If I had the money I would have gotten it myself. :)

    I live in the States. The K5 GT sells for around $39K and my fully loaded GT-LINE AWD (with gt1 pkg) was $34K. That's a $5K difference. Now you have to factor in auto insurance which is much higher on the more powerful K5 variant. It's not really a $600 difference (in the States) as you alluded to in your video. Btw, I thought your video was very through in the coverage of the differences regarding the GT vs GT-LINE.

    I would buy the GT. People are complaining about not having AWD but depending on where you live you have to ask yourself do I really find myself in situations where it would benefit to have AWD. Your talking about more weight, less mpg and cost more. Think about it as an everyday driver your not going to always go full throttle from a stop light or a stop sign. Your not going to always take corners aggressively and your not going to track days this car. So as a daily driver your not going to find yourself in situations that often where AWD will benefit. This car is good at highway merging has lots of features for the money a great warranty and good unique sporty looks. And if you haven't seen the GT model in person then you are missing out. My only gripe with the GT is more exterior and interior colors.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The GT doesn't have AWD for a simple reason and it's the same reason that Toyota doesn't offer it on V6 Camry and Nissan doesn't offer AWD on their turbo Altima. The "take rate" for performance versions of mainstream midsize sedans is so low that investment in AWD that would complicate production and add cost makes no sense. For example, only 5% of all Camrys sold in the US have the 300 HP V6 engine. That amounts to about 15,000 vehicles but if Toyota doesn't see a market for an AWD V6 Camry, it would be ridiculous for brands like KIA to invest in it.

    • @RunEmDownTony
      @RunEmDownTony 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephenhendricks103 right exactly. I'd buy a K5 GT in a heart beat even though it's only front wheel drive. No body is moaning over the hell cats I mean they are RWD and they have trouble putting power down. All that power and they get smoked by a less powerful car, from a dig anyway. But no one is saying oh it doesn't have AWD it's so poor it's a no go for me.

      @@RunEmDownTony That's a bit apples and oranges since the issue with FWD architecture is that the front wheels must control both steering and power delivery simultaneously and under acceleration the weight transfer to the rear aggravates the difficulty of that task. That's not nearly as problematic in RWD architecture where the tasks are split between the front and rear wheels. That doesn't mean, of course, that vehicles such as the Hellcat with 700 HP have an easy time of it.
      I've been driving FWD cars for MANY years, going back to a Saab 96 in the late 1960's. The design has a number of advantages in smaller, lighter vehicles with limited power. In such vehicles putting weight over the front wheels fitted with winter tires achieves nearly as much as AWD vehicles in inclement weather. But when HP and torque reaches or exceeds, say 300 of each, some means of dealing with the dual tasks of steering and power delivery is highly recommended for more than simply dealing with ice and snow. That's aa less problmatic issue in a RWD vehicle since the weight transfer under acceleration puts additional weight over the rear wheels.
      For vehicles with a FWD design there are several solutions. The simplest approach is simply to limit power to the front wheels under hard acceleration typically with user controlled or hard wired traction control.. But that approach in vehicles like the Mazda6 impacts performance. (Despite its advantage in engine specs the "6" is slower to 60 mph than either the 2.0L Accord or the V6 Camry owing to its less sophisticated transmission and automatic power reduction under hard acceleration.) AWD is another approach but that is expensive and difficult to justify to consumers who don't face challenging weather conditions. Finally, there is a limited slip differential (mechanical or electronic) that largely eliminates the problem. For example, my GTI with stock HP and torque (228/258) provides an electronic LSD that's one of the reasons it handles so well for an FWD vehicle.

      @@stephenhendricks103 right! I completely understand the characteristics of FWD and RWD. I know the limitations of them both as I own both. All I'm saying is your not going to try and drift the K5 GT around corners just like your not gonna be drifiting a Honda accord around corners. FWD cars can only handle so much when your asking the car to accelerate, turn and grip all while weight is being transferred to the back and side to side is a tall order on the front wheels. If your the type of person who constantly take corners hard and accelerate hard all the time from a stop or around corners then it's your fault that your looking to buy a FWD car. Don't complain about a high-powered FWD car when for your driving needs, you should be looking at RWD or AWD cars like the stinger etc.

      @@RunEmDownTony Well, I'm too old to do much drifting. :) But I do cherish navigating twisting mountain roads in the Washington Cascades in my FWD GTI. And for that mission, the VW's electronically controlled version of an LSD makes a huge difference in handling.

    Brand name speakers, like Bose, doesn't mean much anymore. There are hundreds of different types of Bose now. Which one did which car get? Who knows.
    Also, AWD feels like a marketing ploy nowadays. Most people really don't need it. It makes the car heavier. You lose more power to wheels. It's pretty much just for launching from a stop because either the car does not have boost by gear or the gearing ratio was not engineered to work correctly with all the torque so you get wheel slippage without AWD. For those who actually NEED AWD where they live, it's way better to have winter tires. AWD doesn't help with stopping the car.

    • @ACCELER8TV
      @ACCELER8TV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said!

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's certainly true that putting winter tires on a FWD equipped vehicle will provide much the same benefit as a AWD in inclement weather. But a good AWD system offers handling benefits beyond that advantage in a FWD automobile. I'm not surprised that KIA doesn't offer AWD in the K5 GT but the absence of some sort of LSD is a major weakness in a car with over 300 HP and Torque.
