After seeing the real estate advertisements for Burgundy, you should have told your viewers to beware of words like "viager" or "life occupied". That means that you pay the owner now, but you can't take possession until after whoever lives there dies. (The older the resident is, the higher the price.) Can you afford to wait an unspecified time (10-20+ years?) for the property? Probably not. Most French real estate search engines will allow you to filter out those listings, but you still need to be careful because some unscrupulous realtors don't mark properties as "viager", they only add a small note at the end of the description.
I was not aware of that. I would not buy such a property myself nor recommend to anyone. Thank you for the advice, I will remember it for future videos 💝
So what, no danger. When the purchase contract is signed at the notary, everything is read out again in detail and explained. After all, it's not a developing country...
Yes .viager.... you pay up front and post a monthly payment often 350-400€ pm to the old person who continues to live in the house unless they go into full time care or die. You... You live where you like.. except there😂
Both sides of my family, the Grandmas left Alsace in 1870 because of a war with Prussia, so I'm half French/almost half Welsh, probably all Celtic. I feel French-American and I've always wished I could work there. I wonder where a French American would be most comfortable, I speak some French but don't sound right. I think Dordogne sounds great approaching retirement.
I used to live in Cannes, and have been looking into moving to Corsica now, because it feels much the same, a bit like living at the same time in France and in Italy. I was absolutely gobsmacked at how much space there still is, and how insanely inexpensive real estate is. Yes, I am well aware that basic necessities are far more expensive than on the mainland, and that it is the poorest region in France, etc., but I think it is the perfect alternative for the French Riviera, which I personally have not been able to find anywhere in mainland France.
All I can say for people who would be interested, is that with the warming climate it doesn’t t rain so much in Normandy where I live now. For example yesterday it was pouring and colder but today it is sunny and warm. Weather seems to have change. I went there 30 years ago and it was cold and rainy during July and all day but now it seems to have come to an end...
I spent 4 weeks in Europe this summer - Italy, France, Germany and other surrounding countries and the weather was crazy. Hot since the morning and heavy storms in the afternoon. I lived in Europe until my late 20's but don't remember the weather being so unstable in summer.
Thank you for giving Occitanie a recommendation. Not many Brits know about the area. We bought a small house in Agde in 2018 and have now moved here permanently from the UK. It's a fantastic area for retirement. Housing is affordable unless you want a sea view. Great area for cycling, rambling and trekking. Sea water and beaches are amongst the cleanest in the whole of the Mediterranean. Direct trains to Paris (4hrs), Barcelona (2 hrs) and Marseille (onwards to Italy) 2hrs. And there are about 6 airports in the region.
I'm French and I know a few expatriates. Those I know know that Burgundy produces top-of-the-range wines and that a good bottle of Meursault will quickly exceed 50 euros (and not 3 euros...). Even Beaujolais (Burgundy's neighboring wine) costs more than 10 euros when it's famous. Burgundy is a depopulating region. As a result, it's easy to find housing for under 100,000 euros, except in Beaune, which has become a major tourist base. The expatriates I know are enthusiastic at first: “It's pretty, the people are nice, medical costs are very low.” But then they realize that the winters are long, the locals don't speak English well and it's complicated to get medical care because there aren't many doctors left and the nearest hospital is far away. What's more, there's a lot of red tape involved. And they understand that it will be complicated to resell their house as the region is depopulating.
@alsabreizh4 Thank you very much for your comment. It is a good idea to visit the place twice, once in summer and then in winter to see if you will like the place in all seasons. But I really wonder who buys 50 euros bottle of wine ?! 😆 😮
@@ExpatTheExplorer I'm talking about high-end wines. Indeed, a bottle of Meurseult is expensive, but, in my opinion, the taste is commensurate with the price. Montrachet is even more expensive (up to 1,000 euros), but I've never had the honor of tasting one !😉

Dordogne is quite expanded on this map. And the housing prices need to be looked at with many grains of salt. Those are prices for housing with no land, many many repairs (might as well rebuild the while thing), and probably at 30 min+ from the closest small train station...
@nicolas4601 Thank you for the comment. I think when buying property at low cost it is somehow expected they will be in remote areas and some repairs might be required.

Personally, and possibly with the exception of Normandy purely as war history buff, I wouldn't choose any of these places as far too well known for my liking.
