    What I love about Voces8 is that they don't use excessive vibrato in their voices so they have a beautiful blend as a result❤❤

    • @johnmarquardt1991

      The song has nothing to do with Shenandoah, Virginia or the Shenandoah Valley - it's a song about fur trappers on the Missouri River.

    • @xtusvincit5230
      @xtusvincit5230 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@johnmarquardt1991 in the 19th century there were multiple versions sung throughout the American riverways and then beyond. These versions were simultaneously occurring and it is impossible to tease out which was original or more authentic. It seems that you have fallen into the WP trap of thinking that whoever got to create a wikipedia page first was authoritative. Then you came here full of "knowledge" to declare what absolutely can't be certain. But, thanks for playing.

    • @xtusvincit5230
      @xtusvincit5230 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Also, it is very unlikely that a 19th century fur trapper would speak of longing to see an Indian chief, on racial lines and it's too gay sounding for the period, too. The song makes much more sense that a fur trapper from the Shenandoah valley, now far away, misses his native land.

    That a group this small can accomplish what huge choirs cannot is a testament, not only to the dedication they show to their singing, but their talent and ability to reach places in the soul that otherwise are impenetrable. Voces8. I remember this song in choir during my senior year, and I have always cherished it.

    This is one of my favourite performances ever. It is sooooo beautiful, and I’ve never heard such rich chords.
    I much prefer the slightly lower transposition and slower pace of this compared to the version on Spotify (from ‘In The Beginning’). It is a spectacular showcase for the incredible way in which voices can touch the soul in a way never quite matched by instruments.
    The harmonies when Emily first sings “away” create the most breathtaking sound. Something about how the pace drops very slightly to allow the chord to hold and wash over you is just gorgeous!
    The way vibrato is used so sparingly and effectively is also completely exquisite. The tightness of the performance allows it to feature as an enhancement, rather than just something you put in because it’s a choral piece.
    And that low note at the end is just beyond belief!
    I think I’d probably burst if I got to see this live! My parents have been fortunate enough to see Voces8 perform twice, but they’ve never done this, or my other favourite of theirs, the incomparably brilliant arrangement of Massive Attack’s Teardrop - it’s out of this world, and I’d be beside myself if I got to hear it live!
    Thank you, Voces8, for this wonderful treat!

    As much as I am staggered by the talent of these singers, and they are incredible(!) this version doesn't move me in my bones like the Liam Clancy version. No disrespect meant. This is a truly great version. Which one would make me personally stand up with my beer? Liam's version. Just goes to show that the world is wide and full of space for everyone I suppose. Good luck all you listening for the best music and not respecting crappy barriers. I am glad to have found VOCES8. Will be listening from now on. Magnificent voices. Breathtaking.

(Still in 2021 and forever no musician should forget the importance, often prominence of the bass, especially when it is moving all proper in contrary motion to the soprano. And when at a final cadence those fundamental notes are vibrating at 3-4 cycles per second.
