I’m not a veteran teacher and I quit because of student behavior. Nothing in my schooling prepared me for the disrespect and straight up abuse I endured. Yes, I had some great students who I miss and wish I could’ve given more attention to, but it was so painful to go into work every day that I couldn’t do it anymore. I lost 15 pounds and had to be in weekly counseling to cope with my job. I LOVED teaching, but my job was 70% babysitting, 20% grading, and 10% actual teaching. It was miserable.

What are your thoughts about parents who do not want their kids in public schools for the same & other reasons? The way I figure, if teachers feel the same as you about the situation in US schools then parents are totally right to feel similarly.

@@historypolitics108 I’m also a teacher, well I was. I resigned for similar reasons. I’d say 1) properly fund public schools 2) attract and retain highly qualified staff - it can be done and 3) empower admin to actually handle disruptions instead of feel they have to hide what’s really going on. If admin, parents, and kids respect the classroom leader and provide material support, the skies the limit. But take all that way and you see what results. This isn’t rocket science. We know what works, but there’s so much people-pleasing going on, parents not holding kids accountable, and grownups acting like bratty children the whole ship is sinking.

There wil be no change in discipline untill: 1) No Child Left Behind is modified so that schools are not punished for disciplining students. 2) other Federal laws
are modified so Special Education students can be disciplined. and 3) parents of rowdy, rude and out of control students must feel some pain (.mandatory meetings. fines, etc). Contact your reps, tell them to do this and vote for their opponents if they aren't willing.

It's absolutely the same here in SoCal. No discipline, even for horrible fighting at the HS level, just "behavior contracts" (what, is this middle school?) that never go anywhere. And to make matters worse, admin can go after teachers and blame them for poor classroom management even tho they have no back up or recourse when it comes to student discipline.
Students have all the rights and teachers are expected to put up with threats, disrespect, and abuse. Most parents simply back their kids or won't answer the phone of you call. Kids were even upset that the sub expected them to be quiet and working the other day.
Oh, and there's no dress code anymore because the kids are offended at such a requirement. I'm not talking uniform - just decent, regular clothing. They're totally setting these kids up for a shock when they go into the workforce - they will go from feeling entitled to feeling like victims, like there's something wrong with all these work place expectations.

Banning cell phones in class is just a start. What they really need to be doing is bringing the hammer down on these unruly students. But you can't do that because of helicopter parents. If their son / daughter so much as get's a warning for behavior the parent is in full rage mode stomping their way into the school to holler at the teacher because their son /daughter is the most behaved student in the world in their eye's.

Now, we're not talking about taking them away, just having the students leave their phones in their lockers, but all it takes is one or a handful of people to start making a fuss about that and the school board and administration back off on that "new" rule. Kids are allowed to do as they please and if you think this is bad, just wait until they are the adult generation. We will be at their mercy if they are the ones left to care for the elders. The International Baccalaureate is NOT a gifted program for "motivated" students -- it is a completely normal, BASIC college prep program for European universities, but the students think they're something special. I told them as much one day because they incessantly referred to other students in the school as "regulars." The only reason we have IB in American schools is to prop up failing schools' test scores by creating a "magnet" to draw in better test takers. That's it. The parents are insufferable and the students are entitled as fuck.

The crises facing teachers and their lack of control is twofold. A breakdown in family structure and good parenting in which children learn proper respect and boundaries. The other, is an administration that doesn’t back up the teachers’ concerns and disciplinary actions, sometimes even undermining the teacher’s authority in the classroom. Teachers are caught in the middle of this struggle. It’s no wonder so many are burned out and quitting.

She prepared in home her plans for teaching, she can't spend time with her own kids, working on lessons that students won't appreciate. I am so sad watching her driving to a place where she will be disrespected, and called the "B" word just for asking students to pay attention. The schools want my mom to be God and control what the whole government can't. My mom is a person with feelings, emotions, and family, she deserves to be happy and respected like everybody else! if a secretary in a company is called by her boss B or F or the N-word because he is rude, are you going to educate the secretary to learn relational skills to make him happy and blame her for causing that? does she have to go to level 5 to keep her job or lose it? so you will train her to accept her domination and misery??

When I taught I hardly had support from my principals, so when the kids acted out I took it upon myself to call and text parents. Luckily these kids had parents who weren't in denial about how bad their kids can behave. Most of the time the parent came and took care of it. If the child exploded at least the parent was there to witness and control their child misbehaving. I had a few parents who didn't show up because they worked, but at least the child would get consequences at home. Sadly there were some who didn't want to deal with their child so they'd avoid answering my calls or texts. Not all teachers can do what I did though because they'd get in trouble with their principals. The school board is usually a group of good ol boys and it's so annoying to teachers how out of touch most of them are. Don't get me started on the ridiculous and often ineffective programs they approve for us to teach when we're already overflowing with work. They add more to teacher's plates, and won't take anything away. Teaching isn't teaching anymore, it sucks because you're constantly and emotionally stressed and barely have anything left to give to your own family. There's a lot of crappy administrators too who just want to appease parents. There are parents who complain not knowing that their child is exaggerating or lying about things. It's too much drama and not worth the toxicity. Then some people have the nerve to minimize a teacher's negative and traumatic experience and gaslight them by asking , "What about the kids?" Well, what about them? You can only bend so much for a student who doesn't want to learn or be there. It's not my job to do everything, the kids have to do their part too, and a lot of them aren't because of lack of discipline, and/or something going on at home that I'm not responsible for. Just awful all around. It really does start at home and parents should not let their children run things because we are the adults, not them. I don't care how much they push back. Also, some parents seem to think that when the child is in school, the teacher takes on the role of parent, and that's not true. Teachers are supposed to teach, that's it, but people expect us to be our student's mother or father when that relationship should belong to the parents.

It starts at home and these lazy parents aren’t doing their job which likely goes straight back to their parents not teaching them how to behave and as they get older , how to parent their kids. Discipline in the home helps to teach them how to interact in society, and learn respect for authority. Without lessons at home, there is chaos. Don’t wait until the kids are teenagers, start teaching them right and wrong, yes and no to actions when they are little.

I was absolutely fine with cellphones being banned from classrooms. They need to be away from classrooms, I hated when a sudden noise would come on whenever I was trying to do work. I still hate it today.
And yes, veteran teachers, and just teachers in general, are sooo under-appreciated. At my schools, if you dared to act up and act crazy, you got suspensions and detentions! Any acts of resentment and/or rebellion were to be done AWAY from the classrooms. AWAY.
And even then I could not participate in such behavior, I just wanted to get into college and get a job and advance in my career. That’s all. Instead, I also had to worry about crap like this. Luckily, we had very few incidents that escalated dramatically, if at all, like this in my schools. But still I felt a lot of stress because of hearing stories about rowdy students in general.
Rowdy students don’t just put stress on teachers, they put stress on the families of teachers and staff, and educational systems in general (which are already broken themselves in many other ways on so many levels). They create a system-wide type of chaos and stress, especially on those who already set high expectations and want people in the system to succeed!
PARENTS, PLEASE GET YOUR CHILDREN’S CRAP TOGETHER BEFORE THEY ENTER HIGH SCHOOL. BEFORE MIDDLE SCHOOL, EVEN!

If it's that way in Florida, imagine how it is here in Fresno, California. Out of control students come from out of control parents. Admin is afraid of the parents and doesn't give a hoot and support the teachers. The children aren't stupid. In fact, they think it's funny to watch their parent make a fool of themselves as they chew out their teacher in front of the class. Who gets admonished by admin? The teacher of course. Follow the money. Schools with abhorrent scores get more money thrown at them. The ex-Mrs. Bezos gave $22 million to Fresno Unified a couple months ago. The better performing schools receive less money from the state. There are no consequences to lying, cheating, and stealing. When my dad was a principal, he would call up the parent and tell them what their child did and ask them how many swats. Parents in those days expected their children to behave and not embarrass them.

Sure the parenting, but the education system is fucked the way it is. With a changing society you need to change the way you teach the newborn of that society. Look at how education is evolving abroad, how well they're doing there. Why can't we make progress here?

This is a lawless society. American culture is based on bullying and taking advantage of other people. It's not surprising that American children behave the way they do. They are modeling what's around them.

I won't go back to teaching until they completely get rid of cell phones in the classroom instead of just saying they are doing it. Every student is on their phone all class period and they are watching videos, looking at inappropriate things, playing games, making tik toks, etc. It's every kid. And it's not because they don't have assignnments to do. They have plenty to do and have engaging lessons but they can't tear themselves away from the phones. Any parents reading this, don't allow your child to take a phone to school! Even an older phone that doesn't have service can be used on someone's Hotspot to access the internet. Also the kids put their earbuds lin and don't hear any of the lessons. It's a huge problem and parents need to make tge smart choice for their kids who are addicted to ther phones. Parents don't realize they are cheating their kids out of a good education by giving them phones. Who do you want teaching your kids? The teacher or the phone???

why arent parents being called to come get thier kid? its not the schools job to discipline your kid its your job as a parent to do that. Teachers teach parents parent. good gravy its not hard just whip that ass a few times and the kid will know not to behave like that in school if your to weak to do that then take thier stuff not phones, computers or social media that will get their attention. Stop treating kids like adults start treating them like kids.

The parents may refuse to come to the school because they can't get off work. Parents may drop their child off even if he or she is suspended because they can't get off work. We don't have a culture that is conducive to raising children due to financial pressures.

  • @WaryJester
    @WaryJester ปีที่แล้ว +6

Its not about the kids. These kids have acted the same for generations. The issue is dealing with these kids WITH NO RESOURCES. Teachers don't get paid enough to work with perfectly well-behaved kids, let alone 30+ average-behaved kids with a few absolutely intolerable kids thrown in. Teachers don't get supply from the schools, it's out of pocket or donated. Then you have useful outlets for said bad-behavior like art, sports, counseling, after school clubs, ect... that are being cut out completely, which sends the students further into their only other outlet, *acting out*. And you have two polar opposite type of parents: the ones who say you have no rights to "parent" the students (ignoring the fact that as a child care provider you must care and provide for your students) and the ones who think that theyre a glorified babysitters and are legally obligated to take responsibility for the students actions as if they were the parent. Until schools get the funding they need to operate with the students and teachers well being in mind, its probably better off to quit or drop out.

Yes all generations act out, the difference is we had consequences back in the day, now they don’t. Btw I work in schools, I see it all the time; it’s getting worse because one: internet: two no repercussions of actions and people don’t parent anymore. Kids don’t get scared when u say “I’ll call parents or go to principal office” cuz they know they not going to do anything

I don't blame these teachers leaving! It's the same in the UK - no discipline from parents so the children are ferrel! I don't know about the US but in the UK schools are inspected and the government inspectors go in looking for faults (a teacher was told that by one of the inspectors)! A head teacher committed suicide a while back because the school inspectors were downgrading her school!

Every responsibility is on the teachers, none are on the students. We are responsible for their behavior, their grades, their work ethic, their effort, their ability, their phone usage, their engagement, and they come to us unable to read even basic text. What were you expecting to happen? Administrators find every way to make the teacher the one at fault for literally everything. NCLB started this garbage and race to the bottom made it so much worse. Let me ask you. If you knew you could do no wrong, that every single thing you did or did not do would be placed at the feet of someone else, would you be on your best behavior? Seriously, our industry has become a joke. AND, let's talk about curriculum. Practicing tests is not learning, ok. It's not. Districts, maybe not all, but a lot, start practicing tests very early. Mine, around third grade. This is when kids are developing their tastes for reading. What they like, what genres, styles, stories, types of characters and so much more. Instead of fostering these mechanisms and creating people who genuinely enjoy reading we are practicing tests, with materials that mirror the garbage reading on the tests. Short articles about nothing, excerpts from books kids have not and will never read, non-fiction junk that makes textbooks look like fun. We are teaching them that, 1. They will never score well so they must not be good at it. 2. All reading sucks. Then we wonder why they can't read, why they are so addicted to their screens. Duh! The system is beyond repair and sinking fast. So what do they do about it? In my state the state agency blamed the teachers saying we didn't do our jobs during Covid and then used that as an excuse to take complete control of the curriculum, and literally every process in the class to double down on stupid.

I could turn this school around in months if I had complete control. The first change would be to understand that education is no longer a right but a privilege.
