    Hi Adam, thanks for this and all of your videos, which I really enjoy, but most importantly for myself find very useful/educational.
    I am a very keen, but must admit very amateur when compared to your good self, Koi keeper. I moved about 2 and half years ago to my new home and had to move 43 koi and 3 sturgeon from my large natural pond to a purpose built new 25k litre pond. For the first two years the fish were kept in raised temporary wooden ponds but have been in the new pond since mid July, after giving the filter system 6 weeks to establish in the new pond. I very quickly had an outbreak of Costia, Trichodena and Flukes. Which I believe I have treated successfully, although lost 2 koi, using potassium permanganate and chloramine T. Nearly killed the sturgeon in the process but fortunately gave them as long as I dared with the treatment before moving them and they made it, just. Obviously I have been taking daily readings and all was good in terms of water quality until a few days ago, when the nitrite and nitrate parameters have spiked although ammonia is showing as zero as it always has, which confused me as I could understand if I had an ammonia spike. The water automatically flushes and tops up around 1% per day. Although I gave the main filter unit Aqua Pure Start when it first came operational, I have now added 40k litres worth Evolution Aqua Pure Pond balls since in an attempt to tackle the nitrite. This outside pond is pretty lightly stocked for its size and water temp has not been below 12 degrees to date. Anyway long story short any advice on the following two questions would be greatly appreciated:
    1. Anything else I can do on the nitrite front other than more aggressive water changes?
    2. I am considering permanently heating the pond, would you advise this and advise 18 degrees?
    Many thanks
    James

    a loss of 20 big koi is heart wrenching... that really sucks. i really admire the amount of money you put into your passion.

    hi could I ask you something ? I have costia at the moment, lot of deaths but its just in the gills of some of my koi and not all.
    about the parasite video you posted with a fluke in the background and 100 times magnification.
    I am a beginner with koi. I bought my first one 2 years ago but are you sure that is costia on your video? to me it looks like chilodonella especially at 100 mag .
    I need my mag at x400 to see costia which look diff to your video and a fluke would be much bigger at x400.
    what do you think ?
    love your videos by the way, very helpful. thankyou

    Diseases is a tricky bastard. Really the only way to attempt to stop it is to heavily quarantine heavily medicated. Heavily separate. And finally scrape often. There should be a small implant with a Bluetooth chip in it say the size of a pacemaker I would love you to track when you scrape it and you would scrape every fish every week if you want to.

    • @impokejon2908
      @impokejon2908 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to be overcautious you can seal the air and water system from the outside and the tap. On top of that you could have an air quarantine Gateway. Inside of a small entrance he would Pelt you with air while you're naked. This removes all the microbes off your skin. Of course that's complete Overkill unless you're trying to stop any of your koi from dying from disease ever again. But if you were trying to go this far you'd probably end up doubling the cost of your system. It would be cheaper just to buy koi full grown or grow them out to replace their koi.

      Hi, No i don't think it will work as well for those as it does costia it might knock them back but probably wont kill them off

  • @thedirtyfecker

    The most important thing you must do with costia before you even begin is to do a complete clean out of your filters. Costia will remain in the muck and chemical treatments and even salt will not get them all. They will bounce back after the treatment is finished. Also, when using heat you must make sure to increase the temperature over an extended period of time. Maybe 1 deg every two days. Anything else is very risky to your fish when raising the temp to this level. High oxygenation in water that hot is really important too for big fish as that is more likely to stress and kill your fish than the costia. When you heat the water, the temp in your pond and the temp in the filters will often differ. Even one deg. can be enough to make sure you don't get all the costia. Those hiding in the muck may still escape the heat treatment. I have always found two doses of potassium permanganate to be the best cure. Space the treatments 8 days apart to allow the fish to recover. Don't break this rule. Also, you have to ramp down the heat just the same as the way you ramped it up! You can't just turn off the heat like that.

    After my girlfriend has seen your videos she has stopped giving me stick about the money i'm spending on my new pond build... Result.
    Could you do a video on how you take a scrape from your koi? I'm struggling with it and could use some tips.

      Hi Julyan,
      I thought first line of treatment for Costia is FMG and Salt, and not PP. Please advise as I am new to the hobby.

    bummer bummer -when you did your filter cleaning a video back-could that have anything to do with that? I never heard of costia-I'm glad I know now. Do you think outdoor ponds have the same issues as indoor ponds? Man Adam, Sorry to hear this. Take Care & God Bless

    • @SuperGarbonzo
      @SuperGarbonzo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      P.S. I use to salt my ponds and have not all year--I'm thinking I will-do you think salting helps rid parasites from the fish?

    • @SuperGarbonzo
      @SuperGarbonzo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      also I'm glad the sturgeon is ok

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No i removed the bead so i could install the heater to do the heat treatment the water was also green when i did that if you look close.
      It dipends on how much salf you mean i add a slight amount to keep a trace ammount of salt so that water is not 100% fresh but if you taste it you would not detect salt. Constant salt is a bad thing because it makes the parasites and bacteria immune to more salt so if you needed to treat with salt or use salt for something it would reduce the chance of it working if you already have salt in your pond. also there is usually a better way than salt for most parasites that are effected by salt.
      Adam

      ok- spot on-I won't use salt then-glad to hear from you,my best to you and yours

    Today I woke up and my boyfriend told me my Calico Koi was acting off, my koi Frankie has been floating on his side and spitting up/when i was trying to see if he had a bladder infection. In the process of checking him it took me a minute to realize this grey, slimy, almost hairy looking substance. Well it's been rather cold here and my other fish are fine, but I secluded him and he looks like he is better.. I check on him and help hold him up right for oxygen, but my poor boy is just miserable.. Should I euthanize him?.. Or should I let him rest in warmer water (the water felt frozen to me.. But my other smaller koi are thriving..) he has only lived in our pond for 3 months, he also was perfect fine when my husband left for work.. 2 hours later he is dying... Any tips? I am positive Im gonna lose him.. But i want to give one last fight, he did a lot better in the warm water.. but I'm scared for him..

    How many days do you have to keep the water at 30 degC and does it kill flukes at that Tep.

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kept it at 30DegC for 7 days it does not take long at that temp but i wanted to make sure it got everything. That temp does not kill fluke but it does slow them down it can also make chemicles more effective but you have to be carefull with oxygen levels.

      It will kill them pretty much streight away they dont even like the hot microscope light but i kept it at 30 for 4 days to make sure the whole pond had a even temp and let the fish settle from temp fluctuations for a while.

      @@angrybrit7331 hi.
      i lost 30 koi this year. been to vets for antibiotic injections everything. my son in law has had half a dozen koi for 20 year doesnt know what a parasite is. if your fish are settled, not overcrowded water settled, and nothing new added chances are they will be fine for ever.
