After watching many videos of people taking these little bikes on and off road and seeing their toughness and versatility, i'm literally falling in love with the Grom. Great video by the way!
The reason youre probably experiencing the "lag" at lower end is one because that cam you put in one is made for mid to top end pull which is why that ecm is raised to 10k rpm's (so you can benefit from 6-10k in the rev range) which is basically replacing the low end power for top end in a similar way that gearing does (and some bottom end could be gained back with a gearing change) and two because that decomp was giving rotating mass and a heavier rotating mass helps with bottom end (and could be gained back through the use of a heavier flywheel or clutch basket). As someone who has always wanted a grom but cant because i live in a small town that id have to ride highways (atleast 30 minutes) to get anywhere so i thought that a grom was just a dream and id keep riding big bikes, but this has changed my mind. I also didnt want to bore or stroke a grom because i dont have a case puller to pull a bottom end and i didnt want to lose reliability with a big bore. This seems like a viable option that doesnt kill the bank
I agree with you completely. It makes sense that I'm really feeling the bog, because I removed my oil spinner as well, which contributes a significant amount of rotating mass. It really does pull on the top end now though. Just depends on how you want to set your grom up. I appreciate your informative response!
Turns out David from DHM lives a few minutes from me. After watching your vid I ordered the cam and ECU. Then we met up and he flashed my ecu while on the bike and handed me the cam. Installing today and stoked! Thanks for the vid.

CT Gromer holy-e crap. Just let it warm up and went for a rip. This is by far the best 153 dollars you can spend on a grom. I’m about 180 lbs and 7-rev limiter is now a blast. Already let David know I was really happy.

Oh hell yeah! Nice video once again. This is what I'll be doing to my Grom for sure. I thought it sounded great once i moded my air box but this is outrageous! I love my Grom more than any previous bike I've owned. So good around town and a shit ton of fun to work on. Every time I ride it I feel like I'm getting away with something. :) It's got over 15000 kms (9300 miles) on it so it needs some love and this is just the thing. Thanks mate!.

My bad guys I forgot to respond on here, but yes it is noticeablyfaster I have topped out at 77 miles an hour I am 6'2 215lbs, it pulls way harder 1st through 3rd above 7000 RPMs it just opens up

That's awesome. I'm planning to buy a grom this weekend and I'm looking for the best way to get 70+mph out of the bike. Thanks so much for subbing and commenting! good luck picking up a grom! You wont regret it. Keeping gearing stock, intake, quality exhaust and Reflash ECU (look into DH Motoring) will get you to 70mph. Adding the CAM will help even more!
When you feel the lag at low rpm, that's a bargain with high duration/high lift aftermarket cam, you can cope it a little bit by raising your compression ratio I have a wave110, with high lift & duration cam, it did a little bog at the low end, but at mid & high, it pulls like crazy Camshaft literally shaping the character of your engine
I feel the same way, it more than makes up for the low-end bog with its crazy mid-high range power now! Not to mention the amazing sound now! Thanks for commenting!
@@rmdhndwi To be honest I don't. I trust that DH Motoring knows what he's doing. So far, everything is going great. The package he sent me contains an ECU that has been flashed to compensate for the CAM he sent.
You stated the reason why I don't get a cam. I'm not willing to give up low rpm torque in exchange for high rpm horsepower. For performance guys who want to race around all the time it's the perfect solution. But not so practical for regular daily transportation guys who always ride between 3,500 and 6,000 rpm. For most riders it's a great product and the price is right. : )
That's true you do lose some. But when I'm riding the grom in town I find myself at pegged throttle a lot of the time, so it definitely helps get you up to speed when you need it!
@@CTGromer My riding style is completely different. I rarely peg the throttle and the engine is almost always between 3,500 and 6,000 rpm. With such a small bike and a tiny engine, weight becomes a major performance factor. I weigh 138 and my Grom is lightened down to 214 pounds. I just ordered a lightweight all aluminum rear swing arm to make it even lighter. Cams are just fine if you need to spool up the engine. That's what they're designed to do.

Just installed a 57mm bore kit (148cc) for $25, added a 28mm exhaust system ($25) and have a performance cam ($25) and bigger injector ($15) on order. After everything is installed and running smoothly, I'll get an ECU remap done in a parking lot at a local shopping mall by a freelance Honda technician for about $17 bucks. Yes, things are inexpensive where I live...and I own the MSX, not a "Grom". I hope I'll be done with my major MSX projects.
You guys are missing the point of the PCV. It affords you the ability to make changes to the bike, and only pay for the ecu once. If you are content with just the stuff you've done, then by all means, reflash your ecu. But it's like a drug, once you start, you're hooked. The power commander (at least on my last two liter bikes) also had expandability for a/f and other stuff.
You're right, and I try to make that point clear in some of my other videos. If you are going to CONTINUE to mod your bike, BBK, etc. then the PCV has the expand-ability and the customization potential to make it the better choice. For most people on here that are just doing bolt ons and staying stock bore, the ECU flash is the cheapest and safest option. Thanks for the comment!
I like it here in Thailand no one pump with Multi Grades of Fuel! I run 91 as it is........🤪 Ive got a 2021 (2022 USA) Grom w/ TST coverplate Sprint Air Filter, Zoom Brute Exhaust and DHM S1 v2 cam ive got the High Compression Piston Kit but I'm kind of on the fence about installing it as Ive seen/heard mixed reviews about the durability of it.....
Hey, no I didn't. Seems the same in that regard, a couple others have commented that its some sort of decompression mechanism to aid in starting, however, it starts just the same as it did before with the new performance CAM. Thanks for commenting!
Comparing the power commander to a package that includes a cam is kind of unfair. A power commander is only as good as the tune that gets put on it. It's really designed to allow for unlimited tuning (like on a dyno) and is very often underutilized. Not saying the flash and cam isn't sweet it's just comparing apples to oranges.
While I agree with you in terms of performance they're not comparable and that the PCV is typically under utilized and people are just using the maps provided on the PCV websites and not using a wideband sensor or dyno, I disagree on their total comparability. I'm comparing what you get for dollar spent and the PCV just by itself is $350, then you have to buy the wideband sensor, or at least dyno it (more money). With the DHM CAM and Reflash package ($150) you get sooo much more performance for your money spent. That's my point. Thanks for commenting brother, cheers!
@@CTGromer If you wanted to make a comparison for the PCV and mods from DHM, you should have just swapped out the reflashed ecu without the cam, or paired the Tbolt cam with the PCV and test against the DHM / cam combo.
@@robertmrozek3067 The problem is I'd have to pay more to get the PCV tuned for the TB CAM, and I didn't want to do that. Again, my comparison is on price of the two packages vs power gained.
It all sound good but I have a Stock Grom with a Zoom S exhaust Chimera throttle tube. Im 5'8 192 lbs and have hit 68 mph. So for the money I would just keep the From for my stunts. Ill ave the "speed stuff" for my big bikes. Im just saying the Grom is a great little bike. But its a 125 at the end of the day. You can spend a lot of money on some hoopla that might get you a "little faster" But its not like gonna add another 10, 15 or even 20mph faster. So I would say save your money and enjoy the little bike for what it is Just my opinion. Enjoy your Grom

Just FYI you didn't mark on the cam chain where TDC was, you also didn't put the TB adjusters on your rocker arms as the stock ones are not long enough.
You forgot to (mention) to tension timing chain. Oops. Anyway nice video to look at and learn about my recently acquired MSX125sf. Anyway I will probably never notice the difference between stock and a similar upgrade. As I will probably have all parts on my doorstep before passing the break in period.....

Anyway I have a CAM on the way. But will not make this mistake. And ty a zip tie to the chain before removing the sprocket. I also ordered a Bluetooth programmable ECU from Japan. Showing me all data on the fly, and includes map changes, bike locking and map modifying on the fly. Apart from real time data. And all on my mobile. With some luck I could pass emissions tests in the future just installing original exhaust, a flow restrictor (just a small temporary small disk in air intake) and a toggle in the app. Just have a look at the APIECM app in PlayStore. Couldn't find any information as it is probably not available in our alphabet. Like to hear your reaction after checking app. For now it is mainly studying on how to fine tune a good mapping. What would your best suggestion be where to start? I do have a broad technical background but am a newbie on fine tuning ECU maps.
Because the upgraded injector will still only provide as much fuel as the ECU tells it to. Plus the ignition timing needs to be changed slightly as well to deal with the upgraded CAM--reflash is a must on this.

@@CTGromer I got everything installed. I didn't notice any loss low end but definitely a flat spot in the mid range. Hi range has great punch now. I still have plenty of power for city cruising but I think this cam is going to really help for long runs at 55-60.
I agree, but its SOOO much more money than just reflashing the ECU for the mods you have. That being said, if you have the money, nothing beats the wide ban sensor. My channel tends to speak more to budget, than top of the line though. Thanks for commenting!

I'm not sure, I can only speak to the groms, but you can check each of the manufactures and see what specific models they make these parts for. If you're asking will all these exact grom aftermarket parts bolt right up to any 125cc bike? No, they won't. They're not universal parts.
DH Motoring did not say if there was or wasn't, but I just rode it like normal, which is pretty much wide open everywhere. Everything has been good 3,000 miles later! Good question, thanks for commenting.

Hey, thanks for watching and commenting! The bike runs perfect with the CAM and ECU reflash still almost 2,500 miles later. The reliability is there man, just keep fresh oil in it and check your valves here and there, yes, DHMotoring sets the ECU to rev to 10,500 rpm, when you bang limiter it sounds amazing! Yes, I do have the Kitaco Clutch cover installed, I love it. Makes the engine rev to limiter faster for sure due to less rotating mass. It also makes you feel better to know that your oil is going through an actual oil filter too.
So no other mods needed!? I have after market big gun exaust airbox mod (just cut the metal mesh out and took out the rubber tube outside the airbox) and reflashed my ecu and hit 69mph took me awhile fully tucked but i did it, so i feel like this will top it off right here!
When he fits the new cam the cam tap it's super lose. Meaning there is a bigger gap between the tap it and cam lub. Now I would say the valves are not opening and closing for so long now. Meaning your not getting so much petrol or exhaust gas in or out. I just if it would have be a whole lot better if he had just fitted the new reflashed ecu. Please do leave any comments on this. Just wondering what you guys think 🤔
That's an interesting way to look at it, thought I'm not sure if its right or not. I think its more about optimized timing when the engine is spinning really fast. I can tell you theres a guy in our group with the exact same mod set as me except I have the CAM and he doesn't and my grom is significantly faster. Definitely a re-flash is needed, the cheapest one by far is DHmotoring, hit him up and he'll send you one. This insures you're not running to lean with the addition of intake and exhaust. So glad you're finding value, thanks for watching!

that thing on the camshaft is called compression release, it ease all the compression inside the engine without hurting the cam chain etc. and also you put the cam in the opposite direction, how???the camshaft must be in TDC for the flywheel to be aligned and not at intake stroke
Good to know, thanks. I don't believe I put the CAM in the wrong direction, it only bolts up one way, I was at TDC on compression when I inserted the CAM.
@@CTGromer the piston is at top but the cam lobe is on intake stroke, if you remember when you tore the camshaft assembly, the cam gear dot is at the top most of the head and the flywheel is on T, the only difference is the valve clearance will be off

Did you notice any changes to the MPG? Just wondering if going this route will make a significant decrease in MPG. As much as I want a bit more performance, I love the MPG, as I use mine as my daily commuter pretty much May-October. The MPG was a big factor for me in getting a Grom.
I used one of the optional pre-made maps for the grom when I compared the two setups, the map I used was setup exactly like my grom was. My point is that for only $150 you can have a tune AND a performance CAM instead of $350 just for a tuner. Thanks for commenting!
Unfortunately I think you need a bigger engine then, or a bigger bike! Remember in stock condition she's only got 8 HP! I'd say sprocket up in the front and drop some teeth in the rear, but the grom doesnt have the power or torque pull the taller gearing effectively in fourth if you do that.
@@CTGromer thankfully I only weigh 145 lb. It already has a exhaust and I'm trying to install bazzaz tuner! Which is being a real pain in the ass. The seller said they had a power commander The next day they had given me that tuner and it's awful. Power Commander is a simple plugin and play where this is not. Anyways if I must do upgrades. I will. Until then I bought a 16 tooth front sprocket and a 31 tooth rear sprocket. And we'll go from there.
Yo CT: Just watched your video again for the 5th time. LOL Does your Grom have any bottom end for wheelys and some Off Road Action with the cam and reflash? One more question. My clutch seems to be really weak. Did you do any clutch work to yours? Waiting for my hip to heal up and I'm heading to the Burg and ride your posse!!! LOL
Thanks for keeping my views numbers up this month! These are good questions, my Grom does have just enough bottom end for wheelies and light offroading, but since removing the oil spinner and adding the performance CAM, I've really lost a significant amount of low-end torque, but what I've lost down low I've gained a lot of at 7,000RPM and up! To answer your question about clutch- YES. My clutch does slip quite a bit, especially when attempting to pop the front tire off the ground. I've actually decided i'm going to order 30% stiffer clutch springs, and a Chimera Clutch Plate. Let's ride!
FYI: In a recent speedrun after filming this video, I achieved 72MPH speedo indicated - stock gearing with CAM and ECU Reflash Combo!

Would putting a 14tooth sprocket up front help with the low end with the rest of these mods ?

When you feel the lag at low rpm, that's a bargain with high duration/high lift aftermarket cam, you can cope it a little bit by raising your compression ratio
I have a wave110, with high lift & duration cam, it did a little bog at the low end, but at mid & high, it pulls like crazy

@@rmdhndwi To be honest I don't. I trust that DH Motoring knows what he's doing. So far, everything is going great. The package he sent me contains an ECU that has been flashed to compensate for the CAM he sent.

You stated the reason why I don't get a cam. I'm not willing to give up low rpm torque in exchange for high rpm horsepower. For performance guys who want to race around all the time it's the perfect solution. But not so practical for regular daily transportation guys who always ride between 3,500 and 6,000 rpm. For most riders it's a great product and the price is right. : )
That's true you do lose some. But when I'm riding the grom in town I find myself at pegged throttle a lot of the time, so it definitely helps get you up to speed when you need it!
@@CTGromer My riding style is completely different. I rarely peg the throttle and the engine is almost always between 3,500 and 6,000 rpm. With such a small bike and a tiny engine, weight becomes a major performance factor. I weigh 138 and my Grom is lightened down to 214 pounds. I just ordered a lightweight all aluminum rear swing arm to make it even lighter. Cams are just fine if you need to spool up the engine. That's what they're designed to do.

Just installed a 57mm bore kit (148cc) for $25, added a 28mm exhaust system ($25) and have a performance cam ($25) and bigger injector ($15) on order. After everything is installed and running smoothly, I'll get an ECU remap done in a parking lot at a local shopping mall by a freelance Honda technician for about $17 bucks. Yes, things are inexpensive where I live...and I own the MSX, not a "Grom". I hope I'll be done with my major MSX projects.

You guys are missing the point of the PCV. It affords you the ability to make changes to the bike, and only pay for the ecu once. If you are content with just the stuff you've done, then by all means, reflash your ecu. But it's like a drug, once you start, you're hooked. The power commander (at least on my last two liter bikes) also had expandability for a/f and other stuff.
You're right, and I try to make that point clear in some of my other videos. If you are going to CONTINUE to mod your bike, BBK, etc. then the PCV has the expand-ability and the customization potential to make it the better choice. For most people on here that are just doing bolt ons and staying stock bore, the ECU flash is the cheapest and safest option. Thanks for the comment!

ive got the High Compression Piston Kit but I'm kind of on the fence about installing it as Ive seen/heard mixed

Hey, no I didn't. Seems the same in that regard, a couple others have commented that its some sort of decompression mechanism to aid in starting, however, it starts just the same as it did before with the new performance CAM. Thanks for commenting!
Comparing the power commander to a package that includes a cam is kind of unfair. A power commander is only as good as the tune that gets put on it. It's really designed to allow for unlimited tuning (like on a dyno) and is very often underutilized.
Not saying the flash and cam isn't sweet it's just comparing apples to oranges.
While I agree with you in terms of performance they're not comparable and that the PCV is typically under utilized and people are just using the maps provided on the PCV websites and not using a wideband sensor or dyno, I disagree on their total comparability. I'm comparing what you get for dollar spent and the PCV just by itself is $350, then you have to buy the wideband sensor, or at least dyno it (more money). With the DHM CAM and Reflash package ($150) you get sooo much more performance for your money spent. That's my point. Thanks for commenting brother, cheers!
@@CTGromer If you wanted to make a comparison for the PCV and mods from DHM, you should have just swapped out the reflashed ecu without the cam, or paired the Tbolt cam with the PCV and test against the DHM / cam combo.
@@robertmrozek3067 The problem is I'd have to pay more to get the PCV tuned for the TB CAM, and I didn't want to do that. Again, my comparison is on price of the two packages vs power gained.
It all sound good but I have a Stock Grom with a Zoom S exhaust Chimera throttle tube.
Im 5'8 192 lbs and have hit 68 mph. So for the money I would just keep the From for my stunts. Ill ave the "speed stuff" for my big bikes.
Im just saying the Grom is a great little bike. But its a 125 at the end of the day.
You can spend a lot of money on some hoopla that might get you a "little faster"
But its not like gonna add another 10, 15 or even 20mph faster. So I would say save your money and enjoy the little bike for what it is

Just FYI you didn't mark on the cam chain where TDC was, you also didn't put the TB adjusters on your rocker arms as the stock ones are not long enough.

Anyway I have a CAM on the way. But will not make this mistake. And ty a zip tie to the chain before removing the sprocket. I also ordered a Bluetooth programmable ECU from Japan. Showing me all data on the fly, and includes map changes, bike locking and map modifying on the fly. Apart from real time data. And all on my mobile. With some luck I could pass emissions tests in the future just installing original exhaust, a flow restrictor (just a small temporary small disk in air intake) and a toggle in the app. Just have a look at the APIECM app in PlayStore. Couldn't find any information as it is probably not available in our alphabet. Like to hear your reaction after checking app.
For now it is mainly studying on how to fine tune a good mapping. What would your best suggestion be where to start? I do have a broad technical background but am a newbie on fine tuning ECU maps.

Why not just install a higher flow injector and keep the oem tune?
Because the upgraded injector will still only provide as much fuel as the ECU tells it to. Plus the ignition timing needs to be changed slightly as well to deal with the upgraded CAM--reflash is a must on this.

I have the cam and reflash coming. I'm worried because I lost some low end with the Koso clutch cover and oil spinner delete.
You'll lose just a tad more with cam and reflash, but you'll more than make up for it after 7,000rpm, you'll see.
@@CTGromer I got everything installed. I didn't notice any loss low end but definitely a flat spot in the mid range. Hi range has great punch now. I still have plenty of power for city cruising but I think this cam is going to really help for long runs at 55-60.

You definitely can, and in later videos you'll see that I installed a 14T sprocket and it helped significantly!
You need a wide ban tuner with the power commander.
I agree, but its SOOO much more money than just reflashing the ECU for the mods you have. That being said, if you have the money, nothing beats the wide ban sensor. My channel tends to speak more to budget, than top of the line though. Thanks for commenting!

I'm not sure, I can only speak to the groms, but you can check each of the manufactures and see what specific models they make these parts for. If you're asking will all these exact grom aftermarket parts bolt right up to any 125cc bike? No, they won't. They're not universal parts.

Was there a cam break in/rev burn in for the new cam? Oil change after said number of miles?

Hey, thanks for watching and commenting! The bike runs perfect with the CAM and ECU reflash still almost 2,500 miles later. The reliability is there man, just keep fresh oil in it and check your valves here and there, yes, DHMotoring sets the ECU to rev to 10,500 rpm, when you bang limiter it sounds amazing! Yes, I do have the Kitaco Clutch cover installed, I love it. Makes the engine rev to limiter faster for sure due to less rotating mass. It also makes you feel better to know that your oil is going through an actual oil filter too.
So no other mods needed!? I have after market big gun exaust airbox mod (just cut the metal mesh out and took out the rubber tube outside the airbox) and reflashed my ecu and hit 69mph took me awhile fully tucked but i did it, so i feel like this will top it off right here!
When he fits the new cam the cam tap it's super lose. Meaning there is a bigger gap between the tap it and cam lub. Now I would say the valves are not opening and closing for so long now. Meaning your not getting so much petrol or exhaust gas in or out. I just if it would have be a whole lot better if he had just fitted the new reflashed ecu. Please do leave any comments on this. Just wondering what you guys think 🤔
That's an interesting way to look at it, thought I'm not sure if its right or not. I think its more about optimized timing when the engine is spinning really fast. I can tell you theres a guy in our group with the exact same mod set as me except I have the CAM and he doesn't and my grom is significantly faster. Definitely a re-flash is needed, the cheapest one by far is DHmotoring, hit him up and he'll send you one. This insures you're not running to lean with the addition of intake and exhaust. So glad you're finding value, thanks for watching!

that thing on the camshaft is called compression release, it ease all the compression inside the engine without hurting the cam chain etc. and also you put the cam in the opposite direction, how???the camshaft must be in TDC for the flywheel to be aligned and not at intake stroke
Good to know, thanks. I don't believe I put the CAM in the wrong direction, it only bolts up one way, I was at TDC on compression when I inserted the CAM.
@@CTGromer the piston is at top but the cam lobe is on intake stroke, if you remember when you tore the camshaft assembly, the cam gear dot is at the top most of the head and the flywheel is on T, the only difference is the valve clearance will be off
its just so happens that my MC is the same as yours, its only carbureted not Fuel injected

Did you notice any changes to the MPG? Just wondering if going this route will make a significant decrease in MPG. As much as I want a bit more performance, I love the MPG, as I use mine as my daily commuter pretty much May-October. The MPG was a big factor for me in getting a Grom.
I'm pinned a lot of the time, and I seem to get just 100MPG on the button. So, not a significant amount of decrease in mileage.

I used one of the optional pre-made maps for the grom when I compared the two setups, the map I used was setup exactly like my grom was. My point is that for only $150 you can have a tune AND a performance CAM instead of $350 just for a tuner. Thanks for commenting!

All I really want is just the RPMs to be down to six grand or so at Highway cruising speed of 65 mph.
Unfortunately I think you need a bigger engine then, or a bigger bike! Remember in stock condition she's only got 8 HP! I'd say sprocket up in the front and drop some teeth in the rear, but the grom doesnt have the power or torque pull the taller gearing effectively in fourth if you do that.
@@CTGromer thankfully I only weigh 145 lb. It already has a exhaust and I'm trying to install bazzaz tuner! Which is being a real pain in the ass. The seller said they had a power commander The next day they had given me that tuner and it's awful. Power Commander is a simple plugin and play where this is not. Anyways if I must do upgrades. I will. Until then I bought a 16 tooth front sprocket and a 31 tooth rear sprocket. And we'll go from there.

Thanks for keeping my views numbers up this month! These are good questions, my Grom does have just enough bottom end for wheelies and light offroading, but since removing the oil spinner and adding the performance CAM, I've really lost a significant amount of low-end torque, but what I've lost down low I've gained a lot of at 7,000RPM and up! To answer your question about clutch- YES. My clutch does slip quite a bit, especially when attempting to pop the front tire off the ground. I've actually decided i'm going to order 30% stiffer clutch springs, and a Chimera Clutch Plate. Let's ride!

Its good to consider. If you're a stunter the CAM won't help you, in fact it removes some power down low. For your needs I might just do the flash.
