This is one of the most informative videos I have ever seen on the subject of turning a profit on a homestead. I know so many folks who thought they were going to make money selling eggs and found out quickly that you need A LOT of chickens to turn a profit. A very small profit. The same is true with tomatoes. Once they find out how labor-intensive growing tomatoes is they just throw in the towel. This video will be such a great help to so many folks, as it is full of common-sense ways to look at starting a homestead business. When you talk about how you had to learn by trying, and then trying something else, I thought "Thank you Jill, and Nate, for your honesty". You are teaching so much more than just what works, and what doesn't. You are teaching the importance of resilience, and persistence. Well done.
@@SmartieMan465 Their TH-cam channel generates about $15,000 a year (per Social Blades estimates), they have a store which generates a decent income, they have paid classes you can take, which generate multiple thousands in revenue, and Jill has a book which will generate income. So yes, they generate most of their income from TH-cam and directing viewers to their store and classes, that is true. However, with that aside, if you have a small farm you have to have multiple income streams. A small farm is not profitable if you only have one "iron on the fire". In all honestly, and transparency, without TH-cam, and their store, and their classes would they be in the same position financially? No. But their job on TH-cam is to create content for money. They did that with this video. I have a small homestead, and I can tell you I have tried many things here on my farm to make enough money to quit my day job (selling eggs, selling plant starts, selling vegetables at a local farmer's market). I have found it hard to replace what I am able to earn elsewhere. I am in no way giving up, but it is hard. Moral of the story? I still farm, and I still work a full-time job. As for this video, the valuable thing I took away was the importance of persistence, and resilience. That will help you in anything you try in life. Farming, selling goods, or even trying to start a TH-cam channel. That was what I was reinforcing with my comment. Would this video have been better if, like the channel You Can't Eat The Grass and the videos they have done on the subject, they were more transparent about all income streams? Yes.

I just bought 5 acres of raw land in Australia, started a youtube channel to document the properties growth, this video is sooooo valuable to me, thank you so much, so much food for thought! I love having options
It’s all about where you are located!!! I live in rural West Virginia and have lived here my entire life. The people here just won’t buy anything. Everyone claims poor mouth constantly. I’ve tried selling so many things over the years from plants to handcrafted items with little success. Your success depends on having a customer based that is open to buying a) from the producer b) buy unique items not found in the big box. My customer base is a big box, dollar store base and they have no use for higher quality items.
I would agree with this honestly & I gave up-but I also know times & people are changing & we seriously need to rethink how we were doing things- We have the skills & experience that will be worth trying this again💙
We lived near Charleston for several years. Finding that produce or farm fresh thing that folks will purchase is an extra challenge for you. It would be energizing to work together in a C.S.A. type of coop. I am talking to myself as well. I hope you find that niche that works for you.
Where we live is very similar. Too far from a city to market to people who would be interested in quality organic food, and we do not feel comfortable putting our entire lives online to market our products. Instead of trying to make money off what we make and grow, we SAVE money off what we make and grow. How we make money comes down to our skills. What skill set can we learn or already have that is marketable that we can make income from outside of the 9-5 slave labor of the world.
Have you considered producing products that can be shipped? Contacted restaurants, maybe even ones a little farther away that will bill buy? Where there is a will, there’s a way!

I like your concept of “ filling the void”… so often with small Farmers Market , everyone 😊is growing the same things. I raised organic herbs for a number of years and did well..filling the niche. Now we are on a small homestead and the whole concept has changed , lol. I’m 72, and starting to feel it haha. I stepped back into market about a year ago and have found that farm workshops are now my best source of income. It’s a constant learning curve and the ability to learn and stay flexible is a real asset. You guys are truly doing a great job! Thank you so much for sharing😊
Scraping my jaw off the ground over the Ahi pepper value!!! I grew them this past year & it was one of my best pepper crops. Then, my husband made the MOST INSANELY DELICIOUS hot sauce... And it's distinctly different than any other. Wow, do I appreciate you! 💖Thank you for this most inspiring video...... It was just what I needed today!

Just caught this video. Elder care boxes (lower weekly $$ for small amount). I started with 10 from extras planted in my garden. Save those $$ to scale up or buy tools & supplies.😊
Great video. We tried chicken on selling eggs of certain types. We realized this just wasn't worth it in our area. We just grow for ourself. My one son has a friend that grows micro's for his local restaurants and is doing great there. He lives in a different state in an area with lots of restaurants so the demand is there.
I’m looking forward to your book arriving so I can dive a bit more into making a bit of a profit from home. I took an herb course this year, dove into making tea/tinctures, and gave over 200 plants away for free. 2023 is the year I make some $ to help fund a few projects.

I haven't watched you in a while, and I agree with many comments, how much you have grown. I have noticed that the videos I enjoy the most no matter what the topic, are people who speak quickly, confidently and succinctly. You have attained that. I am a senior with a hobby garden. The lettuces and greens are the produce I most enjoy because they are so fresh. The shelf life in the store is what makes them so valuable. Also rasberries for me. No effort at all. Except keeping the plants in check. Keep up the good work

For animals,we do specialty chicks,selling eggs no,hatching those eggs into specialty breed chicks that sell for $35 per day old chick, yes. We also raise off season goat kids in our insulated horse barn. We need the goats to have kids to get milk and the kids are the result. We can have Dec. born kids with an insulated barn and they are ready to sell in June for the milk fed goat market. We keep a few extra goats just for this purpose and take just a bit of milk from each and get more than we need and still feed the kids .

Thank you so much for making this video! I'm in zone 4b (northern wisco) and only 12p days in my grow season so I'm trying to figure out how to grow things in my basement. Looking into mushrooms because there are soo many uses and there is little variety in my area. My farmers market can barely keep Asparagus and mushrooms on the tables so why not try it out! Plus, no expense on grow lights for the mushrooms which is huge for us! I cannot thank you enough for making this video! I've been racking my brain trying to figure out a way to make money and finally get out of my job where I am a number and not a person. Love you guys and OTIS is doing fantastic! turns out we like sourdough more than normal bread!

Can you talk more about how to find people to buy your crops? Did you advertise somehow and they came to you? Do you have a booth at a farmers market? Do you sell the sunflowers individually, in bundles, or as a big lot? Thank you! 😊
Great questions. First of all, I took lots of good pictures of the farm and everything we had available to be able to show potential customers. Second I dropped off samples to local restaurants that we had our eye on. Third I called, emailed, and opened lots of doors. There were lots that told me no but I didn't get discouraged. You have to find those local restaurants that want to separate themselves from the big chain restaurants. I talk about this in my book. thewhisperingwillowfarm.com/cart
Good question! It took lots of knocking on doors and free produce/flowers. We also called lots of places in our area. We heard lots of no thank you's but with persistence we found some.

Finding buyers for sunflowers will be easier. You can go find local florists for the sunflowers. The ginger fell into our laps because we have friends who make homemade elderberry syrup that uses ginger and they weren’t able to grow enough
I feel like this video was quite helpful. You've got my wheels turning... My question is, how do I figure out WHO to contact to try and get a contract for growing a specific crop?

16 years ago I didn't make a profit on my hobby farm. My husband bribed me with the cost of hay in my pocket vs sheep in the barn. I kept the sheep. 😄

I d be curious how much that you make is dependable profit? Or, does it all go back into your business? Plus some things are seasonal so don't provide regular year round monthly income. Great questions. First of all, I took lots of good pictures of the farm and everything we had available to be able to show potential customers. Second I dropped off samples to local restaurants that we had our eye on. Third I called, emailed, and opened lots of doors. There were lots that told me no but I didn't get discouraged. You have to find those local restaurants that want to separate themselves from the big chain restaurants. I talk about this in my book. thewhisperingwillowfarm.com/cart

Amazing video!!! Question: how did you find your market of people to buy your ginger and sunflowers etc? How did you meet them, identify them etc.
Good question! It took lots of knocking on doors and free produce/flowers. We also called lots of places in our area. We heard lots of no thank you's but with persistence we found some.

Finding buyers for sunflowers will be easier. You can go find local florists for the sunflowers. The ginger fell into our laps because we have friends who make homemade elderberry syrup that uses ginger and they weren’t able to grow enough
