    This guy gets better and better. Saw him opening for JD McPherson over here in Germany some years ago, just as good as JD himself. Incredible musician who really sticks out. Lyrics below, use these chords when playing along:
    Capo on 1
    Intro Am E E/G Am
    Verses Am G Am / Am G E / Am G F E / Am G E E/G Am
    [Intro]
    Am E E/G Am
    [Verse 1]
    I was standin' beside the road in Blackjack County
    Not knowing the sheriff paid a bounty
    For men like me who didn't have a penny to their names
    So he locked my leg to thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain
    [Verse 2]
    And all we had to eat was bread and water
    And each day we had to build that road a mile and a quarter
    A black snake whip would cut our backs if some poor fool complained
    And you couldn't fight back wearin' thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain
    [Verse 3]
    And then one night when the sheriff was a-sleepin'
    We gathered all around him slowly creepin'
    Heaven help me to forget that night in the cold, cold rain
    When we beat him to death with thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain
    [Verse 4]
    Now the whip marks have all healed and I am thankful
    That there's nothing but these scars around my ankles
    But most of all I'm glad no man will be a slave again
    To a black snake whip and thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain
    To a black snake whip and thirty-five pounds of Blackjack County chain
    Blackjack County chain
    Blackjack County chain

    Please guys, don't roast me. I'm just a swiss dude who actually has no clue (yet) of country besides the stereotypes and cliches there are here. I discovered this channel by accident and good god, it opened a door for me that i thought would never be opened...ever. It feels so real and true to the roots of the music. Not like other things that i thought would be "country" You know. pickup trucks, women in daisy dukes, people line dancing and all the other prejudice. I freaking love this channel and discovered so many new styles of music! If more folks here would know about this - i dare to say - "new wave of country" they'd surely embrace and welcome it more! You gained a new subscriber and guy who wants to learn (and of course listen) more!!!!

      I don't blame you at all! Most Americans don't know the true country music. the irony to me is that this is now considered "alt Country" or even a new wave of country music when, in reality, it's actually country music's in it's truest, most original form. I'm glad you're part of the Country Music family now!

    I know this song by way of Del McCoury... Charlie sure does do it justice. As much as I like his videos that are highly produced, and I really do... but he sure earns his stripes with these honest stripped down performances. He is the real deal.

      @ComedyBros5 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hell yeah. Hard to get much better than Crockett. Him and Colter Wall are doing a fine job keeping country real.

    • @galaxyanimal
      @galaxyanimal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as the produced videos, I think Charlie should stick to what he's good at: making music. Let me have my music; I don't watch the videos anyways.

    • @ComedyBros5
      @ComedyBros5 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@galaxyanimal I disagree. I love his videos! There's a lot of country class & style to them.

    • @galaxyanimal
      @galaxyanimal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ComedyBros5 Well, as long as they aren't interfering with the music, I don't really care, as I can look at something else.

    I had the pleasure of meeting Charley and his band a few years back and I must say he is a true, honest to god gentlemen. It wasn't your typical, get your signature and go, he engaged in a meaningful conversation and took an interest in what you had to say.

    I've been covering this song for decades.... I play it half this speed, a bit more Bluegrass like, crosspicking.... great song. I never knew the author.
    I appreciate the education... It's very important to me to acknowledge the author... since I am not a songwriter.
