I'm so amazed by expert instrument players... They can take such a simple thing and make it so beautiful! While my mind appreciates all that they do, the tricks they share with all and so on, it still somehow fails to reproduce even these simple exercises. I can produce the music in my head, or even my voice, but not on an instrument. But the good news is, as long as these players post videos, I can listen and enjoy.

I’m a classically trained pianist who had to suddenly teach myself to play by ear when our Pentecostal church was without a pianist. This was back in the 1970s when there were no cheat sheets, and I also had to start playing whenever the song leader started singing. I had to instantly figure out what key he was singing in, and jumo in there. I became church pianist and served in that capacity for decades. The songs that are popular now are comparatively much easier. I sit at my piano and play along to TH-cam videos of my favorite songs. Easy peasy.

I’m a classically trained pianist who had to suddenly teach myself to play by ear when our Pentecostal church was without a pianist. This was back in the 1970s when there were no cheat sheets, and I also had to start playing whenever the song leader started singing. I had to instantly figure out what key he was singing in, and jumo in there. I became church pianist and served in that capacity for decades. The songs that are popular now are comparatively much easier. I sit at my piano and play along to TH-cam videos of my favorite songs. Easy peasy.
