Hey from Texas, when I do a 55 or 56, I use a 57 switch from American auto wire. It cures all that and has an extra position for accessories. Also appears original in the 5 dash.
I just fixed my 57 Chevy truck. All you have to do is add a diode to the sensing wire off the alternator and the back feed is stopped. I used a 6A diode off of Amazon. The back feeding comes from the brown wire off of the alternator.

Thanks for the info about American Auto Wire. I ended up using a Universal switch and it is working great. Hopefully it will hold up a while.
AAW switches are junk! Mine was and they said tough stuff! Never again
I have used 6 or 7 of them, they all work great.

Thats why you run a wire from the R terminal on the solenoid to the + coil.
Would of liked to have seen your wiring on the switch
