Thank you for this video and on Friday I got auto failed for red light turn right but I am not giving up. Next time I won’t take on red light and always take green light.
Just got my G! And a huge part of that were your videos. My anxiety was through the roof but these two videos actually helped a ton! Thank you so much! Love and support from Toronto :)
My instructor said that when you are stopped you need to check your right mirror and blind spot again just before turning. Did you do that or did you just check left and right?
Hello! Great question! Yes, it’s important to check your mirrors and blind spot again while stopped, even if you’ve already checked on the approach. Situations can change quickly-cyclists, pedestrians, or vehicles might appear unexpectedly. As your instructor said, check your blind spot, slow down, and stop if necessary to obey signs, signals, or yield to road users with the right-of-way. Once stopped, scan left-right-left, and turn when it’s safe, making sure to finish in the right lane. A final glance helps ensure your turn is as safe as possible!
In dense city traffic there is usually an expectation that you must turn or you're improperly impeding traffic. Throw that thought out of your mind. *The light* is (properly) impeding the traffic. You are the one making the call, and in the driver's seat, are at the most physical risk if you get hit from cross traffic. You can go your entire driving career without ever turning right on a red if you choose to. *The opinion of someone behind you is irrelevant.* By the same token, a smart and defensive driver never honks or crowds up on someone who could be making a right on red. You can't see what they see. And more importantly, you can't see what they *can't see*. If I'm in a tall truck/van behind you I can see the cross road is clear to the left so I might be tempted to get mad at the small 4-door sedan blocking my path. What I don't realize is that they can't see over the hood of the truck to our left. Or maybe they're 1st gear is busted and can't accelerate quickly. Or maybe they're taking the light to adjust a mirror or the radio. Or maybe they're a new driver taking things easy. Or maybe they just moved to this city and they're old place had lots of 'No Turn On Red' intersections.
Absolutely. Actually, there is anotherthing that can happen, say you want to turn right on a red, and the lane closest is free enough, as the cars are far enough. But the other lane is busy. You can make the right turn, but sometimes, someone in the other lane suddenly gets the idea to switch lanes. That can be a major problem.
@ElectricGears This is such a great perspective-thank you for sharing! Your points about visibility, safety, and being considerate of other drivers really resonate. Every situation is different, so it’s always best to assess what’s happening in your specific scenario and make the safest choice for everyone involved.
@nthdegree1269 You’re absolutely right-lane changes can be a big concern in these situations. It's so important to scan all lanes carefully and stay alert for unexpected movements.

Hello! So glad to hear the videos are helping you out! While the test may be similar, the specific rules, maneuvers, and regulations may vary between California and Pennsylvania. We recommend checking the local DMV or their website for the specific requirements in Pennsylvania. We've received feedback from test takers in other states who found these videos helpful, so hopefully, they’ll be useful for you too! Good luck, and definitely let us know how it goes-your experience could be helpful for others in the future!
i always nailed it on my practices but failed today on my test on the red light right turn because i was too nervous and didn’t think. Got another 2 weeks later so watching this. I hope i pass then 😔
You’ve got this! Nerves can definitely get the best of anyone, but the fact that you nailed it in practice shows you have the skills. Take the next two weeks to focus on staying calm and confident. Watch the videos, keep practicing, and remind yourself that you’re ready. Wishing you the best on your next test-you’ve got what it takes! 🙌
@@DriversEdDirect update: I PASSED TODAY!! The only mark down on my test was that i kept the signal on for a little too long after changing lanes (forgot to turn it off). Autofailed on my second retake first five minutes cuz of this… never wanna make a right turn on red again! But i think i feel like… im ready? If there’s a need to I think I know what to look for. Pedestrian on my way, wait till they on curb, pedestrian leaving my direction, halfway im good
Hello, correct! If you don't have to make a right on a red, it is not mandatory; you can wait for the green light. When taking the test, if possible, we suggest waiting for the light to turn green. There is a much lower chance of something going wrong that can earn you an auto-fail or a point off on your test. However, you should still know how to make a safe and legal right on red if needed. Sometimes, an examiner might ask you to turn if the wait is long and traffic is piling up behind you. Even then, your priority is to ensure it's done safely and legally. Hope this helps!
Hello! Great question! When making a left turn, you should turn into the lane that matches the one you’re currently in. So, if you’re in the leftmost lane, turn into the leftmost lane on the street you’re turning onto. This helps ensure a smooth and safe turn. Here is a video that might help: th-cam.com/video/Zgg9tg-BC_4/w-d-xo.html In this video, instructor Ben completes a variety of difficult left turns in busy intersections. Hope this helps!

Hi! Great question! Yes, it's always a good idea to do a quick shoulder check before turning right, especially to make sure there are no pedestrians or cyclists in your blind spot. It’s a good safety habit to make sure everything is clear before you make the turn. Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any questions!
@@DriversEdDirect Thank you for your response! So should my last look before turning be to the left to check for oncoming traffic or to the right to check my blind spot?
@majimeow3098 You're welcome! Great follow-up question! Before making a right turn on red, it's important to do full traffic checks. First, look left to check for oncoming traffic, then quickly check right for pedestrians or cyclists on the sidewalk. After that, do a quick left-right-left check to make sure the road and sidewalk are clear before you turn. This way, you ensure you’re covering both the road and the sidewalk safely. Hope that clears it up! Let us know if you have any more questions!
@@DriversEdDirect Thank you!! Two more questions: if I can see that the rightmost of the three lanes is occupied by parked cars and I would have to switch lanes like one or two car lengths in, can I turn directly into the second rightmost one? And if I'm in a residential area (no marked lanes) and approaching closer to the curb to prepare for my turn, should I do a shoulder check?
@@DriversEdDirectbut its not required correct? You just smog as you approach the turn, stop, look left right left then go without needing to check your mirror and blind spot again correct?
One question, if you are pulling forward after ur complete stop and u see traffic is clear, do you still have to make another full complete stop or can you keep rolling and just go?
Hello! Sorry to hear you that! If you don't have to make a right on a red, it is not mandatory; you can wait for the green light. Hello, great question! When making a right turn, unless there's a stop sign or red light, you generally don’t need to come to a full stop. However, you should always be prepared to stop if needed to yield to pedestrians, cyclists, or other traffic. Be sure to scan the crosswalk and surrounding area to ensure it’s safe to turn. At the same time, avoid stopping unnecessarily, such as at a yield sign with no oncoming traffic, as this could disrupt the flow of traffic or count against you on your driving test. Stay safe, and good luck with your test!
