    I hate going into, intersection i always wait behind line, but then sometime the cars honk me to go but i don't like that thought of being in the middle lol

      @DriversEdDirect  ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Hello and thanks for sharing! We hear you - it can definitely be stressful making these tough left turns! However, when the light turns green and the intersection is clear, it is good to move about a fourth or a third of the way into the intersection so that you are in a good potion to make your turn when a safe opening presents itself. If you remain behind the line, it will make it harder for you to clear the intersection in a timely manner (and frustrate drivers behind you, as you know first hand). Hang in there and keep practicing. It does get easier the more you do it, best of luck!!

      @@DriversEdDirectHELP Plz ❤ so for me light goes green not protected straight green light. Big ole work truck behind the line in front of me cant see into my line so i pull up in middle. And car honks at me when road is empty but i cant see the full lane as im making my left turn from the intersection because of this big truck. Car honk because i wouldnt go. But i just couldnt see. So i was gonna wait until my light turns red then take a peek then make my left turn because of this big truck. Any advice?

    • @SLIXXR
      @SLIXXR ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DriversEdDirectalso if it red cars can also run red light so what if i stick my head out window if that truck is blocking me infront of me as i make left hand turn. That will help me have more visibility bwcause i only can see half of the lane before sticking head out window. What do you think? If its tooo much ill just turn into a shop center and go that around that way.

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@SLIXXR Hello!! That is a tough situation and one that will happen from time to time. First and foremost: never make your turn if you aren't 100% sure it is safe to go. If you can't see clearly, then don't turn until you can - even if someone behind you is honking. With that said, there are things to do to set yourself up for success when a large vehicle across from you is blocking your vision:
      1) When a large truck is across from you, don't go as far into the intersection when you wait for your left turn. This extra space will give you a wider view of the road. Staying a few feet further back will make it easier for you to see.
      2) While you want to stay safely within your lane, position yourself as far left in your lane as safely possible, so that you can tilt your head to the left and see better around the obstacles that are blocking your view.
      If all else fails, just be patient and just wait for the truck that is blocking your view to turn and clear the intersection (as you suggested). Sometimes that’s just how it is and you have to play it safe, even if it means waiting a half a minute and getting honked at. If you guess and go when it’s not safe, you’ll be the one getting into an accident or getting a ticket - not the person behind you that is honking.
      Hope that helps! Please stay safe out there!

    Excellent video!! As a new driver, even though I learnt through different YT videos, this one clearly explained about certain scenarios which I never saw in other videos properly. 1. Left turn by committing into intersection, and turn during green, yellow and red signal. This clarified lot of my questions. 2. Excellent way of using Center turning lane especially if we couldn't take a complete left run and safely take left turn through the center turning lane. Wow!. May be in a week, I am going for the road test and this video gave me lot of inputs. Thank you so much Ben!!

Always make sure everything is clear (traffic, pedestrians, bikes, etc) before you start you turn. If the traffic is too heavy, making a right turn instead and going around the block is a great option. Thanks again and please stay safe!

    Thanks a lot for putting together this video, as left turns on intersections can be one of the hardest parts of driving for many people, including myself. After watching the video, I have a few questions about some things I saw:
    1. First of all, what is the "ideal" speed (if there is any) when making your turn? As new drivers (and even experienced ones) it is difficult to make (and judge) sharp turns at high speeds, but unfortunately lots of people on the road aren't very understanding of that. Some left turns are incredibly sharp and if there are many cars next to you it's better to go a bit slow than to risk ending in the wrong lane or hitting a car.
    2. Around 43:20 in the video, you made a left turn into the center left turn lane, then made a lane change to the right. I'm not sure if I am missing anything, but from the DMV handbook it is advised to use the center left turn lane for left turns and U-turns and there is no mention of using it for lane changes. I'd appreciate it if you could clarify exactly what the center left turn lane can and cannot be used for.
    Again, thank you for showing us all these left turns, I learned a lot!!

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm glad you found the video helpful! Here are answers to your questions:
      Ideal Speed for Making a Left Turn:
      When making a left turn, the ideal speed should be slow enough to maintain control and safely navigate the turn, yet fast enough not to disrupt the flow of traffic. Typically, this means slowing down to about 10-15 mph before entering the turn.
      Safety Over Speed: Safety is job #1, so it's better to take the turn at a speed that allows you to stay in your lane and avoid collisions. Experienced drivers behind you should understand the necessity of slowing down for a turn.
      Practice Makes Perfect: Over time, with practice, you'll get better at judging the right speed for different turns.
      Use of the Center Left Turn Lane:
      Main Purpose of the Center Left Turn Lane: The center left turn lane is primarily for making left turns and U-turns where permitted.
      Other common Purpose of the Center Left Turn Lane: It also provides a space for vehicles to wait for a gap in oncoming traffic before completing their turn, after turning onto a major street from a side street or driveway. While you do not use center left turn lanes to make lane changes, if you are in one after completing a turn onto a major street, you do need to merge out of the center turn lane into traffic by making a safe lane change.
      I hope these clarifications help!

      Turning on yellow can be done only if we are committed into the intersection right? We have 3 second to clear the intersection. If we start committing into intersection in yellow we shall possibly blocking the traffic right?

    • @tidus7081
      @tidus7081 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skr0nytbe389 yes but thats the problem with the system. you are forced into these "committed" situations because you are forced to go into the middle of the intersection and wait for an opening. • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, exactly! You of course wait for it to be safe, and then you clear the intersection when you can, even if the light has turned red - like you said, you can't remain blocking the intersection. Hope that helps!

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hello! On a left turn, you can technically turn into any open lane, as long as it is safe. However, we recommend the lane closest to the middle yellow line because it is usually the safest - in case the cars across from you are turning right and they turn into the other lane. • @lailari57
    @lailari57 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I love this video because I’ve done turns on these same streets so it’s very familiar and very helpful. Balboa/Devonshire, Lassen/Reseda, Reseda/Devonshire (which is a notorious intersection), Nordhoff/Reseda etc. Road test is soon so I’m getting in as much practice as possible. My trouble right now is I tend to accelerate as soon as I come out of the turn. I know I should coast a little after the turn and then out of the turn accelerate up to speed. It’s almost as if my brain is trying to push the car to get out of the way in case the car behind me is trying to bushwhack me. You know these streets, some of these drivers around CSUN are quite aggressive and I have had several race around me as I was going the posted speed limit. They speed past a sign outside a middle or high school marked 25 mph. It’s a fight not to go above the speed limit because they are going above the speed limit.

    I have some trouble with the protected left turns with the unexpected green arrow such as in #4. The first car in line with the green light (NOT arrow), should be waiting on the middle of the intersection and not behind the light/crosswalk, correct? Essentially when we are not sure when the arrow will turn green, treat the regular green light like an unprotected left turn.

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello,Great question! If the light is a regular green (NOT a green arrow), you should treat it as an unprotected left turn. This means the first car in line should move into the intersection (as long as they’re certain they’ll be able to complete the turn without causing gridlock) and wait until it’s safe to turn.
      If the green arrow unexpectedly appears while you’re already in the intersection, you’ll have the right-of-way to complete your turn. Until then, always yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians, just like you would in any unprotected turn situation.
      I hope that clears it up!

      Hello! The oncoming traffic going straight would have the right-of-way. Also, you want to be aware of vehicles across from you that are turning right - they should turn into the rightmost lane, leaving your the left lane open to turn into, but you never know what the other vehicle might do. In that particular example, you can see that we had a lot of cars across from us who made last second moves or didn't use their turn signals. We had to assume they might go straight, so that is why we were patient and yielded to them until we were certain it was safe to make the turn. Hope that helps!

      Hello, great question! If the light turns red and you have already entered the intersection (either fully or partially), you are required to make your turn when it is safe and clear. If there are oncoming cars still coming (running the red light), you wait for them to clear and then make your turn when safe. Cross-traffic from the sides should wait for you to clear the intersection before they go on their green light. Just make sure it is 100% safe before your turn, but definitely make the turn... if you do not turn you will be blocking the crosswalk or intersection.

    Thanks for the great video!!!!! This compilation really helps build my confidence. I ran into an "extreme" case today when making an unprotected left turn, and I'd appreciate it if I can get some suggestions: I inched forward and had to wait until the yellow light to find a safe gap after the long oncoming traffic. Normally I can use the gap, but a very long line of pedestrians (tour team) were still crossing when it was DON'T WALK signal for them. As they kept crossing, cars on my right have moved into the intersection, making it impossible for me to safely finish my left turn after the peds have finished crossing. I could hardly find an embarrassing position where I won't block the ped's crossing I was on and the traffic coming from my left to my right. I had two questions: 1. Is it ok for me to stay put at that position, wait for the signal as if i was still behind the stop line, and restart the left turn procedure in the next green light? 2. Do I ever have the right-of-way simply because I was already in the intersection, and that cars coming from my right should yield to me? Thanks again for the super helpful video!

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for your kind words! I'm glad it helped build your confidence-situations like the one you described can be challenging even for experienced drivers. Let’s break down your questions step by step:
      1. Is it okay to stay put in the intersection and restart the left-turn procedure during the next green light?
      Generally, no, it’s not ideal to remain in the intersection through an entire light cycle. If you’re already in the intersection waiting to turn left when the light turns yellow, you should proceed to complete your turn as soon as it is safe-even if that means waiting for the pedestrians to finish crossing before moving cautiously.
      However, if you cannot safely complete your turn (due to blocking pedestrians, traffic, or other hazards), you may have to stay put momentarily until the next light cycle. This is not ideal, as intersections are meant to stay clear to avoid gridlock or confusion, but safety is the priority.
      2. Do I have the right-of-way because I’m already in the intersection?
      Yes, you do have the right-of-way once you are legally in the intersection to complete your left turn. Drivers approaching the intersection from your right or oncoming traffic should yield to you because you’re already there and actively completing your maneuver.
      That said, pedestrians always have the right-of-way, even if they’re crossing against a “DON’T WALK” signal. It’s frustrating, but legally and practically, you must wait for them to clear before proceeding.
      How to Handle a Similar Situation in the Future:
      Anticipate potential problems: If it’s rush hour, you’re in a pedestrian-heavy area, or you see large groups (like tour groups) near the crosswalk, take extra time to assess whether you’ll be able to complete your turn safely before rolling into the intersection. If there’s any doubt, stay behind the stop line until you’re confident the path will be clear to complete your turn without causing gridlock.
      Avoid getting boxed in: If it looks like you might get trapped in the intersection, it’s sometimes better to wait behind the stop line and assess the situation rather than inching too far forward.
      Thank you for bringing up such an interesting situation! It’s a great reminder of how real-life scenarios can test even the best driving instincts. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask-I’m happy to help!

    • @rogerdtz
      @rogerdtz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DriversEdDirect Thanks for your thorough explanation! Seems like I should have decided whether to inch across the stop line by observing the pedestrians & pay extra careness to large groups. But I'm also afraid that this may be hard to predict (e.g. if i decide not to commit, but the group obeys signal and stops crossing when the light turns yellow/red, then I will waste the cycle and get horns from behind). So according to your suggestions on Q1 and Q2, in that particular situation, is it appropriate to start my left turn when 1) the light turns yellow 2) oncoming traffic isn't running the red light, and politely wait in front of the crossing to wait for the group to clear? My understanding is that oncoming traffic and traffic on my right won't be able to drive into that road anyway because of the group. Given that I have the right-of-way, it is OK for me to wait in front of that ped crossing, possibly followed by other cars from other directions.

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello again! The situation you’re describing is indeed a tough one to navigate, and the truth is, there are no easy answers that will apply 100% of the time. I know it can be frustrating, especially with the peer pressure from other drivers-but always remember that the safety of pedestrians, yourself, and other drivers comes before appeasing someone with a loud horn. Sometimes, we just have to put up with aggressive drivers without escalating the situation. At the end of the day, if you give in to peer pressure and accidentally hit someone, you'll be the one paying the costs, while the person honking at you will drive away without any consequences.
      Your understanding of the situation and approach to handling it is thoughtful, but let me clarify a few points and provide guidance for ensuring safety and compliance with traffic rules:
      Inching Across the Stop Line:
      Observing pedestrians is crucial, but only move across the stop line when it is safe and lawful to do so. If pedestrians have the right of way, you must yield completely until they’ve cleared the crosswalk. Large groups can indeed make it harder to predict when the crosswalk will clear, so patience is key.
      Starting Your Left Turn on Yellow:
      It’s generally not ideal to start your left turn because the light turns yellow. A yellow light is a warning that the signal will turn red, and it’s meant to allow vehicles already in the intersection to clear safely.
      If you’re already in the intersection, waiting to turn left, and the light turns yellow, you should complete your turn when it’s safe to do so, as you’ll need to clear the intersection before the light turns red.
      Waiting in Front of the Pedestrian Crossing:
      The approach of waiting in front of the pedestrian crossing may work in some scenarios, but it comes with risks. If you block the crosswalk, it can disrupt pedestrian movement and potentially result in a citation for failing to yield. Additionally, drivers from other directions may not anticipate your position, which could create confusion or hazards.
      Instead, remain behind the stop line until the crosswalk clears. Once it’s clear, proceed into the intersection to prepare for your turn, but only if you’re confident you can complete the maneuver safely.
      Dealing with Pressure from Other Drivers:
      It’s common to feel pressured by drivers behind you, but remember that safety and legality take precedence over their impatience. If the pedestrian group is large or slow, it’s better to wait for the next light cycle rather than risk a hazardous situation or a traffic violation.
      Suggested Approach for Your Scenario:
      Remain behind the stop line until the crosswalk clears or it’s evident that pedestrians are no longer crossing (e.g., the light changes, and they stop crossing).
      Once the crosswalk clears, enter the intersection and assess oncoming traffic. If it’s safe, complete your left turn.
      If the light turns yellow while you’re already in the intersection, proceed with your turn promptly, ensuring oncoming traffic is slowing or stopping as expected.
      Prioritize safety of pedestrians, your vehicle, and others on the road over the impatience of drivers behind you.
      By following these steps, you’ll be able to navigate this situation safely and confidently while minimizing risks.
      Hope that helps! The fact that you’re thinking these scenarios through shows your commitment to being a safe driver-we LOVE to see it! Stay safe out there!

      Hello! I saw you asked the question in another video but I'll put my response here so you don't miss it. Sorry to hear about that-it sounds like a tough spot to be in during your test. From what you described, it seems like you made the right move. If the light turns red and you're in the intersection, you’re required to complete your turn once it’s safe. If oncoming traffic is still coming (running the red), wait for them to clear, and then turn safely. Cross-traffic should wait for you to finish your turn before moving on their green.
      Just make sure it’s 100% safe before turning, but definitely complete the turn-you don't want to block the intersection or crosswalk. Without being there, it’s hard to know exactly what the examiner saw or took issue with. The DMV may fail you if they feel you waited too long or didn’t handle it safely.
      Best of luck on your next test, and hopefully, you won’t face another tricky situation!

    What if we are in the middle of the intersection and the light turns red? We must turn, correct? Since we can’t be blocking the intersection?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi there, that's a great question! If the light turns red and you are in the middle of the intersection, you are required to make your turn when it is safe and clear. Hope this helps!

    do i have to yield on a left turn(unprotected) if there is no oncoming traffic ?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello! If everything is clear and there are no pedestrians or cars present with the right of way, then you may make your left turn without stopping or waiting first. Hope that answers your question!

    would i fail my drivers test if i pull into the intersection on an unprotected left turn and while im waiting it turns red before i could make the turn on green?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello and GREAT question! Generally, you won’t fail your driving test for this if you handle it correctly. If no one ever made this kind of left turn, we'd probably have never-ending gridlock! Here's how you do it in real life AND during your DMV test: If you enter the intersection while the light is green and wait to make your left turn, you are allowed to complete your turn once oncoming traffic has stopped, even if the light turns red. Just ensure that you proceed safely and yield to any remaining oncoming traffic or pedestrians in the crosswalk. When everything is 100% safe and clear, then you can finish your turn. The cross traffic should be patient and wait for you; they technically shouldn't enter the intersection until you have cleared it. Hope that helps!

    Okay so flashing yellow yeild sign or left yeild on green do i stop before the limit line then pull up if flashing or green after looking left right left how would that sequence go wouldnt i look left right than left again than straight ahead and then to the left for people on cross walk when do i past the limit line on yeild on green just after left right left

      Hello! Here's a quick tip for making left turns at solid green or flashing yellow lights:
      No Stop Needed: You don’t have to stop at the limit line before entering the intersection. If the road is clear of cars and pedestrians, you can smoothly make your left turn without stopping. Always remember to check for traffic.
      Here’s my usual approach to a left turn (though it might vary based on the situation):
      1 - Signal: Turn on your left signal.
      2 - Check your mirrors
      3 - Blind-Spot Check: Look over your left shoulder to check your blind spot and the sidewalk before moving into the left-turn lane.
      4- Scan the Intersection: As you approach, scan the intersection quickly: look left-right-left.
      5 - Make the Turn: If everything is clear, make your turn.
      6 - Stop if Needed: If you need to stop for an obstacle, keep scanning while you wait.
      7 - Final Check: Before turning, look over your left shoulder again and quickly check left-right-left to ensure it's safe.
      Hope this helps!

    Can you discuss issues with a car being second in a left turn lane making the left prior to the original car to enter the intersection. I was patiently waiting for safe opportunity to make the left turn as the turning lane light was off. Still green though to go straight. Another driver got impatient and made left behind me cutting me off. Cursing me out like I am one in wrong.

    if you move out a bit to the intersection on a a solid green and it turns yellow when you are waiting does that mean there should always be enough time to make the turn, in other words if it goes yellow the oncoming traffic should be stopping ?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! If the light is going yellow, it is a warning that the light will soon be turning red and that you need to clear the intersection when it is safe. In general, when a light turns yellow, oncoming traffic should never accelerate at all - they SHOULD attempt to slow down and stop if safe. If they are already too close to the intersection to safely stop, then they can continue to coast through the intersection on the yellow light using their momentum (but again, they should not accelerate). Using this approach, oncoming traffic should be able to either safely stop or make the yellow light by coasting, but never have to "run the red light". With that said, not everyone follows the traffic rules, so if you are waiting to make a left turn with your car already in the intersection and the light turns yellow, you must be 100% sure that all oncoming cars are slowing to a stop or have cleared the intersection before you commit to your left turn. Unfortunately, many oncoming cars will see the yellow light and incorrectly accelerate to try and beat the red light, if that makes sense. So please be safe!
      Hope that helps!

      Hello! You can do it, have confidence in your abilities and just do your best. Before any right turn, always SMOG (*S*ignal, *M*irror, *O*ver the Shoulder, *G*o) - you actually do this before every lane change and especially before turning right and left. Always check your mirrors and over your shoulder for traffic and pedestrians before turning.
      Also, you want to check left-right-left before entering ANY intersection, whether you are turning or not. You will usually do this left-right-left after you SMOG as described above
      Check out this video on right turns: th-cam.com/video/8jGVnb4ab2o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=oYnFV1ZDUYv-ePEH
      Here's a good part in another video where instructor Jay explains all the times you need to do you mirror and shoulder checks: th-cam.com/video/m7h5bLIIoNI/w-d-xo.html - I would actually watch the entire video, it will help!
      Hope those videos help you out, best of luck to you!!

      @@DriversEdDirect Thank you so even if going you're hypothetically going straight turning left or right or any turn in the universe on a rolling right or if the light is green or left or if im going straight that I should always look left right left again before entering the intersection never enter intersection or complete turns without doing left right left first correct

      How do i treat parking into a parking space do i smog and still look left rigjt left or treat them like lane changes? @DriversEdDirect

  • @allsoundsyouneed
    @allsoundsyouneed ปีที่แล้ว +2

    But what if while turning left that your mirror passed the curb or Pedestrian line and the light turn red and you stay at the middle of intersection 😮?
    And still you couldn’t find a gap

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In that case, you must still wait for a safe gap and then make your turn to turn. The other cross-traffic should wait for you to go, even if they get a green light. They are not supposed to enter the intersection until it is clear. Once you clear the intersection and finish your turn, then they can begin to go.
      Hope that helps!
