Day 5 Bikepacking the South Downs and the Surrey Hills

  • Having restructured the route, I headed off towards Kent and some of the more famous climbs on route. The only problem I faced though, is would I survive on the Kent roads, not from torturing myself up the ridiculous climbs. But by avoiding the terrible driving, as I was deemed to be an obstacle in the way, rather than a human being riding a bike!
    Would I survive some of the worst driving, I’d ever experienced on a bike?

    Thanks for that Darren. Despite the unpleasant sections it seemed to me that you had lots of lovely stretches in our green and pleasant land. Not likely that I will be cycling in Kent thank goodness, I'll stick to Somerset me thinks. I lived in Ditchling as a boy though so your climb up to the beacon brought back memories. Take care, Pete.

      Thanks Pete, I did have a really enjoyable day up until the last part. The campsite I started from, was the best of the week by miles. So I had a great nights sleep and felt good on the bike all day. But after a couple of wing mirrors nearly hit me, I started to get scared. It was a shame, but after I’d calmed down, I was still enjoying the trip.

    I share your rage. When I first started cycling, living in SW London, it was in the Surrey Hills. Far too much dangerous traffic. Now in Cheshire & Peak District ❤. In busy areas I try to use a mix of tracks & the tiny quiet lanes leading to them. I find it helps. Keep going & stay safe.

      Thanks Jonathan, it doesn’t take long to just wait and pass safely. They’ll only end up catching up the car in front again and sitting up there backside! It makes no sense! Im looking forward to getting up to the Peak District for some rides, it looks beautiful.

    Looks like that was a well deserved rant at the appalling close passes! Really boils my piss. 😡 But that said, another great video Darren and some splendid houses in ‘the garden of England’. Well done mate. Solid climbing as usual. 👏💪

      Thanks Steve, could you tell, I was a bit angry!! 😂 it would have been a lovely area to ride, but for the drivers!

      @@DarrenPhillips Huge kudos to you. That was an awesome adventure. I live near Dorking so your video 6 was on my patch. You'll remember Barhatch I bet ;-) Great videos as well. very cool.

    Another amazing ride. Although I wouldn’t have enjoyed that last hill with the cars so many of them!

      Thanks Michelle, it was incredibly scary. There’s not a lot that rattles me like that. They were just idiots, more interested in getting home 5 seconds quicker, than seeing me as a person and not an obstacle. I wouldn’t recommend cycling in Kent!

      @@DarrenPhillips I definitely wont be cycling there far too busy for me car wise, like you Im used to quiet empty roads most of the time.

    Amazing effort again, Darren. Be interested to know your thoughts re cycling in the south east v the south west. I cycle in Somerset and the Cotswolds and never feel as persecuted as a cyclist there as I do when I head back to Sussex. Guess it’s number of people and cars, but still 🙁 Keep safe sir

      Thanks Andy, to date, Cycling in Kent has been my worst experience on a bike for poor driving. I wouldn’t even say it’s the South East, as I didn’t have any problems up until this day and as soon as I got back to Surrey, it drastically improved. There were as many cars in Surrey, as there were in Kent, but the drivers were a lot more respectful. I think it was as simple as being that close to the motorway, and drivers not compensating for being in smaller roads with slower speeds and driving flat out to get home.
      I can ride for hours in Somerset without seeing a car.

    Darren,
    I have ridden around the roads in Kent, and the roads you have chosen are narrow and boxed in.. Its never nice to be passed to closely , and it annoys me even more when there's loads of road to use and still they come too close ...I think if you rode those roads often it would come easier , there are hills down south ..

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Tony, I ride a lot of narrow lanes, busy roads and boxed in roads, but never have I experienced driving this dangerous, you may get the one impatient driver a month. But this was nearly every car that passed me. It was very scary 😟

    Your day started so peaceful and ended on a terrifying stretch of road. I’m actually surprised they allow cyclists on those roads. So narrow and no shoulders.
    Thanks for sharing 👍🏼

      My experience of cycling all around Kent was very similar unfortunately. I’ve cycled in a lot of places and never felt that nervous on my bike. I did still have a great day that day. Apart from the first day, it was the best I felt on the bike all week, I was flying. It didn’t help that the last few climbs were just off the motorway. Hopefully, I’ll never have to go back there! Thanks Wayne

      It's not cycles that should be banned! Cyclists are vulnerable, ecologically benign road users and should be protected NOT penalised to compensate for others' poor driving 😤

    Enjoying this even the rant! Think every cyclist can relate to your feelings and frustrations at ignorant drivers, my last near miss certainly unnerved me like never before! I wouldn’t advise anyone to cycle tour around NZ!!! On another note how the hell do you find the willpower to just ride down a hill,just to stop at the bottom turn around and cycle back up, must be mad!!!!😂

      we have done lots of cycle touring around NZ on a tandem and certainly agree about the traffic although none of our incidents have involved traffic accident only mechanical failures some quite serious we have once cycled in France Bordeaux and Britney on the Velo Odyssey and really enjoyed it because of the traffic's courtesy towards us
      cheers

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vernepavreal7296 cycling in France is on another level. The drivers on the opposite side of the road move over to allow cars passing you to give you room. If only it happened elsewhere!

      Have to agree, I have cycled toured around Brittany, and from St Malo to Nice and on no occasion did I encounter any bad driving or drivers, it was an absolute pleasure to be on the bike. A big thumbs up to French driver👍👍👍
