I worked in a bank for several years and it was quite an eye opener. So many people in debt for stupid stuff. We need to learn to be satisfied with what we can afford.
We are living in an age where buy now pay later and frequently replacing what we already have is totally normalised. It's hard to break the cycle, and to even recognise you are trapped in it!
I like it when people think I have no money. It shows me the kind of people others are cause if they treat me well I know that I am valued for who I am not what I have.

Dear Vicky, I love your channel, thank you. Alas, I'm in my 60's now and have wasted so much money/loss of pension because I was an idiot. It would be so much more useful for children to be taught financial management at school! However, even at my age I can appreciate that been frugal is important and worth doing for peace of mind. Until recently the word 'frugal' made me very judgemental as i dismissed people as mean if they said they were frugal. I was a fool, and because watching channels like yours, I now know that's not what it means at all. So i have to make peace with my poor choices financially and move forward the best I can. Amazingly I'm finding it very empowering even though my income is very small. I have saved a lot of money already on shopping by just doing simple swaps and by having a go at doing a budget. Thank you so much for your free budget planner, I downloaded it and it makes things easier to understand/work out. I think that your skills as a journalist really pay off on this channel, you present things in a factual and easy to understand manner. No fibs/filler just practical great advice, thank you again!
I 100% agree budgeting and money should be taught at school. My girls have been taught how to count money at primary school, but I would love to see them taught about credit and debt and savings/investments at secondary school. We are doing our best to instil in them good spending habits. I think it's never too late to turn things around and start making some changes and it sounds like you are already making amazing progress! Well done, and I'm really glad the free planner helps! I love mine, just keeps me on track! Thanks so much for watching.
@@TheMummyBubble Thanks Vicky, I forgot to mention that I really enjoy your psychological insights too. Despite my many faults I'm lucky in that I have always been grateful for what I do have , and in today's world having the luxury of being able to make adjustments while so many are starving (in this country too!!!) is not lost on me. Thank you
some people just dont like themselves, they will never be enough. They will buy more and more but it will never be enough and it will never fill the void. Practice gratitude and wonder, a basic mobile phone and everyday car are miraculous really.
My husband and I live in a caravan, we used to live in a smaller beat up one that we renovated then we upgraded for a bigger one when our second child was born. We have now decided to not have a third child for a number of reasons (our finances being one of those). We have no debts, some savings for me to get a driving licence and a second hand car (we have no means of transport and it is difficult with 2 children). Our next savings will be for a house deposit and even if it takes us 15 years to get it we don't mind. We just live within our means and don't buy clothes unless we can't fix the ones we have. We try to be mindful and keep our objectives in mind at all time.
Best of luck with saving for your home! Sounds like you are doing all of the right things to get yourselves there. We would love to upgrade our property but the next step up for us is eye-wateringly expensive in our area. But I am grateful for what we have and will still keep trying to save so we can get there!
@TheMummyBubble Thank you, we know it will take us few years but we are also trying not too buy too much toys for the children and we have a cheap soft play pass that keeps them more occupied than a ton of toys. It's all about being mindful with our spendings.
"Sense of Enough" is so powerful! As our youngest was heading of to college (university), we added on to our home. Why? A certain special someone wanted a bigger kitchen and I jumped on the bandwagon and wanted a bigger family room. We didn't go completely crazy, and the new expanded spaces are really, really wonderful (and we enjoy it daily), but we could have "survived" by not expanding our home. Beyond that, I realized that the happiest I've been was in our previous, smaller home. If Cher sang "If I could turn back time...". We're in a good place and I'm grateful for that!
This is true, i live in social housing among homeowners who have swanky cars, electric vehicles etc, where as i have a little beaten up old nissan micra thats cheap and too reliable to part with. The married couple with the big motorhome plus jeep now, which they have added to their haul, frequently have problems, forever got the mechanic round, they constantly look as miserable and stressed as hell all the time, i don't aspire to be like these people and am happy to continue looking poor with my reliable poor old car lol 😆 keeping up with the Jones's is a price im not willing to pay!
My brother has a swanky car, but is constantly borrowing our Mum's old banger to go shopping because he's too terrified to leave his baby in a public car park in case it gets dinged or when he goes to London because Mum's car is so old it doesn't qualify for the congestion charge 😅 makes you wonder what on earth the point is in having it at all???
When you have children you never have anything till they leave home and get on their feet. Then I found I could save and live within my means. My advice is don't take the debt journey at all throughout your whole life.
Well done! It's definitely a trap I fell into in my 20s. And I didn't notice what was going on until my 30s. Luckily I've had time to turn it all around, but so wish I had spent more time in my 20s being savvy about budgeting and saving a little more. Still, I am so glad I am free from that cycle of trying to keep up.
Love hearing your advice, it really makes me sit and reflect on my own situation and how I can improve things. I did your no spend January which made me aware of just how much money I waste every month. As a result I am now setting up a standing order to transfer money into a savings account and in 2025 I hope to watch it grow (little steps and all that lol) Please continue with tips and eye openers so I can continue to learn and grow!
I am so glad to hear your no spend Jan went well! That's such great news. As a reformed shopaholic who did nothing to save in my 20s, I love talking about this stuff not just because I find it really interesting but also it helps keep me accountable. I will definitely keep talking about it, as it's great motivation for me too!
You are right. I do spend money on nice clothes and shoes but I keep them years. I see people spending money all the time I try not to influenced by others. Have you noticed that most rich people only mix with their own kind. Their conversation is about how they are spending copious amounts of money and their next holiday and the one after that. Poorer friends feel uncomfortable in most of the conversation. Some sad poorer friends are sometimes going into debt just to try and show that they have something financially in common with rich friends I don’t bother, I show interest and adore the latest buys. I don’t try and have competition with others. I am just glad that I have money in the bank and pay my bills. Rebecca 8:08
I definitely think social pressures are such a huge struggle to fight against. Especially when spending money always looks really fun when it's packaged prettily for social media. I would rather have the comfort of money to cover us if my income were to vanish than bragging rights any day.
I have to say seeing ppl travel the world makes me want to do that so I’ve set goals to travel. I don’t have desire for fancy clothes/shoes or car anymore just want to save and travel make memories cause I ain’t getting any younger and then have regrets of not going ❤

@ I am glad I am not the only person who thinks that I am not trying to break the rules, just be sensible An example of this is dry January So no one drinks for a month, that’s great. Then February people go mad drinking the pub dry! It’s the same with money. You can’t beat self control as being at the top of the list for good money management Ps I bought a duster today that’s been advertised on the telly (£3). Ok I broke the frugal rules, but I am human after all I do have a freezer full of yellow label items So when it comes to balance I think I am on the right side of caring for my money. Rebecca x

I am not trying to break the rules, just be sensible
An example of this is dry January
So no one drinks for a month, that’s great. Then February people go mad drinking the pub dry!
It’s the same with money. You can’t beat self control as being at the top of the list for good money management
Ps I bought a duster today that’s been advertised on the telly (£3). Ok I broke the frugal rules, but I am human after all
I do have a freezer full of yellow label items
So when it comes to balance I think I am on the right side of caring for my money. Rebecca x
you dont have to try very hard to look poor in this awful country,
Just remember Galatians 6:4....😊😊😊😊
open concept kitchens and such are ugly. Never do I get jealous of that style. lol
Haha, I just love the idea of a massive kitchen island. Don't love the idea of paying to knock down walls and reconfigure the whole of the downstairs of our house though. I'll just have to admire others from afar!

And then we also get the ones that say that we should get rid of our limiting believes and already act like we have everything in abundance 😝😝!!
