Happened to me through one of those phishing emails. I fell for it somehow, but back then i thought i would take a break wich i wouldn't come back from. So i didn't care. A month ago i recovered and got a zulrah pet out of it. And luckily my defence was still 45.
i came back to 86 smithing and a 3m cash stack from some cannonball botting

Most companies are pretty chill when it comes to recovering accounts. I used to do that to hack into runescape accounts. I'd get their email address from the recovery form then go to gmail/hotmail/yahoo/etc then recover their email. Then recover their account or if more steps were needed i'd recover their facebook so i could get personal information on them. It's a LOT harder now but back in 2011 it was easy to convince someone behind the desk to just reset the password if you knew basic details.
I recovered a 17 year old rs3 account in like a total of 20 minutes after not playing it for 3 years and previous time I played was a whole different country.
My account got hacked and it got recovered the day after I realised I was banned. Jagex seem to be pretty chill about helping out people who have never even put money into the game.
@@zets8238 How do you do this? Who do i contact? My account didnt even allow an appeal so i quit. I know if they have a person look into it ill be proven innocent. I gambled on the account once 100k but it claims i was botting. I was basically just grinding out the quest lines and my stats wer basically just for that plus a boat load of smithing as blast furnace was my main income. On that note, it only had a couple mil. Theres no reason i can think of that theyd think i was botting.
Update. It said i couldnt appeal when trying to log into a world, didnt investigate further at the time, but someone in another youtube thread said they did a "general" appeal. no idea what that was but decided to try to find out. I could log into my account, just not my character into a world and play. Went to appeal ban on jagexs site and low and behold, a full 8 months after the ban i find out i could appeal. Couple days later got an email, they reset my password said my account was compromised. Log in well shit, they were right. No gold, valuables gone (fuckers lost my graceful) but like 8k wine in the bank. must have been hacked, hacker botted my account, ban hammer. sucks i lost my bank and graceful but needed 70 agility anyway for quests and dam...im just happy to have my character back and play again
About a year or so into osrs launch I quit playing. Came back about 6 months later to find out I’d been hacked and my account was used as a green dragon bot farm. Went from 70 ish strength to 94. Account had about 40 mil worth of bones / hides on. Which was more than what I had on it when I quit. Result.
I have 2 accounts 1 got perm banned for me botting about 2 years ago and I did . I created a new account right after and trained it legit I quit and went back to it about 5 months ago to notice that account I had to recover password did that and noticed it was also perm banned . I recovered password and then sent a claim that I was hacked I got the account back with 90 smithing + 15mill and my old account that was perm banned 2 years ago was also unbanned .

Sooo, I quit OSRS for about a year and a half. I wasn't even very high level yet, maybe like base 50's ish or lower, hadn't hardly done any quests. I didn't even know my account had been hacked, but when I came back over a year later to start playing again, I ended up needing to recover it. Thought it was weird.... I had no problems recovering it though and logged right in to find that my bank pin had been reset. There was hardly anything in the bank, nothing of value, and pretty much all that was left was a bunch of miscellaneous junk on the main tab. A few more quests had been completed as well. The WEIRDEST part though; upon checking my stats I found that I suddenly had 99 thieving! And not just 99, but something like 23m xp in the skill... Absolutely confused, I decided to check my GE history for perhaps just a bit of insight. For as far back as my GE history would scroll, I saw that Ancient Scepter's had been sold. Dozens of them sold, for tens or possibly hundreds of mils. And those were just the ones I could see; who knows how many had actually been acquired and sold on the GE!
After seeing my stats, the GE history, and finding some stone artifacts in my bank, it was obvious that my account must have been used to bot Pyramid Plunder while I was away. I fortunately don't have any reports or bans on my account from it, and literally all gp and items of value were already traded off the account by the time I recovered it, which I think is odd. If the account was purchased and used for botting, I'm not sure why they would stop before it got banned? But hey, I'm not complaining! I would be devastated, as this is my main account of 13+ years. The only real downside is that now my account looks sketchy AF, and I get a lot of crap from other players in-game for it. Even when I try to tell people what happened, they don't believe me. At this point, I just either tell people that I love Pyramid Plunder, or that I make my brother play it for me to make money lol. I hate lying, but it's just easier than trying to explain the truth to people, which they don't believe anyway. And lately, I've been putting a lot of work and effort into my stats and have a handful of other 99's now too, so it's not so bad anymore :)

I had something happen to me as well, I took a break from RS since 2007 then came back to try it out again. I logged in to see that I was actually still where I probably was when I logged out then.
All my friends were offline and I was left there with the feeling of sadness, reminiscing the times I'd wake up at 1 AM to play with my friends of a different timezone when my parents were sleeping.

I recovered my account after taking a 2 week break last year. Tried logging in and my account was already online. After I got it back I logged in at barrows wearing mystic hat and robe top dragon legs and boots with Ivan's blast setup. Went from 54 to 76 mage. According to the kill count in barrows chest it had done over 1600 chests in 2 weeks
This actually happened to me on my WoW account back around 2009. My account was hacked and then used for botting for around 4 days before I was able to recover it. I lost those 4 days of playing on that account but I was playing on my 2nd account while trying to get my main account back. It was weird being on my 2nd account and seeing my main logged in and playing. Once it was finally recovered I actually ended up making money because of the botting the person did. They basically sold everything I had and just farmed a ton of gathering materials like ores and herbs. Once I got the account back a GM restored all of my stuff that had been sold or destroyed, and left all the ore and herbs instead of taking them. I think I made around 10k gold from it, which was a decent amount of money back then. It was shortly after the launch of a new expansion so those materials were in pretty high demand which is how I made so much gold out of it.
With that chunk of essentially free gold I was able to flip some high value items and turn it into even more gold which was awesome. I miss those days. Now the game has gone to shit lol.

But people do get hacked with all the security I think they should just add a few more security issues like questions only you would know... Like first pet name. So many possibilitys and if they attempt to get into it after 3 attempts it's gets locked and you have to prove its you to get back into account be a pain in the ass for the team but would stop alot more people getting hacked
happened to me too lol. a couple years ago i decides to come back to rs3, but accidentally made an osr account. made it to the last part of tutorial island before realizing i got it wrong and logged out of osr account. a couple weeks ago i decided to give osr pvm a try and log into my osr account. i find it at the GE, buying flax at 3 gp and selling it at 4. overall had 150k in gp and flax. so i put a pin on the bank and changed my password so they cant log back in on my account. pleasant surprise since that gp helped start up the combat xp grind
I had a similar experience, I stopped playing rs2 in 2010 after eoc, after I moved in 2017 I got bored and found the recoveries on a notebook. Before I stopped, I had 70-80's, when I recovered it, it was maxed with 200m fm xp and 700m gp.
It was rs3 though soo I bought random noobs whatever they wanted till I ran out of gp then made an osrs account.

Jagex is able to look at where in the world your account was looged into at the time of the ban. If you were playing in the U.S. for years, then suddenly you were botting in Venezuela for a month or 2, a ban appeal will probably go pretty smooth.

I've had many accounts banned for botting. Most of them i was able to get unbanned with a sob story about getting hacked. I don't play anymore but my main bot account i had unpermabanned 6 times or so. The sad part is the only account i didn't bot on, they refused to unban. this was back in like 2006. i even pretended to be my mom, (i was like 13) and they refused to unban my ACTUAL account.
I don't really play RS, but this kind of thing happened to me in 2011 when I used to play World of Warcraft. My account got hacked, and when I got it back, all but one of my characters had been deleted. The one remaining character, a lvl 74 tauren druid had had all his items sold and was parked Crystalsong Forest in his undies with an inventory absolutely STUFFED with herbs and a bunch of gold that I didn't have before. I got all my characters restored and all the items returned in the mail, but I got to keep the herbs, the gold, and the maxed out herbalism skill on my druid!
Same thing happened to me a while back, logged in after an extended hiatus to see i was now max combat, left off at 93-99-99, thought i was just having a lapse in memory until i saw a tab in my bank with hundreds and anti drag shields, place holders for drops from green drags and some mid tier food

I had my mid level account hacked last year. When I finally recovered it (since I took a few month break and came back to a hacked account.....) it was stood at the Grand Exchange wearing those robes and fan that all the dicers wear, with an additional 3mil in the inventory.
This happened to me for RS3, I recovered my account after a couple of years not playing, and I went from Lv 70-80 range to Lv 112 range and Lv 100 hp. I didn’t have any 99s before so this was nice lol. I don’t know where my account was farming though.
This isnt a new thing btw. Back in 2010 i was comming back to rs. Logged into my account and had gotten from 70s in combat stats to 90s. 4k green dragon loots and green dragon bot gear. No ban though.

Double plot twist. People loan their accounts to be botted by someone else. Botter gets the GP, owner gets the xp/KC.
Triple Plot Twist - This actually happens to people's accounts all the time, and as someone who has personally been a victim, it's hella annoying to have to explain your sketchy-looking stats to in-game morons who are flipping you shit and won't believe the truth even if you told them... A long time ago this actually happened to me on RS3, my account was likely targeted because I had high dungeoneering, it got hacked when I took a break and used to farm frost dragons. When I came back to the game my account had way better stats including over 90 ranged (this was back when it made sense to use a cannon at frost dragons). A lot of my expensive items had been sold but actually I was kind of chuffed with the extra progress on my account.
I recovered an old account of mine and when I logged in it not only had membership but it was standing inside the room that banddos spawns at.
Sadly it had no pet but there was over 50 ml in the bank so I cleared it and put it on my main account 2 days later I looked at it again and it was back at Bandos again with the exact same gear so I made a hundred mil😂

Quit the game a while back and after a few years I decided to go back on and check the account. Found out it had been used for botting wyverns, and it had wyvern drops and supplies for about 40m worth in the bank, a lot more then what I had when I quit. Can't remember what combat level I was, but I went from around 90-100 to near max as well.

I've had my account for 16 years, long before there was email requirements and 2FA, and getting back into it a few years ago after forgetting my password was surprisingly way too easy. I filled out the recovery form, trying to give them as much information as I remembered about the account and got denied 3 times. The final time I filled out the form, I decided to just leave a majority of the recovery form blank and they pretty much instantly handed the account over to my new email address.
I have my email linked to it and 2FA enabled now, but a few weeks ago someone tried hijacking it through the recovery form and I'm worried it could be just as easy for someone else to hijack my account as it was for me get back into it.
Even though I only play casually a few times a year, I'd honestly hate to lose it and get it back after it was botted on. I put so much time into the account when I was much younger, but I never got any 99's, and it'd be disappointing to have someone else to steal my first 99 from me by botting on my account.

I had it happen to me with rs3. I had stopped playing for a while pre-eoc and my friend saw that I was logged in. Was able to recover the account. My bank was cleaned out although I had a million gp (never had that much before), runecrafting, fishing, and fletching were trained up, and I had membership on it.

My friend started out on osrs like two years ago, but he wasn't really into the grind. He got to like level 30, I remember because I bought him addy armor. A year later, he tries again. He had been hacked because I saw him online previously but he didnt care. He logs in, and his account is.. on tutorial island, completely reset.
Later, he gets hacked again and gets a free 55 crafting and like 1000 bowstring, which for a noob who hates grinding was a great way for him to get a slayer helm lmao

I saw what looked like another F2P bot farm in Lumbridge. Was switching worlds on my F2P alt account and noticed these accounts with full Adamant, a Rune Scimitar and a Power Amulet training on giant frogs near the Zanaris shack. I hopped between a few worlds and saw the same type of build on each of them.
Lowkey I want my account "hacked", trained, banned, and then recovered to find that I have 30,000+ zulrah kills with pets + 99 in all combat :)

I was hacked as a kid by my friends, but I think back in those days it was trivial to get ownership of other accounts. I had an attempted hack via Adobe (I presume, maybe Steam) data leak some 2 years ago, but my authenticator was still online so I could intercept it.
I no longer have similar passwords with the same email.
Also, two step verification saves accounts, if you can react.

There is literally programs for it. Watch crumbs video two days ago, he explains it decently. OSRS had a data breach. Its literally the developers shit game security they have.
Osrs didnt have a data breach. Other websites have data breaches, and those get used to find out your runescape password. The best way to avoid being hacked is to use 2FA, Have a bank pin, Use unique passwords for every single account you have anywhere on the internet, and have a secure email and backup email.
At somepoint in 2016 I was hacked on my pure account. Didn't use as when i completed DT just starting doing an ironman or my main. It was like 60 range, 50 mage, 30 str...etc. Well long story short, came back to it maybe 8 months later, it was hacked. Recovered it at castlewars with quests done and with 35k+ blue d'hides, and 30k+ d bones, and tons of there various loot. Also, roughly 15k+ green d'hides. 99 range, 99hp, and like 8m worth of gear. Was the greatest day of my runescape life because I just expected to come back to a ruined pure, I had already cleaned the bank out.
I once got hacked and my account was trained to be a red chin and puro puro bot my hunter went from 1 to somewhere in the 70s. I used that to maintain bonds back when they were 2.3-2.6 mil.
They need to rollback these accounts when they unban for macroing... it makes the highscores rather illegitimate.
The highscores are entirely illegitimate. You can be assured most top scores are either bots, shared accounts or Venezuelan farmers.
Truth is i doubt most of the top players play legit regardless. Highscores have meant nothing to me for many years now *shrugs*

this happened to me about a week ago when my gf had called me asking if i was playing OSRS and i said no so i checked it out and got my account back but didnt think anything of it , i decided to try out OSRS after finding your youtube today and i found about 725 steel bars, ammo moulder, and about 705 bars standing in front of a furnace with 70 in smithing and some quests ive never touched donewhen i logged in, as well as the simple stuff in the bank and about 118k gold in the bank so it was interesting
I actually had this issue. I took a several year long break on runescape. The email to the account was different and from the original and I was able to recover my account and got it back. On the RS3 side it still had everything it had before I quit. Including over 1mil in gold, but on the OSRS side I was level 3 with 83 fishing and over 5mil in lobster. Talk about one hell of a head start on OSRS lol.
I had the green dragon happen to me. Stopped playing for bit with 30s on main combat skills, came back to low 80s.
i had this happen too, my account was used on rs3 for slayer? i was at gargoyles when i logged back in. my attack went from 93 to 99, my slayer went from ~21 to ~80 and my hp was 99 too
I played on that acc mostly f2p so most of my members stats were really low. it was crazy to see m slayer was among my top 5 highest stats all of a sudden!
Ahh that explains my 20m ranged exp and exact gear setup and addy bars as the guy at 7:20
My bank didn't get cleaned though, I still had about 4m lying around in random items, and 2m in addy bars.
Came back to the game recently and hopped onto the low level account I had played briefly to find that I had 80+ crafting (I have never crafted anything in my life) and it was clearly being used as a flax spinning bot. It was never banned, had a few hundred thousand worth of materials on it and a high amount of GE transactions. I never share my info anywhere, but I am assuming that my account was hacked because the client I used was OSBuddy, which pretty much explains everything.
Got mine back at green dragons, few hundred bones & hide. Only a few levels of attack were gained though. Happy to have my account back though
I had a low-level account which I didn't play on for a little over 2 weeks because I was on a holiday. I came back from holiday and wanted to log in to my account to get the notification that the account was in use. After a recovery process I log in to the account and suddenly I had 72 crafting (I had lvl 1 crafting originally) and 2 mil worth of flax and bow strings in the bank. Also, whoever hacked me had activated a bond for my account (my membership ran out when I left on holiday). So I gained 70+ crafting levels, 2 mil GP and 2 weeks of membership from being hacked. Needless to say, I wasn't exactly upset about it.
This happened to my main on RS3. I recovered my original account when I started playing OSRS. It was maxed, totally maxed. 120s, loads of boss KC, etc. I liquidated everything and swapped it for 350m OSRS cash.
Had created an Ironman years ago when it first began then completely forgot about it because I quit RS entirely around 2 years ago. Randomly decided to log in one day into my main account and type in my other accounts names through the clan chat.. seen that the Ironman was online and in the clan chat. I immediately recovered it to find that they had gotten 20ish mining to 93.
January 2020 i started playing osrs fully by making a new account as i previously had played before osrs was a thing. Back then it was just Runescape. So i leveled up the account and after a week or two of playing, i remembered that i actually had an osrs account, before i made my current main. I tried logging in and i found out it was banned for macroing. The account was made in like 2014 or 2015 and i just never played it after tutorial island i guess. I plead the case to Jagex saying, i havent been using the account (i know that doesnt matter to them, account remains banned usually) and they actually lifted the permanent ban, seeing as the offense happened almost 5 or 6 years ago and thought i was a reformed player and that i wouldnt do it again, giving me a second chance. I FINALLY login and open the stats tab and to my surprise i found out it had 99 fishing and almost nothing in the bank except for some fishing gear and big sharks. Someone hacked the account and made it into a fishing bot and got 99 fishing. Unreal.
This actually happened to me, I got 99 mage, 99 defence, and 99 hit points after 2 years inactivity
Something similar happened to me in the hayday of WoW. I went to one of those "free wow gold, input user and pass" websites. Quit a week later before anyone tried to log into my account.
About a year later I logged back in at it had clearly been used for mine/herb runes and I had an insane amount of gold. They also rolled back the inventory space to before the hacker cashed out so I had full stacks of ore in my bank and bag slots.
how do people get hacked? ive been playing runescape since 2005 and not once have i ever been hacked. do they go on dodgey websites or something? Or can someone just hack your account even if youve never been on dodgey rs sites/ ?

Lucky, exact same happened to me too. I had 99 Smithing with around 3m value of adamant bars. My account must have been used for Blast Furnace, however it sucks I lost all my Graceful gear...
A friend of mine made an account months ago, got past tutorial island and didn't pick it back up until I asked him to try it out and play with me. He logged in to see cannonball place holders and 72 smithing
This happened quite a while back, maybe 1-2 years, my roommate’s account was hacked and was banned for macroing. He didn’t play for a while so they had his account for a few weeks. Jagex let him recover and upon logging in it had gained ranged levels from about 80 to 96. There were a few blue dhides plus dbones in the bank. He didn’t really have anything of value so it was actually great being hacked.
Recently came back to the game after a few months of having a break. When I left I had 79 magic and 5m in the bank. After recovering my account I found that it's been turned into a zulrah bot with 2,955 kc, 93 magic and 35m. Not too bad considering my next goal was to prepare my account for zulrah so I can complete the hard diaries :P

I had this happen. Brought me up from around 45 mining to 80. Sold my set of zammy rune as well as cleared out my bank. When I got back in I had nothing but a bunch of adamant ore which I sold to get back my rune armor. I've thought about contacting Jagex to see if it's possible to set my level back down to 45.
My Rs3 account was hacked once, i had the old account protection system on it JAG. but at the time it only protected you in rs3 and not osrs. the hacker was unable to get into my rs3 character so they ended up using it to bot on osrs. about a week later when i realised what had happened i changed the password and when i checked the osrs character it had 45 mining (up from the 15 i had) and several thousand pure essence.
I just got my rs3 main account back and apparently I was a spiritual mage bot now with an additional 15m experience in all melee stats. Though I'm 3 years behind in the game now.
Thanks pugger, didnt know you could appeal ban so i left mine but i got my account back and ive got a zulrah pet but only acouple lvls
Not me. But a close friend.
He played OSRS briefly in 2013/2014 and pretty much only had trained melee and woodcutting.
In june 2018, he wanted to show his account, tried to log in, found out he was banned (unchanged password too, was a very complex one)
Ban date was 4-5 days before that, perma macro major.
We appealed the ban and logged in a day later, now he cleaned out his bank before all this (gave it to a friend) and found himself with free 73 magic and 3m worth of air orbs.
He simply said "what a nice welcome back bonus".
I haven't played in forever and when I tried to log back in I was banned for botting. I tried looking up my old name but there was only like two skills on my hiscores. I tried recovering the account but was told I didn't have enough proof it was my account. Anyone got any ideas to help?
EDIT: my name was changed too.
Once I was hacked and all my OSRS gp was gone, but I had more money than ever before in RS3. I gave it all away to strangers because I don't play RS3.
My brother got hacked around 2010 and his acc was used to bot red drags, but the skills were only at 80s when it was recovered
Hey SirPugger. I know you mostly do OSRS videos, but there has been an influx of bots on a German world on RS3 (I don't think it's related to that duping glitch a few weeks back). Any ideas?
A friend of mine who was brand new to the game was hacked, and his account was turned into one of those dicing/gambling bots you see at the GE. He eventually recovered the account and discovered 50M gp in his bank. Turns out the key to moneymaking in this game is to just let yourself get hacked...
I also recovered my noob alt account to find 86 hunter! E L L I S L on hiscores, I don't even think I had membership on the account at the time! This was way before twitch prime memberships too so it's pretty crazy to see.
My old RS3 main (the one from my childhood) was turned into an Aviansies bot. I logged in after recovering my account one day, and had 99 ranged, defense, and HP.
