  • Welcome back to the channel! Today I am up at the cabin for a solo overnight trip. I came up later in the evening so that I could get an early start tomorrow.
    In this video, I'll be moving and stacking the rest of the firewood for our sap boil in the spring. I will also finish the sap evaporator and add the remaining bags of sand.
    There were a few questions in the last video, about the difference in brightness of our solar lights vs our propane lanterns. Today ill do a comparison of both so you can see for yourself, how much brighter the solar lights are.
    Each trip up here is getting us a little bit closer to sap season, which is just around the corner! If you're new to the channel and have never seen our sap boiling video from last season, be sure to check out the Maple Syrup playlist!
    We hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

    We just found your site and I'm loving it. We are building off grid shed to home in Maine. We are at this point so much like you are but still love being there. We aren't living in it yet but will be. I do solo trips up too. I love this life.
    PS. People need to be nicer and stop the negative comments or just mind their own business. I give you credit to be do kind and explain to them this is how you live.
    Thanks again n I look forward to binge watching your videos today. ❤👍🏻

    You are such an amazing gal. You work so hard in everything that you do. You all deserve the fruits of your labor. Most of us have not been handed a lot in life and we know that we have to work hard to get and to maintain all that we have. Your last two videos have shown us more about you and your work ethic. Stay safe and God bless. Miss seeing those dobies.🤗

    I found your channel a week ago and love it. I went back to your first video and now i am caught up. I also live in Ontario, right now in Oshawa looking after my 88 year old parents. My house is 3 hours east of Oshawa in the country. Can't say i am a fan of the city but my parents need me.

    The gas lighting does help heat the place up. Run those first then switch over after you get up to temperature.

    see what I did there?😁 Get it? ...Gaslighting was soo 2020. Lame joke I know.

      Only when you first light it , as with most lanterns. Once the mantel catches completely and it’s burning steady, no flame is coming out the top.

    @rockytopoutdoors 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Just an FYI, I saw a blue flame coming out the top of your gas light. I have these same lights at my off grid camp and it usually means you need to replace the gasket near the mantle. If the mantle is brittle it’s time to replace it. A new mantle will make the light burn cleaner and brighter.

    • @living.different
      @living.different  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      We don’t use the lights anymore, which possibly is why it’s like that. I was just showing a comparison because people had asked 🙂

    I love the solar lights, I just bought some for my cabin and haven’t installed them yet. Do you leave your solar system on to charge while you’re not there or turn it off? I’m not sure if there is a potential fire hazard or is it acceptable to leave them on or what. Seems like if you use the system and the batteries aren’t topped off then it would be harmful to the batteries to leave them partially discharged especially in cold weather.

    • @living.different
      @living.different  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Our batteries never go below 50% , they stay charged enough with the sunlight we have here . We leave the system on so that there is power when we get there 💡

    Wouldn't something like a wheelbarrow make moving stuff around easier ?. Or is the manual labor intentional as exercise ?.

    • @living.different
      @living.different  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not sure what you mean? Carrying the sand bags? It’s a very short distance from the evaporator to the cabin

    • @rick-kx7gy
      @rick-kx7gy 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sand bags , fire wood , large multiples of anything to me could be transported in bulk easier with fewer trips . I agree that as short of a distance you moved those 3 bags of sand it was simpler to haul them by hand . I'm just one to be a huge believer in " work smart , not hard ". Wanting to see you freeing up more time for enjoying your fabulous cabin / property . Not criticize what you do .

      Amen to that. I have a question if not too personal . Noticed the long gun you left with the other day . Made me wonder if y'all carry a suitable caliber size handgun like in a chest rig for bear protection ?. Or has tyrant ( tampons in the mens room ) Trudeau made that a big no no ?.@@living.different

    • @living.different
      @living.different  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@rick-kx7gy we are not allowed to carry handguns for any reason here. In fact, the sale of handguns was just banned so we can’t purchase them even with a license. Semi automatic rifles and shotguns were also just recently banned. I brought the shot gun because I was alone and we do have bears etc .
