Building the Bridge to the Off Grid Cabin

  • It's been a long time coming. We stumbled upon the opportunity to purchase this off grid cabin in remote northern Maine. This will be a huge project to improve the road and renovate the cabin inside and out.
In July, just before I bought the cabin I was hospitalized and diagnosed with diverticulitis and an intestinal abscess. This infection made me lose weight and strength and I'm still slowly recovering.

I found that the dimond blades work better for cutting metal roofing less then 1/16 thick. Use a thin carbon stile black ""cut-off"" on heavy steel cut-off projects.

Came here to say this. I also think notching the log further would have been far easier/less frustrating.
Just an armchair quarterback sitting on a couch though; you’re the one out there and the one who got it done!

Such a loyal girl Gracie is and precious how you know just what she needs. The bridge is so important especially as more materials need to come for the cabin build. I know you'll make it just right and there for a long time to enjoy. I know you are, but please continue listening to your body as you've been doing. We appreciate all you're showing us and will keep you, Gracie and this project in our prayers Cory.

I am very thankful for the th-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO that has been a tremendous help to me in building a perfect outdoor shed. I have been facing many challenges and difficulties for a long time, but this plan has guided me to correct the mistakes during the process. I am impressed by the projects and I express my gratitude to the creator of this collection of plans.

Fundamental piece of work to enable so much more - the bridge was critical. As always, your approach in getting things 'just so' will pay dividends in the long run. More decking boards to increase he width of the tracks across will also strengthen the bridge - perhaps for a larger delivery truck for the cabin materials. Well done Cory - and lovely to see you rejoicing with Gracie as those metal cut-offs were made. Thanks again for sharing the projects with us.

  • @Slackware1995
    @Slackware1995 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I enjoyed your video.
    Some suggestions.
    1. Use saws-all with metal blade to cut the metal plate as much as possible, then switch to the angle grinder.
    2. Get a Harbor Freight 2000 watt inverter generator when it's on sale. Pay for the 2 year, no questions replacement warranty. It will be quiet and more fuel efficient than your truck. Plus powerful enough to charge the Jackery and several tool batteries at the same time and even run big power tools if needed.
    3. Get a couple of come-alongs. Harbor freight calls them "cable winch puller". Add a couple pulleys and a lift block and 50 foot cable. You'll be amazed by what you can do. You can also use 2 10 foot (or longer) poles to create an A frame to lift heavy loads.
    4. If you need to use ratchet straps like you did, use a pair of vice-grips on the handle to give you mechanical advantage by drastically increasing the length of the handle. This will also allows you to use stronger muscles than just your fingers.
    5. Buy knee pads. You wear gloves to protect your hands and boots to protect your feet. Knee pads are a cheap way to protect your knees.

Great channel. I haven't read all of the comments, but look into an inverter that wires into your trucks battery system and puts out 120v. Since your running your truck to charge the Jakerey only to have it run down its power, you can run the inverter and charge the batteries quicker.

Old wrought iron with rivets. You want an acetylene torch to cut that. No batteries or electricity required. With a torch you and burn off the rivets and peel the angle away with a large pry bar. It's a really nice piece of property.

As a carpenter and tradesman for the last 20 years, I'll give you a couple tips...
    *Always carry a telescoping magnet.
*Carry a hi-lift jack, they are invaluable.
*Don't use rapid battery chargers, they cut the life span of batteries in half. Just use a regular charger and buy extra batteries.
    *Get a come along
*Keep an extra car battery on you.
I have more tips, let me know if you want them.

But now you need to train that precious dog to stay back a ways. Things can go flying when you least expect it. The bridge is looking really good. Pace yourself! Great idea to remove that downed tree so it doesn’t block the bridge and cause flooding in the future and possibly ruin all the hard work you have put into the bridge. Stay safe and warm! See you at the next video.

Great job 👍🏻. Little tip: you can straighten a board by fastening a block to the subsurface and then making a wedge to pound between the block and the board. If that makes sense to you. Safer than having a strap snap and possibly causing serious inquiries. Bridge is awesome though! 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻

When you need to straighten the board out like that, your planks that you’re putting on the bridge, cut two wedges, secure, one wedge down close to the plank, take the other wedge and drive it in and it’ll move your board over a lot easier than using the straps.

I know they are expensive, but the 12 ah hight output battery is worth buying. The only thing you have to worry about is overheating the tool itself

Hello Cory and Gracie! I am so glad you have a new set of tools Cory!! I have been praying about them for you. 1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: Good job Cory on the bridge.

Looks good. I would definitely use those pieces you cut off and, you know me, I'd make a cross from them and hang it in the new build. But that's just me. Stay safe my Friend. 🙏🙏

The one thing I miss most about New England is the Fall colours...Canada is nice but nothing beats October/November in Connecticut
