The first time i saw them was with my dad at the SWEETWATERS music festival Xmas 1982/83 i was almost 13 also playing that weekend from memory TOOT'S AND THE MAYTELS... MIDNIGHT OIL.... THE CHURCH.... THE NETHER WORLD DANCING TOYS... THE SCREAMING MEE MEES.... THE PRETENDERS.... DD SMASH.....BLAM BLAM BLAM plus heaps more i can't remember off hand. The last time i saw them was at the bowl of Brooklyn in New Plymouth Aotearoa New Zealand around 1993/94
Split Enz sound so much better to me decades later than they did when I was just a kid, This seems like one of their milder videos back then. Most of the time they seemed to wear some freaky outifts and make up and their videos made me feel I was experiencing a horror moves as a little kid, Now I can listen to their songs from back then and appreciate them more without feeling frightened. They are not the type of music I seek out but when I come across their music on radio or here can really appreciate how unique and special they were. I'm sure they must have been best band ever from New Zealand.
"Australian?" grumblegrumble. Try the Enz's "Message to My Girl", "Strait Old Line", or "Six Months in a Leaky Boat", or one of their early art-prog tracks like "Walking Down a Road" or "Maybe".

Remember seeing this on Countdown ( Australia ) as the1st single from their new "Corroboree" album .. The previous album "True Colours" was massively successful here, with multiple hit singles, many other great tracks, and much critical acclaim .. On the strength of this song, I thought, "Wow, I think they're going to prove they can repeat the dose" .. And they did !

Personnel changes and Neil's emerging as a great songwriter too was changing the band; I, for one, liked their early screwball aesthetic, but it's hard to argue with their great pop songs later, and their best album was coming next. Eddie Rayner, again with some great work on keys. Great upload.
This is the first time i have heard this song. It's very good. I like the way the chords of unresolved giving it a slightly uneasy sound. This is halfway between Squeeze anf the Cure. The Cure's song the Forest applies this unresolved technique beautifully. You may wish to check it out. In the meantime i will be addind this Split Enz song to my playlist.

Nice new intro song. Reminded me of Kit Walker, especially from his Fire In The Lake album. Glad you enjoyed the track. How good are their melodies? You’ve done a great selection of their tunes. Of the ones you haven’t I think you’d most like Strait Old Line. Quirky but pop-mentality behind it and such great musicianship, lyricism, and songwriting on display. For some reason it reminded me that there’s a good deal of Mondo Rock’s greater works that you’re still yet to discover. No Time and Come Said The Boy are a couple of examples for when you get around to them.

I have been with a small time musician who toured a lot, that was hard, until I decided to come with, but I had to make myself useful and pay my way, otherwise, the others would get stroppy about having to leave their partners behind. I just cleaned up for them, did washing and dashed to the shops, nothing else 😅. Sometimes we would book a hotel room if the house they were in was too cramped. Turns out that he was a pain in the butt, didn't travel well, so the others were happy I took him away. 😝 Great band, they really take me back to the best parts of my teens. 💖
Brilliant song, band and reaction! It's Split Enz, ofc it's strange and bizzare or as you said, demented 😂 I Hope I Never is another darkish song by them, with Tim singing instead of Neil and is also brilliant. A very dark and less common song is Charley...one of my very favourite Enz songs!

In Australia by this time, we stopped seeing Split Enz as that weird band from New Zealand and began seeing them as our own home grown act. This song is part of my eary 80's life soundtrack. Most of my friends had Split Enz pins and posters and were big fans. My sister and I half-heartedly chased Neil Finn when we spotted him in the Melbourne CBD, but stopped ourselves because we realised we had been seeing Split Enz in the Countdown studio for about four years at this point, and already had a few of Neil's autographs. Why are we acting like crazed fans now? I also touched Tim Finn's hand while he was hosting Countdown. Ha, ha... Speaking of which, why haven't you guys come around to doing a comparison of Split Enz and Jo Kennedy's take on ''Body And Soul''? I'm easy to spot in the Countdown clip. 🐕

In the end due to his ongoing indecision, it held him back and the girl started to move away from him, meaning that she was probably going to end the relationship. It does have a catchy happy sound to it despite the lyrics.
About this time 1980 1981 I think Neil was engaged? Certainly in this song and “I got you” you can hear the uncertainty and worries about his new relationship. And the fact that Split Enz was finally starting to have success now. After years of disappointment in England. So he might have been worried the band might damage his marriage? Just a theory.
Great band. This song is kinda straight for these guys. Their earlier videos were more artsy, kinda theatrical, and manic! Please, try some of Tom Finn's dolo stuff, Fraction Too Much Friction (which was huge here in Oz) Through The Years, Staring At The Embers and my fave, Made My Day, with is bkoody uplifting!
Singer Neil Finn, great! Listen to him in "Crowded House" he was the singer of that group that came after Split Enz. They were fantastic you will love them!
Oh well here goes, I don't know anything about split ends, and tbh IMO this hasn't inspired me to look them up, I'm sure I recognised the voice, and there was something familiar about the song, but not for me 🏴✌️
Maybe don't give up on them completely just yet, James! This is one of their rather soft songs, so you may enjoy other Split Enz songs more, including some of C&C's previous reactions 🙂

I think you'll find if you dig deeper into Crowded House as well, that there is often a subtle sinister element to many of their songs.
