    I've been tinkering with electronics for many years and always disassemble broken things. I never knew that something so complicated could be stripped down so thoroughly and successfully repaired and work like new. I learned so many things, like taking apart a relay and cleaning the contacts. I have a cheap GRACE TAPE2USB II that won't play and when I looked inside didn't find anything obviously. Now I'm ready to go back in and take another look.
    I'm subscribing and I look forward to watching more episodes. (Oh by gosh, 233 prior to this one)

    Your tip about the flashlight for finding small parts can be aided with the tip to put your eyes on the same level as the flashlight, so get your head flat on the ground.
    And... I have learned over the years, when some part jumps, like a spring or a knob, FREEZE. Do not blink your eyes, do not turn your head, and keep exactly looking where your eyes were when it jumped. That way your ears and eyes have the best chance to observe where it lands.

    Amazing Video. I just bought a HK400xm and looks like a lot of the same parts, So this Video will help to redo mine,
    Mine worked for about a 10 minutes.
    I wiggle the connector CN55 (worked , then did not work)
    I found a some hair line cracks (Connector to solder traces) w the CN55 connector for Motor and Sol's The connector was loose and wiggled which caused it. I glues the socket in and I had to fix it be install jumpers from the socket to the traces or component but I did 2- first and then it worked than the brake did not work and added another jumpers (ended up almost all of them)
    Also had to temporarily replace the caption motor The original which kept turning off and was running at slow speeds , I took it apart and cleaned it then put it back together and than it had one speed to "FAST" (will have to fix it w new parts later)
    Thanks for the TIRE Information 2x-8mmx1.5mmx1.5mm and 1x-9mmx1.5mm x1.5mm I looked online and there's no information about it and some bad hacks.

    For cleaning, i use crc brake clean. Works great. Wear gloves and be carefull with what it's applied to. Good for metal components.

    Lovely job, Trevor. But, I hope you don't mind me mentioning that I noticed there was a lot of side to side movement with that pinch-wheel. I don't think it's the correct one, the way it is; the wow and flutter will be terrible and it will damage the tapes by pulling them to one side. New wheels are available for this model, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing.

      I did suspect the pinch roller when I did the azimuth alignment. It was original roller

    I take small parts like the brass washers and put them in 99% ipa and just like you put it in a bottle and throw the bottle in the ultrasonic cleaner. The waves pass through the bottle. I do the same thing with carburetor jets in carb clean. Dr. CASSETTE, recommends ammonia based window clean for pinch rollers and belt cleaning as it is safer / easier on the rubber and prevents it from drying out.

      I've heard of the same trick with gasoline inside of a plastic peanut butter jar. The US passes right through the jar and gasoline is reported to be the best solvent one could use in a US cleaner

    Great job Trevor!
    If you are interested in getting calibration tapes, I recommend GennLab tapes. They have a variety of reproduction tapes including TEAC tapes and they ship to Canada. I have a bunch of them and they seem to be very good quality.
    One tip that I suggest is to replace the tape chamber lamp while you have that entire assembly apart. I realize that the lamp was working but when you consider the number of hours on it, it is cheap insurance to replace it at that time.

    • @Veedthetg
      @Veedthetg 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Could you make your own by recording a tone from an app?

    • @tonec3663
      @tonec3663 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Veedthetg You can record an accurate tone from an app but the problem will be that you still won't be able to tell if your machine is playing it properly. For example, if you are checking the tape speed and the tone is set to 333Hz and you monitor it with a frequency counter at 333Hz, it can look like it is good. If you then move the tape to another machine and play it back, what if the results are off? Then there would be confusion about which machine is not accurate (perhaps both). At this point you would lose your point of reference because now there is a measurable difference and you have not proved that the first machine was running at the correct speed. Now imagine this again for other tests: azimuth, frequency response, etc.
      The professional calibration tapes are made on special equipment in laboratories and meet certain standards. They are expensive but are invaluable if you are repairing/restoring multiple tape decks or reel-to-reel tape machines.

    Wow, 1980!, and I thought it was more modern! Still the ICs have helped to remove a lot of excessive ccts and wires. It's a game swings and roundabouts - easier to work on, but are some of the ICs proprietary? That can be a problem.

One question though, are you accepting repairs from outside your country Canada? If not why not. I live here in the states the country below you...lol.😊

    Another fine video. I have a question about one of your prior repairs. The Yamaha CA-1010. I have a 2010 that sometimes makes a loud obnoxious screech. Do you think it could be the preamp coupling switch on the back?

    • @TrevorsBench
      @TrevorsBench  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Noises like that are usually feedback of some form. Dirty, flaky switches typically cut the signal in one channel or another and do not feedback. Possibly a internal problem with the tone circuits but it's really difficult to predict what's wrong without testing

    I'm not commenting on this particular deck, but some decks are designed, produced, and out to sell only - litte thought gone into serviceability. These are a bit of a nightmare.

      “Too” would be the correct spelling and grammar. Example: Your childish harassment has gone on TOO long. Your list of personal hang-ups is TOO long to comprehend. Life is too short to waste time on malcontents. Thinking of how lonely and dejected you are is too depressing.

      What did you expect for a full cassette deck service, 5 minute video? There's a lot of moving parts and things that can go wrong in cassette decks... These longer videos are also a valuable resource for those looking to learn how to service things like the mechanism etc. If you don't like the length of a video, don't watch it! Nobody is forcing you.
