Trevor I think the reason those wires are numbered could be Harman Kardon may have assembled a few of their Heath Kits to rebadged it as a Harman Kardon could have been short on parts for the main run of these during line assemblies and just used the kit parts. Just a guess..
I always thought Quadraphonic stuff was a huge failer for its time. They dont even make Quadraphonic anymore that I know of. And from what I have seen there really is not alot of stuff out there in albums or good albums anyways. I only know of a few 70s stuff that I have found threw stores. And this stuff was not cheap back them for a mid person to even buy this stuff or the albums to as they were not cheap to than a normal album cost. Great work on the receiver tho that was alot of stuff in that one for sure wow. Not a fan of the face of it tho.
What a parts beast!!! Good job! You mentioned it's 50 years old. What about the power supply main caps?
Thanks for sharing 2024. Hope to see more projects soon.
Happy New Year Trev. Been around for a few years now. That thing is so old it could have been operated on several times. I had a pristine 730 last month. The lid had never been removed. Always a gamble. I'm finished with gear now. Moving on for 2025. I have saved enough gear for 10 lifetimes. Going back to motorcycles.
Thanks for the information on this. Gonna save this for whenever i get enough motivation to re-cap my grandfather's. Fortunately it works. So all i really need to do is replace old caps. But that still looks incredibly complex.
I have one that's broken
Always enjoy your videos Trevor. I too would enjoy seeing how you put together an audio dummy load. I've discovered that as soon as you move beyond just tacking a resistor across the speaker terminals, things can get pretty tricky, especially with respect to managing the "ground". I'd love to see your thought process on it. Thanks for the great content! - JRH
Another episode of the Get Grey Hair Audio Conditioning Studio ✌️🐻
Sucks that the lights on the radio meter are tied to an input, just like Sansui receivers... lame
Some people (like me) prefer that the dial and meter lights are switched; others prefer that they stay on. Rewiring them so that they stay on is easy. I have done it a couple of times. If the selector switch has an unused pole, lights that stay on can be made to go off. I have done that twice so far and will eventually do it on more stuff.
One of these days ill get this treatment done on mine. Wish I still had the wood cabinet
You spent more time fixing it than they spent building it.
Faultfinding on that monstrosity must be a nightmare. Will never complain again when I have to fix equipment again, not after I have seen what this nigtmare looks inside!!!! Another wild thing is that they use that slide switch to switch the outputs of the amp into bridge mode. Hopefully the contacts in that switch are beefier than what you find in most of those switches. The price of your repair must’ve been insane, and I guess the original price of that thing must make those silly $30000 pre-amps look cheap.
Enjoyed thank you
2:24:08 you forgot to solder the tiny capacitor to the blue bar (grey cables) all the way on the right.
That thing has the most components I’ve ever seen in my life - insane.
I have my grandfather's. I was gonna re-cap it. It still works and I lost motivation after counting them all. Lol
Boy, that thing looks intimidating...the CD4 board looks like dense, miniature forest of components. 😲
I have one of these. I guess I need to watch and learn as mine is not working.
Arcing in the power switch would blow a fuse!
I know this is a new comment on one of your old videos, but when I first saw this thing, it was dirty and didn’t sound very good now it is beautiful and sounds much better. Not everybody wants 100 V per channel for their stereo. Most people can’t use it anyway these are still sought after and I’m sure by now you sold it years ago.
Where did you learn to open a box you are dangerous with a knife you buy a cheap Amplifier Kit from China and complain the whole time about the cheap components what did you expect to get 😂
To make entertainment for people like you?
Never any interest in these build kits or buying 1 already built, however.................enjoyed watch this video, go figure. 1st time seeing someone do a ribbon cable, quite interesting. Chinese, so there will be functional obsolesces and lots of distortion.
Trevor your videos are never boring. You're right it is a good way to kill some time when it's cold outside. Thanks for another great vid!! Hope your Christmas was Wonderful!
Trevor, Loved the video! FYI, the SU-V707 was available in the USA as a 110V unit. I bought one a couple years ago. Most Technics components were available worldwide. There’s usually a code on the unit to indicate the market. Many components were also available with switchable power supplies for various 100v, 110v, and 220v.
The last Heathkit I remember building was an AM/FM clock radio with a fluorescent vacuum tube display clock radio; I say fluorescent because it required a higher voltage than typical 7-segment LED displays in the early to mid-80s. Used it till it did not survive a move to another home.
One chip ridding another. That's the best I seen 😜😜😀
thats what i need is a multiplex signal generator . sg165 is getting very expensive and they are at the age where they need some sort of repair/restoration i dont know what else to get
Another great vid Trevor! I almost peed myself when you were pulling that fuse checking the bias, it reminded me of that old operation game we used to play as kids bzzzzz.
I like to see how you build the audio dummy load. I enjoy all of your videos, whether they are long or short.
An excellent video. I wasn't expecting you to reverse engineer that heap of overpriced junk but I'm new here via a post on Audio Science Review. I really enjoy your style. 😀
$25k for this piece of sh*t? It's the stuff of nightmares! 😂
Pessimo progetto ,mettere le schede una sopra l altra è una pessima idea, creano solo caos e confusione , sembra assemblato da un bambino di 5 anni , io licenzierei subito chi ha fatto lo schema elettrico, questa è spazzatura.
What frequency are you planning on feeding into the stereo generator? They usually generate their own 38 and 19KHz and all you need is audio ...what evil plan do you have in mind ? ;)
I've recently started buying SMD kits. Nine times out of ten, they don't amount to much. But it allows me to get proficient with tiny surface parts and like you, If it doesn't work you have a board to diagnose the issue. I get a great sense of achievement doing that. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Building kits is so therapeutic especially when they work . being from Australia i would like to mention Silicon Chip magazine its great .You can get it in paper format or digital. cheers
Grate video Trevor I have built menny Vellmon kits one of which is a headphone Amplifier for my computer it allows me to use standard speakers on my computer its only 10wats but sounds grate. The other one was a cube with LEDS. Meary Christmas to you and your family and please do more kit builds
Way, way back as a youth, I built a Radio Shack/Archer "Electronic Reverb" from a kit. That's when I learned to solder. Fun times. Thanks for the Christmas content, Trevor!
Onkyo A-8850 is the exactly same model, SM is commonly available in Elektrotanya f.e. 🫠 there you can get one bipolar cap instead of 2 electrolytes in series behind 2 opamps on mainboard, if you replace them by high quality types, then you will hear fantastic sound. Great amplifier :)))
Kits are fun. I built several Heathkits in my teens. My first audio kit was a Hafler DH220, used that for many years. I recently built a Velleman UV meter, and that works great. Most recent kit is a chineese transistor curve tracer. Xraytony had one that he modified for higher output, and switching to compare two transistors. So I followed his instructions. I t works great for what it cost to build. The fun is modifying to make them better. So yeah, more kit builds would be great to watch. Have a Merry, and a great NEW YEAR!.
I quite like the XR2206. Managed to find some on UncleAli that will work up to the datasheet DCV and I can get them up to 3MHz. Granted the stability is hardly crystal stable at that frequency, still not bad considering it far exceeds the datasheet. Made a very handy battery power Audio Generator with a 1 Watt amp chip. Line level Hi impedance out and Low impedance out for testing speakers. Didn't use the kits, made my own boards.
Hey, what kind of vice is that? It’s perfect! Merry Christmas!
The quality of that generator is so bad that is unusable in practice.
Trevor, all your videos are good. I learn a lot with you.
Merry Christmas, Trevor. Yes please, more kits!
Kits are always fun especially when you can improve their design to make them better ! I remember the old Radio Shack kits, I bought a few bare boards and tried scavenging parts from broken TV's and radios etc but always had to go back to the shop to buy the bits I couldn't find for free ! I've built a few Velleman kits too, they were really useful when I was in bands and helping out repairing P.A. systems. Often the units were so badly abused that I would have to replace the innards and using Velleman kits was an economical option. They had a very wide range in the UK and were fairly good quality if assembled right.
I also build kits when the weather is nice. 😉
Thank you. Merry Christmas to you. Please do some more of these..
In this case the fourth band is the multiplier, and brown-black-black-black says the multiplier is zero. 10 to the power of zero is 1, so forget the multiplier, it is one-zero-zero = 100. But I get you, I buy 1000 resistors and grab my hairs when I try to read them too. For me it is the blue background colour that distorts the band colours. Most problems between green, blue and purple, they should be more saturated, also because colourful parts are attractive and inspiring. And they should use a light blue as background for the metal film's, like they use the light brown for the carbon's background. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas We want to see
It took me a few years and I learned the color codes for resistors. And then these new small components in blue background with pale colors make it impossible to decipher the colors. Red is close to orange and blue matches black. Thankfully we have testers and multi-meters to quickly identify them. Merry Christmas.
