  • I know I had a brief walk around Shoreham Fort recently, but I went back to meet, Gary Baines, the chairman of the charity that is dedicated to restore and protect the fort.
Gary took me inside the the famous tunnel, to inspect the canon he keeps down there and gave me a better understanding of the fort's history and the plans for the future.

In the 1850’s, when French intentions caused apprehension, it was then decided to man and defend the harbour mouth with a permanent fort. The newly constructed harbour entrance, as it was then, was selected as the site for Shoreham Fort - just on the wide shingle spit immediately to the west. This was so that the guns could defend and command the harbour entrance, its approaches and the beach.

Lovely surprise no idea it had been taken in hand and restored. Was there twenty years plus ago and was very sad to see how sorry it all looked. Just great

Superb. Being a bit of a military history 'buff' nice to see these important relics being restored and not forgotten. Thankyou Bald Explorer ! :)

Great video, have you ever been to Newhaven fort? That's really interesting over there

I haven't. I haven't even been to Newhaven, but I aim to rectify that. I hope to cover a few more forts actually, now I have this one as a demo of what I can do.

Very interesting again. Must have taken a long time for local labourers to build that fort. How long did it take to build?

I am not sure Ian. I think a couple of years.

Ian The fort was a prototype to all the Palmerston Forts and so had to be built quickly. The fort therefore was built in only 6 months 😳

Lived in Shoreham in the 50's and knew of it but not "open" to the public then.
