    I really enjoy watching your videos-you’re a great teacher and even though I normally like plain, unpainted pieces of furniture, I’m really beginning to like the paint, especially they way you do it. Question: about how long does it take you to do a piece? Like this one, for instance - if you start working on it first thing in the morning, is it done by night or does all the drying time between coats make it go over several days? Thanks for al the great information!

    it's so pretty! Did you switch and use your festool on the top or bottom? it seems like it would go so much faster on the top, but yes, blow through veneer, too. I cant decide on a sander. I'm leaning towards the surf prep then just use stripper on super thick jobs that the festool would grind through quickly. thanks for another great video!

    I'm super curious about your sander. Im a Festool Fan. I see you have their dust extractor. So i'm curious why you chose the sander you have over theirs? I've had my eye on theirs for a while and it's going to be my next tool purchase. I like what I see when you use yours. I do furniture refinishing as well as building. A new sander moved up on my list as I've been having some tendinitis in my elbow and because i need better dust collection for my sander. So something light weight, good for furniture and building, good dust collection, and able to do contoured edges easily.

    You give excellent directions. There really doesn’t seem to be much difference between the top and bottom shelf with the entire piece. What other way could you show more contrast? I thoroughly enjoy all of your posts.

    Ohhh, i am doing a similar project right now, solid oak. It is still bleeding after all the sanding! I am going to bleach it. I hope i can cover it with white and grays without the red coming back up, i am worried

      @diys-by-dar. I just did a small oak side table with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, PURE, a crisp pretty white. Before I applied the chalk paint after cleaning and scuff sanding to get rid of shine, I primed with a Zinsser BIN Shellac Based Primer I buy at the Home Depot. It comes in a spray paint or quart cans that you can roll onto your walls or wood furniture. One good coat kept the oak from bleeding through. I let the primer dry for a good 24 hours. The chalk paint went on real nice. No bleed through after one coat of primer and one coat of AS chalk paint. I would recommend you try it on a small area of your project and see if it will perform for you as well as it did for me.

      @@annodnostaw9971 thanks for the help, i have at least 40 hours of sanding into it, so scared to mess it up! I bought zinzer brand bleach, if it still stays bleeding red, its oak, i think what you suggested might be my only option left.

    I just did a white wash on drawer dresser but I put on a polyurethane coat and I saw the white wash go away a bit and had to sand it and go over with my white wash; looked nice and went over with another coat of poly but it did the same of making the finish more transparent and the wood color come up a bit. What would you recommend? Thanks!!!

    Hi Christina this is Mary Pace I haven’t written in a while for many reasons. I was watching your video on my TV today the one that showed your 10 favorite makeovers. This table was one of them. I have a question about the white wash on the top and the shelf. I did an old Jacobian buffet. I stripped the top all the way down to bear wood. It had the most beautiful grain that I’ve ever seen. I felt it was such a shame to cover it up with paint, so I decided to do a white wash. I used Dixie Belle‘s warm white. I watered it down half-and-half and I used a lot of water when I was wiping it back because I really wanted that grain to come through. Then I finish the piece. And after it was complete and dried for a few days my heart sank and I started to cry I could not believe what I was seeing. There was about five orange spots on the top of the buffet. I put a lot of work into this Buffet but mostly a lot of love. So when I saw the bleedthrough it broke my heart. And I did not know what to do. I knew I needed to use shellac so I sprayed the top with two or three coats of shellac. I sanded it down and then I added another very late then coat of my white paint added water and wiped it back but it just didn’t look good. So I bit the bullet and I sanded it down enough to grip paint and painted it completely with Dixie Belle’s white sands silk paint. I think about three or four coats. I’m sorry that I had to go around the corner to cross the street “ as my mother would say” before I asked you my question! Lol. My question is when you have a piece that is a bleeder and you want to white wash the top, what can you put on the top that is clear so when you put the wash on the grain will show through? You can go to my Facebook marketplace page “Painted up Fancy by Mary Pace” and see the finished piece.

    How’d you know the veneer was too thin on the sides? Still try to learn here. I’m so afraid of veneer. AH!

    • @moniquebrown18
      @moniquebrown18 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She punched through the veneer as soon as she started to sand the edge. You can see it where she started to sand. Veneer stinks....you need a 120 grit to get the finish off ( instead of an 80 grit u can use on solid wood) but too high (220 grit) and it will take too long and not get an even surface. If u r painting the piece, no big deal...just scuff surface with a 220. If u want the natural wood then have to go SLOW and LIGHT with sanding. Also pick a smoother piece with light wood grain because u have to sand deeper to get finish off wood grain and if they r deep then u have to get too close to punching through. Don’t be afraid...if u punch through u can use a wood filler and just paint over. Good luck!

    • @amandaweinraub2662
      @amandaweinraub2662 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@moniquebrown18 Thank you so much. I hate veneer too. I am so nervous about punching through it. So 120 grit for veneer. Thanks. I’ll try that.

    • @ChristinaMuscari
      @ChristinaMuscari  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometime the edges of a top are just straight up particle board like here. I could tell there wasn't any wood there that would stain. Wouldn't have mattered what sandpaper I used. Monique has some good points about sanding veneer.

    Just remember, people: If you have a real antique and you strip off the original finish, you have immediately ruined any and all chances of getting the actual value of the antique. Stripping off the original finish immediately depreciates the piece.

    How often would you need to re-wax with Jolie wax? I feel bad waxing instead of top coating pieces I want to sell since I know most won't redo it which will leave the piece more vulnerable. Do you have a way of combating that on pieces you sell?

  •  ปีที่แล้ว

    I kinda like the discreet pattern on the top of the “before” piece… it’s a shame it almost disappears on the “after” piece (or so it seems on the video).
    And I’m not a fan of these neutral colors, but that’s just a personal preference.

    Is that a vintage or antique table? If so, why wouldn't you restore it to it's former beauty (it still looks pretty good) rather than paint it? It's your table so you can do what you want but to me that's a ruined table.

  • @ericas9311

    I tried to do the paint stain with the same paint and did half water as well and it did not work 😭😭 the piece wasn’t real wood so I don’t know if that had something to do with it but the paint stuck in some areas more than others and I had to do the paint stain like 5 times because it would all just wipe right off. After doing it a few times the paint was more obvious in certain areas so I just had to give up and paint it all one color. So sad 😭

    Now that you’ve has this piece for a while, was there any bleed through on the areas you did not sand down? It is such a dark color to begin with I would have been tempted to prime it despite the paints claiming no priming necessary. Any bleed through over time? (Are the paint claims true regarding not having to prime?!)

    Very pretty. Have you used Jolie Varnish to finish off a project? I used Jolie Rouge paint on two side tables and a coffee table. I was going to use DB Gator Hide to seal the tops, boy am I glad that I tried it out on a piece of scrap wood first. It took a lot of paint off as I lightly spread it on the wood. The word "varnish" scares me a bit, I have to admit. Now I don't know what to finish these off with, the coffee table will get hard use by a family of four including two teens. Any suggestions? Thank you

    What a fabulous piece! I think you should keep it (I know, you didn't ask my opinion, but there it is). I also like how you decided to keep some of the old varnish on that bottom shelf. You're right! It did add some character to the piece. I'm one of those who is trying to let go of "perfection" and to embrace "character" in my life. I spent way too much time being fretting over the so called imperfections I see. I also would like to know how you knew the veneer was too thin? I enjoy learning from you.

    Does this wax need to be reapplied every so often? I love watching you. I tried furniture flipping about 10-15 years ago. Back then I didn't have folks like you and FB marketplace to buy and sell. I really want to try this again with these new paints you all are using. I used a brand called Faux Effects. I took many expensive classes and bought many expensive products and it never really took off for me. Now my husband is reluctant to let me try this again. I am going in VERY early in the morning for my FORTH surgery on my knees. I have had 2 arthoscopies and another tomorrow as well as a partial knee replacement on my left one. So when I see you standing on your knees on concrete floors I cringe every time. Please put pads on or use a garden cushion under your knees. I am hoping I can walk without pain after this surgery, but I will need a replacement on this one eventaully too. Don't take your knees for granted, The inside of the knee caps can only stand so much.

      I am definitely not a pro at refinishing, but have used wax quite a bit. I have a cabinet in my room that I store fabric in and my cats love to sit in top of and look out the window. Refinished it in 2012, used wax and it’s still going strong!
      I also had stripped down the cupboard doors to bare wood in 2012 (house built in 1954, gold bought it in 56 many, many layers of paint!) I painted them does a glaze wash over them, then finished with wax. I am currently remodeling my kitchen ands when I redid the doors this time, there was no paint wear around the knobs at all. It was also really easy to wipe down to maintain. Granted, my kids are now adults, but do live on a small farm, so definitely some dirt and grime.
      With both of those examples, I have not replied wax or had to do any repairs.
      Hope this helps
