I understand WHY Bobby decided to follow his father's orders. Kids who grow up in those kinds of environments often want the abusive parents approval as much as they hate them and sometimes when they have a chance for that validation they will do whatever they're told. But how he did it, that lost me.

    • @bobtheball5384
      @bobtheball5384 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +548

Yeah- if he'd just pushed her and maybe used her body as a shield I'd be like, "Yeah okay that's fair, wanting validation and being in fear." since I can relate to wanting approval from abusive parents, I can understand that even if killing her was extreme- but the stabbing and skateboarding shit is too ridiculous and such a switch up that I cannot take it as seriously 💀

    • @pawpawmariachi
      @pawpawmariachi 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +71

iirc when I read it I also saw it as like, he didn't want to follow the plan/orders of the kid he looked down on because he both wanted to feel like he's in control and because he was subconsciously scared of putting his life in the hands of the plans of someone who he's been bullying, since he knows the kinds of things he thinks about his own bully (his dad). he was probably already thinking about it, but wouldn't've followed through if he didn't get encouraged by his dad and if the situation wasn't so tense. so he skateboarded her down in order to solve the trap on his own terms, in a way that felt safer to him because it was a plan he personally came up with. and then after that he realised the other kids would be antagonistic towards him, making the dangerous situation even more dangerous, and kids like bobby act more violent the more scared they are, so it felt realistic to me.
if he had made it back out alive into normal society I could see him getting overwhelmed with guilt and going insane, but he didn't survive long enough for the severity of what he did to hit him, so he just seemed to become a cartoon villain and die

@@bobtheball5384 idk I thought even that was pretty believable/predictable, if he was gonna use her as a skateboard to block the saw blades she'd need to be dead or dying first or else she'd resist and he already knows how to skateboard so he's sticking with something he knows how to do, I didnt think it was all that absurd tbh

Some where poo was a forfeit or hazard, while others with poo collection/play was the objection or prize. I think this stems from some kind of paedophilic queering of children. You know what would have been badass?
If Bobby, after his dad goes all "dewit!" at him, as a final knee-jerk act of defiance puts Sadie on his shoulders and slides down himself, saws be damned!
Heck, going in feet first and body at a 90° angle, after the fate of his entire nether regions are described in gory ridiculous detail he might even have time enough to tell his siblings goodbye and give a single fuck you to his dad before he ultimately bleeds to death.
Or maybe not, maybe he totally regrets his decision right away because it truly was a knee-jerk reaction on his part, being too busy doing exactly the opposite to what his dad wanted to rly think about the self destructive consequences.
either way it still would've been badass and a way better character moment for Bobby imo
you could also make it a ruined badass moment by having his plan fail bc he can't balance Sadie on his
shoulders properly and they both fukken die, would've meant the dad still fucked shit up by triggering his son's impulsive streak, and making the deaths feel even more tragic and pointless than they already were

Tbh youre right. As cool as it was to have a chsracter literally be used as a skateboard for a death or an instance of extreme problem-solving, it wouldve been way cooler to have the underdog of one of the families make a heroic sacrifice for one of the younger kids. And itd be pretty damn clever to have his attempt at getting down safely *fail* because itd be a bit of irony. Like, in his final attempt to do something that would make his dad proud of him or to be seen as useful to at lesst someone he fails miserably because he couldn't save Sadie or himself, so now people are reasonably even more upset. Ten credits if in response to Bobby dying the father scoffs and mocks both Sadie *and* his now very dead son.
Though that could be considered too... not edgy? To want the kids to work together? Or a heroic sacrifice? I was really rooting for Bobby during the first retelling review thing. Him and the little boy i was rooting for them

Here's what I'd have done: as soon as Bobby reaches the bottom of the slide, I'd have had the nerdy kid lash out at him and shove him as hard as he can. Sure, he's smaller, but then again, there's the element of surprise. Since he's not expecting it, Bobby loses his balance and falls back onto the slide just in time to get torn apart by the saws, showering all the other kids with blood.

I think the purpose of the cows was to blast the kids with cow bits to force them to lose their balance, The trap would have been to easy other wise I guess remember the only kid who gets killed in that trap gets blasted by cow bits and falls into the grinders

In defense of Bobby's Pro Skater moment, Greg didn't just say "push her", he was wayyy more manipulative. For context, this happens very shortly after the death of Kip (Bobby's favorite sibling), who fell into a meat grinder right in front of everyone. Bobby is already in a bad place mentally, so when his dad says "Maybe I was wrong, maybe your skating could be useful, if only you could find something to ride down the slide on. Don't disappoint me" I 100% buy Bobby doing what he did. The execution of the scene absolutely could've been better- the whole human skateboard thing is absolutely ridiculous even in context- but I don't hate it from a character standpoint.

This book was my first splatterpunk read, and it really goes hard at points. By the time I got to the buzz saw slide scene, I was feeling kind of desensitized to the gore aspect... then I turned the page to *that* illustration like a goddamn jumpscare. I was right back into the horror at the point, and I have to expand a little on Bobby's heel-turn moment.
*disclaimer: it's still pretty hyper escalating*
Bobby in the early family scenes doesn't so much hate his father as is jealous of his siblings for taking the attention, and not fully understanding why his father doesn't understand his enjoyment of skating. He's described as skilled at the hobby and potentially having a future in it, but his dad doesn't see past pro sports as a form of success (baseball, football, etc).
Despite this jealousy, he still cares about his siblings and has to watch a number of them die with not a peep from his father or mother (unaware the latter is already dead). Added to that, the other family have both chimed into the 'games' at this point tearfully encouraging their kids. So when Bobby's dad does finally speak up, it's with the encouragement that Bobby craves and the extreme scenario pushes him to act.
The transition from moody teen to brutal murderbot isn't quite as sudden as it seems, but it does jump pretty dang fast regardless and definitely takes away from the mind-boggling absurdity that is Fuchs and Borden.
    ---------------------------
All of that out of the way, I would recommend checking out The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum as an extreme horror that relies less on gore and more on just realistic humane cruelty and the depths of complicit action to stay in a group. It gets a whole lot worse when you later learn the novel is based on a real world crime, but I'd advise avoiding reading about that until after the novel for both spoilers and just... yikes, honestly.
That recommendation again: The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum
    Apologies for the mini essay.

As for the cows with the hopscotch and the meat grinders, the cows were dropped one by one as a means to make the hopscotch "slippery" and an "obstacle" for the kids to pass through. It was very descriptive with the cows being um...everywhere and the "spray" hitting the hopscotch causing them to slip and slide. Some do slip and add to the slippery mess when they unfortunately join the cows in the grinder.
I think at least one maybe two kids were lost this way.

Only one, Isaac made it across just before the cow guts sprayed, which hit Kip full force causing him to fall. Bobby witnesses this as he’s right behind Kip and blames Isaac for dodging it and basically forcing Kip to take the brunt of it. Also Bobby not only watches Kip die violently, he then has to hunker down and *let his brother’s crushed remains spray on him* so he doesn’t get pushed off as well. Poor kid was tortured his whole life then experiences *that.* It makes a bit more sense why he snapped as the book went on.

I swear this book reminds me of a dream I had when I was twelve. It was where a bunch of random kids and I were stuck in this building which was basically a McDonalds play place turned asylum. The first room was built like a sign up area to a bouncy castle building, to the right wall was the hole to the next room, it was like if it frame of double doors was there but there were no doors. This main area was an extremely dimly lit massive room with play tunnels and slides and all that scattered all across the walls except for the area where the entrance hole was. The only way to get into the tunnels was by crawling up a small tube slide. And in this area was a massive creature, too big to get into the tunnels. It was like No Face from Spirited Away when he’s really big but fleshy red without a mask. I remember in one area it was like the half sphere windows from McDonalds play place mixed with a planetarium, in there I found a teddy bear and met some little kid, he seemed pretty scared for obvious reasons so i gave him the bear. If you were able to get out of the place by finding your way through this maze of tunnels then you were transported to a mystical area with a white dirt trail with pastel grass and frail trees. At the end was a white swing bench. And because it was my dream and because im the main character, I obviously made it to there and I just sat. Just sat and thought and eventually woke up.

As a victim of parental emotional abuse and is the same age as Bobby I feel like I can see why he would so easily give into his dad’s orders. I as a kid was very dependent on my mom and all I ever wanted was her love. But it came and went along with phycological abuse. I don’t like what my mom does to me or my siblings at all. She harms us all and it fills me with so much rage and guilt! But I still find myself craving her approval and love. So if he was already feeling halfway motivated it makes sense Bobby would do that. He probably wanted to feel that validation from the person he never got it from. He probably wanted to feel what it’s like to have a “regular” relationship with his father.

it was really refreshing, because this book did in some ways blow up virally for its shock content, it's really refreshing to see it from the point of view of an audience member who actually understands and appreciates the genre for what it is instead of what it isn't. I've read my fair share of objectionable content, not specifically splatterpunk but in the ballpark of vile for sure, and there's obviously a big difference between a review by someone who was always going to hate the subject matter and the review of someone who is ready and willing and able to engage with that dark content as an audience member. And I appreciate your perspective, so thank you.
For the record both kinds of review can be really entertaining to listen to/watch but I like seeing both kinds. Kinda like how it's funny to listen to someone who doesn't like smut talk about how goofy it is out of context, but it's also fun to see someone who wanted that smut to be better have genuine thoughts about it, and both are a good time. But with gross stuff in this case lol.

I kinda want to read it even if I'm not a fan of Splatterpunk (I have a lot of aversion to gore and the mention of the.... SCENE... let's just say kinda icked me). I wanna read this as if it's like a mascot horror game. Heck the playground setting is bringing mind to things like the playhouse from Poppy Playtime chapter 3 which yeah, that was my favorite part of the entire game!!
So yeah I might read this. But I'm not 100% sure yet.

But doesn’t mascot horror require a mascot? I get what you mean I think, it is a horror that is basically “Hey what if innocent nice thing but Fucked Up and Evil” but mascot horror requires a mascot, it’s not *just* childhood but scary

Something i hate about genras like this and the extreme horror genra, is people think that they can’t be criticised or all criticism is invalid because “it’s supposed to be disturbing and make you uncomfortable, thats the point”

I think you're overthinking the Hopscotch trap. It was just a hopscotch game but the challenge was the blood from the cows (and kids) would make the ground slick so if you hop onto it with one foot you'll probably fall. If the little kid Donnie didn't go back Kip probably wouldn't have died because the cows just got ground up. If they all did it really fast no one would have died.

The reason Donnie is mute is because his mom cut his tongue out.

20 minutes in and gotta tap out unfortunately, but this video made me realize exactly what appeals and does not appeal to me as a horror fan. I realized that the thing that makes splatterpunk impossible to stomach for me is the focus on emotion and cruelty. Despite being a gorefest, something like Saw doesn't really bother me because the characters behave in a kind of cartoony way a lot of the time. Splatterpunk books, meanwhile, put you in the pov of the character, and while the gore is often completely unrealistic, the reaction to it, generally, is quite real. It's also why I really can't do SA scenes-- even if it's as absurd as physically possible, there's no version of it that isn't viscerally cruel. That's just me, though. Keep it up legend.
