I was recently found about him on Dewa Budjana song Covidian Minor and honestly didn't expect to see him here, being appreciated by the drum master himself😯😃 Also that's such an impressive take on the song and I like how he doesn't hesitate to do his own approach on the drumming while still keeping the flow and the feel of the original one😁 I guess I should check more of his stuff then hehe

That Elnoe kid... the fact that he kept the beat perfectly during the free flowing first part of the guitar solo with nothing else going on, no click track... that right there is so much harder to do than he makes it look. Amazing job man. And Larnell, aside from his extraordinary talent, he just has the warmest most beautiful soul. Such great stuff here.

Larnell is a true teacher of the art of drumming. He’s humble, supportive of what he sees in the drummers, offers some ideas and guidance and appears to truly enjoy what he hears from these talented musicians. It’s like a reciprocal type of event . He puts out the exquisite chops, others emulate that, he gets see to their efforts.. is encouraging and again ..he enjoys listening them.

Part of me thought that it was just cuz it was a really off beat fill that’s easy to get lost in. But I’m not like a drum pro so I can’t exactly tell when something is off or just eeeextra stank.

All of them where not tight at some part. But playing this turns your brain around and i cannot play this myself either :D
The most obvious was the guy with the fancy camera movement at the part with the bass line. I have the exact same problem with my right hand and and my right foot. The foot doesn't listen and is slightly behind when playing the exact same pattern.
The thing about rhythm and separating the good from the not so good is feel. You feel and know without thinking about it, if something is off. I have very good feel about music and rhythm and I believe it's like a gift. If you don't have it you gonna have a bad time. For sure it is learnable to some point but if you don't feel it and you wanna be a drummer... Hard times.
I play in a little trio with piano and voice. The singer attended a very professional and expensive singing school even to that point that she could give lessons herself if she would pay 50k for the license. My point is she knows how to sing and knows what to do with her voice.
What she didn't learn is knowing when to start singing by just listing to the song. She has to learn it for every song. I'd know instantly when to start singing just by listening and this makes improvising hard because she is not confident.
That's why I'm thinking it's either you have it or not and it's what separating the good from the best.

@@lerx1980 I agree. I have a friend who cannot even clap along to a simple 4/4 beat pop song. He can’t do it on the 1’s and 3’s and he absolutely can’t do it on the 2’s and 4’s lol. I’ve tried to teach him multiple times over the years. He just doesn’t get it and he never will and I have no idea why because it’s like the easiest thing. Even birds can bob their head to a beat. Yet some people just don’t seem to be able to grasp rhythm.

Larnell's reactions here are priceless. Not just a musician, but an educator. And the fact that no matter how dope he is or how famous he gets, he still just sits and enjoys videos as a FAN, because that's what we all were before we played. A lot of the Snarky guys are like this, and will sit and talk about music and gear with you like any other person at a show. When I saw them, I simply asked for a pic with Mike League, but then proceeded to ask me if I'm a musician and we spent a good 20 minutes talking about our favorite amps. Idk I know I'm kinda rambling but it just warms my heart greatly.

It's so awesome how many of these talented kids have made the best of modern day resources. When I started playing, the major music schools would not teach kids under 10. Today, kids can start anytime! This video is a great example of that. Larnell is such a great educator in his playing, instructional videos, and as a music professor. I love watching the drive in these young kids. It reminded me of a time when all I could think about was music and becoming a music professional. While life happens and some dreams don't come true I'm still encouraged by watching these kids. Current goal for the upcoming Winter is to get an electronic kit so that I can practice anytime. Maybe I can learn some Snarky Puppy tracks half as good as these kids!

It's like anything you spend thousands of hours on: you stop seeing individual units and start seeing patterns, chunks, categories. :) Which isn't to say Larnell isn't light-years ahead of me or you or most of us mortals, but I find that sometimes people tend to mystify musical ability as if it's something absorbed from the ether, when really it's just hours, weeks, years of dedicated practice. Anyone can do what Larnell does-provided they're prepared to spend the next decade or two spending 6-10 hours _daily_ on making and studying music. :) Obviously natural ability/talent factors in, but the time you invest has a way bigger impact long term.
So again, not trying to act like Larnell isn't one of the heaviest cats around, but he is still "just" a human... who spent way more time learning music than 99.9% of other humans. That is the primary, maybe the only, reason he can do things they can't. :)

lol yes, a great recovery is way more impressive than playing without errors imo, because although you can reduce them to a minimum, there can always be errors in playing, maybe you break a stick for example, being able to hop back on that groove is what's important

    • @Aaronmac404
      @Aaronmac404 4 ปีที่แล้ว +90

Any musician/teacher/professional worth their salt finds ways of addressing when someone makes a mistake in very creative, constructive, and uplifting ways. It's absolutely no surprise that someone as musically practiced and rhetorically sound as Larnell has the ability to do just that.
It's okay to think "They made a mistake there" or "their timing is off" as long as it's from a place of wanting to help them improve, and the way you choose to verbalize it and bring it up with the person makes all of the difference.
Edit; Also, Larnell has a tough job here. His parts on Snarky Puppy tunes are extremely complex, so he basically has no choice but to take a more laid back approach to reacting to people trying to replicate them out of fairness.

Larnell you are simply a great person. LOVED your encouragement to these drummers who are kids, kids trying to play very hard pieces. I noticed that the younger players got very good critiques with almost no feedback. Their YOUNG. When they can already play as good as they are you simply give them loving and encouraging feedback. For the 2 older teens (I assume) THEN there was a little more corrective feedback but still in a very positive way. And still the encouraging feedback. AWESOME. Great teaching skill right there.
