I like to imagine vanity armor sets are basically just like cosplay outfits where they're clever uses of things like foam rather than being sturdy defensive metal so that's why they give no defense.

This episode in a nutshell:
Which is stronger? A set of armor made of the same material that kept Cthulu himself at bay, or the same thing monks wear all day.
Defense is more effective on higher difficulties, but monsters also have vastly increased attack, so you still end up taking more damage from them overall.
Not to mention this goes the other way. Enemies will also take less damage with high defense, coupled with them dealing 2-3x more damage
Yeah the devs just added the more effective defense because dying to one hit is kinda lame
My favorite part about endgame armor is that even though Stardust armor looks like it'd be stronger than the Nebula armor, because the Nebula armor looks like it's just robes
It's still really fucking weaker than the Nebula armor in terms of defense
Wh ore magic
Well yeah I mean summoners have the lowest defence in the game
And yet nebula is still weaker than some red rocks I found underground
The blight of playing summoner will always be having the lowest defense numbers.
Funny how the monk's set is literally an eyebrow, a kitchen towel sized piece of cloth, and cloth trousers, yet gives more than 3 times the defence of a set of armour such as iron and lead armour
Hot take: helmets being the ranged head armor and masks being the melee variant is weird.
well wouldnt ranged want more openings to see
Cos it covers the face
You can’t blame them I mean there called “re-logic”

The reason why you take less fall damage in expert and master mode is because defense has a higher usage percent, from 50 to 75 to 100. Fall damage does not gain an increase in damage because it is not classified as an enemy, though it's the most deadly force in the game.

4 years ago I used to remember one of the drops from the moon lord was a fireworks gun, it was so bad that after the update it was removed from the moon lord's drops
now the party girl sells it
3:55 - They're basically cosplayer armor, so they don't provide any actual protection lol
Even plastic cosplay can provide some form of defence, and just cloth can protect you from cuts to an extent.
That being said, they _are_ vanity armour, so I get why they didn't give them armor values, but it sometimes feels ridiculously inconsistent. The moment you get the raincoat set ingame, you already have something better, so why bother giving it a defense stat?
Terraria has lots of things like that, that is to say there's plenty of frustratingly inconsistent equipment progression. Why bother farming a single uncommon mob for a rare armor drop when you could mine ore for half the tedium and twice the benefits? Being a massive game, I understand they wouldn't ve able to balance _all_ of it, but still.
@@baronprocrastination1722 Okay, I wasn't expecting a thesis as a response to my half-joke comment. But like, it's a _game_. A game where floating eyes and zombies and literal blobs of slime attack you.

@@Ketsui. eh I just wanted to talk about game design. Seeing the amount of 'neat but useless stuff' ingame that really only amounts to functional vanity saddens me. Like, I know this game pretty much amounts to a 'catch em all' kind of deal but with items insteas of pokemon, but still.

actually the terraria has a system, in which according to the difficulty your defense increases, for example, if you have 32 defense in classic, you actually have 16. In the master the defense does not change, that is, 32 defense are 32 defense. That's why the fall damage will be lower according to the difficulty.
For the monk aspect, (and I’m going by d&d logic) the armor itself doesn’t give you the defense but the idea that you’re fast and agile and can doge the attacks.
To be fair, this is also the game where having a few beetles orbiting you can nullify like, 45% of damage you take.

@@mosqit4324 no. They originated from earth.
moon lord: die to the boss
old ones army: die to boredom
The formula is different in master/expert mode. I’m not sure about expert (I believe it’s .75 less damage per 1 defense) but in Master mode every point of defense takes away one point of damage. This applies to enemies as well, which is why things like the shark tooth necklace are so potent in the higher difficulties.
I like to imagine the vanity sets that don’t provide defence are just made out of airbrushed foam like the outfits cosplayers wear. I also like to imagine that they don’t actually look that convincing, like you can clearly tell it’s just a few bits of foam hot glued onto a shirt, but the resolution of the pixel art allows us to suspend our disbelief for a moment haha

You are forgetting about something really important. Defense doesn't mean anything in Master Mode, so the buffs the armor grants is way more important than any defense you can get

Minecraft with terraria music is viscerally cursed
Armour part actually make some sense. In real life a lot depends on material, so it isn't that surprising that armour made with magic metal soft enough to be formed into robe doesn't protect very well. Also thick layer of cloth is surprisingly good as armour. In some cases it would be even better than steel plate armor,, and there is a thing like gambison, with is a steel plated armour that looks like regular clothing so it is possible that armour that looks like Christmas dress give more protection than some old or plant based armour. Damage from falling also doesn't have much to do with how well are your legs protected so it would be safer to land in good chest armour and rolling over your back after absorbing some momentum on legs, than landing only on your legs with steel plated legs armour. Cosmetic clothing is intended to be wear over regular armour so its real life counterparts would be expected to be as tin light and flexible as possible so that you can wear them on top of any armour is less realistic than that it would not protect. Don't get me wrong, it still isn't realistic at all but it as approximation it isn't completely off
Okay that do make sense
I mean... TO BE FAIR... There are celestial gods in the game along with floating blocks, magic, and monsters. Is this really that far fetched?
The game itself tells you that armor becomes more effective in harder difficulties

Defense is calculated via your drip and before you say anything about preferences, the drip gods dont care.
Re Logic is just following the common RPG logics
Logic: horse's dont take fall damage because of their shoes
Ok but when you put on the cloth you become absolutely jacked
Actually adding more weight to a fall doesnt affect the fall itself, since the acceleration is always the same no matter the weight of the falling object
Weight DOES affect air drag which will in turn affect terminal velocity ie. how fast you can fall. Although, In a vaccum, air drag does not come into play and thus both a feather and a car would fall at the same speed.
I love how the Ora Ora sounds when the Stardust Guardian hits the King Slime
The vanity sets are probably canonically costumes and also lucky horseshoes prevent fall damage by literally just being lucky, it follows that other accessories could have stat buffs like that
1:44 Stardust is summoner armor, it offers little defense, Solar is for Melee and offers the most protection. Stardust does give a big boost to your minions though
Why are we questioning the physics of a game that has magical goblins, pirates with flying ships, a literal hell, mythological lovecraftian Gods, and a spooky dark orb that drops a gun that was made in the 16th century when broken with a hammer
