    Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is fantastic, and everybody knows it.
    There's less of a consensus on its "Smart-Steering" option, an accessibility feature that some argue against because it's an accessibility feature.
    Bonus Content: Life Haxz with Jim Sterling

    I'm a teacher and I've been bringing my Switch and Mario Kart 8 to school with me. I play with my students in between classes or at the end of the day. They're young and/or inexperienced. We have auto-steering and auto-accelerate and it's fantastic for them. Now all courses are doable for even the least skilled players. Some kids say that it won't be fair because I'm much better than everybody and I provide perspective: you're playing Mario Kart at school. Who cares if you're dead last? This is awesome and thank God for Jim Sterling.

    I actually was sold on M 8 by smart steering (I already have the original+DLC). Not because I need it - I've been playing since super circuit on the gba, Im a super cool hardcore 1337 Mario kart player. But I have a 3 year old who loves cars and trucks and bikes, and it's wonderful to hand him a joycon and share my hobby with him early. It's a great way to spend some time with him. Crazy enough, he can't tell the difference between smart steering or no but he sure does love the cars and the colors and stuff! I love that I can be a lousy try hard and my son can be 3 years old and hold the controller upside down and we can both play the same game together and neither of us is having a compromised experience! (Also it is super adorable when he yells "DADDY WINS!" at the end of the race even when I didn't win). Thanks for the video Jim.

    I lost both my legs in 2001. I LOVED Rock Band when it was popular. Obviously, I could not play the drums and use the foot pedal. When Lego Rock Band was released, I bought that because there is an "Auto Kick Pedal" option. I was so excited to play the drums and not worry about failing songs b/c I have no legs. Accessibility is a good thing. Does me using auto kick to play I game I loved affect you at all?

      Hell no man and mad props to you for fighting the good fight and truckin' on, glad to hear there was a way for you to enjoy the game! The kind of people who get upset at this type of things are sad and do nothing with their life. It's not even a generalization, I've had many gamer friends over the years and the only ones that ever complain about easier difficulties are the ones who sit on their ass and play nothing but games all day. Being good at a game is ALL THEY HAVE. Therefore, someone getting to do what they do more easily personally offends them cause it takes away the one thing they had going for them, as pathetic as it is.

    • @laurent5176
      @laurent5176 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Nope. No one complained about the Game Genie (we loved playing with it with our friends when I was a kid). We actually used to enjoy sharing games and getting other people to like them too. I don't get this whole elite, gatekeeping, exclusive attitude. It was fun playing with other people. I did it right through college. In the dorms, I played Mortal Kombat with the guys in their suites because local multiplayer games were awesome and we all liked other people who played games, even if they weren't great at them.
      In short, who gives a shit how someone else enjoys their gaming experience? There are ways to avoid issues in multiplayer experiences through matchmaking. They can ban that mode altogether unless it's some sort of party group. Or they can have matchmaking that only matches people with the mode on with one another. It's not that critical. I don't know why people feel like they can't enjoy a game if someone who's not as good as them can enjoy the game.

      But ... you know we kinda called it 'cheating' right? and it wasn't given the same respect as beating or playing a game without them.
      The problem is now it's basically almost default & nintendo is pushing it as normal (which is sure the fuck should never be)
      Imagine... the nintendo babes of today, being made to play a sliver of the NES games... my god, they'd quit gaming, but seriously... look at the entire mentality shift.. from 'you'll have to get alot better to win, to ... You can win no matter what'

    My little down syndrome brother loves mario kart. he wants to play himself, but he's shit so he just gets me to control it for him instead while he sits and watches, which he's pretty happy to do, but he'd obviously be a lot happier if he could play himself. don't have a switch, but if we ever get one then, needless to say, smart steering would be fucking perfect.

    • @WraithMagus
      @WraithMagus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      This is hardly new.
      Super Smash Bros. became popular specifically because they took the fighting game formula from things like Street Fighter, which had become so overwhelmingly focused upon the same hardcore gamers that had been playing the game since the original Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II of the 90's that nobody new was capable of playing or enjoying the games, and made a game accessible to literal toddlers by making a game you can play only using the stick and one button (two if you want the specials, three for blocking/dodging). Suddenly, the fighting genre was popular again because Smash Bros. was easy to play for total noobs.
      How did people respond?
      Git gud, scrub! No items, Fox only, Final Destination!
      WHAT? Metaknight has a really annoying special? BAN HIM!
      We found this game that let us into a genre we couldn't have fun in before! Quick! Let's all recreate the exact same crap that locked us out the first time so that nobody can ever have fun again!

    True thing. Yesterday I was at a family party. I brought my Nintendo Switch and my copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. My 3 year old nephew wanted to play the game, a 3 year old. The Smart Steering option helped him get around the tracks, which will help him develop and get into gaming in the future and he had fun with it. He can learn with it and get better.
    Now people, please tell me why THAT is a bad thing? These idiots are acting like they DON'T want people getting into the games they love.

      It should be on option when you start up the game with your profile the first time. Sort of like games that ask if you would like to take the tutorial when you start it up for the first time. Forza Motorsport has adaptive braking and steering options, but it's less intrusive and you'll still crash if you use no other inputs. As for vibration, I still use wired versions of controllers, and turn the vibration off so there's no chance of it throwing me off in a critical situation. Because I like to play hard.
      Having said that. The way that someone else wants to play the game via in game options has literally zero impact on how I play. The only exception to this is cheesing just for the sake of winning, and using exploits. Neither of which are represented by some options that allow less adept players to enjoy the game.

    My wife never really played video games until the past few years. I, on the other hand have played video games my entire life and now work as an art director making them myself. So it's easy to say that video games have become pretty important in my house. Two years ago I bought my wife a 3ds and Animal Crossing and this sparked a newfound love of games in her. She has since moved on to playing the new Yoshi games and some Kirby games etc.
    She is by no means good at video games, she is quite obviously still learning the inherent video game language many of us started learning on the NES when we were children. So these optional modes of play for her have actually helped her to find a love for video games that she never understood before. If these modes didn't exist she would have just put many of these games down and never touched them again. These features have allowed her an entry point to modern video games that, as an adult she never would have taken otherwise.
    Now she has a much better understanding of what I do for a job, and we can have pointed discussions about games and subjects that we never were able to before. So for me, having another thing to relate with my wife, and more recently my oldest daughter, over is incredible. These features have literally brought my house closer together so... it's cool that people begrudge that.

      As a tangential topic, has she gotten to try Kirby: Air Ride? It's an old Kirby racing game for Game Cube Nintendo that has a simple control scheme (one button and the control stick) that was incredibly fun even with how simple it played. It easily was one of my favorite racing games, simply because I was able to get family members into it that didn't really play video games in the first place.

Exceed that preference, and the flavour, um, the fun of the curry, er, game is just completely overpowered by raw spice. No flavour to be found, just pure spice. And that's no fun.

      I agree wholeheartedly. To be honest, I'm pretty shit at games in general, but I still enjoy them, and part of what makes them enjoyable to me is easy difficulty settings, where I don't have to feel like a scrub every second of the day. The thing is, I like to go on harder difficulty when I've played a game a lot, know a lot about it, and feel like I want a challenge - not to have a harder difficulty as the default. Terraria, for example, is a game I've played long enough that I almost exclusively play it on expert difficulty for the challenge, the new items, and the sense of accomplishment, but there is no way in hell I would use an equivalent difficulty on any JRPG.
      Grinding is fucking tedious.
      This was really rambly too. Sorry about that.

      The first time I tried Civ 5, it was the first game like that I played, so I started easy. Now I play on the highest difficulty to give the bots the illusion of a fighting chance.
      The first time I tried Xcom: Long War, I played it on the easiest difficulty. Now I play it on the highest, because at this point, it would feel wierd not to.
      I have become the master.
      Time to see if it can land a single hit at me now.

      Jokes aside I agree with everything that is being said in this comment chain. That's why "difficulty curves" are a thing, and "difficulty levels" too, since gaming started to go past the basics of arcades. And people who are elitist about it are just assholes, period.

    • @vrapbrap
      @vrapbrap 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's good to include them for sure, but it is interesting to see how easy/arcade modes completely ruin some games. Like just TRY playing DCS world with the arcade settings that literally nobody ever uses. It's just awful. A flight sim that is focused solely on the simulation aspect, having 90% of the simulation stripped away.
      But its good that its there I guess, for those who stubbornly want to play it and refuse to just jump into a fun arcade game like ace combat.
      It doesn't hurt anyone that its there since IF someone is silly enough to play DCS world with arcade settings, they are playing on their own. They can't really join multiplayer servers as there the server admins dictate on the rules and you can bet your ass its full simulation all the way.

    • @iamanapejustlikeyouape2258
      @iamanapejustlikeyouape2258 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do see that being a good point, as the items are based on luck and as such can make up for playing well. I am not sure if there is a really overpowered item. Maybe one of the stars, the gold mushroom or the bullet. Say you had a player who got 3 of those in a row. It would be a huge advantage compare to someone getting 3 green shells or 3 bananas.
      With no items its more fair... however, I do think the items probably makes the game more fun for a lot of people. Its like a loot box every time you get something.

      Maybe if there was an option where item boxes showed what item they contained, maybe there would be competition based on that. (and item boosts based on what place you are, are, obviously, disabled.) And you should have an option to manually seed the item distribution, so you can have tournaments where people learn all the item placements by heart before the tournament.. Because hardcore.

Like please, tell me what does mechanically change with each difficulty option. Does it affect damage multipliers? Is certain loot/whatever locked behind a higher difficulty mode? FUCKING TELL ME DAMN IT!

Infinite credits = infinite retries, and cheats that give you all the upgrades at the push of a button leads to you doing shit you could never do before in the games, and makes you feel like a glorified badass in several games. To a lesser extent, Genesis and SNES games on easy mode with cheats or save states can be genuinely fun when you're just too tired to give a shit.

      +ProjectiluvOP Yeah what's with that?? Games that have "artistic" difficulty names (not even just like, "Private" and "Commander" but like idk, vague shit along the lines or "Weed-wacker" vs "Fertilizer") or even just "easy/medium/hard" but they don't say that, like, for example, depending on what you pick, you can't play half the quests. Or legendary loot is unobtainable. Or your health bar depletes faster. Best part is those bits could be for either easy or hard! I'm not bad at video games but sometimes my hands don't work great or I have processing issues, so I usually play on more relaxed settings (normal default, easy/modded/cheat mode for buggy or hard games) and it's a pain to find out I might be excluded from some of the game. That in itself is not a bad thing, necessarily -- I wouldn't hate if I was locked out or could "skip" certain levels or quests if there was enough content that that felt like "extra" or completionist stuff. But shit cut off that drastically affects how you experience the game? That blows. And not finding out until you read a wiki page or watch a video or something, cause the difficulty settings just said shit like
      *Weed-wacker*
      _For when you want to enjoy nature. A walk in the park._
      *Assorted Spring Seeds*
      _For those who enjoy parks a lot._

      That's the thing I don't get. Gamers are always like "We want games to be recognized as ARRRRTT!!!! We want games to be taken SEEERIOUSLEEE!" and then they complain when "cashyooalls" (I'm using that spelling exclusively at this point to get across the pearl-clutching elitism people exude when saying that word) actually PLAY games.
      I've come to this conclusion: It's like a treehouse. You want people to LOOK at your treehouse, you want people to ADMIRE the work you put into the treehouse. YOU WANT THEIR ADMIRATION FOR THE TREEHOUSE. But you're not letting them INTO the treehouse.
      "Hardcore gamers" have a cognitive dissonance/confidence problem. They want games to be recognized as ARRRRTTTTT, but only from the outside, so THEY can feel even more elitist about being part of that art. They want video games to be recognized, but what's even MORE important is that they, the players, get recognized as PLAYING the games. THEY'RE with it. THEY beat that game on that difficulty. They're part of twu gamers. They're part of the treehouse. EVERYONE LOOK AT THE TREEHOUSE! But don't let anyone in, because otherwise the treehouse is not elite anymore.
      That's what "hardcore gaming" is. It's "LOOK!!!! LOOK WHAT I'M DOING!!!! Look. Don't touch. No touchy."

      Kevin Thompson correct. And I'd argue that the best players do this 24/7. I beat a raid or five or six in Warcraft, but the best players had to be WORLD FIRST and they tried real hard to do so. Speed running is another example. Search TH-cam for "ADGQ Mario Kart 64". You'll never be as good as the guys running this game, and that's a challenge they imposed on themselves and no smart steering would ever get what they do done. So if you're worse then someone using smart steering, you need to git gud"

    Not only do i fully support Jim's opinion that easy modes wouldnt hurt any game guven tge right circumstances, but theres another thing i want to add. Even for an experienced gamer like me, I am not *always* a huge fan of high difficulty in *some* games (I emphasize "always" and "some" because I still like me a bit of Dark Souls). There have been lots of times where I do not want to put up with a steep difficulty after a long and stressful day at school or work. I want to give a shout out to Shadow Warrior 2's description of Easy mode, which consoles it's users for "not feeling like they to prove anything to anyone and just to be a badass at the end of a long and stressful day"

    • @tristanmagni9883
      @tristanmagni9883 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Why is that important? If video games are supposedly all about fun then why can't someone just enjoy the easy mode instead of the game cradling them. Easy mode exists for a reason, so just pick it if you want to. I like easy mode sometimes, but don't feel better because I picked "the story" difficulty even though they're the same fucking thing. If I want to play a game for the story sure I might pick easy but I don't need the game to tell me that it's okay I picked that.

    It seems as though the people complaining about optional easy/invincibility modes have completely forgotten about video game cheat codes that were in games in the '90s and '00s. I used invincibility cheat codes on some games when I was in middle school because I hated beating my head up against a wall in a game that I had really enjoyed up until that point. If I got hopelessly stuck, I could either use a level skip cheat or an invincibility cheat and go on my merry way. However, if you want to press on and reap the accomplishment of beating it yourself, then by all means, do it! Options aren't a bad thing!

  • @SSofIreland
    @SSofIreland 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    I've used the option to turn the difficulty down in a game myself -- namely, Yakuza 0, because fuuuuck trying to fight Awano and Lao Gui one after the other without any healing items -- and I won't apologise for it. Seriously. If you think an easy mode or an option to skip a mission is bullshit, then don't use it. Nobody's forcing you to use it. Nobody's putting a fucking gun to your empty little head.

      He actually missed a really important point that kinda nukes his argument, but admittedly people aren't articulating it well: 200cc.
      200cc is a super challenging bonus mode where you go faster than the courses are designed for (it was added in the DLC). Thus even pros fall off the course and braking is essential. But if you have Smart Steering on you never fall off the course or have to brake and it gives such a HUGE advantage it is absolutely cheating. Unfortunately you can't ban Smart Steering in regular online matches, only private matches which are Friends Only.
      Though similarly, you can't choose if you want 200cc or not in online matches either..

    • @tehtayziez
      @tehtayziez 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      GELTONZ This doesnt nuke his arguement remotely. It just speaks to nintendos lack of foresight when implementing a system. It just needs the option to filter whether you want smart steering players in your game.
      Sure that might affect que times but if it bothers you that much, you can just play 150cc

    • @Zinfidel1
      @Zinfidel1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +GELTONZ I don't have MK8D so I don't know but I looked it up and people are saying it can be turned off. It seems a lot of people are worried what this means to their super hardcore -small- GIANT dick waving skills but people are responding that skill is still a requirement in 200cc matches. Either way, it hardly "nukes his argument" because his other points still stand. Maybe complain about this supposed issue to Nintendo? Surely they will listen to you... surely.
      Oh, what was the saying that the hardcore like to tell peasants....... git gud 200cc non-auto steer players. I kinda like that idea! A 200cc match with some 6 year old kid defeating a bunch of 30 year old gaming elites using auto steer! lollool

    Jim's points about Mario difficulty actually goes back to the good ol days on PC where cheat codes existed. Or even game genie in the console games. There's always been a market for this stuff and its just a shame that game companies have moved away from it.
    I'm PRO-OPTIONS. I feel the lack of options in single player games is one of the great failures in gaming these past several generations. So few games take the FIFA, Civilization, or Don't Starve approach to gaming accessibility. Imagine having the New Game+ features of a game like Tales of Symphonia unlocked for FREE on your FIRST ever playthrough? I would LOVE to play RPG's with the option for 2x XP or 10x XP especially if those games expect you to grind.

    • @aristocraticcthulhu3831

      Roger Babin Bravely Second actually has that option along with whether enemies drop items or gold. I am gonna say, while I initially agreed I then remembered my 200cc experience and oh egad it needs to be removed from that. 200cc is a bonus mode where you go faster than the courses are designed for, thus requiring you to use your brakes. Even pros fall off the course here. But with Smart Steering on, you never have to brake or worry about falling off the course and it gives an excessive advantage and kinda ruins the game.
      So I'm okay with it in every mode except 200cc.

    • @Uldihaa
      @Uldihaa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a "bonus" anything. It's a basic mode, just like the others. And who said it's designed to go faster than the course was designed for? The brakes have always been there, and it's a hell of a lot more logical to say everything below 200cc is SLOWER than the tracks were designed for.
      And again, auto-steer disables drift boosting and short-cutting.

      Weapon durability in BoTW is more about balancing the complete free form exploration aspect of the game. By turning weapons and shields into effectively consumables they can award the same Knights Claymore 50 times and still have it feeling somewhat worthwhile as opposed to reducing the challenge for accessibility.
      Although the point about it being an option is still true. You don't HAVE to do it. Like you don't have to turn off random encounters in Bravely Default but it's there if you just want to get through a dungeon without stopping every 10 steps.
      In fact, BD's sliding scale might be a good way to do it. Have the default be normal durability, and it can go up to weapon invincibility or down to "Hope you like Bombs"

      One of my favorite things to do is take 4 CPU players, ramp up their difficulties to max, and set them to town on each other. It's a joy to watch. ^_^ Same with 2 CPU characters in Soul Calibur.

      this shit happens all the time in the speedrunning community with people accusing us of cheating by using glitches. it's hilarious. Being from the Zelda community it's probably a bit worse because a lot of the base plays "for the experience" and absolutely hate it that we're able to take shortcuts.
      I hear the Undertale community has a similar issue with lets plays where they spoil the game/demand the runners to only play the game in certain ways

      Well, just because you bought a car doesn't mean you get to enjoy driving it. After all, it's not the car I deem worthy of driving. So it doesn't matter what YOU think about your purchase, it only matters what I think about your purchase. And if you drive a car that I don't like you should feel bad and, by Jim, I will make you feel bad if you don't already.
      It's basically "Easy Mode" for feeling superior. Unless they shit on somebody else and "elevate themselves" by doing it, they don't have anything to offer.
      Same for people making fun of fat people in the gym (which almost never happens anyway). They put them down so they can always point to them and say: "Man, they sure suck and I am great. Even if my own personality is donkey shit, as long as I distract everybody I will be fine!" Imagine if the fat person lost weight. Now the spotlight is suddenly showing the non-existent personality of the bully.

      @23Scadu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Offline is much harder, because summoning is the real easy mode. Trouble getting through an area? Summon another player. Boss kicking your ass? Summon another player. It's not quite the game playing itself, but if you get a competent summon, it's even better: it's someone else playing the game for you. I'm not ashamed to admit I've easy-moded more than a few Dark Souls bosses in my time.

    I don't know why people are so against easy modes. Sports games like Madden and MLB the Show have had beginner modes for years and you don't see the hardcore players complain. The difficulty setting are so customizable you could adjust things like pitch speed and referee AI to to make the either as casual-friendly or hardcore simulation as you like. I actually wish more games could be like that.

      @a_lethe_ion 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmn, I though of something, but it would need online..
      "knighting." would work like a long summon- and it would also work like a inherent red eye ring, so that enemies have a higher aggro rate towards the knight. The person who gets the knight woudl take less damage, deal less damage and would get less souls but more embers/humanity to re summon their knight if they perish.
      the knight would either get an increased droprate or maybe some special fashion souls..
      maybe special gestures that would help communication, so that it still stays consistent and fits the mood of the game
      thsi would still have struggle as theme, cooperation, but it would mean more because its someone else who suffers for you..
      maybe the person that asks for knighting could get special spells that can heal their knight- so then two people could play together and the game would be open for people who may have longer reaction times or problem grabbing a controller or something..

    • @rasco6935
      @rasco6935 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      platformers are painful, but i find a lot of FPS games on PC quite fun. Comfortably silver elite on counter strike, although it took many hours of practice. However, 3rd person games such as dark souls and GTA i have a tough time, overcompensating many corrective actions. My dyspraxia is also quite mild, but it definetly has an effect, which is a shame because i am enthralled with the world of dark souls and GTA

    • @johnnybigbones4955
      @johnnybigbones4955 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I have dyspraxia too, though I've been through treatment for it to make it more manageable. Mine is not severe but I would say still noticeable (I used to have that distinctive "loose boned" walk until I got training with it.)
      I am generally quite bad at third person action games that require fast reflexes too. I could not get my head around God of War for example. When I tried to play Dark Souls this way, I found it very difficult. But then I changed my thinking to how I play strategy games - waiting for the right moment to strike, spotting patterns to exploit and building routines. If you think of it that way, the clunkier combat becomes a bonus for a dyspraxic rather than a punishment. I play slowly and methodically, carefully learning each new enemy type and building my response to each situation. Do I get killed a lot? Oh yes. And bosses are sometimes a huge struggle (fuck you Fume Knight!). But if you persevere perhaps you will enjoy it. But in the end, if you don't, it's no big loss either. I never played God of War but there are hundreds of other great games out there I can enjoy. I get a great feeling of satisfaction when I overcome a challenge in Dark Souls.
      As an aside, my brother plays Dark Souls like he plays all action games with a lot of charging in and relying on his excellent reflexes and instincts to see him through. Weirdly, we favour similar loadouts and equipment, but he struggles with the weenies and mooks and finds the bosses much easier, whereas I rarely die to a mook once I've learned it's rhythm but usually really struggle with bosses. I guess it's because learning a bosses full moveset is usually harder, but they telegraph more generally so someone with excellent reflexes can respond quickly if they are good enough, whereas the mooks reward care and patience.

      Oscar C hey Oscar, I enjoy dark souls on its regular difficulty. but I sometimes wanna feel like a badass, or just see the world, or different character builds.
      I use a cheat engine it has all kinds of crazy options to make the game easier. You can boost up your characters stats, or even turn on invincibility if you find any parts paticularly hard.
      However, I only use this stuff offline, which cuts out the community portion of the game.
      You can get banned if you use it online, but also... it would be way unfair to possible invaders.

    Wait! In the original Majora's Mask there wasn't that stone that helps you?!
    I'm so glad that it's in the game! Every time I play the game I'm always stressed about running out of time so that I don't have to fuck around the world trying to find the thing that I supposed to do is a great help (also if you haven't played for a while it's a great reminder).
    Anyway when I heard about this function in MarioKart 8 Deluxe I was happy about it. It literally helps other people to experience the same thing that you like. Why is that bad?
    Also as someone who is constantly trying to get my family members to play games with me sometimes this is a great option for them! I tried to introduce my parents and my siblings to some games but it's not that easy for someone who hasn't played a game coordinate their hands and eyes to play a game. So yeah great move Nintendo!

    Too right Jim. In my Video Game Design 2 class last year, we talked about Dark Souls having difficulty settings and virtually every one else (all a bunch of 19 or 20 year-old elitist gamers apparently) were vehemently against an easy and medium mode added to it. I suck at Dark Souls... I get so frustrated and I can't seem to understand the subtle nuances of it or gain the muscle memory and reflexes to beat any of the three games. Perhaps my gaming preference precludes newer games and I should just stick to old fashioned games that I played as a teenager back in 1993 because I'm 36 and I'm just stuck in the 90s. What I took away from that discussion in class was this: the inability of the others to not let something go, that they wouldn't even utilize and effect their game play experience, is a testament to their youth, their narrow mindedness forged greatly by the online community that bullies people into, as Jim said, "getting good or fucking off", and their sheltered inexperience with or wanton unwillingness to acknowledge the existence of gamers who may be learning impaired, like myself. Thanks a lot Jim for this video.
