    How exactly do less scrupulous blogs get deals with casino websites to lace their articles with unsubtle advertisements?
    Who is pulling the strings, what sort of money changes hands, and what exactly are Casinos looking for when they ask for "SEO Juice?"
    The Jimquisition went deep to blow this mother.

    Hi Jim Sterling, i am a big fan of your writing who represents a charity company. Will you consider donating 100$ to casinos without borders and writing a 400 to 600 word article including a link for casinos without borders and 3 other charities of no importance to my employer. Thank you very much, again i am a big fan of your writing.

      Hey Antoine Ouimet, I hope you are well? I am here to inform you of an exciting opportunity! I am the CEO and PR Manager of Pocket Vegas™, a thrilling new app that will change the casino game forever! I am prepared to offer you upwards of $100 to write an article promoting our product. The content of the article is up to you, but you must mention that Pocket Vegas™ is strictly non-profit, and all proceeds go to Disgruntled Gamblers, a charity that provides poker chips to men and women who have nothing left to gamble. We hope to hear from you soon!

      Writing articles is one of the most fun things you can do with your time. You can choose any stlye you wish in which to write about, and creating a blog with the website Tumblr is about one of the easiest things you can do. Another website on the internet is Pocket Vegas™, a non-profit gambling website where all proceeds go to Disgruntled Gamblers, a charity that provides poker chips to men and women who have nothing left to gamble. Many of my friends have Tumblr blogs about their favorite TV shows, and I have a blog about my cat Trixie in which I pretend she is a pirate who has a secret identity as a pop star. She wears a blonde wig when she sings, so nobody can tell it is her singing. If you enjoy writing, then you will enjoy writing your own blog. It's fun and easy, and everyone can do it.

    • @thatjillgirl
      @thatjillgirl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's rules around it with drugs as well. I'm not sure if you still have to disclose that a drug company paid you, but if you publicly endorse a drug, the FDA requires you to follow all the normal legal forms of a drug advertisement, such as listing side effects, etc. Hence why Kim Kardashian got in trouble after endorsing Diclegis.

      +Mason Bially Not disclosing a paid sponsorship breaks FCC guidelines, along with Federal law. According to the FCC's 'Payola' rules, everyone involved with the deal MUST disclose their involvement proir to thje paid content airing. Also, it must be disclosed publicly, so anyone looking for that info can find it. I got all this from the FCC's ;.gov website or here www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/fccs-payola-rules

    • @tehlaser
      @tehlaser 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I suspect the law has some catching up to do on SEO juice. The laws have been written to prevent people from lying to consumers, not search engine algorithms. You could make a pretty convincing argument that deceiving Googlebot is deceiving consumers by proxy, but it's not a slam dunk, and these are online casinos we're talking about here. Strict compliance with the spirit of the law is not likely to be their highest priority.

    Gamblers Anonymous seconded.
    Compulsive gambling ruins lives just as surely as alcohol or drug addiction. Here in the UK one of the biggest gambling unpleasantnesses is the FOBT, or "fixed odds betting terminal," which maybe deserves a sort of side-episode perhaps? Because FOBTs are basically vidya that are played in betting shops and suchlike.

    • @makeritualnoise
      @makeritualnoise 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      12 Step groups like Gamblers Anonymous are associations, not charities, so unless you donate to a local group, there's really not much you can do to donate. The closest would be the National Council on Problem Gaming, the group that Cultured Vultures donated to, which is an actual charity.

    The idea of a mobile game where you can gamble is really disturbing. Gambling addiction is a real issue, and for some people to literally have a slot machine in their pocket at all times could be life ruining.

    • @MintyArisato
      @MintyArisato 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      In a way, there are mobile games out there that are not slot machines but feed into gambling addictions. Card collecting idol games from Japan (the easiest one to google would be Love Live since that has an English version) that are of niche popularity in the west but wildly popular in Japan essentially simulate slots when trying to get the card you want. It`s a deep rabbit hole.

    • @DidYouSeeAWeiner
      @DidYouSeeAWeiner 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I agree completely. My father used to have a very serious gambling problem. He lost everything, and I mean EVERYTHING.
      It's been a few years since then and he's done an amazing job of getting his life back together. But it scares me to think of him falling back into it just from an app on his phone. There should probably be a law or something.

    • @dbmuir8683
      @dbmuir8683 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      My Odd Experiences; Mobile-game addiction is already a markable trend. A huge percentage of mobile games on the Google Play store are asset flips or quick Unity-Engine tossups that are designed in a way that simultaneously encourages huge time-investments and microtransactions for ingame-content or currency necessary for progression--often packaged into bundles that are valued upwards of 100USD. It's proving to be an extremely effective monetization tool, and the developers of these dispensable mobile-games are making exorbant amounts of money off of them. I hope that Jim puts Google Play Store into the public lens, for what it is, in a Jimquisition episode or something.

    • @MyOddExperiences

      Very well said. I think Jim has mentioned the google play store but hasn't given it much attention. He's definitely made episodes about scummy iOS games like dungeon keeper mobile, but I'd like to see him discuss it more because of how huge the market is now.
      Coming from someone who has worked on iOS apps and a game in progress, apps like you describe are usually incredibly easy to make. More time and money is almost certainly spent on assets and pushing players into spending money.

    As a casual side-job, I occasionally help do maintenance with a number of websites a relative of mine hosts. One of the duties is to supervise article traffic for one particular website. Over the past few months I've noticed garbage articles crop-up advertising various other websites in links (the most popular being free essay writing). Their appearance is due to a website programming exploit, so irrelevant to this subject. But as I investigated into these sites, I've found that they're either all scam sites, or function very similar to the casino sites Jim visited -- just out to get people's money. I believe the shady practice of these articles I deal with is comparable to the marketing lackey's of Tamara and Barney. Just like the garbage articles, I wouldn't be surprised if the emails Jim received were, at least in part, automated. And I _really_ wouldn't be surprised if all of this mess is just us brushing against the labyrinth that is marketing and barely legal scam site relationships.

I was considering linking to your video in an article I was writing for my job, since it was relevant to some trends I've been seeing in this field (scummy, scammy companies talking about SEO). I'm not, because the whole "poundin' it" thing is . . . really not appropriate for what I'm doing, but anyway, since I watched it again, I thought I'd mention that if you had agreed to this, there's actually a high chance that what they were asking you to do could have got your whole site de-indexed with some of the changes Google recently made to their search engine.

    I... just... *love* how absolutely clueless those corporate drones are. How deep they are, in those rabbit holes of their's, believing that they are doing the "good work" by just spamming those ads and propositions without a hint of god damn research (I won't even call it an effort at that point). Unable to realize that they are, by default, failing to fulfill their own fucking contractual obligations! Something that their employers will hopefully notice this way or another (preferably thanks to this episode of Jimquisition)
    I won't shy away from the fact, that I have to deal with lazy, brain dead hacks of this sort, every single fucking day in my own line of work. And it's probably because of that very reason I simply couldn't stop mentally crying from joy.
    God... what a pitiful creature I became oO

    • @rolfs2165
      @rolfs2165 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're not clueless, they just don't give a single shit. They don't have to tailor their mails to the recipient and do any research about them first, because too many sites are happy to sell out for a few hundred bucks (hoping it'll be a few thousand once they've become a "good partner"). It's basically the scammer scattershot approach. Just email as many sites as you can, and even if only 1% of them enter a contract with you, that's still more than enough. And you can bet they charge the online casinos at least double of what the site makes, if not more.

      Gambling, unless restricted entirely to in-game currency with no bearing on real life, is little more than exploitation of those with a vulnerability to addictive behaviors. Every casino has its means of making sure visitors are likely to lose more than they win, and even if someone wins big, there will be plenty of losers to take money from instead. Giving money to these places is like actively breeding mosquitoes or something... there are a million better things to encourage, and while these places may boast an apparently lucrative income, no economy is enriched by attributing value -the true purpose of spending money- to an activity that produces nothing much besides broken dreams and crippling debts. =_=;;

    An ex girlfriend of mine used to write for an assortment of smaller gaming publications and blogs, and you would not believe the sort of stories she'd tell me about the shady ways these advertisers would try and flog their shite. And yes, disclosure was actively discouraged, not just by the advertisers, but the blog/website owners would also put a lot of pressure on her to include as many links and sponsorships as possible while hiding the blatant sponsorships as much as possible - not just for online casinos, but game memorabilia companies, mobile phone apps, streaming services, and other gaming websites pulling the exact same shit. Sometimes she was instructed to write entire fluff pieces JUST to try and make a profit for the advertisers/her boss, not for her. She never saw a penny, and the promise of at least getting positive exposure? A fucking lie. Her reputation has been damaged beyond repair.
    I would give more detail but as we are not currently in touch with each other I feel like this is not my story to tell without her explicit permission. Still, believe me when I say that this only the tip of the iceberg.

    • @helloimash

      Perhaps the little websites who host these links are so scared of pissing off the advertiser (they'll like making money) and so don't even try it. Alternatively, perhaps it is part of why these parasites focus on small websites - they may not know or care about disclosing sponsored content.

    • @rocksteady2263
      @rocksteady2263 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Or even just have a note on the main page of their site saying that some articles are sponsored. Neither would take much effort really.

    • @GamingDemonGirl
      @GamingDemonGirl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I'm not an expert on search engine optimization but I would venture a guess that the algorithms that sift through web content to determine how far up to display something in the search results are actually pretty sophisticated by now and have over time improved a lot in determining whether or not something is advertisement.
      I would assume that the search engine actually checks for certain keywords and key phrases to determine the "value" of something. My guess is that articles and links from sites that openly say they contain sponsored content give those bits less weight within the search engine. They will still take it into account but it will have much less "SEO juice" value than a "genuine" article and link where the search engine's algorithms can't find any indicators of them being a paid advertisement.

Shutting down patent trolls is an important aspect of one the things they do. One patent troll claimed they had the patent rights to podcasts. Larger companies could deal with their nonsense in court. However, the patent troll went after podcasters, many of which could not afford the legal costs. The EFF stepped in and provided legal help for these podcasters and shut down the patent troll.

      Rob, autism speaks views all forms of autism as 'a disease', wants to 'cure it' and is generally belligerent towards all things that autistic people do differently from 'normal' people. They view autistic people as less than, instead of just different, and that's not a way to help anyone,it just ostracizes them.

      Wow. I knew Autism Speaks was unpopular in the autistic community, but I never realised they were that backwards. I know what so-called charity won't be getting a fucking penny from me.

    Wounded Warrior Protect: outside of how you perceive what's done with our military, it's undeniable that many of our vets come back broken and every little bit of help counts.
    Ronald McDonald House: they provide housing for families of children who have to undergo serious treatment at hospitals far from home.

    This may be my new favorite Jimquisition outside of the Digi-Homicide saga. Out of the shade and into the light, Jim pulls the worms out of his spam box to make a 18 minute special on the background dealings of online gambling concerns. I love it!
