    You know I used to hate you without even knowing who you were or what you do, just heard your name thrown around in gaming as if you actually were the devil. Jim Sterling this, Jim Sterling that. I gotta say, I recently clicked on one of your videos thinking "oh let's finally get to see this idiot in action" and I was greeted with everything I expected you NOT to be. You're actually nothing people make you out to be and you're quite the entertainer. I instantly subscribed. Keep doing what you're doing as it is truly amazing. (Now I gotta go all the way back to the beginning and watch your videos cause I have a feeling they're actually good)

      i had a very similar experience. I did watch some of Jim's very early videos when he first arrived on the scene and thought he was a twat. Then about a year ago one popped up in my feed and I watched it and thought it was brilliant. I then proceeded to watch the previous 2 years worth of vids. I also love that Jim openly admits his early work was a bit shit and how he has changed his stance on a range of issues since those early days. Which is funny cos the one label that people like to slap on him is "Arrogant" , and if you really follow his work you can see that label is total Bollocks. Keep doing what you do Jim, you are the voice of reason in the shitshow of the modern industry and you crack me up.

    I'll never understand the "no resources for a female character" line. If they had only said "Sorry, it's too late in production to add that in now, but we'll definitely consider it for future games", it would've been honest *and* earned them goodwill.

    • @charleslindeman2169

      Common sense and this industry is like oil and water, they don't mix.

    • @SamOliver4
      @SamOliver4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Well that's the funny thing about the games industry, isn't it? They act like the culture of lying is the only way when the best option is almost always the most truthful one.

    • @AusSP
      @AusSP 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They do have a budget... And they had added female characters as Assassins in past games. When they say "it would have cost a bunch more", that's probably way more honest than "it's too late". In fact, saying that it's too late would be an incredible lie - they would have made that decision at the *start* of the development cycle, not the end.
      Sure, it's possible, but given the poorly tested mess that Unity was... they *definitely* didn't have the money to add a female Arno, or a bunch of MP assassins. They didn't even have the money and manpower to make the game work.

    • @RB-sh4lo
      @RB-sh4lo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      AusSP They have the money and manpower to make each game amazing, but they do not have the caring or the desire to do it.
      And they know that they will get away with it.

    • @AusSP
      @AusSP 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably not wrong, but the dev team likely doesn't have that much control over their budget or release date. Ubisoft's willingness to provide money impacts what the dev team can do. That doesn't mean that the dev team is lying or being sexist when they say "we can't do this, because we don't have the money/time".
      The flow of the game is built in such a way that (an additional) female playable character, in SP or MP, makes literally no sense. Not that it made sense in Syndicate, but that's more about Ubisoft caring less and less about Assassin's Creed's original framing device.

I bet Laura lost more than a few listeners when sony denied Until dawn and I'm sure some of them didn't come back. I feel bad because I find it way to easy to forget that these companies just blantly lie don't scrutinize them as much as I should as a result. Glad you're saying something though Jim. THAT is why i won't be buying from certain game publishers. Gearbox is one of my top "buy it when it's in the bargain bin" or "get given it from a mate". Bioware are now up there alongside about 10 others. I refuse to pay these cunting wankers a single penny. Oh, I'll buy illegal copies and FUCK to the lying industry.. fuck em.
      The game industry is hoping we're all bahhhing little sheeple who'll pay whatever toss they release 12 months before it's even finished.
      The assholes who released Mass Effect Andromeda? I won't be touching anything by those 3rd wave feminazi SJWs. THAT game was nothing like ready for release, probably never beta tested by more than overworked developers who were likely thinking at that point,
      "ohhh, who fucking cares if it still needs debugging and optimisation??? tell the publishers it's done cos I AM DONE with working 12-16 hour days on this SJW tripe... 5 years working on this shit and getting bounced around from one subsidiary to another so i don't even know the name of ANYBODY else working on this shit."
      You ask any developer what their work rate is and they'll all agree that they have become monkeys trying to write a fresh script for hamlet [ie? thought of as just some guys who can 'do code' so sitting at a computer for 14 hours a day for 4 years is easy. Not exactly hard work, is it?]
      The annoying thing is that a small company like 'Looking Glass Studios' way back in the late 1990s and early 00s actually worked HARDER BUT they were RECOGNISED FOR THE GENIUS CODE THEY PUT OUT AS GAMES LIKE Thief 1, 2 and 3. And they ENJOYED the hard work because they were RECOGNISED as being people who took a concept and created a fantastic world with stunning audio etc at a time when soundcards were fucking big ugly slabs hardware you plugged into a PCI port.
      Now? It seems to be the publishers who are doing all the 'big talk' whilst they rake cash from the lies after overworking a disparate group of devs who don't know each other from adam and eve and the publishers don't give a FUCK!
      Sean 'the LIAR' Murray Could have created an amazing game IF HE HADN'T LIED SO UNASHAMEDLY BLATANTLY AND MADE PROMISES ABOUT A GAME CONTAINING QUADRILLIONS OF WORLDS.
      12 guys trying to 'write a story in a virtual GALAXY' in less than 4 years with zero experience of open universal environments? I don't know how so many people were fooled. I didn't even hear of this fuckup until i was watching Twitch after I got the nod from a mate who told me to "check out Twitch... check out some gamestreams called No Man's Sky" and I thought, "how? what? where? how did this even happen???". People were smashing up their controllers and PCs as they'd just paid $60 for a game made in 2 months by 2 Nigerian conmen with a helpline that said "We're sorry but this number is no longer recognised"

      It's not just games publishers; it happens regularly in normal day-to-day life too. I've lost count of the amount of times people have tried to tell me some stupid lie without ever considering that I could find out the truth in about two minutes. Humans in general seem to lack the ability to predict what others will do even just a few minutes in to the future. Either that or people think that they are such convincing liars that nobody would doubt what they said and actually check it out.

      But that's the point. People *don't* do that. Or at least, even if they do, they get a week's bad PR then everyone gets bored and moves on. If people actually want to fix anything, rather than just indulging in outrage, they have to boycott publishers that do shitty things and convince their friends to do the same. Most people care less about this stuff than missing one game they want.

Why the fuck does jim (or you) think it's Sony's fault if Laura spends her life leakin stuff and taking the risk it gets denied ? Leaking infos is not journalism, it's just trying to get attention by revealing stuff other journalists agreed they wouldn't, cause it never EVER serves the game to be leaked. It's also how you show you don't respect game companies.

      I too have backed a few projects, a few early access games. Never been an early adopter though, always waiting for there to be at least something playable before committing to anything.
      So far i've yet to be stung by an early access title, call that luck or careful evaluation of the titles I'm not sure. I am a backer for Star Citizen, a game I have high hopes for but am somewhat concerned about its scope and scale being difficult to deliver in a way which matches fan expectation.

    In all seriousness, the denial of a product to protect its reveal is fair enough, but actively denigrating a journalist for reporting it before they want it is uncalled for. These companies could simply say nothing at all, or simply use the attention they're getting to drum up hype. They are taking games journalists for granted as an expendable service, when games journalism usually does a lot of the things that many PR departments are too afraid of, and often are thrown into the firing line for it. They'll announce delays, updates, and releases, often thanklessly, whilst PR departments don't say anything, and it stinks how the messenger is shot so often for this.

    I just 'love' how the No Man Sky's guy, in those interviews, responds with such a tone and smile, like rather than saying 'yes, you can do that!' with a straight face and all, he just goes like 'eh... sure, if you want that, it is in there for sure'.
    EVERYTHING was a yes, and 'sure why not that too?' yeses at that.
    No wonder many of us were dubious of that game before launch, but mostly from the lack of explaining WHAT we would do. 'bazillion planets' is not gameplay, and I told the sub when I asked them for explanations, that those 'unique' worlds would probably be as unique as Spore's planets. Different grass and water color.
    But I guess I 'just dont get it'.
    ... Yeah, I dont. I really dont.

    Hey, can people please upvote, this, I have a message I want Jim to see. It seems it's not only GameStop's social media is taking swings at him, I think they are training managers and employees to be actively against him. I went into GameStop to buy a game and the manager spent 15 minutes trying to convince me nothing was wrong with microtransactions and loot boxes and they were a good thing. Even though Gamestop makes no money from loot box transactions, I think they have just started this campaign to be actively anti-Jim Sterling

    • @RobotMasterSplash
      @RobotMasterSplash 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Duh, Gamestop is in the publishers pockets and they have deals that require them to promote games with microtransactions. That's how they ran out all the other competition and why they can't keep up with consumer interests today. There's no use "discussing" this with minimum wage employees who are being heavily pressured into selling you this shit.

    • @dreamerabe
      @dreamerabe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      GameStop does sell virtual currency for some games. But apart from that they don't want people boycotting games because they have microtransactions. They want people to buy those games. Especially used. They want good corporate sheep.

    Thanks for fighting the good fight Jim and i LOVE that you are getting under the skin of that LOSER on game stop's social media trying to defend the ridiculous amount of greed in the game industry today, the battle is slow and and tough but we are slowly gaining traction and the fact that others are writing about the micro transaction plague, when most of games media used to sweep it under the rug is proof

  • @trafalgar2047
    @trafalgar2047 7 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    The consumers lost this battle long ago and it fucking sucks.
    When Hello Games was actually investigated over False Advertisements for No Man’s Sky (I believe it was by an UK institution), I actually thought that it would be great for all of us, but literally nothing happened... We absolutely need a precendet case, so this industry gets better. In no other industry, you can lie about your product to the point that you ship an uncomplete or even broken product and then just patch it for several months until it works. And that's just sad...

      I have a good friend that used to manage one. Left cause he just couldn't handle how morally awful their business practices towards customers and other employees, especially at that position. He then proceeded to quit retail outright because retail itself is typically and unfortunately lacking in the moral department.

    • @ThePlayfulDreamer
      @ThePlayfulDreamer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's the end of my story as well: I refuse to work in retail ever again. The manager at my store was miserable, always complaining about the company, etc. Morale was in the negatives except for our assistant manager, bless him. As far as service jobs go, I'd rather scrub toilets than sell shit to people they don't want/need.

    Here's a very-super-uber-ultra-mega easy way for companies to not seem like liars when asked a question when they don't want give any information: STAY SILENT!! Don't respond to anything, and when asked in public, just say "No comment", "I can't give any info on what we're doing", or something along those lines. It's as simple as that! If something is rumored and no one has any word from the company or actual hard evidence, then the rumor stays a rumor and no one gets into trouble (or is seen as a complete ass-hat).
    However, when announcing to the public what you're doing with a game (especially when no one asked about the topic in the first place) and said thing(s) isn't present in the actual game... there's no defending that.

  • @Darkbeatdk
    @Darkbeatdk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    It hasn't been completely out recourse. Remember Anthem from E3? The new Destiny killer game? Of course you don't, because the gameplay looked so fake that nobody believed that it was a game and for that reason everyone has forgotten about it. Digital Foundry had to sit down and deeply analyze the video to come to the conclusion that it used several effects that meant that it probably was in-engine footage.
