    It's not that Elijah's character sought out to become a villian but more that he had become obsessed with discovering the purpose of his existence and understanding why he should be born under such uniquely extreme circumstances. By Elijah finding David he had been able to confirm his theories and in doing so answer a question that has plagued him most his life; as a consequence Elijah was also able to remove the sadness that both him and David shared in not knowing what the purpose in life had been. For a superhero movie that was meant to be based in reality, M. Night certainly took the cake with this film which has been a favorite of mines since I was a kid!

  • @Kestrel1971
    @Kestrel1971 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    One of the things I love about this movie is that it's shot in such a way that if you freeze-frame it, the scenes look like panels from a comic - one of the best examples is when David stands up after pulling himself out of the pool - the angle showing his feet and cape with the two kids in the distance is exactly how it would be drawn in a comic.

    • @CopiousDoinksLLC
      @CopiousDoinksLLC ปีที่แล้ว

      It goes a little deeper than that - if you pay attention, you'll notice that almost all of the scenes dealing with David's 'awakening' as a superhero feature the characters being framed by a rectangular piece of the background/foreground around them as if they were featured inside of a comic panel.

    This is my top favorite M. Night Shyamalan film. Great story and I’ve loved the message it carries. Great reaction as always. 5-0 is a reference to the police. In the 70’s there was a cop show called Hawaii 5 0. Which was actually a reference to Hawaii being the 50th state of the U.S.

    "Five-Oh" or "5-0" is a reference to a 1960's TV show (remake in the 2000's-2010's) called "Hawaii 5-0" about special police investigators in Hawaii. The name comes from Hawaii being the 50th territory to become a US state. The term "Five-Oh" has come to be a slang term for police.

    If this movie hadn't followed on the heels of The Sixth Sense, it would have done really well.
    My wife and I still use "I gotta get some chicken in me" to express hunger.
    Five-0 means police. There was a TV shows in the late 1960's called Hawaii Five - 0, which is the name for the Hawaiian police detective branch. They remade the show recently.

    "Five-Oh" are the police. The term comes from the name of an old TV series, "Hawaii: Five-Oh" that followed the state police in Hawaii. The "Five-Oh" refers to Hawaii being the 50th state admitted to the United States.

    Haven't seen it mentioned yet, so here goes. "Five Oh" is a nickname for the police. It comes from a TV show from the 1970s called "Hawaii 5-0" which is what Hawaii calls their state police. It was such a popular show that it was rebooted in the 2000s. It was also so popular that "Five-Oh" is now slang for any police force. Loved your reaction! I loved this movie, and the other two in the trilogy. "Split" is next. It is VERY intense and James McAvoy give (my opinion) an Oscar-worthy performance as a man with multiple personalities! Looking forward to you seeing it, and "Glass", the last movie in the trilogy, which brings all three main characters together (but not necessarily as allies). Love ya!

    Hey there, you awesome person !!! The store associate who told Elijah that he "was gonna call Five-0" was referring to "calling the cops". Five-0 refers to the TV show, Hawaii Five-0, as Five-0 spells 50, as in the 50th state ... that's what the call the police in Hawaii, Five-0.

    the score was excellent. You only hear snippets of the "hero theme" early in the movie, you don't hear the full hero theme until he is pushing himself up from the pool. In the fight scene with the man in orange, it isn't fast-paced, action score, it's slower, the importance isn't the killing, it's the becoming.

  • @Thundarr100
    @Thundarr100 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Dasha, you are so cute. No, this movie was not based on a true story. Although I do understand the confusion, because the way the story ended is typical for movies based on true events these days. But it used to be used a lot in other types of movies back in the day. The comedy “Animal House” and the action/drama “Red Dawn” are two examples of ending fictional stories in this fashion.
    I will point out, however, that Elijah’s condition is very real. David’s condition is loosely based on another very real condition called Osteopetrosis (aka “Stone Bone” or “Unbreakable Bone” disease). While the bones of someone with this condition are virtually impossible to break, it does not make the person immune to injury. They are still susceptible to soft tissue damage and infection (cuts and diseases). Furthermore, they also develop abnormal bone growth, causing physical deformities such as hunched backs, clubbed foot, or even a deformed skull that resembles hydrosephalus. David had none of these. Although the density of the bones of someone with this condition makes being able to swim very difficult, as they tend to sink to the bottom of the water, so that part is somewhat accurate.
    David also seems to have a fictional version of another condition called Myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy. This condition causes a person to develop muscle mass very quickly, and gives them roughly double the strength of a normal person. However it also increases the person’s metabolism so that they have to eat constantly. And if they can’t get enough nutrients while they’re growing up during their formative years, it causes their growth to be stunted and generally don’t grow much taller than 5’. Someone growing to be 6’, have a normal appetite for food, being super strong while NOT looking like a professional bodybuilder is pure fantasy. However it is BASED on a real genetic mutation.

    You said "if hero's don't exist without a villian, maybe it is better not to have hero's at all". The problem is, we KNOW that we DO HAVE the villians.....and if the villians exist, then where is the hero? You thinking assumes that the hero comes first. What if the villian comes first? We need the hero
    Also....the movie is part of a trilogy.....the next installment is "Split". And then, "Glass". Take a watch
