    The best line in this film is right after the Operative says "A lot of innocent people are dying up there," and Mal replies "You don't know how true that is." It took a few watches to realize he was talking about the Reavers, who were also innocent victims of the Alliance.

    there's famously a BTS story about Nathan Fillion missing the point of the line "She's tore up plenty, but she'll fly true." when Gina Torres understood and was asking how to play it, and it totally went over my head when I was younger too! It's so interesting to me that Dasha picked up on it immediately lol

      Watch Alan Tudyk's series called Con Man. It has alot of the cast from Firefly in it, plus many other Sci Fi favorites and Leslie Jordan. It's about an actor on a cult favorite series that get canceled too early and he gets type cast and has to go to Comicons. It's really funny.

    The first time I watched this I total missed River's comment after the Reavers showed up at their robbery attempt. After they kill the one that crashed into their loading bay she says, "They never lie down." Later, on Miranda, everyone that didn't become a Reaver just lay down and died. Very sneaky writing. 🙂

    • @blechtic
      @blechtic 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      You call it sneaky, I call it good writing. While most viewers, including me, probably miss all of these and some call them clues or signaling or setting the scene or whatever, the point is to have a logical connection between things happening earlier and later. It would be poor form to have a script, where things just happen over a longer period of time without logical connection.
      Now, unconnected, ordinary things happen all the time, but a script consists of selected scenes during a period of time that tell a coherent story. That is why it exists. Having unconnected scenes would feel choppy and unconnected and it would baffle the audience. There are e.g. some comedies, that feel like they were written by TV sketch show writers, which look like normal movies, but simply do not work, because the sketch-like scenes lack the connecting tissue that turns them into a movie. They may touch all the bases and go through the motions, but because the scenes lack a purpose, the movie basically falls apart. The female-version of Ghostbusters comes to mind: It has a bunch of unconnected sketches and then you get a boring CGI battle. Whereas the original Ghostbusters has set-up scenes, character introduction or progression, or advancement of the story, the female version is unconnected and pointless (nevermind that the reason for making the movie seems equally pointless).
      If you're going to condense, say, two weeks of people's lives into a two-hour movie, you are not going to "select" random timeslots as scenes with them sleeping or going to bathroom or having some pointless discussion for no reason, you are going to "pick" scenes that either depict a logical connection or progression of the story, some important aspects of their personality or relations or to set the scene for the story somehow or have some other purpose of being shown.
      Viewers of art-house cinema might be absolutely thrilled to see a bunch of pointless and boring scenes depicting very ordinary bits of normal life, but for most people the point of a film isn't all meta, but instead, regardless of any another level or moral of the story, etc., existing, there is a front-and-center, surface-level story, for some definition of story, which anchors the message or feeling or whatever in place and makes the movie enjoyable to watch. It also makes it easier to think of and to recognise and to even care about the other levels or aspects, because there is an easier-to-remember structure giving the meta level its life and context.

      I've always thought that when a show is cancelled, especially if its going to be on a cliffhanger, the creators should be allowed to make one more final episode, either normal length or feature length in order to finish off the story. It might not be the ending the creators originally wanted and it may feel rushed but at least it would be an ending of some kind for the fans.

It surprised the producers that fans knew how to make a media buy when even they didn't know how to do it. Eventually a miniseries was made to wrap up the biggest dangling storylines.

    Castle - in which he plays an award winning novelist who works with the NYC police

    One of your questions in your intro was about the good Shepherd's back story. Not having read the subsequent books, I think he was an Operative of the Alliance, like the nameless guy in the movie. I think he was all in, doing whatever was necessary to protect it, because he thought it was good and anyone not loyal to it was crazy or evil. Then he learned or saw something that killed his faith, so he left and turned to religion for comfort.

I then learned about the show, and watched it. Not only did I love the show, but wound up loving the movie, now that I had the show under my belt. Wash and Book were killed because originally, there were supposed to be sequel movies, and they couldn't commit to them, so they were killed off. Ironically, there were never any sequels. Thankfully I think it ends well enough.

    I love that you watched Firefly; that was my first question. A person would need a little background to really appreciate the movie that ended the series. Us fans never wanted it to end. We called and wrote letters and emails and that is why the studio made this movie. - They realized that enough people would show up for it to make lots of money. What they should have done was continue the series, for everyone's best interest. They chose to not do that, but they gave us this last send off. And I loved it. :)

    "Serenity" is a soft reboot of the franchise written for both Firefly fans and newcomers.
    NO SPOILERS - Serenity Questions answered:
    - *Why Book & Wash had to die:*
    Joss Whedon had 3 major story arcs to tell. This Reaver story was planned to end around season 2 of Firefly. When Firefly was canceled, Joss got his second chance with a possible trilogy of movies.
    "Serenity" was the Reaver story arc (arc one). Both actors Ron Glass & Alan Tudyk had other acting obligations after "Serenity". Joss needed a way to explain why they would not appear in the 2nd & 3rd movie. He decided to write their deaths to enhance the drama. Sadly, low box office numbers crushed the chance for a Serenity trilogy.
    - *Why did Inara decide to stay on Firefly?*
    Inara is telling Mal she is ready to explore a romance relationship with him. Why Inara abandoned her career goal of Guild High Priestess, then joined the crew, then left the crew, only to rejoin at the end of Serenity is found in the Firefly novel 'Firefly - Life Signs' (released September 6, 2022).
    - *Shepherd Book's backstory is found in the graphic novel 'Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale'.*
    *I feel the two most important books to answer questions, to flesh out backstories, and to get additional Firefly lore are the following:*
    1) FIREFLY Legacy Deluxe Edition Graphic Novel (1 of 4 deluxe editions currently)
    2) Firefly novel (book 5 of 8 currently) - "Life Signs"
    *KEY COMIC BOOK & NOVEL SPOILERS BELOW:*
    - Zoe was pregnant with Wash's daughter Emma. Jubal Early is still alive. Story found in the 6 issue comic book miniseries 'Serenity: Leaves on the Wind'.
    - 'Firefly - Life Signs' novel takes place between Firefly episode 14 and the movie 'Serenity'. Backstory - Inara quit her pursuit to become the Guild Priestess when she found out she was terminally ill. She joined the crew of Serenity to explore the 'Verse before she died.
    While on Serenity, Inara kept romance at bay with Mal because she was terminally ill. When she found she could no longer hold back Mal's feelings or her own, she left Serenity. Inara was cured of her illness in the novel. Now there are no more excuses to hold off the romance so she stays on Serenity.
    - Shepherd Book's backstory is found in the graphic novel 'Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale'. Book was recruited by the Independents during the war. He was planted as a mole to rise rapidly in the ranks of the Alliance why he secretly spies on them for the Independents.

    We humans never seem to truly appreciate and love our family and friends like we should until we begin to lose some of them. LOSS is a great teacher to those of us able to learn from it. Never withdrawal or withhold your love out of fear of loss or being hurt. Love completely and without limit . That is the only way to truly love and live a life worth living. You will never regret having given all your love to those special people in your journey through this life,but if you try and protect yourself and spare yourself from grieving and heartache,you shall reget that choice for all the days of your life.

The whole time in the theater I was thinking this is a really great story, but it seems like there is a lot of background about the characters that the film assumes I already know. It wasn't until about a month later that I found out that there was a whole TV series called "Firefly" that the movie was based on it. At the same time, I was mad I had not ever heard of this TV show before, and I was also excited that I would get to watch the show and learn the entire story.

    Something to think about ... Now that River's secret has been exposed, what else could River do for the ship and crew ??? She'd have no real value to them (except maybe as a psychic). So, by killing off Wash, which doubles as a way to make the movie very intense, shocking and sorrowful, it sets up a position for River to fill (i.e. a part for her to play). She'd still be able to move into other areas ... later, but this gives her an important role to play NOW, when it's needed. Anyway, captains rarely fly/sail their own ships/boats ... they dole that out to someone devoted to that task, because the captain has other things to do, such as planning their "on planet" missions, communicating with them and potential contacts for jobs, governing the crew, etc. which are very important roles, requiring all of the captain's focus and attention. None of the rest of the crew are pilots, so River, being so gifted is the most obvious choice to get and keep them moving.
    Update/edit: I forgot to mention that the deaths of Shepard Book and Wash were also needed for an unexpected and unrelated reason ... they had gotten other commitments since the show's canceling, and wouldn't have been able to do the show, should a reboot even come about (due to the enthusiasm generated by the movie). They would've had to bring in new actors to fulfill the roles, so killing them added all these elements to the movie that, 1) made it better and 2) provided for a narrative to explain why they wouldn't be returning.

    As someone commented previously, the fact that you instantly saw between the lines when Mal asked Zoe toward the end of the movie after Wash died, "You think she'll hold together?" And Zoe replied "She'll fly true". And you asked out loud if they were talking about Serenity or Zoe shows how brilliant and observant you are Dasha. Many reactors have completely missed the relevance of this phrase and I think it's one of the best phrases in the whole series because of the double meaning. You understood it immediately and yes, the writers meant for us to look it that line in both ways.

    I know there is an actual story, but when I first saw the movie, I assumed Book's past was reflected in the Operative. Not literally, but Book was an Operative that got confronted by a situation that shook his faith. After which he went to an abbey, both as repentance and a way to regain faith in something.

    This tv series had so much potential. There was talk about a reboot, but I don’t believe it’s in the works anymore. Have you ever looked at both the original Battlestar Galactica and its awesome reboot? The original came out in 1978 and the reboot came out in 2004. The original is nostalgic for many people and the reboot definitely has a more refined storyline and special effects with complex and sometimes heart wrenching character arches. Both series are awesome.

    Funny story about Firefly and Christmas:
    My Dad and I loved this series. For Christmas I bought him Firefly on Blu-ray. Christmas morning we're unwrapping presents and we both open the gifts from eachother at the same time. As i tear the gift wrap i panic, look up to see my dads panicked face looking at me: we both got eachother Firefly on Blu-ray and thought we somehow accidentally opened our own gifts to eachother. It was a good laugh.
    The movie was disappointing... it rushed what could've been stretched out for multiple seasons and crammed it into a singular movie to the best of their abilities. Better than no closure for sure, but not nearly as good as the series was because of the time constraints and trying to tell the rest of the series in a single movie.

    I saw Serenity in the theater back in 2005 - before I watched any of the TV series. It was a matinee and there were only a few other people there. After watching it, I was flabbergasted that nobody I knew was talking about it. I thought it was excellent but other than Firefly fans, nobody seemed interested. It was a tragic flop.
    If you go back to that time's release, a movie called "Flightplan" was at the #1 spot. It is clear that this was a major injustice. Which movie actually held up? I've never even seen Flightplan, nor has any reaction channel I follow ever actually reacted to it. Serenity, however, continues to get reactions all over TH-cam - and everyone loves it.

    Nathan Fillion's bruises in the final boss fight are real. He did so many takes to get the fight seen just right that his face and eye were bruised. Wash & Shepard were killed off because the actors could not guarantee they would be free in the future for another TV show or movie. Imagine if we had five seasons of Firefly.

    The producers wanted to sign the cast to a multi-film deal, just in case. Alan Tudyk and Ron Glass couldn't commit that potential scheduling, so Whedon killed their characters off. The deaths caused the audience to question whether anyone would survive.

      How do you clear out a room full of Reavers? You run a River through it.

    • @Theomite
      @Theomite 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's a nice theory, but based on how long the Reavers had been around and STILL be an urban legend, my guess is that whatever erasures the Alliance used were working. The show let us know that the Alliance, despite being in charge, were still up to unsavory things of unknown purpose. So River was probably just part of another program to upgrade the Alliance's paranoid stranglehold on their empire.

    • @rowaystarco
      @rowaystarco 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      One would assume that any country and empire would study and research people showing psychic powers, the problem is that The Alliance (or at least supported by some groups in parliament) did it in a horrible and evil way. I'm not really sure if The Alliance is completely evil as we usually view them from the perspective of their enemy. We clearly see there's some pretty horrible stuff going on on the less "civilized" planets/moons. Let's not forget that the browncoats are based on the Confederation from the US civil war.
      I like that we get to see that neither of the two sides are all evil or all good

    Hi Dasha. hope you're well. Without offence please but finally at last you're watching one of the best (in my opinion of course 😊) Scifi movies ever ever made based on one of the best scifi series ever ever made. you may not understand how angry. frustrated and depressing it was to find out that Joss Wheedon was only doing a single series of Firefly. Fans were outraged all over the world. Firefly was able to create and depict such a detailed and believable dystopian future that was just so engaging and well written. Serenity came about as JW wanted to complete the story (to some extent) and give the fans some sort of compensation for the cancellation of Firefly. it turned out to more than we could have ever wanted and is as previously stated, one of the best scifi movies ever made. The characters are so well individually acted and knitted together and you get every one of them. who why and where they are (even Jane😅) 10/10 every day
