She was such a breath of fresh air back then. While everybody in Metal was trying to be dark and tough or suffering, watching her live was like seeing a little girl jumping around in her bedroom to her favourite songs. Such a pure joy of music.

The voice of Anneke van Giersbergen is very similar to the Alternative Rock of that time, I prefer the voices of the bands Theater of tragedy and their album "Aegis" and with Tristania "Beyond The Veil". regards

tG is the kind of music that completely transports you to another reality, a much purer one but also very melancholic and painful, like an eternal autumn... they will always be the greatest band for me.

I can't help but feel hypnotized every time I watch this video. She's so ethereal, so charismatic that makes you feel kinda happy inside, those blue eyes, her movements... Can't avoid falling in a trance. And in love.
I miss this era of The Gathering so much it hurts. I had the pleasure of seeing them live when they were still writing music in the style of Mandylion. It was an extremely small venue and it was amazing to see the band up close.

It's amazing how atmosferic beautiful and different is the 90s' Gothic/Doom Metal from the Netherlands.

I am 36 years old and I remember it must have been around late 1995 or early 1996 , I was watching headbangers ball on MTV and this track was beyond genius, Mandylion -1995- the album is a masterpiece of a record, wow how time flies.

Arguably the most underrated band in the 1990s and easily the most underrated female vocalist in metal and probably the best female vocalist when it comes to clean vocals.
I don't think you know what underrated means. There was literally no metal head back in the 90s who didn't accept her and became obsessed with her at the same time. And then suddenly all the girls hanging out with metalheads were trying to be the Anneke of the group. That's not "underrated".
@@palonazo she was relatively unknown in the 1990s in the USA so therefore she is very underrated. Outside of northern Europe not too many people heard or knew of The Gathering and Anneke van Giersbergen. High speed internet in the late 2000s and later significantly brought more fans for this band which unfortunately by the time I discovered this band as have many people from the internet, Anneke parted ways with the Gathering.

Yes the metal world doesn't revolve around the USA but not having the USA with a population of about 300 million hurts alot if you can't get that potential fan base. So I stand by my statement that with not many Americans knowing of Anneke and the Gathering pre high speed internet and with them being such a talented band with very little knowledge of metal fans in the USA not knowing anything about the Gathering therefore makes them overall a very underrated band. A population that high is a significant potential for metal bands in Europe and elsewhere to want to get into having an increase presence in metal for making sales, touring and money. The USA with all of its cities, large population etc makes metal bands want this market.

I love the Album/CD 'Always' by The GATHERING a lot. It is still one of my favorite gothic death metal Albums/CDs even to this day. That being said, what Anneke van Giersbergen did in taking The GATHERING to a new place is amazing! 'Mandylion' 'Night time Birds' were very cool Album/CDs, but it was 'HOW TO MEASURE A PLANET' that made her a LEGEND. Of course I still love 'Leaves'. It is still one of my favorite Anneke songs ever even now.

I remember when Mandylion was relesead 20 year ago....it was awesome! We never heard something like The Gathering before....and Anneke with her absolutely beatiful voice, face and blue eyes was something so incredible lovely to get with....impossible to resist. And this song brings me so good memories when I was a teenager living with my parents and discovering heavy metal....great days they were....
just bought this album after hearing and loving Anneke's The Darkest Skies are the brightest, love, love,love her voice, maybe back then I didn't I don't know. So excited to find her now. love what I have heard so far.

What's incredible is that this was mid 90's and I never heard of it back then. Only just a few years ago I listened to a song of theirs in a compilation CD with other bands and I was vacationing in Brazil. So if it hadn't been for going there, I don't think I would know about The Gathering. Some of the best female vocals I've ever heard.

I remember when I fell in love with Anneke, back in 1996... I was young and could not imagine what was to come. The Gathering's art and Anneke's voice have been with me throughout all that has happened since then. Today I still think she was/ is beautiful, but in a "respectful" way, for she's a mom and a wife.
