  • www.crosstrainingenduro.com tractionerag.com We said it before, we'll say it again. It's more about the rider than the bike. Put an A grade rider on any old plodder and they will whip the ass of an average rider on the latest and greatest. Extensive testing by Traction e Rag proves it is 80 percent the rider, only 20% the bike. Allowing for variables such as the size of your genitals and your beer intake. And keeping in mind those old bikes are often crazy fast. Our comprehensive testing covers the stupidly fast and modern CRF250RX, then the half as powerful CRF250F. We also include a blast from the past, this XR200. And finally the pint sized pocket rocket, the Honda CRF150F.
Our test track? The Megatron, designed by our test rider, the pint-sized pocket rocket Megs Braap. Our chase rider chasing the Honda CRF150F? The fumbling gumby himself, Barry Morris. Lets see if that dirt muppet can keep up.
None of us think Megs will get a good lap time on the Honda CRF150F. If she finishes at all on the Megatron race track. She has never ridden this tiny bike before. She only rides a two stroke 300 normally. This little Honda has almost super soft suspension. Very little suspension. There is no rear brake because the lever is too low. But even with all those handicaps I have trouble keeping up with a much better bike and well more than double the horsepower of the Honda CRF150F. It's all very embarrassing. This is just a few snapshots from the longer supporters vid of the Megatron race track. Megs discusses her Honda CRF150F lap with her mechanic, then we do another lap from my perspective and check out Meg's riding style more, and compare lap times with other bikes. Get into it. Okay, lets do that again but from my perspective. It was amazing how little difference power made on this Megatron race track with the Honda CRF150F, most of the time I was working hard to stay with Megs on the Honda CRF250RX. And if it wasn't for a few mistakes I doubt I would have kept up with her. And all those mistakes were from having no rear brake. On this straight I can't believe how fast she accelerates with less than 15hp from the Honda CRF150F. I have heard people say anything over 20hp is just wheelspin with the Honda CRF250RX. That isn't always true but on this tight track it shows that ability is much more important than outright power. Damn look at her go! This really is quite humiliating. If the rear brake was set up properly on the Honda CRF150F and Megs had a few practice laps to get used to the little 150 there is no way I would keep up with her. Doh into neutral on the Honda CRF250RX and Megs shoots ahead. Thankfully Megs is a gear too high here and the little 150 bogs down and I can catch up again. I think Megs is just starting to come to grips with tiny bike now and she pulls ahead. This is ridiculous, I should catch her straight away on this more open section but it takes ages to reel her in again. Now it's into the tight flat corners, lets see if I can stay with her. Megs pushes a fraction too hard on these corners and slips more than planned. That short wheelbase and tiny wheels make the 150 quite unstable when the rear slides out on the Megatron race track. Lets have a quick look at lap times compared to the Honda CRF250RX. Given all the handicaps, this lap on the 150 was the slowest but not by much. Megs was only 10 seconds faster on the XR200 and CRF250F. And about 25 seconds faster on her own bike and the powerful CRF250RX.

I've said in past videos that disconnecting the brake is a good way to make yourself a faster rider. This just proves the point.

I was once riding around a MX track, getting pretty confident with my skills as i was able to pull in any of the other weekend warriors
Until a rider comes on the track and just inhaliated me, enough for me & everyone else to sit and watch him do a couple laps
He eventually gets off and takes off his helmet, to my suprise he is an older man in his 50s
I asked him on how i can improve and what he said was just that "Don't touch the brakes throughout the track and gain more speed each lap"

Yeah but what kind of tires was she using and how often has the oil been changed? By the way the bike was handling I'd say there was 10.4 to 10.9 psi in the tires. For that terrain I'd recommend 10.25 psi. LOL

    • @crosstrainingenduro

Wang Chang knobbies. Oil changes every fourth gear change. Air pressure adjusted halfway up each hill to maintain consistency with barometric pressure.

Its probably more than 80% , perhaps
    90%, however, Jarvis on a 2T 300 would
always beat Jarvis on a CRF250F. You can
learn serious skills on just about anything,
its so very worthwhile to ride anything you
can afford, vs waiting till you have that perfect bike.
To advance and compete you won't
cut it on a Honda 90 or TW200 in hard enduro,
but so many other bikes will work.
A lot of us love to learn and talk about different bike models,
that's why I love to hear CTE discussing and pointing out
lots of different bike models in their travels.
Just about any bike will work for starting out, a bike, and
a generous stable of Clint Eastwood Quotes will keep you
satisfied, alive and well, out on the trail.
