Many people say that "all Greek islands look the same" but that's just pure naivety. All these islands you've been recently have their own charm and uniqueness. Definitely a must visit if you're passionate about ancient history. Greece isn't just a sun&beach tourism destination as many ignorants claim it to be. Thanks for the video, Gabe.

And 83% of the country is a peninsula with a long coastline. I've come to really hate the word "islands", lol. It's just arbitrary which beach or lovely coastal town is on an island and which beaches or lovely coastal town is on the peninsula.
Gabe, you got us Greeks going, lol! 😊

Greek Climate, Sun, Food, beaches, hospitality and many more, are some of the best in the world . Gabreil isn't coming back again and again, for no reason!! Best quality Wine,Olive Oil and best water to drink in Europe, easily some of the best in the World, without exagurating. Tourists don't have the luxury to taste those qualities, because they usualy choose touristic places where everything is much inferior (due to the high taxes and busines owners greedines)

@@greekveteran2715 Very touristy places are expensive because of supply and demand. It's simple economics. Please stop calling Greeks "greedy". If you had a skill that was in high demand, you'd look for a higher paying job. Raising prices in Santorini is the right thing to do. They can't build endless hotels, plumbing, sewage systems, etc, and turn Santorini into Hong Kong.

    Hi Gabriel.
In part 1 of your visit to Skyros, you mentioned that you had visited a ghost town in Turkey, Kayakoy. Kayakoy was an old Greek city called Livisi. Its port was Makri, today's Fethiye. When you visited Marathon, the town you passed through to get to Marathon is called Nea Makri and it also has the Livisi area. With the Asia Minor disaster in 1922 the inhabitants of the two cities in Turkey settled in the Marathon Bay area.

Imbros & Tenedos were given to turkey to protect the straights. They were originally supposed to have a Semi-Autonomous status since the majority of the Population has been Greek since Antiquity. From my understanding, the turks used them as mostly as Prisons, which along with the lack of respect for their special Autonomous status which was supposed to protect the Human Rights of its Greek Citizens prompted many of the Greek inhabitants to slowly move out. There was a huge Greek Population in Constantinople up until recently as well, which was also had a special protected status according to the Treat of Lausanne, but the pogroms conducted by the turks in the 50’s has slowly made it dwindle to just a few hundred. Practically ending the Multi Millennium presence of the Greeks in these regions.

Samothrace is the most unique island in the northern Asgean imo. Lots of hiking and climbing opportunities there plus it was the site of the Cabeirian mysteries in antiquity and the sanctuary of the Great Gods. The statue of Nike of Samothrace was found there and it is now in the Louvre

Hi Gabriel, it doesn't get any quieter, very peaceful and relaxing. Greece being a sizeable country has a small population compared to its European neighbors which I find surprising. Traveling to the Greek Islands is a big part of Greece there is the rural lifestyle of how people lived for thousands of years and continue to live. I see many of these homes as retreats from the mainland, especially now where they're very accessible.

    • @apmoy70
      @apmoy70 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Well unfortunately the mainland is all mountains, we're one of the most mountainous countries in Europe, check a geophysics map and you'll see that the only plains in the country are Thessaly (the bread basket of Greece), Attica (the region where Athens is located), the Vardar/Axios valley in Thessaloniki, and a few valleys in the Peloponnese. That's why almost all of the Greek population is located on these areas. Until the proliferation of air travel, it was much more easier to take a ship and sail from Athens (Piraeus) to Crete, than travel by land from Athens to the Epirotan capital, Ioannina

Gabriel, it's high time you travelled to North Aegean. The islands of this complex have their own distinctive beauty. An ideal port to start this trip is Kavala, as all but Samothrace are connected to it. For Samothrace, you would need to take the boat from Alexandroupolis. (not sure if the ferry Lemnos-Samothrace still operates). If you happen to be close to Kavala, a visit at Nestos River Straits is a must.
There are still Greeks living in Imbros (minority), because the Greek population of Imbros, Tenedos and Istanbul along with the Muslim population of Western Thrace were excluded from the population exchange.

My favourite greek islands are Lefkada, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Crete[big island, many options], Rhodes, Alonissos,Skopelos, Skiathos, Thasos, Ithaki. And there are some small ones which are gems for me. For examble the are some near Lefkada. From Cyclades maybe a bit Naxos and Syros[for chora's architecture]. Tinos is the most religious island. Myconos is just an average island, just for the wealth, and a bit overated. edit:ahh i also keen on Paros and Antiparos a bit. I like a bit Santorini as well but mainly for its sunset and the fact that its a vlocano, so for 2,3 days its ok for me. I like many beaches in Chalkidiki as well [it has many sandy ones] but its not island.

Islands of the Cyclades region can certainly all start looking a bit the same, with the whitewashed buildings and white outlined paved laneways. Other island regions can look very different. As an example, Lesvos island architecture is characterised by homes built from local stone, with tiled roofs and often a second story wooden construction called Sachnisi. The 18th and 19th-century mansions of the capital Mytilene are influenced by the Neoclassical and baroque style. Being so close to Turkey you see a lot of it's influence such as the Ottoman constructions Valide Mosque and the Yeni Mosque.

I have read, that only 6 % of the Greek population live on the islands. Crete not included.
Public service, infrastructure like roads, electric and water supply, internet and so on are much less developed than on the main land. Not to mention education and health care.
Tax evasion is rife on the islands, and on many of the smaller islands with little tourism people live in a kind of hilly billy existence.
Perhaps this seems romantic and close to mother earth for some, suffocating for others.
This has resulted in the mass exodus from many of the islands after WW2.
Tourism has rectified this in the summer months, often in an artificial way.
Less touristy, big islands like Lesbos, Chios and Limnos have survived quite well and have kept their population and managed to maintain livable conditions for the inhabitants.

ADDITIONAL NOTE, since you also mentioned Imvros and Tenedos
When the Greeks built the Trojan Horse and left from Troy, they went hiding behind a nearby island .....at night they returned and burned Troy .......the island they were hiding behind, was Tenedos
The 1923 exchange of population was not based on ethnicity but on religion ......Christians went one way, Muslims went the other way .......regardless of ethnicity .......but part of the agreement was also to keep 120k Muslims in northern Greece and 120k Christians in Constantinople .......the 120k Muslims still live in reservations in northern Greece but the 120k Christians of Constantinople have been reduced to about 2k after the taxation of 1942 (Varlık Vergisi), the Istanbul Pogrom of 1955, and the deportations of 1965 and 1975

There are the Ionian islands (the most beautiful beaches are in those islands, the nature too of course generally), there are Sporades, there is Thassos etc, there are the Cyclades etc. So, no, every Greek island do not look the same, since the first mentioned ones are greener, forest-like, architecture different (as culture is different, different tribes) while the Cyclades and all other islands in southern Greece are more dry and more stone-like.

The exchange of populations was based on religion only, so you had Greek speaking Muslims, who spoke no Turkish at all (called Vallahades) moving to Turkey, and Turkish speaking Orthodox Christians (called Karamanlides) who spoke only Turkish, moving to Greece. Of course there were approx. 1.5 mil of bilingual Orthodox Christians & a slightly lower number of bilingual Muslims leaving for Greece or Turkey respectively

Thank you Gabriel. 🙂 Every region in Greece very different. Cyclades, Crete, Ionian Islands, Dodecanese, Peloponnese, Epirus, Macedonia, etc, whether the region is peninsular (Peloponnese, Epirus), a contiguous island (Crete), or broken into pieces (Cyclades). This is why foreigners need to stop thinking in terms if "islands". Nantucket doesn't have more in common woth Key West than with Cape Cod, just because Key West is an island. Likewise, Nantucket isnt going to be radically different from Marha's Vineyard, just because they're different "islands"... you're still in New England, let alone Massachusetts. 🙂
