    This video is "out of focus," I did not have the best camera or the best camera skills at the time back in 2017...

    The blood groove is not a blood groove at all, it is a fuller and is done to make the blade a bit lighter and, believe it or not, it actually makes the blade a little stronger in the area.

    A reduced full tang is not a RATTAIL j ust head on over to NEWYORK USA where there is about one rat for every 2 or 4 humanoids. Go to their high end food dispensories and peek thru the gate out back. Those cat size critters are packing what the locals call a RAT TAIL. Imho.

    I'm former U.S. military, and have the Dog's Head version because the cross guard is 1) heavier, and 2) shorter along the top of the blade for a sabre, fighting hand grip - (Col. Rex Applegate US Army & Col. W.E. Fairbairn GB.) I've read quite a bit that these knives don't hold up to bushcraft "batoning". Perhaps not... That's not something I plan on doing on a regular basis. Should I need to, I'll get a Mora...

    The United States Marine Corp was the first to adopt this knife, doing so in 1943. The same basic design was issued by other branches of the U.S. military, manufactured by Ka-Bar or Camillus.

    Just learned of the Dogs Head version...love it! Wanted the fighting knife, but didn't feel right carrying the USMC or Army version because I'm not a vet. I think I actually prefer the pommel on the Dog better anyway. Just ordered one from SMKW.

    The Dogs head is awesome ....ya missed the biggest difference, the top guard is gone on the DH making carving way more comfortable.

    I do not like the guard and pommel on the dog head knife. Were I to purchase one, I’d put the usmc guard and pommel on the dog head blade.

    The 1217 is better balanced, in my humble opinion. I don't like that big pommel on the Dog's Head. I didn't like it on their Next Generation knives either.

    Take a standard Kabar or Camillus and remove the top guard with a hack saw / leaving 1/4 inch for guard strength on the blade . Cold grind a choil in front of the bottom guard .
    This is what most U.S Army Rangers did (Me) when they were issued the Camillus combat knife or purchased the Kabar .
    A double guard is meant to block or deflect an opponents blade = Something most soldiers will ever encounter . Dump the top guard so you can "over grip" and do fine work . A guy who used to write for Tactical Knives magazine - Named Karwin wrote an article regarding modifications to an existing Kabar combat knife - removing the top guard and drilling a hole through the butt cap / pommel for a lanyard .
    Karwins modification became know as the "Karbar" in 1985 .
    The U.S. Army Rangers and Special Forces were doing this modification back in the 60s' and 70s' ... long before Chuck Karwins ideas .
    The "dogs head " Kabar is based on the input from combat veterans who actually used the Kabar blade on a day to day basis .
    Think of the Kabar as a butcher knife / camp knife / combat knife . To this day , they are still one of the premier survival blades . The "blood groove " is worthless , but the 1095 steel is excellent . Thanks Jolly Peanut for your input .

    Too bad your camera can't focus! Or is it set to fixed focus? Can't see a thing up close...
    But that gun is sweeeet... I wish we could buy guns here in the EU. EU sucks in that respect, big time!

    • @JollyPeanut
      @JollyPeanut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I could not tell if the cam was focusing or not, I need a better camera....I thought you could have firearms in the EU I guess it depends where you are...

    • @silvanigra
      @silvanigra 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In some countries it's easier to get a hunting rifle, for instance, such as Spain or France, but not where I live (Romania, duh!).
      At some point, I was considering moving to the US only to be able to collect firearms, but then found out that one first needs to become a citizen to get a license/permit :)

    • @JollyPeanut
      @JollyPeanut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well if you do decide to move to the US you will be pleased to know that to buy firearms you do not need to be a citizen. As long as you have a Green Card you can buy guns. Anyone legally living in the US can buy guns no license or permit required.

    • @silvanigra
      @silvanigra 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for that info, this is totally new to me. It's good to know and I'll have to look into it, particularly in regard to eligibility for a green card.
      The perspective of relocating to the US is exciting, including for my two kids who speak pretty good English.
      Do you happen to know of any resources/websites that can offer consultation in this matter?

    • @JollyPeanut
      @JollyPeanut  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found youtube very helpful lots of info on ways to get a green card...Study these well as you have to stick with the route you choose ie marriage to US citizen or work visa or whatever, some ways are quicker than others but they all take a long time.....Also check out this link all the official info is here...Good Luck.. www.uscis.gov/

    Say Heah Jolly, yeah, I have the Ka-Bar U. S. M. C. infact I also have sone vintage W. W. 2 versions, which in my opinion ate better made, I even have one made by Camillus. But that Master Hunter is also one of my Fav's, mines in 3V. I also teamed my with my Fox Bushcraft Parang Jungle Knife, a good matching combo that complements eachother, But my plinker is a bit larger and shoots. .45 LC or. .410 it's my Cherokee Super Single Pistol, I holster it in a M-1 Scabbard but I can wear it like a holster. Hello. I will be very grateful to you if you answer my question. I have my ka-bar usmc with me and I found that the handle was a bit shriveled due to dryness. It so happens that I have nothing but gun neutral oil. Can it be used to refresh leather on the handle? Will neutral gun oil harm the skin?
