One hell of a blade and a lot of history behind it.
THIS is for sure one of the best fighting / Utility blades that we came across.

Hey Mike, great video and great knife! I've been using the Ka bar USMC for 30 years (including 4 years in the U.S. Paratroopers as an infantryman) and it has never let me down. Trust me when I say that in combat and field training knives get rough treatment. Just use a file to sharpen the false edge enough to expose a thin edge of steel and it works great with the fire steel. This way you won't have to remove the protective coating from the entire spine. Back in my days Ka bars used to come with the false edge sharpened from the factory but not anymore. It only takes two minutes with a file and its done. Thanks for the great video!!

I have read all the comments and let me just throw out to all of you guys who buy or own several knives that some people make do with one or two. Of course the Ka-Bar was not made for campers or bushmen and women, it was designed for soldiers who might have to dig holes, cut a few branches, rope, pry open boxes or wooden crates and other tasks and also use it to fight. This is understood and common knowledge. Despite that, it's still issued today and used even for outdoor survival training.
So I think it's fine to carry it and make use of it when appropriate. Same applies to other blades. Better to use them than let them rust away unused in a drawer or closet. Doesn't everybody carry more than one knife nowadays anyway?

Great review, Mike. I've had my Ka-Bar for 11 years and of all the knives I have, if the going gets tough this is the knife I want by my side. The synthetic handle and sheath are a real plus.

Great video and review ! I like that you tested it w\ the actual primary uses it will face. Not smashing it w\ rocks or doing a 'tip test' . You kept it real. Thanks.
Also enjoyed the sound bed. Such a serious undertone as if to say; this is the real thing. The still shots of the forest added an ominous quality to it!

I only have 3 knives anymore. A Benchmade 940 edc, a full sized kabar and a mini kabar. Others knives have come and go, but I haven't really felt attached to any others. Best part about the kabar is that when a friend stole my last one and disappeared, it was only around $60 for a new one. No reason not to have one.

The KA BAR is an Awsome knife and has an Awsome story about how they started making them.
The buck 119 is another Awsome knife I think you would also like. The Bowie shape blades started in 1700s. To this day it has been in allmost all of the fixed blade knives. Thanks for sharing and buying one of our knives. God bless 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

Thanks for the great review Mike. I've been watching your channel for a while now via Lilly's YTC and now I'm a subscriber! I'm looking at buying this knife for my wife as she has shown interest in it. I like the way it chopped through that pine with ease and even though it won't strike a ferro-rod, they usually have decent strikers with them (we buy Light My Fire's). Keep up the great work Sir!

Kabar Large Heavy Bowie is my go to knife. I like the USMC, BK2 as well, but find them both limited in application here in northern Canada. Still never to be found without my Mora Robust on me, regardless of what other knife I carry. That's my personal preference though.

👍 Good video reviewing this knife. I had an original version with the stacked leather handle that I modified by removing the top portion of the guard and squaring off the spin. It worked very well as a camp knife. I recently purchased the version with D2 steel and the kratan handle. It has no top guard, but still needs the spin squared off. I have not been this newer version to use, but will shortly. These are very good knives. Thank you for your review.

Id rather have it because you can direct the blade in the flesh clean cuts like no other knife i have used. If there was someone sitting in front me with a famas assault rifle pointed at my head. id rather still have the ka-bar.

Thanks for the review Mike. Very nice knife and the sheath looks very good.
If I may add a few thoughts on it (I have the 1217, the same knife with leather handle and sheath) :
I like it a lot and recommend anyone to try it but for bushcraft I have a few remarks :
blade : long and thin, pretty light and effective but the clip point is not so good. (again for wood tasks, it's awesome for piercing though) , when battoning it chews the batton and sometimes when I use the tip of the blade for precision work , I like tu push the spine with my thumb ... with this very thin spine it really hurts after a few minutes.
The coating is not that good (I only have my ESEEs as comparison), the coating on mine was worn off the blade with use. So I took off what was left of it with some sandpaper.
Just removing that coating allowed me to strike a firesteel very easily :) you don't need to file it juste sand it a bit to remove the coating.
That's the only complains I have about it. otherwise it's pretty tough, easy to sharpen, cuts really well with a pretty good edge retention. For the money I cannot say anything but to recommend it =) Thanks to you I'll take it out of it's drawer and use it in the woods today =)
Thanks again for all your videos, very interesting. Have a nice day. Guillaume

Say Heah Mike, I have my Ka-Bar's now for a long time now. I've been playing around with knives in the bush for a few 24's now. Even though my Ka-Bar Set which is my MK-1 and it's big brother the Ka-Bar U.S.M.C. knife isn't my Fav's, I really like taking them out into the bush, I keep them very sharp and even though now you could see the love marks on them from hard use, their still in great shape, and they continue to work just great. Both my MK-1 are over 15 years old, and the leather handles aged gracefully, the sheath's are leather too and actually of good quality, they just don't make them as they use to. I don't carry both of them on person, but I do take both of them out together. With this set I also like taking the Estwing Sportmans Hatchet with the leather handle, I like matching my gear that way even with my other knives too. I also take my Fiskar wooden handle saw because it's neutral, but this particular set is great to use in the bush. It's a little Tactical but the knives work real good for what I use them in the bush..I like practicing survival even when I just go out for a hot cup of coffee on the open fire and a baked potato, not only is it better than going to Mc'Dee's, but I practice at the same time. Today I'm out again with my friends and I'm going to sleep. But since I brought my Ka-Bar Set and I also have other Ka-Bar Set's like my BK's that I grouped into nice sets like for instance my BK-10 and BK-9 and so on and also by other knife companies, I have to say, my Swamp Rat and Busse Combat top my list. But I also took my Fallkniven A-1 and I paired it off with a Cold Steel Mini Pendleton, I also like bringing my Victorninox Delemont Collection Ranger Grip 78 because of its 4" blade and saw and also easy to match and pair with other knives, I recently was enjoying my Ka-Bar Johnson Adventure Potbelly with the Top's Mini Scandi 2.5. Anyhow, Yeah I have my Ka-Bar's too and sort of use the Ka-Bar Set more than my Fallkniven A-1 and the Mini Pendleton. I'm very surprised how good of a bushcraft knife my leather handle MK-1, The glossy coating is wearing off but it still looks solid and in excellent shape, Their not that expensive but their very good knives, I really like my combination and I can do alot of things that I practice to improve my survival in the bush, Yeah that 5" blade is a great thin bushcraft knife that complements the 7" big brother the Ka-Bar U.S.M.C. Knife. I'm sure the new MK-1 also comes with that Nader handle, it's a great knife and that surprises me that more people don't use it for vushcraft. Thanx for a good video, I enjoyed it, and maybe down tge line up - date my set with the new knives. I can't see how Ka-Bar could improve a already great set.

sergio sanchez mora Blades are better for fine carving due to the grind and the Thin Blade. However the kabar is a workhorse. More of an Allround Type of Knife that does Everything.
      With that it's lightweight too.
I Really Love the kabar as an Outdoor Knife.

  • @brianking5003
    @brianking5003 5 ปีที่แล้ว

educational point: full tang is a blade thickness all the way to the and through , that is what is called a fixed blade only knife, not full tang. full tang has hadles on both siders, a fixed blade is slid down through a handle .

  • @paulie4x1
    @paulie4x1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Just imagine Mike if you add the MK-1 to your knife how much more versital that would be, World of caution, If you get a smaller knife make sure it's the MK-1 because it has a thinner blade and it's a full grind so it slices thinner that the Ka-Bar Short 5 " Knife. I like the MK-1 for bush craft.

Yes, they do. Not terribly but they do dull the edge. When going for the traditional Kabar USMC I've always stuck with the leather stacked handles and leather sheaths.
I would only go for the synthetic handle and plastic sheath if I planned on being around a lot of salt water all the time.

This question comes up every 8 months or so. The blood groove on a knife probably is derived from the channel present on swords, where it is called a "fuller". There are some persistent myths floating around about the function of blood grooves, from "releases the vacuum when the knife is thrust into a person" to "no functional use, purely decorative". Let's talk about these wrong answers first, before we talk about the right answers.
Wrong Answer #1: Releasing the Body Suction
Basically, this theory postulates that the blood groove is present to facilitate withdrawing the knife from a person/animal. In this scenario, it is said that the animal's muscles contract around the knife blade, and that this causes a vacuum, which makes the knife difficult to withdraw. But on a knife with a blood groove, blood runs through the blood groove and breaks the suction, so the knife can be withdrawn with less difficulty.
One problem is that there's no evidence that this suction ever really happens. Also, over and over again people report that there is no difference whatsoever in the difficulty of withdrawing a knife with a blood groove vs. one without. This is one theory that has been tested and found wanting.
Yes, I realize you may have heard this myth from your deadly knife instructor, or read it in a book somewhere. But the experts agree that it is false. If your knife can cut its way in, it can just as easily cut its way out, with or without a blood groove.
And with that, I am going to change terminology from "blood groove" to "fuller", since we all now know the so-called "blood groove" is not playing a blood-channeling function.
      Wrong Answer #2: Purely Decorative
There is a grain of truth to this one. Although a fuller does play a functional role, on a short knife the effect might be so small as to be insignificant. Many believe the fuller plays a strictly decorative role on knives or swords under 2 feet long. As the knife or sword gets bigger, the fuller plays an increasingly important role. On smaller knives, it is indeed probably just decorative.
      Right Answers:
Okay, so what substantive role does the blood groove/fuller play? The bottom line is, it does two things:
      1. It stiffens the blade 2. It lightens the blade
That first statment has been the subject of some controversy, with some people sending me equations purporting to show that the removal of material cannot make the blade stiffer. I will table for now the question of "does the blade get stiffer, in some absolute sense, due to the fuller?" Rather, I'll weaken the claim to say that the blade *feels* stiffer to the user who is waving it around -- because it's stiffer for its weight.
I'll reproduce a post by Jim Hrisoulas which lays things out clearly (re-printed with permission):
When you fuller a blade you do several things:
1: You lighten it by using less material, as the act of forging in the fuller actually widens the blade, so you use less material than you would if you forged an unfullered blade. (In stock removal the blade would also be lighter, as you would be removing the material instead of leaving it there).
2: You stiffen the blade. In an unfullered blade, you only have a "single" center spine. This is especially true in terms of the flattened diamond cross section common to most unfullered double- edged blades. This cross section would be rather "whippy" on a blade that is close to three feet long. Fullering produces two "spines" on the blade, one on each side of the fuller where the edge bevels come in contact with the fuller. This stiffens the blade, and the difference between a non-fullered blade and a fullered one is quite remarkable.
Fullers on knives do the same thing, although on a smaller blade the effects are not as easily seen or felt. Actually looking at fullers from an engineering point of view they really are a sophisticated forging technique, and it was the fullered swordblade that pointed the way to modern "I" beam construction.
When combined with proper distal tapers, proper heat treating and tempering, a fullered blade will, without a doubt, be anywhere from 20% to 35% lighter than a non-fullered blade without any sacrifice of strength or blade integrity.
Fullers were not "blood grooves" or there to "break the suction" or for some other grisly purpose. They served a very important structural function. That's all. I have spent the last 27 years studying this and I can prove it beyond any doubt...

It's a fuller, used on many knives and swords to reduce weight without affecting strength too much.

I prefer the straight edge for bush craft and camping. The serrations do help if cutting para cord or rope but the straight edge can do that just fine too but also offers better control when using on wood as you can carve closer to the handle instead of further up the blade.

Misleading. This is an excellent knife with decades of proven performance in a *combat* setting. This is a combat knife. This is *not* a bushcraft or survival knife. Between a rat tail tang (no, it is not a full tang knife), and only 0.165 inch blade thickness, this knife can break when exposed to the pressures and torques of bushcraft that it was not designed for. Yes, it can handle the dinky little feathering and stick splitting shown in this video. Any knife can do that. But once you expose this knife to the harder side of bushcraft, do not be surprised when it breaks. I speak from experience here. You've been warned.

***** Absolutely. Since it has basically no elements in the pure alloy to form carbides (traditional 1095 has no chromium, vanadium, niobium, molybdenum or tungsten), that makes the heat treatment that much more imperative. I think the bad heat treatment due to mass production is also sort of inherent in its history; the knife was the standard issue for almost the entire US military for decades, so it was always a result of mass production. Totally agree. Esee also has a lot better structural geometry for bushcraft.

    • @JeepJeep234

Rick1885 I will second that. I have the 1213, 1245 tanto, 1271 black fighter, and I haven't been able to break any of them. And honestly unless you try to pound the shit out of it on the spine like you would a full tang bk9 or esee junglas, this knife will never break performing its intended use. You don't need to cut huge logs for firewood if your in any "survival" situation because it would be a waste of calories and would be risking breaking your cutting tool, and if you truly need to just take small pieces off at a time.

Rick1885 agreed. I abused mine for years. Used it to chop wood, used it as a throwing knife, even pounded nails in with the butt. It is by far my favorite knife I've ever owned... my dad has one that he has owned for over 50 years, and it is still sharp and sturdy. I just recently lost mine on a hike. And plan on getting a new one.

Cooldibs Foliage green is like 90% grey.

    • @G1NZOU
      @G1NZOU 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Cooldibs Foliage green is the US Army's green for gear to match UCP camo, it's mostly grey with a little green. Now that they've switched to OCP most gear is either Coyote brown now or Tan 499.
Like MrAmerican says greys tend to blend well so greenish greys perform well in woodland environments, Germans used to use a similar colour back in WWII.
UCP is quite a bad camo, but not because it's grey, it's because it doesn't have enough macro pattern or enough contrast between colours, so at a distance soldiers end up as very bright grey silhouettes.
