FAQ: there is ZERO air-traffic over the south pole. The streaks you can see are for the most part satellites on polar orbits.

@@sktirkid Im pretty sure that's because some satellites (like the ISS) can be really bright, up to -5 apparent magnitude (that's brighter than venus!). Also, considering this was taken at the south pole, you can probably see a lot of satellites because even though it's night, the sun isn't that low (probably ~18 - 23 degrees below horizon, pretty low comparing that to the equator where the sun can be literally 90 degrees below horizon) and since satellites are pretty far up, they can still see the sun and reflect a lot of light back to the camera.

Back in the late 80's I spent a year working at McMurdo Station, then another year at Amundsen-Scott Station at the geographical South Pole. We were still living under the big-o Geodesic Dome back then. Wintered over at both McMurdo & the Pole. Watching the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) dancing in the night sky, all eleven weeks of 24/7 night sky, was truly a sight to behold. Hell, even on the rare occasions the Southern Light sat out the dance.....the dark skies over Antarctica were spectacular.
There's really no way to properly describe the quiet white magnificence of Antarctica, so I won't even try, but after 2 straight years my adventure down on the ice began losing it's luster. Like always, I felt the urge to move on to a new adventure. Boy did I move on.... all the way to the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Bagged a gig working at the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Test Range on a tropical island. Kwajalein Lagoon in the Marshall Islands. From blinding white ice to blinding white sand beaches where the turquoise sea was 84 degrees & the weather was a constant year round..... High of 88....Low of 76....Partly Cloudy..... Chance of Rain. The night sky took on a whole new look. Looking south, the Southern Cross dominated the view. Looking north, the North Star shone just above the horizon. Kwajalein is one of the few locations on the planet where both can be seen simply by a turn of the head. Stayed in the Marshall's five years.... then off to Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria & Cameroon to be exact. Damn, I've had such a wonderful, adventurous life as an expat I almost feel guilty..... almost.

After you complete even one contract, it becomes easier to choose where on the planet you want to work & live next. Remember, look at the whole package, not just the hourly wage. Medical benefits, Room & Board, vacations, 401K's/retirement if available, company paid transportation, length of contract, tax free or tax deferred? Always shoot for tax free wages, but make sure you pay into Social Security. You'll be glad you did when it comes time to collect. Good luck pal.

Second: In the segments where they are showing a “time laps” we can see the apparent rotation of the background stars is clockwise. While, the apparent rotation at the North Pole would be counter clockwise.

And third --- If there are no planes flying at the South Pole, how did my daughter get there? She sure as hell didn’t walk!

Have observed this in Arctic Circle (Aurora Borealis) and there are no words to describe it. Served on an Icebreaker in US Coast Guard, during the summer we broke ice to bring supply ships to Thule Greenland AF Base, and from there took scientist as far north as we could reach by surface vessel for experiments and research. USCGC Westwind held the record at the time for sailing farthest north by a surface vessel. 29 Aug 79 Penetrated to 83°45'N-375 mi from North Pole. It was like a different planet there, sun 24-7, extremely cold, surrounded by ice, and icebergs. Harsh environment but yet extremely beautiful. Something i will never forget. Still have the awards, medals and patches for sailing that far north.
