Listen to the Music, by Tom Johnston (featuring The Doobie Brothers, Ellis Hall, Rajhesh Vaidhya, Roots Gospel Voices of Mississippi, Char, and HIRAIDAI)
In music as in life, the things that make us different make us stronger. All the various instruments, tones, perspectives, and cultures in this recording combine to create a new version of this classic Song Around The World.
The idea was born a few years ago during breakfast at the Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia. Our friend and drummer, Peter Bunetta, introduced me to Tom Johnston of The Doobie Brothers and we talked about taking "Listen to the Music" around the world. We started the track with an acoustic guitar demo played to a click track and then added bass from Colombia, tablas and veena from India, and then headed to the Redwood Forest in Northern California to record and film Tom Johnston live outside. We then recorded and filmed Patrick Simmons and John McFee playing along to the track in a park in San Diego. The journey then continued throughout North and South America, Europe, The Middle East, Asia, and Africa. This final version features 30 musicians from 12 countries united through their love of music.
Listen to the music and change the world!

Playing For Change (PFC) is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band-a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation-a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.

I'm 80 years old, and this mix takes me back to the days in the '70s when I played bass in a cover band at local dives and clubs. We'd rock this tune for 15 minutes or more and everyone loved it. Right now i'm teary-eyed, remembering those happy times. This song will live forever.
Hey Professor....I'm 80 too...let's cry tears of joy...how'bout it? My journey has been rich and deep and I remain so grateful. Feel like howling tonight. Blessings, Meg
Never stop playing
Dear @professor767. I hope that you are still doing well and staying SAFE! I personally say THANK YOU for your contributions to the music industry. The "COVER BANDS" of the 70's and early 80's is what kept this country going! It's too bad that these bands never got the RECOGNITION THAT THEY DEFINITELY DESERVED! BUT, I THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
I was 16 when this song was released for sale. Now, I am 67 and still LISTEN TO THE MUSIC. ❤
Thank you sir 🌈❤️🐘
I am leaving my comment here for people to like and each time they do that, to be notified and to listen again to this masterpiece
Listen on...
Yes!!! Let's play it again!!! And dance the day and night away!!! 💜XO
Just helping the cause 😎this rendition heals the soul
Listen to the Music all the Time ❤❤❤❤
Left you a reminder…and may leave more later ✌🏼❤️ @maxzye
I'm 71 years old and been listening to and loving the Doobie brothers my whole adult life, not to mention my youth. The way this has been put together with contributions from all over the world makes it one of the best music vids EVER!! Rock on.
ROCK ON WALLY
What Wally said! :)
hey ya ol goat im 63 and i approve of this message!!! LOL
I'm 5 years behind you in age, Wally, but I too have always loved the Doobie Brothers. This collaboration makes me cry (for joy) every time I watch it.
Right there with you Wally, I'm 63. "ROCK ON". Thank You Sir.
This song brings tears to my eyes - the diversity, the unity and the love of people with music as the glue.
Diversity is what the whole world is about ❤
It's a wonderful thing-the universality and diversity of music.
Beautiful, the way music should be, I've got tears also.
Isn’t it amazing that a “simple” creation from the soul as a song can bring such love and beauty into this world. Instead of making weapons of war, greed, fear , etc… we could create love and compassion for a world without judgement or prejudice. I mean how many lives were saved from let’s say suicide or even just a bad day by this one single song. Awaken people and live and spread the vibration this song is resonating
It's that damn System that controls the World and tries to Divide the people.
Gold medal to whoever tracked, mixed and mastered this beauty!
Seriously...how in the world did they do it...
Amazing mix 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Yes! This channel is a great example of a bunch of talented artists all doing their thing to make a greater whole than their sum!
A Master piece Indeed! Just listen! 😃 To the music 🎶🎵🎶
Absolute perfection
The sound Engineer and producer
should receive a Grammy
for their outstanding talent as
much as the incredible musicians who are performing
This proves humanity could easily spend more time 'jamming' instead of playing war games.
8 billion ppl would agree with you 🙏
Black Sabbath nailed it down with their song WAR Pigs...It's NOT the people, it's a group of them in secret using humanity as their own pawns in their own sick war games..."Politicians hide themselves away, they always started the wars..."
💯 exactly ❤
This is what the Internet should be for. Thank you.
Im 61 now.. born 1963.. our generation was raised on the GREATEST music of ALL time..
Muscle cars!! Beautiful girls & Rock N Roll!!
Nothing like getting in my classic 1970 Chevrolet Impala on a Saturday evening.. going for a cruise & listening to the MUSIC!! oh it takes me back to a time of when i met my Beautiful wife of 42 yrs! .. she was 16.. I was 17 in the Spring of 1981.. I had a 1967 Chevelle SS then.. Pioneer stereo w/ Pioneer 6x9 speakers..
She & I would CRANK these tunes up & thought we were just on top of the world!
Spring 2020 we found out she had Stage Two Breast Cancer.. 21 months later she was declared Cancer free!!
So young folks.. LISTEN TO THE MUSIC!!!
I'm 64 and can relate. I used to drive to my local amusement park in the late 70's. Blasting my music all the way. It was music, girls, beer and more beer. 🤣 Those were the best days of my life. The music was great and the girls were even better. Did I mention all the beautiful girls 🤣🤣. They loved my car, my tunes and me 🎼🎸🎙️❤️
This is beautiful - the people of the world can get along - its the politicians that pit us against one another - Music is what binds us together as one - Love everyone
Sad to see only 10 likes, shows how divided the government has made us 🇺🇸 😢 😔
AMEN BRITHERS!
so true
Amen..
Well said ❤
I'm a grown ass 65 year old man and this made me almost cry ! The song has been with me my entire adult life and only just now did it finally become crystal clear what it's full meaning is ! Just WOW !
Maybe the song was ahead of its time, just glad to see the legends are still around and a big thnx to the rest of the muso's who had a hand and voice in making this happen.
@Ronald McReynolds STFU and listen to the music

The shortest distance between two people, is a song.
i am now 62 years old, as a teenager i used to play this song with my 8 track in the car, in the 70's. Blaring out louds as i drive down the road. i love this music. Bring back memory!!! :)
Me too!
Played that 8 track so much had to wedge pieces of folded cardboard between case & player so wouldn’t drag! 😅
8 track !! Yessss!!
We need this everyday. Especially in today's world
Wow Fantastic experience and Keep up with the amazing efforts of Spreading Love through Music. May Almighty God bless All of them with Blissfull Health Always
Yes unfortunately there is too much egoism and greedy people only money and ruin people lives
Big time!
Very true!!!
Absolutely!!!
Fifty years ago, a young Tommy Johnston sat in his bedroom late one night and wrote this song. Now look what happened.
40 years ago my dad introduced me to this. He's not of this world anymore, but he lives on through the music
He's still young......forever!!
Amazing ❤❤❤
And his daughter sings with them too😊😊
@@sandro19691000Laura Johnston is so beautiful ❤
Tom Johnston, look at what you’ve done. Truly Classic American Pop/Rock song. “It ain’t so hard to do if you know how.” Y’all notice Tom’s daughter Lara? Everyone owes it to themselves to listen to the music [earphones if you have them].
that johnson fella hasn't skipped a beat i n 40 years
And the lady Lara Johnston, in the video, is his beautiful daughter !
@@waltercobb9700 oh ok , thanks
Reading the other comments, I was pleased to find that so many people connected with the positive, resonant message within this song. It hadn't occurred to me how relevant this song is to the current national climate. Thank you Tom Johnston and the Doobie Brothers for bringing it to us. You're making the world a better place one note, one chord at a time!
The first time I ever heard this song I had to rush out and get it.
really ... the song ... the sound ... the video ... just beautiful !!! ...
eye candy video of the world, audio editing beyond superb, & wonderful wonderful music
E..de..mata..
This just makes me smile!! 😊
I am former military and I wonder why we cant stop killing each other, what we cant get along or ignore people that hate us for no reason. This is an awesome video and song. I love the concept of such a diverse group of people happily singing this song and participating in both voice and instruments.
Right on Sir.
My father fought the Japanese in Burma and Thailand, then fought in the conflict n Malaya, then in Africa, then Eastern Europe. He had a rack of medals, but a heart of gold . . .
Yip, I'm here because I needed a break from war news. Severe head injury denied to exist for 7 years is my war. I've escaped a woman from russia but not her sister who hides her husband. Balance between song and drama. War and love.
I'm a Marine veteran. One Day Human beings will get it. Just keep the faith. Love one another.❤️
68 here, and God Bless You all! I can’t watch this this vid without getting up outta my chair and dancing along with all these beautiful people. Always end up with up with damp eyes as well. Thanks to all you Vets for all you’ve done and for sharing the Love!
"What the people need, is a way to make them smile" in these crazy difficult times (2023)... Thanks, Doobies!
"It ain't so hard to do if you know how"
Amen!
How ya gonna turn this political. Give us a break man.
@Randy Rodes Don't worry, he will crumble down because of his silly Coronavirus bullshit management... Fake president, just an apprentice.
@@collectoroffrance Relax. Only 4 and a half years left.
Not to take away from a heart-pounding,
Rendition of a Doobie Brothers classic...
But let's not forget the amazingly skilled technicians behind-the-scene that made this sound and look...so seamless!
Nicely done.

As a life long musician I have to say that was one of the most inspirational things I've ever watched. Music is the one thing that binds us all.
another great comment
AMEN
You're so right ... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John Humphrey I agree 100%. How about that veteran drummer, spot on, I even found myself strummin along and then seen that 1000 lost souls didn't find joy and meaning in this.
if you havent looked up playing for change its all awesome
I am leaving my comment here for people to like and each time they do that, to be notified and to listen again to this masterpiece.
The look on that guy's face just after the song ends is pure gold.
What beauty!!!
See, everybody can enjoy, and take part in the Doobie Brothers music! 🤎
Watching this video is a spiritual experience. Hope is possible. Joy is possible. Beauty heals. Love wins.
I thoroughly enjoy all the music playing for change records. They bring a genuinely unique sound ,style and fresh approach. You cats are tight!
Love conquers All❤❤❤
What a great version of this song. It’s great to see the world come together when others in this world are trying to separate us. To the majority of us out there, let’s celebrate togetherness. We are one world!
Tom Johnston sounds better than ever. This brought a tear to my eyes. Thanks for sharing.
2024 Different version. LOVE IT. Who will ever forget. BRILLIANT ❤😊
My family has lost two family members, a brother-in-law and my nephew's fiance within three weeks of each other. Obviously, we are feeling grief and I posted this on Facebook as a way to try help things even though it won't bring them back. Never lose faith in the power of music
Tom Johnston ' voice didn't give an inch over the years.
Love the song with the original voice.
It completes the memory and associated emotions. Wow, I sounded like a computer there.
Yeah ,listen to the music, love, art, and listen to music
Your right, his voice is spot on ,seen them at Buffalo bills Stadium in the 70s,just as good today if not even better ,the video is a blessing to the world today,
"People who make music together cannot be enemies, at least while the music
lasts." -- Paul Hindemith
Then I so hope the music lasts forever.❤
Great song on my 65th year Earthly visitation. Thank you Lord Jesus.
This is what life is about....
People all around the world getting together, being happy and having a wonderful time.
Look how beautiful all around the world can be. We don't need wars and kinda that stuff, we only need to get happy and treat each other well and life the best live we can 🙏🤗
Peace and Love ✌️♥️
Isn’t it incredible to listen to all these musicians from different places on this world making music together ? 👏 I absolutely love the sitar player…
It is a good feeling and a great idea.
my thoughts , exactly. specially the sitar dude.
I absolutely agree.i have never knew what that instrument was called until i started watching these videos.it shows that good and butifull things are still happening all over this tiny little world. God bless everyone and the Lord you believe in it's all really the same concept, good is always been better than bad.

I remain grateful to Mark Johnson
I’m seventy, and still singing and dancing. Much love to all of you. Keep singing, ALWAYS!❤
Wow just like when you were a younger kid Tom greatly appreciated and I’m 105 next birthday
Just found this video...the Doobie Brothers and their music were the soundtrack of my high school and college years. I've always loved this song. To hear it in a new version just shows the timelessness of the song and lyrics. And it's wonderful to see Patrick Simmons smiling and playing!! Bravo to all the musicians and the technical crew who put these videos together!
If you're reading this and feeling low in spirits, I am sending you love, strength and peace to cope with your life. Remember to ☺
This is the one that started it all for the Doobies. I got to see them several times. Great times, great music. Thank you.
Mike C
If that tune and cast of singers and musicians doesn't make you feel good, nothing will. Thank you Tom
Johnston for a song that resonates from so many years ago. I feel happy after that!
Damn this makes me so happy that it brings tears to my eyes ...
me too!
good to know I am not the only one... :)
ME TOO! CRYING ALREADY....
eugh. i cried my fucking eyes out.

We need this. Now more than ever. Ive been loving this song my whole life. Part of the soundtrack of my life. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Well said! Now more than ever we need more of this and less of everything else.

This is probably one of the most beautiful programs I watch
the guy at the end on the drum smiling -----GOLD
I thought the same...
Mr. Wise. Yes he's proud, and I'm proud of him. Gee what a Genuine smile!!!
YES, the smile of an African is usually Golden!
People from all walks of life putting aside indifference for their love of music. Makes the world a better place.
Isn’t just insane how the same human race that creates such beautiful art, is often the same that also goes out of its way to hurt others?
yep
Indeed❤
Music simply doesn't get any better than this .
Great combination and harmony of voices ! And I can’t take my eyes off of Ruthie .. .
Wow wow, this hits you right in the heart!!! This is how our world should be, united because we are really all the same!! We all want peace, harmony and wellbeing. Maybe one day ❤

Love the doobies and Tom Johnston’s raspy vocals. A big fan since High School in the 70s
Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons are still rockin'!
I love these songs played by people around the world. Peace .
I can’t even begin to express how much I LOVE this. For starters, this song is one of my favorites by the Doobie Brothers. And to see and hear it being performed by musicians all over the world........it brought me to tears. With all the hatred and division and evil in the world, this is what we need now more than ever. Peace. Harmony. Love. I wish everyone could see this video. I wish the whole world was like this video. 🙏
I’m with you, elsamere! We all need this type of inspiration in our lives right now. I’ve felt much peace and comfort from listening to some of the old songs.
🙏🏻 🤲 🕍 🕌 ⛪ 🛕 😊
I was in my 20's when the Doobies first hit the airwaves, and this is why I love their music, hearing it and playing it, it reaches inside people,
Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons must be incredibly proud of this. Write a song in one century, make some money and then find your singing it eighteen years into the next century with musicians from the world over. Meanwhile a 57 year old in Philly has his favorite albums hanging on the wall. Including the first one he bought with his own money. This song is on it. Way Cool moments all the way around.
Stewart Low
what a great comment... yes, way cool
And with his 21st century daughter adding vocals!
Makes me feel proud and I didn't have anything to do with it.
Filled my heart with joy, great song, great music. Never ever thought it could be better than the original, but I was wrong.
Okay. Wasn't expecting to be moved to tears today, but you know what, Im not gonna complain.
😂😂👍👍
This worldwide meeting of singers from different countries with this beautiful song is unbelievable.
These songs are such mood changers if the whole world knows and loves them, why in it can't we all just get along.
I have no words to describe the joy these videos from Playing for Change give to so many people.
When the song isn't yours anymore, and it belongs to the world.
Great response 👍
And that's a good thing. Music is THE universal language.
(downright...) Coolest youtube Comment 2020!
Absolutely Legendary Phrasing, sir.
In light of happenings in the USA , and now in Canada too, good advice for today, tonight and tomorrow. Bring joy to your neighbours. Leave your guns and clubs at home. You do not need them. You need to talk.
The fact that even ONE person doesn't like this shows that there is
SO MUCH STILL TO BE DONE!!!?!
this shows 1.2k dislikes. WTF? 10-22-2019
@@markcrume Yeah. I'll never understand. Even if I didn't like this song, it brings tears to my eyes because I know what it took to do this.
Agree...
some of the dislikes are just A holes who do it cause it pisses off people. some are closet and open racists. some are people who listen to only two kinds of music country and western.
One of the best remixes or rework, collars ever freaking done
This should be the song for the world right now! ..Take Care Everyone Out There!
I agree. I'm going to send it to everyone

Music is a powerful tool that can truly heal and soothe the soul. Dance along with the music💖💖💖
Gotta love Pat Simmons- with the Packers hat no less! Never met the man but he's obviously, incredibly grounded! Good for you, Mr. Simmons! Bringing so much joy to u all!
Best remake ever. The words are scripture recognized by all creeds, and obviously felt in the artist’s expression of this classic! I feel it. I love it.
Tom Johnston, the original voice of the Doobies.
And Patrick Simmons & John McFee. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Correct !!! Nice...
Never forget Tyronne Porter, sensational bassist
...And Tom's daughter Laura.
THE ONLY VOICE OF THE DOOBIES!!!!!
Tom Johnston is one of the top vocalists in rock. Period. He is a legend and one of the best musicians . Of course the Doobies as well. This band and rendition kicks ass. Love it!!!!!
Not matter what years or older I get, this song is always playing, where ever or when ever, that's my song, always.😊❤❤😊
Playing For Change once again proves music is the common thread that binds all of us.
How could anyone take even a finger movement to give this a thumbs down?
Music is one of the only things that all cultures and societies throughout history have in common
My 95-year old mother who recently passed away was a huge Doobie fan having seen them in concert , owning several concert footage VHS and DVD's enjoyed this creative video. It ignited once again her passion for Music and Life. Thank-you Doobie Brothers, musician's around the world & Playing For Change for this wonderful recording!!

When I realise how much division covid 19 has caused I watch this and am reminded of just how much more we are capable of doing when we come together.
What a blessing! How I long to hear such music in worship of the Almighty! I remember this song repeatedly played at Ft. Carson, CO, where I was under arrest for refusing to be inducted and fight in that evil and phony Vietnam War.
What a powerful song! Makes me want to cry and gives me goose pimples
Music is the only thing that can be shared by all culture's without out hate. Love it. Keep those beautiful positive messages coming. This is definitely heartwarming. Thank you all
Another "Ode of Joy"... - I love that "Playing for Change Band" thing.

My brother Marty loved the Doobie Brothers from the very beginning. Everyone who knew and loved him always connected him with the Doobs' music.
