Can confirm, putting music into the Custom Music folder lets it play in game. There's also an option in the settings to choose which songs play on the radio stations, so you can listen to the in-game music and uncheck songs you don't like. So if you wanted to, you could fill the radio stations with custom music and completely replace the base game music. It can be a little immersion-breaking to have music with English music playing over the radio, but since I write music I like to put my songs into the game so my sims can listen to them. (You could also probably replace all the in-game Simlish music with its English equivalents if you wanted to? That would be way more work though since you can't see the actual English titles in the game or in your folders.)
@@legendarybubbles4567 I hadn't thought of using it that way, but that's a good point! You could totally fill the radio stations with royalty-free music and then uncheck all the copyrighted songs in-game so it would only play the royalty-free stuff!
Yup I love how customizable the music is in the Sims 4! Much better than previous games (even though you can add songs in all games). I made Sims 4 music guides on my channel if you want more info. Either way, Simlish music is great :D
I think you can see what the songs are in-game? I don't remember where it is, but somewhere in the menu that pops up when you hit ESC is a section that lists all of the music in their separate categories. That's how I came across one song I quite liked.
One thing you forgot to point out is that core mods like UI Cheats and MC Command Center can only be one folder deep within the mods folder. Mods (folder)> UI Cheats (folder)> UI Cheats package and script files. CC like eyelashes and makeup can be put in more folders.
Also you can add extra subfolders to the config file if you want that extra few layers of organization Edit: to clarify, I mean the one in the Mods folder, Resources.cfg (the .cfg extension indicates a configuration file). Just copy the longest line at the bottom and add another \* to increase the subfolders depth it will read
@@mistresstia if you mess it up, you can always just delete Resource.cfg and the game will regenerate a new one next time it launches (just tested to confirm)
Big thanks for having subtitles in so many of your videos! It's so nice to watch a video without having to rewind every once in a while because of the slow-ass auditory processing my brain does...
I love how Kayla said how important your saves folder is etc and to back them up. I delete these all the time. I never stick with sims or households long. I'm happy starting from scratch.
More than ten years ago when I palyed TS2 my sister and I somehow found out that you could put your own mp3 files to the music folder and listen to your own music on the radio we just filled the folders with Nightwish and The Rasmus and stuff. After years of not playing the game every time I heard certain songs from Nightwish it would bring me back to our legacy challenge families. It amazes me how we found out because we were like 12 and my english was definitely not good enough to find it on the internet in english.
I can't help but notice how cute that sweater looks on Kayla throughout all the video! It makes me get into the christmass mood even further for some reason
I’ve had the sims 4 for a little over 5 years now and the only files I touch are the mods and saves folders. Had no idea and didn’t really care what the other were😂. But this video is a huge help. Thanks!
No this video is not too long at all Kayla, It was really helpful to have someone go in depth about all the weird stuff in your sims 4 folder! Thanks :D
I literally learn new things about the sims every day. Like just the other day I found out that you change the time of day in build mode if you press L. It’s so simple but I never knew🧍🏼♀️
Ekstra little thing to know is that Script mods usually don't work if you put them in too many sub folders. So if you have subfolders don't bury them too deep. I usually keep mine out of sub folders all together, just to be sure.
I'm sure if someone new to the game wants to "install" a mod they will look at a different video but if not: Script files can only go 1 level into the mods folder. So if you do get the UI cheats for example you can create a subfolder for it but don't put the Script file in another subfolder in there.
Just to verify you can add your own music and add it to the radio stations in the gameplay options menu. When I changed from The Sims 2 to The Sims 4 I brought over my custom music from that game and I've had the same one's since The Sims 2

i knew most of these already, but this is such an important video, especially for new players, or even people who have been playing for a while but are scared to mess around with the files/download mods. and honestly there were some useful information i didn't know about, for example the Options file, i didn't know what it was for, and that you could back that up. honestly this video couldn't have come in a more appropriate timing, because i'm literally in the process of backing everything up because i'm gonna have an ssd installed into my laptop, so thanks kayla for making the exact video that i didn't know i needed!
4 months ago this video taught me about downloading mods in a very unintimidating way, and today it helped me confidently clean everything up after my Sims game was acting funny. Thanks simsie!
Just something to remember in the Mods folder if you create subfolders; you can't go three folders deep (Mods folder counts as 1) or stuff might not work correctly. Especially Script Mods.
You can, you just have to update the config file to tell it to look in those deeper files. Script files CAN'T be placed more than 1 subfolders deep (ie: "Mods > Script Files") or they'll break, but all other content can be put as deep as you want as long as the resources file is configured to recognize it
Oh my god!! This is AMAZING I habe been trying to figure out how they do those machinima for yeeeaaaars and no one ever answered to me when all I wanted to know is how they get their camera to work the slow and smooth way they do. Finally! Fiiiinally 😭 Thank you ma'am!💖💖💖
I ALWAYS delete the cache, cachestr and onlinethumbnailcache folder and the localthumbcache file (and all exceptions) after I close my game and I noticed that it runs smoother since I started doing it. Many of the modders recommend doing this anyway and I do think it makes a difference, albeit probably only a small one. Lately there's also very often a error when you try to open the gallery and the better exceptions mod says to actually delete the "notify.glob" file. It pops up again the next time you open the game but whenever I delete it I don't get that error as often anymore. It's annoying and apparently we're supposed to report this to the devs lol :D
hey there! I’m having this exact gallery issue on mac and even deleting those aren’t helping :( had the same issue a few months back, got so frustrated that I stopped playing and started playing again last week.. it was fine until today and now it’s the same issue again. this is so, so useful, ive always wondered what all this stuff is and i especially had the problem with camera settings being triggered by trying to scale up objects a lot. glad to know what it is!
Good tutorial for those who don't know what to do. I always delete all my cache files each time I closed the game. Sometimes could be this Scratch folder one inside Saves folder after the game is closed. This must be deleted if it don't disappear, but ONLY after the game is closed.
DID LIL SIMSIE CURSE? THE TITLE???? Idk how often she curses I’ve never heard them curse Edit: no one is offended by her cursing lmao we just thought it was surprising
Great info! I'm terrified of deleting the wrong things, and sad when simmers don't realize how easy and fast it is, and how much grief you all can avoid if you backup the whole folder: On a PC, the path is: This PC > Documents > Electronic Arts. The Sims 3 and TS4 are there, so I copy whichever folder I'm backing up, and paste it to the desktop. TS2 is under This PC > Documents > EA Games. I have backup folders on my desktop for T2, TS3, and TS4, and also copy them to an external hard drive. When you get a new computer, after installing the games, you can open This PC > Documents > Electronic Arts, delete the folders that are from the new installation, and copy/paste the backed-up version from the desktop or external hard drive. Origin will have TS2, TS3, and TS4 ready to install, but it won't have your saves. Don't be sad simmers. TS4 is 4 GB, TS3 is 11.3 GB, TS2 is 3 GB. After 20 years, it would crush my soul if I had to start over, so this way are the chances are greatly reduced. You can also save in the cloud, in case your house or computer gets destroyed.
One thing Simsie didn't mention is when organizing the mods folder you can only add folders one level deep. So you can put mods into folders you put in the mods folder but the game won't read mods if you put them in another set of folders in the folders you made in the original mods folder
I just tried the custom music one - 100% works, also 100% distracting me now from my gameplay because I keep zooming in to the speaker everytime I recognize a song... 10/10 PRO TIP In-game settings under Music you can also choose which songs will actually play on your radio, if you REALLY commit you can disallow all simlish songs and just let your own play
12:25 those are all Python and Autodesk calls (the game engine code). If you follow what it’s saying as text and filter out of your mind the formatting () you can actually see the bugs Maxis should be fixing. STEM is good, STEM is great, but reading helps me most of all
12:25 (one last comment) Kayla for the love of god turn on word wrap in notepad or get notepad+ lol no wonder you can’t read it when it’s a singular stream of consciousness code - if you use a better editor or turn on word wrap it becomes immediately more readable at a glance. Not sure how familiar you are with writing code but it’s all pretty simplistic once you get past the formatting and parsing on screen.
15:17 15 minute primer on your TS4 folder is always helpful, I have been playing with The Sims since the OG 2000s days so I find it helpful, this is the info the next generation of players and modders alike needs to take these tools and run with them, so I’m appreciative. The best advice was at the beginning - make backups (multiple on different places) of your Sims 4 folder. Whole thing. Just make those backup snapshots every so often (weeks, months) and save your game frequently. The best way 👍👍
thank you!! this is extremely helpful and you explained everything in such a good way that people who don’t understand much about computer stuff (me lol) will understand!

this is so, so useful, ive always wondered what all this stuff is and i especially had the problem with camera settings being triggered by trying to scale up objects a lot. glad to know what it is!
I love watching her videos it makes me smile sm and it makes me love the sims 4 😁
Good tutorial for those who don't know what to do. I always delete all my cache files each time I closed the game. Sometimes could be this Scratch folder one inside Saves folder after the game is closed. This must be deleted if it don't disappear, but ONLY after the game is closed.
i love this video because its super useful but also i love it even more for the title. 💀
DID LIL SIMSIE CURSE? THE TITLE???? Idk how often she curses I’ve never heard them curse
Edit: no one is offended by her cursing lmao we just thought it was surprising
I think she actually cusses in streams 😔 I always thought she was family friendly but ..
@@YourLocal_Simmer it’s funny tbh
@@Loonlings I mean yeah sims 4 is a 12 so I guess it's OK
tbf she did say “wtf” so technically she didn’t and she’s only very Family Friendly on TH-cam i suppose
@@YourLocal_Simmer her streams are family friendly, she doesn't cuss in them
Very helpful! And thank you for using Dark Mode! When I'm not gaming I'm coding. It's painful when people make things with bright white backgrounds.
I have so many "LastCleanExceptions" files and never knew what to do with them. So now they're cleaned out, thanks for the video.
I saw the 'wtf' in the title and seriously considered if someone was posting as her for a hot second 😭😭
Im not shocked at the title, im proud. I bet 5 ppl a dollar it was Dan.
you helped me understanding what does files are. Also saving a lot of space for my computer. Thank you so much.
Holy crap, thank you for making this.
One thing Simsie didn't mention is when organizing the mods folder you can only add folders one level deep.
So you can put mods into folders you put in the mods folder but the game won't read mods if you put them in another set of folders in the folders you made in the original mods folder
well script mods are up to 1 folder deep, but non-script mods can be up to 5 folders deep
Most mods and cc can be placed in sub folders, it's scripts that have to be one folder deep.
I am so thankful for this because I recently installed mods, and now I keep getting the last exception pop up :)
This was really helpful. Thank you.
I've put music into that custom music folder. It works perfectly fine.
I just tried the custom music one - 100% works, also 100% distracting me now from my gameplay because I keep zooming in to the speaker everytime I recognize a song... 10/10
PRO TIP
In-game settings under Music you can also choose which songs will actually play on your radio, if you REALLY commit you can disallow all simlish songs and just let your own play
I was sick and just reading the “wtf” cured me
I saw Sims Medieval in one of your folders! I thought I was the only one who bought that!
Omg my in game camera randomly started panning out when I pressed 9 and I had no idea why til now. Thank you!
12:25 those are all Python and Autodesk calls (the game engine code). If you follow what it’s saying as text and filter out of your mind the formatting () you can actually see the bugs Maxis should be fixing. STEM is good, STEM is great, but reading helps me most of all
12:25 (one last comment)
Kayla for the love of god turn on word wrap in notepad or get notepad+ lol no wonder you can’t read it when it’s a singular stream of consciousness code - if you use a better editor or turn on word wrap it becomes immediately more readable at a glance.
The best way 👍👍
Twisted Mexi has better exceptions that helps you understand which mods caused the exception
Kayla, Thank you for taking the time to go into detail on all you explained. I found it very helpful. Maggie
so thats why all the sims i saved to my library were gone. what a shame omg
When you have a one tile square in your shellchallenge you can put a fridge or a shelf inside to fill the lot and it looks amazing😊
I just lost all my saves but this video is amazing its helping me ty simsie
You did a great job. It wasn't long at all. Everything you said was helpful.
this is the perfect timing because i think i may be getting a new computer for christmas but idk. still good to know how to navigate this
thank you!! this is extremely helpful and you explained everything in such a good way that people who don’t understand much about computer stuff (me lol) will understand!
the fact that kayak put "wtf" in the title is so strange, yet so appropriate
the random sim you mentioned was anitta! thats why its being promoted
