I always rubbed my dog's tummy and told them to go away and they did. With humans I tell them to look at me because I have something very important to tell them and I hold eye contact until I notice that they don't have them anymore and then I say, "you don't have hiccups." It takes seconds. Sometimes I say, "I really need you to focus." Which is much nicer than scaring them. A dog won't understand why you scared them, so getting their attention with something would probably work and won't make them suspicious and fearful of humans. Or the belly rub thing. My dog always got them when she was a baby when she woke up. Apparently human babies are the same way.
My 4 month old Pug puppy has been getting them lately Was concerned but watching your video...he was exactly the same. Chest expanding and relaxing. Expanding and relaxing. But no human-like hiccup sounds through the throat. My dog's hiccups just go away after a minute or so. Or less. No need to say BOOOO!! :) Otherwise he's perfect. I posted this video in 2012 when Bess had just turned 1 and I'm happy to report that she is still alive and well, having had her 11th birthday just last month. I'll try and post some more videos of her shortly. I posted this video as a bit of a joke, but I didn't expect people to find it and use it as serious advice. idk if you got the hiccups to stop with this hilarious idea but i do know that it's 3:41 a.m and that scream scared me so bad it felt like my heart went through my ass! you shouldve seen me jump LOL my doggy CoCo started doing something weird and i panicked then i was like wait, maybe it's hiccups? lets go see if someone on youtube has put a video up showing this and TADAAA i found you and Bessie is doing the same as Coco so no i'm not worried something is horribly wrong. also, i apologize for the long comment filled with things i didnt have to say but i'm running on little sleep and i'm delirious lol thank you for the help! happy to know beautiful bessie is still bebopping around being cute

For the record, you don't have to scare them if you understand WHY scaring them works. Literally all it does is distract your brain from the hiccups, which you can do with other, much nicer methods lol

I used to help my late fox terrier with hiccups by gently massaging her throat. It seemed to help and she was *so* happy (probably understood I was trying to help) that she started wagging her tail and smothered me with kisses everytime :)
Our dog Bess (in this video) only had them for a short while and she's not had hiccups often over her life. If your dog's hiccups are continuing for more than a few hours, you should take her to the vet to get checked out. Hope your dog is ok now

Don’t have to scare them…you can talk about places they know and like, confusing them works, too. This works on people ( talk about a purple horse in the kitchen). It works. But you’ll have to come up with new conversations. Repeating the same won’t work
