THE definitive version of a great song. Coverdale had only just joined the band six months earlier as a 23 year old rookie and this was his first time in US. He certainly stepped up to the plate. Glenn's voice is holding up better these days but both great rock icons still today 42 years down the line. Gentlemen we salute you!
I beg to differ. This is a horrible mix where Blackmore's guitar is pretty much buried. Live in London and Made In Europe are much better. Also Graz and Live In Paris. Just about every other version tops this.
I saw deep purple in 1973. It was the loudest concert I was ever at and I was about 50 yards from the stage. My ears rang for a week after. Jon Lord is God.
@willruelle9799 The first time I saw these guys was at CalJam ‘74 at the Ontario Motor Speedway. That was also the first time my ears told me yeah, we might be doing some damage here. Then some years later I saw the Ramones at the Varsity Grill at the U of MD. They came out, Joey made the mic stand go as tall as it could, he bent down to it, said “we are the Ramones and this is a song called “Rockaway Beach””, and that was the last thing I heard for about 10 days.
You don't hear too much about him now, but during this phase of rock history, Ian Paice was regarded as THE guy. Every rock drummer I knew looked up to him as the best.
@@stargazer-xw2ti agreed more swing and groove, the way he grooves with his wrists listen to the Burn isolated drum track the guy was a manic but on time.
Well, he arguably invented heavy metal drumming. I’ve never thought of him as underrated since he sold 100 million records with Deep Purple and played on three successful Whitesnake albums with David Coverdale. As a musician, he’s underrated but he’s still played on many hits.
Since i was a lil shitstain my dad always told me "There's not many times someone have seen Blackmore smile" and that he just wanna go up on stage, play his shit and then get the f out of there. The awesome combination of guitars, lead and bass, together with the keyboards, vocals and the incredible drumming of Ian Paice, this is a hard rock classic of epic proportions! It doesn’t get better than this, the 70’s was possibly the best decade for the genre of rock music!
As a young teenager I was at this show. Deep Purple and ELP afterwards as the closing band were absolutely incredible live. The live sound in that sea of over 200,000 people was incredible. To this day I consider The California Jam the greatest concert event I have ever been to. And no fights or any like that, it was just great positive vibes and energy,, ohhh, and copious amounts of weed being smoked 😊
They couldn't do a show like that now, the music is too violent, the fans too rowdy. They tried with Woodstock 99 and the burned the place to the ground.
Everybody on this performance is an absolut monster on their respective instrument. At first I was astonished by Hughe's vocals and bassline, but right now I think my favorite one is Paice's drumwork, he hits those drums with so much passion like a true metal drummer!

David Coverdale is god, Glene Hughes is pure perfect, Richie Blackmore like always one of the best guitarist in the world, Jon Lord was genius piano player, and last but not least Ian Paice very very good drummer, and very underrated. I love this show so much! I'm glad that i saw Deep Purple five times in my life! Thank you Dad!
Jon Lord he has no 'h' in his name.
Timothy Ball oh yes, i know that, small oversight 😌 but thanks.
La meilleure formation de DEEP PURPLE
If you said that about ANY other band, you could rightfully be called a fanboy... In this case, it was a rock band of incredible artists.
Glenn Hughes is 100% bass badass! :)
The BEST Deep Purple line up ever. All of them BRILLIANT !
Deep Purple. If bands had this kind of talent today... I think it might solve a lot of problems.
Ian Paice is such a fantastic drummer , between his relentless effort and Hughes driving bass it's no wonder this song is such a classic ,
I was at that show. They blew us all away. All 4 musicians were all stars to me
You lucky bastard 🤟🤟

THE definitive version of a great song. Coverdale had only just joined the band six months earlier as a 23 year old rookie and this was his first time in US. He certainly stepped up to the plate. Glenn's voice is holding up better these days but both great rock icons still today 42 years down the line. Gentlemen we salute you!
its true
I beg to differ. This is a horrible mix where Blackmore's guitar is pretty much buried. Live in London and Made In Europe are much better. Also Graz and Live In Paris. Just about every other version tops this.
Actually, Coverdale was 22 (Sept '51)
I saw deep purple in 1973. It was the loudest concert I was ever at and I was about 50 yards from the stage. My ears rang for a week after. Jon Lord is God.
I saw Deep Purple in '91. I was somewhere 15 meters away from the stage. Have tinnitus to this day.
Glen Hughes... frackin rock star. I always think Ritchie is gonna go ballistic at any moment.
You don't hear too much about him now, but during this phase of rock history, Ian Paice was regarded as THE guy. Every rock drummer I knew looked up to him as the best.
He's like a swinging herd of rhinoceroses!
@Vintage Heart paice was better than bonham.
@@stargazer-xw2ti agreed more swing and groove, the way he grooves with his wrists listen to the Burn isolated drum track the guy was a manic but on time.
Well he had a lot of competition. There was Keith Moon, Bonham, Peart, Mitch Mitchell...
And left-handed to boot. Who could imitate him?
This is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. Few bands could be so energetic and heavy, and somehow manage to make it sound even better live.
Richie always seemed grateful to the crowd he was playing too! He really enjoyed playing for the fans!
Glenn is the best. The monster of rock and bass!!
HE WAS THE WORST AND RUINED THE BAND.

Paicey one of the most underrated rock drummers of all time
Well, he arguably invented heavy metal drumming. I’ve never thought of him as underrated since he sold 100 million records with Deep Purple and played on three successful Whitesnake albums with David Coverdale. As a musician, he’s underrated but he’s still played on many hits.
@bhobo09 Unterrated drummer??? In which world do you live??? Ian Paice is - after John Bonhom - knew as one of the best drummer in the world!
Not underrated at all, we all thought he was the shit back in the day
And he does it LEFT HANDED... just because he can.
give me paice over Bonham anyday
Blackmore just has the coolest guitar style and sound, effortless talent, one of the very best ever. Such a shame he was difficult to work with.
He always looks like a Wizzard. Mistreaded from this show is my favourite
Yngwie
Since i was a lil shitstain my dad always told me "There's not many times someone have seen Blackmore smile" and that he just wanna go up on stage, play his shit and then get the f out of there. Preferably not talk with anyone. None of it meant in a bad way, he's one of my dads fav guitarists. I always loved how that description kinda fits.
Yeah but that's just what people are like when they're younger, especially artistic types. It's a case of 'it is what it is' I suppose! We just have to be grateful of what did occur, not what went wrong and didn't occur.
@@jacobjansson1486 you can see a bit of a smile as he passes over to Glenn Hughes for his first break... "give it to 'em..."
In my opinion this was their finest time!! Glenn Hughes vocals were incredible and he can still hit these notes!!!
I started getting into Deep Purple at 12. They remain the greatest rock band of all time, even with the line up changes.
What a band. Remember hearing Ritchie ripping into this great riff for the first time in Glasgow, 1974. The place went nuts. Got to be one of the best rock openers of all time. Strange but true .. Purple are underrated. Arguably the best live hard rock band ever.
Hughes and Coverdale only 23, just 5 years out of high school and already this far along in their careers...insane
Genesis wrote Suppers Ready when they were 21-22.
David Pearl they look like they are 30 years old plus! Wow, my friends and I did not look like this at 23...
David Pearl Hughes was 21 here

And ? Plant was only 19 when joined LZ
What a performance. They are on fire.
I was 14 years old when I saw this(California Jam) Live on TV. Deep Purple & Black Sabbath....it changed my life. Huge fan of them both, forever.....
Ian Pace is an absolute legend of a drummer!!!and my hero since I’ve started learning the drums 50 years ago!
5:02 ... Jon Lord ROCKING the keyboards, literally.
Great band, great song, one of the greatest rock classics ever!
There’s enough energy on that stage to light up the entire world!! The awesome combination of guitars, lead and bass, together with the keyboards, vocals and the incredible drumming of Ian Paice, this is a hard rock classic of epic proportions! It doesn’t get better than this, the 70’s was possibly the best decade for the genre of rock music!
70's David Coverdale is really somethin else! 🙂
Coverdade was in the right place at the right time. Burn is immortalized with him on vocals.
Stormbringer and Keep On Moving too.
Glenn Hughes' voice 😍😍 OMG
J pini ... that's David Coverdale
Dick Bullwood He is talking about the high notes of Glenn
chingones!!!#
fantastic.
I dont know if i should even say this but, Glenn Hughes sings alot way better than David, in my opinion :D Kickass!
I remember this well! I was just a boy of 15 years old when I missed this concert..
One the greatest screams of all time , Glenn Hughes what a collection of talent ? young coverdale ...amazing
Everybody on this performance is an absolut monster on their respective instrument.
At first I was astonished by Hughe's vocals and bassline, but right now I think my favorite one is Paice's drumwork, he hits those drums with so much passion like a true metal drummer!
Look at the face and the body language, and the positive vibrations of EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM!!! They are enjoying and performing with their best of the best. That is why this is a very powerful performance with such a good quality. Excellent.
Mar Ana Well yeah, acid kicks ass man.😳
Mar Ana yes man, the quality and for the times mind boggling
CAnt be duplicated the era and sound
and ewerybady is so talent
Glenn is an amazing musician and singer. Saw him with Black Country Communion with Joe Bonamassa several years ago and he still had it. Love all Deep Purple including Storm Bringer and Burn
Ian Paice is a drumming genius and legend!!!
Everyone on this stage is just on fire - bursting with energy. A display of how powerful music can be...

Ritchie Blackmore est le meilleur guitariste au monde 👍💯💯💯❤️💯💯 respect.
Нет, ребята реально вписали себя в историю .Ричи- красавчик!!!!
..footage is amazing. You can almost sense what was going through Ritchie's mind as he waits for his cues. Glenn is phenomenal, playing, singing...all this while looking good! So unfair..
Rock does not come bigger than this. Nor the hair.
What an incredible mix, David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes then you add Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lorde - WOW !!!
Amazing, one of the greatest band ever! Personally love Coverdale/ Hughes tandem.
Сума сойти! И сейчас гоняю на полную в машине их! Музыка на века вперед!
At the end of this set Blackmore punched a cameraman, kicked his cabinet into the crowd, they set a fire onstage and escaped in a helicopter. Now THAT'S rock n roll.
EPIC
@@AlizeeDefan Didn't actually punch a cameraman but did run his guitar's neck into the lens, breaking it. The video camera at the time was worth tens of thousands of dollars I believe. The production company was a bit pissed off.
What happened before the gig was even more hilarious.
