I started listening to the band during the Hagar era, but I prefer the Roth catalog. I like the heavier, hard rock songs of Van Halen like Mean Streets, I'm the One, etc. Not a big fan of songs like Dance the Night Away or When It's Love. That's not to say I dislike the songs with Sammy, just, they went more Pop/Soft Rock with Sam. Hagar gets a lot of the blame for it, but it was Ed's doing, wanting to play more keyboards and piano tracks. I'll also say I often prefer Sammy's solo work to his Van Halen catalog. Seen Van Halen 7 times...4 times with Sam, 3 times with Dave, plus seen Sam twice as a solo artist, including just a few weeks ago.

With Roth the band was fairly one dimensional. Not a damn thing wrong with that. However with Sammy the band went places musically that they wouldn't have with Roth. Nothing wrong with that either. I saw the band about 2 weeks before the final split and honestly it remains one of the best shows I've ever seen.

You've entered the VanHagar era. Though Hagar is considered by many a better vocalist than DLR, he didn't have the showmanship like DLR did IMO. The VanHagar era had some good songs but had a more poppy sound than earlier VH. Throughout the VH discography it's Eddie and Alex that kept my interest in VH.
Be sure to check out Montrose, a band Sammy Hagar sang for earlier and Sammy's solo material.

I consider them to be almost 2 separate bands. I think they were more fun with David Lee Roth, but they were more technically accomplished with Sammy Hager. Interesting thing about Sammy is that he’s actually an extremely talented guitar player, but he ended up very rarely playing on anybody’s own solo songs with Van Halen because he felt like there was no place in the band for a guitar player other than Eddie.

The instrumentation in VH during both the Roth and Hagar eras were stellar. Eddie’s guitar is always elite no matter what. And people forget how good a drummer Alex was - and with Michael Anthony’s bass, they gave VH tremendous groove. You FELT it.
The big difference is of course is:
    1. The vocals - Sammy was a better singer with a terrific range. Roth isn’t a great singer, but he was great for the “party” band feel that earlier VH had. It was a raw attitude. They also experimented with earlier technology more and had far more variety in their sound than Hagar’s VH. They were having spontaneous fun, and it felt that way.
    2. They were more mature by this point and had Eddie’s new 5150 studio with upgraded everything. It all lent itself to a more polished sound with bigger production value (layered instruments, bigger chorus, structured compositions, Sammy’s more sophisticated vocals, etc.). It all added up to a more commercial sound with the same killer musicians. And it hit as MTV was PEAKING.

Eddie's Lamborghini had broken down, and he was at a shop called Claudio's getting it looked at. While he was there, as fate would have it, The owner was on the phone with Sammy (his car had broken down as well.. After the phone call, Claudio noticed that Eddie didn't look to happy so he asked him what was wrong. Eddie said that he was bummed because their singer (Dave) left the band.. Claudio said " I just got off the phone with Sammy, Call Sammy ". Eddie said "Give me his number man" and he called him right from Claudio's Shop.. Watch the video called "Van Halen Unleashed", it talks all about it...

50+ years ago, Sammy Hagar was the lead singer of Montrose, which was founded in my home area the San Francisco Bay Area 🌉.
Montrose splintered into 3 successful entities. Listed according to departure. 1 Samny Hagar, lead vocals and rhythm guitar 2 Denny Carmassi, like me born in San Francisco, drums 🥁, joined Heart ❤ 3 Alan Fitzgerald, like me born in San Francisco, bass guitar and keyboards 🎹, a founder of Night Ranger.
Sammy Hagar wrote and performed I've Done Everything for You. It bombed 💣 . In 1981,
Rick Springfield covered it, and it rose 🌹 in the Billboard charts! 🤯 Sammy Hagar has more details in interviews and in cincert videos of the song.
Biggest debate in high school 🏫: Van Hagar or Sam Halen?
Biggest hit as a solo singer for Sammy Hagar is based on getting a ticket 🎟 for speeding. 🐆
Suggested video 📹: 1 Sammy Hagar sings I Can't Drive Fifty-five. 2 Sammy Hagar sings Sam I Am.

The first band I saw in concert was Van Halen. I was 14 I believe and I'm 59 now. I idolized Roth back then and when he left the band I lost touch with Van Halen for a spell. After some time and hearing them on the radio with Sammy singing I grew to appreciate their new sound. Both served well during their tenure with Van Halen. Also from interviews I've seen with Sammy he comes across as a pretty chill performer and just an all round good guy you would love to hang out with. Roth I think is still one of the best frontmen during his time but I have to admit I couldn't take listening to him perform when he rejoined the band. Anyways, they both put out great music and I honestly now don't think one was better than the other. They were just different. We lost Eddie way too soon.

The Sammy era of Van Halen is definitely a little softer, a little more poppy. But, still kicks ass as well. However, if you guys are looking to see what some harder less poppy songs are like from Van Halen with Sammy, check these track out! Get Up, Good Enough, A.F.U., Big Fat Money, Sucker in a 3 Piece. You were both spot on during your mid-song commentary. 👍 As a diehard fan when they made the switch to Sammy i had serious anxiety when I bought their first release, which I believe this is from. i believe their first album with Sammy was the 5150 album. (5150 being the the legal code in CA for the criminally insane). But you're right, this is a poppy song but they have some rockers too. And they only got better, IMO. Dave was a great singer but was too full of himself. To watch those music videos of their later years together 🤮 JUMP did it for me! I was done with them after that one. Sorry folks, I hate that song. Sammy was just what they needed. In fact, a buddy of mine just informed about 8 of that he got us some tickets to a Sammy concert next Summer!!! I can't wait. It's at my fav place for shows, which is an indoor outdoor venue. (lawn seats) You pray for good weather and have the time of your life under the stars. When the guy on stage is 76 years old, there will be prob 4 security guards and 54 paramedics present for the 35,000 capacity crowd. Meaning, you can party your ass off with whatever you like to party with and not get hassled. You party with the people around you. It's a beautiful thing. Can't wait. Just be careful Sammy, at your age one fall can put you out for good!!

Was fortunate to see Van Halen once, or Van Hagar, as I saw them with Sammy. Didn't have an opportunity to see them with "Diamond Dave" on vocals. No matter which vocalist you prefer, the talent can't be denied. EVH was an amazing guitar player and his brother, AVH, was a really good drummer. Hard to find too many bass players who are as good as Mike Anthony. You asked about favorite Van Halen song. Hard to pick just one, but I will go with "Finish What Ya Started" from the OU812 Album. Most of us responding here know this, but in case you don't, EVH did the guitar solo on "Beat It" from Michael Jackson's Thriller album. Gives you an idea of how easy it was for him to cross genres. RIP Eddie!!!

They made the most magic between 1986 and 1991. The DLR stuff was great, but Ed was set free to do more and they did. During that time Sammy was allowed to play his guitar and that freed Ed to play keyboards and piano. After that period, Sammy had to hang up his guitar, except for one song per concert. There’s always arguments over numbers, but all of their records with Sammy went to #1 and they sold more per period than any DLR record. But it helped that Sam brought a bunch of fans from his solo career and joined we VH fans.
Sammy’s is a superior singer and songwriter. I’m not trashing DLR, but it’s true. Sam could also sing any VH song, but DLR couldn’t. DLR was a frontman. That’s his appeal to the people that prefer him.

Roth can't even come close to Hagar’s voice. If you like Roth's show, be honest. Roth couldn't perform any Hagar’s vocals. Do better.

@@tomarriola4952 Do better? Be honest? Maybe read my comment over again. Even tho I said Roth was Van Halen’s “ Ultimate” singer, I also STATED there was no denying the connection Sammy had with the band. Implying I felt the same about them both! And my comment was really about EDDIE, and ALEX! Meaning whomever was singing did not matter to me, as long as Eddie was playing along with Alex. And one last thing, MY OPINION is just that MINE! So don’t ever tell me to “ Do better”, or “Be honest”. If you have an opinion about a reaction, or a song, speak up. But DO BETTER in respecting others “ Opinions”.

Hagar brought Van Halen's musicianship to another level and I love him for that. The classics are the classics but the Hagar era was great too. Next up for you: Dreams, Poundcake, Judgement Day, Right Now

They had one particular singer between Dave and Sammy, named "Gary Cherone". Who at the time was on hiatus from his own band called "Extreme". Gary is a great singer in his own right, he just wasn't the right fit for Van Halen.
You should check out Extreme tho. Great band from my hometown of Boston. Songs; "Get the Funk out", "Play with me", "Kid Ego", "Mutha don't wanna go to school today ", "More than words". Just to name a few. 🤘😃

Gary replaced Sammy after he was out (the first time). Gary did one album and he was out. When Sammy and Dave did their infamous tour, Gary and some members of the band Boston sang with Sammy on a song when he played Mansfield. It on the album Live Hallelujah. It was a fun night. Sammy was great, Dave's band was fire but his vocals were starting to slip. I believe the last couple of dates of the tour were cancelled after this show. It was Dave's turn to open the next night...

Van Halen never had a #1 Album until Sammy Hagar. .....and to your Quiz....Sammy Had Met Eddie several times before the Auto mechanic ......The auto Mechanic told Eddie it was Sammy's Car and Eddie asked for his Phone Number and he called Sammy...Sammy went out to 5150 and they Jammed several songs....and wrote the 5150 Album in 10 Days and it went to #1 on the charts.....rest is history....

Sammy Hagar’s most iconic song is I Can’t Drive 55. In 1974 the US Government passed a law that limited the maximum speed on the highway to 55 MPH. If you react to it you should watch the music video. It’s a fun song and fun video

Sammy Hagar, definitely the better vocalist. I saw him with his Band "The Circle" about a year ago. He is 76 years old and sounds just as good as he did back then. In 2015 I saw the final Van Halen tour with David Lee Roth and Roth sounded AWFUL!. If the music wasn't so great, which it was awesome, I would have left. DLR SUCKED!

Everyone likes to blame Sammy for the change of music styles but Ed controlled all the music. If you listen to the last DLR album and the first Sammy album it was a natural progression. Several songs on 1984 were in direct style that would have fit on 5150

Another footnote.....Before Sammy signed with a new label....He had to do one more album. Eddie Van Halen (lead guitar), played bass on Sammy's self-entitled last album for his label.

Diamond Dave once said it best - "All Sammy's songs are about love. I ain't talkin' 'bout love."
I feel DLR VH is a keg party at a frat house. Van Hagar is wine coolers on the beach. Both fun but different.
