From the Fair Warning album, Mean Street by Van Halen is an amazing song and in Burch's opinion is a little more raw than their later recordings. He also mentions Michael Anthony's wonderful skills as a bass player that is sometimes and undeservedly overshadowed by Eddie and Dave. @VanHalen #vanhalen #classicrock #reaction

You know……….🥹🥹🥹🥹 I like her. She’s a good listener, paciente and then digest the song 🎶 and analyze every aspect from it.
You know some times or I could say many times you want that you relatives enjoy the same kind of songs or groups that you enjoyed when you were younger. I smiled when she was digesting all the instruments, I remember when somebody was trying to introduce a new song and had to be ready to pick everything from the song.
Was the time when we were hungry for rock music. I grew up in a communist country and the rock music was banned, so I hated tropical music because never use crazy guitar sounds or solos they were lacking too much the guitar sounds and also the dances.
I know that you can listen to Santana band but they were only for Cuban pro musicians to copy that kind of Latin-rock and I didn’t want to hear nothing close to the Cuban music.
Cuba Government put a lot of effort to erase a single menace to their Communist system and the American music was #1 on that list so groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd, CCR and the others not even Beatles or Rolling Stones, no foreign music. So I decided to put my ears so far away from the Cuban music and every body started to hate me, including father and my communist families. Until today.
And I been ssssssoooooo fffrrrrreeee like the song.
      Keep it up girl

Even on this song, his meter is pure icing on that intricate rhythm. Singing in a lower register with that old crooner flair punctuated by his bag of sounds and fun high squeals was just what we needed going into the eighties. They were the best the west coast had to offer and boy, they broke the ice. Love Sabbath but I fell asleep during their show after Van Halen opened.

Im a 60 year old rock guitar player. I got to witness eruption like 78-79 my older brothers album collection. If you weren't there at that time as a youth you will never know the experience hearing that stuff for the first time. As they say, truly dropped like an atom bomb on the guitar community. Have not touched my guitar in almost 2 months until i picked up the other night. Surfing through you tube decided to check this out. Im listening to Ed play and i know every note and every attack on the string notes plucked. Its like hearing this for the first time again 👍

Van Halen was the perfect blend of musicians thrown into 1 pot. Such an American Iconic Rock Band. Regarding Michael Anthony, (Cannon Mouth) as the band called him, his backing vocals were absolutely the magic of VH's overall sound. Mike probably had the most beautiful, strongest back vocal of anyone in rock n roll. Beast of a singer and player.

I remember the first time hearing this song.
A friend of mine always changed his parents house into a real cool party place, when they were on vacation. Well, everybody of us did that several times...
But he had something special: to announce the party he hang a flag in the window on the second floor, so everybody knew...
Result: many people he did not know crowded the house.
Being 17/18 years old at that time, it was of the best things that happened.
So that one night everybody was drunk or/and stoned I heard "Meanstreet" for the first time. For me, being a guitarist a punch in the face.
Next song played was "So what" live from SRV....next punch.
That was when I decided to take over the DJs Job, and because we had records at that time, I played "Meanstreet" several times, as well as SRV.
After about one hour of playing these two songs, a really big guy came to me and said: "Okay, your job is done!" and played both albums in full....
End of the story: the friend stayed with me for over 30 years, playing in a band together (but none of the two songs....respect)
    Love your videos!!!!!

What people rarely realize is that Eddie didnt indulge himself during the solos. Most people would expect Eddie to have minute long solos and throw every trick he could, but Eddie's solo's, while flashy, were like quick bursts, and some were not that wild and crazy. The aforementioned Hot for Teacher has probably one of the longer solo's during the Roth era.

Mike's vocal harmonies were also key, over and above just his skillful bass work.

Michael Anthony on bass & on the high harmonies, and Al was a good drummer.

Mike is such a solid bassist & a terrific backup singer. I think he & Alex gained more prominent roles after Sammy joined, at least when I heard the "5150" album. The first three VH albums have some seriously fantastic rock songs, & among my favorites are this, "Little Guitars", "Unchained" & "Everybody Wants Some". Great reaction y'all, look forward to more VH! 🤟

Fair Warning is the fav. of many rock guitarists and right up there with the first album. Think back to the "Live Without a Net" Eruption solo and remember Eddie's technique for the beginning of Mean Street...simply out of the cosmos! King Edward lives in our hearts, and ahem, Rolling Stone; Ed is # 1 IMHO! lol...DLR is maybe better described as the "Full Bug." Remember the bottomless chaps! Van Haleniacs like me were seriously worried when Sammy took the helm until we heard "Best of Both Worlds," and we knew all was well in the world!

This was from their 4th album, "Fair Warning"....one of their best, musically, IMO.
This album works really well as a complete work, from beginning to end, and is a little bit darker...a little cynical.
So many memories related to this song and the rest of the album......from the end of high school to cruising Main Street with my friends, hanging out and partying.....all those things we did in our crazy youth...we did it with attitude with this, and other music as our soundtrack!

To see Diamond Dave at his "sparkliest" Alexis needs to see Just A Gigolo. And maybe Panama. I also get the feeling that Hot For Teacher might make her blush just a little😉🥴

Always thought that subtle background YOWL from Dave that's low and subdued in the mix, that you can hear around 6:18 here, was a really cool production touch. Sounds a bit distant and haunting in a way.

67 here; I saw all the greats; including these boys: VH w/ Dave: 5; w/ Sam: 3. And I remember that first tour- in Seattle, and when Ed got to pickin'- and SOUNDED EXACTLY like the album, you knew THEN...you were witnessing musical prodigy/GENIUS. And Live?....these boys ROCKED their asses off. Then had bigtime FUN, stage moxie, hooks out the ass....EACH member within the band wasn't a minor player; each was a standout....but they were two different personas depending upon who was up front.

Michael Anthony is a terrific bass player, but his soaring high harmonies were a huge part of what defined the VH sound.
