yeah. I watch some reaction videos here and there and am always amazed when someone will say something like "I don't think Ive actually heard the Beatles but..." What?
This song was during the MTV era when all the channel played was...uh, music. And only music. Van Halen represents my youth (I was 16 when they first exploded on the scene.) I was fortunate enough to see them live and they were incredible. Eddie Van Halen was, in my mind, in the top 5 guitarists of all time. RIP virtuoso. A great band and a great response to this song.
DLR was and probably still is considered rocks best martial artist. That's where his flexibility and jumping skills come from. I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley. I think he could whooop some butt. I love Eddie's smiles when he is performing. I think that is where he was most happy, on stage. Great reaction!
I was 15 when this came out in January 1984. My brother (2 years younger) and I played street hockey and basketball that whole summer in our friends' driveway blaring this whole cassette tape. The whole thing is golden. 'I'll Wait', 'Hot For Teacher', 'Panama', you've got some very iconic VH songs on that album. R.I.P. Eddie.
I was 13, not in high school yet.. Every time my brothers and I would go to my cousins they would have either the record or the tape blasting 😂.. they always got in trouble for that, but they didn’t care. They’d go outside somewhere with a cassette tape and blast it, oops there goes the speakers 😂.. ah man ..
First time I heard this was walking back from class to my dorm room on the first warm day of spring 1984 and an undergrad was blasting "Jump" on their stereo out of their window at about 100db. Can't imagine how loud that was in their room - talk about an immersive experience.
This is a straight up synth track. HEAVY SYNTH. Have y'all EVER seen a lead guitarist glide in and out of such a track with a FACE MELTING solo with such ease? I can't think of anybody who can do it better than Eddie!
Jump was my introduction to Van Halen. I remember strapping my boom box to the fender of the tractor and blasting Jump, over and over again while running up and down the field raking hay. That was a great summer.
You two come across as pretty genuine. Starting to see reactors either act over the top excited or they’re scrolling on their cell phones and looking away. So I’m happy you two seem engaged and interested. Good job.
What i love in this song apart from joyness and positiveness, is how everything changes after chorus when the guitar solo comes, this is really a well crafted masterpiece!..
Went to one of the 1984 tour concerts. One of my all time favorites. Have been fortunate enough to see Van Halen 4 times- 2 David Lee Roth and 2 Sammy Hagar. Enjoyed both lead singers and what they contributed to Van Halen. RIP Eddie 😢
In my era the word "jump" was very powerful in music.😎 Every single named "Jump" or used "jump" in a song title was a huge hit record, all platinum selling.💰 •1968, The Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash"• •1983, The Pointer Sisters' "Jump"• •1984, Van Halen's "Jump"• •1992, Kris Kross' "Jump"• •1992, House of Pain's "Jump Around"•
Ah memories. I remember being at a club here in Essex when this was playing, anyway after a few beers and then every jumping when they said JUMP, well one or two broken limbs later..... great stuff
Running with the devil, mean streets is also a good one. The singer David was heavy into martial arts, explains his flexibility. Also I heard on the radio this morning the guitar eddie played in the hot for teacher video just sold at auction for 4 million dollars.
Great reaction! VH recorded 3 live songs being performed with Roth in 1981 in Oakland. The songs capture their energy and party feel that they were known for in concert. The songs are So This Is Love, Unchained, and Hear about it Later.
Absolutely LOVE vanhalen! I was actually listening to my best of both worlds CD this morning when i saw you had reacted to this.I was like ahhh as much as I want to watch this,I better listen to the real thing blasting out of my speakers.great reaction,as always.I'm happy to see your expanding your horizons, musically.its a beautiful thing!
You both are so handsome and entertaining! Eddie Van Halen was the reason I picked up guitar! Such an inspiration! Guitar god, piano player, invertor of gear..... A big journey! And a very nice and humble guy! RIP Eddie Van Halen!💎🤘👏
David Lee Roth a Frontman’s Frontman along with Eddie Van Halen on Guitars was a lethal combination of Hard Rock & one of the Most Fun Loving Rock Group of All Time. Add in those Killer backing Vocals & that Bass of Michael Anthony & the Underrated Drumming of Alex Van Halen and you have a Top 10 Rock Group of All Time
Yes "Running With The Devil" is a good one as is that whole debut album. You two should really do "Ice Cream Man" from it, just a fun great song. DLR for all his ego stuff was a great front man. He could get a crowd going when seeing them live.
Love this 80s van halen. They were fun. Eddie's future wife on television on a hit program. The more chaotic the world becomes, the more I miss this time. I so wish others could experience what we did through the music we enjoyed.
LOL, DLR wrote the lyrics sitting in a hotel room in LA, the news was covering some guy who was standing on the roof of one of the skyscrapers, it went on for a few hours, that's where the inspiration for the lyrics to the chorus came from, that's nuts you even thought about that, I heard this for 20 years and it never even crossed my mind.
In the late 70's I went to see a British punk rock band (my music of choice at that time) at the Whisky A-Go Go in Hollywood on the Sunset Strip. As the crowd was moving towards the exit I could hear people yelling "Van Halen sucks" and other expletives. The carpet in the club towards the exit made a rounded turn and in a half moon shaped booth sat David Lee Roth with a smoking hot chick on each side of him. He snapped the fingers on his right hand and made a V, The one on the right stuck a cigarette between the V. He moved his hand towards the girl on his left and she lit it. A real rock star moment. I'm 70 years old, sill listening all types of rock and that's a moment I won't forget.
Yes David Lee Roth the singer is like a 3rd or 4th or 5th degree black belt....is why he is very flexible and and can do KUCKS AND JUMP !!! Great job guys
Eddie showing off his Classical Piano Childhood. Saw them on their first tour, they played 4th on a 6 band show. Blew everyone off the stage. Great band, miss EVH!
So as a teen in the 70’s and early 80’s, I can honestly say Van Halen was an essential staple for parties. To me they represented pure fun! Runnin’ with the Devil will be a great choice as this was on their debut album but please listen too Mean Street if you want to hear instrumental genius.
David Lee Roth has been studying martial arts since he was 12. He has earned belts in Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, and Karate, and has practiced sword-fighting for decades. If I'm not mistaken he has a home in Japan where he trains part of the year.
Dave stated (in an interview) that the inspiration for this song was a freeway jumper on the 5 when he was trying to get to LA. I've heard conflicting stories but this was right from his mouth (pretty credible in my book).
Cool reaction! I got this record in 1984. I turned 12 that year. Eddie was a musical genius. I just read that as a young kid, Ed received a drum kit from their dad. And I think Alex got guitar. But Ed heard Al play a cool beat and Immediately recognized his gift for drums. He gave them to Al in full support. Which allowed Ed to try the guitar and the rest is history
Hey guys. New subscriber here & I’m loving all the great content. So much music to discover, where do you begin, right? Definitely a banger band here in the mighty Van Halen!!!! One of my all time favorite bands!!!! Got to see them in 1984 (OMG, 39 years ago, okay 👍🏻 I’m old lol 😆..) Their first four albums is a definite must listen!!!! The guitarist Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020. He’s in my top three favorite guitarists of all time!!!! The great thing about music, is that it brings people together! Don’t know what I would do without it… keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing more reactions…. Keep rocking 🎸🎸🎸🎸….
VH was the original party band. They were also the template for every hair metal band of the 80s, except if you notice the most flamboyant member of VH was DLR. The rest of the guys in VH were pretty much jean & t-shirt guys. The other hair metal bands took it way past the extreme and they all decided to be flamboyant with poofy hair. But the thing that truly separated VH with the rest is that while the other bands had hit songs, VH had hit records, which is why they survived longer than all those 80s hair metal bands that crashed and burned after the arrival of grunge. Probably the only band to rival VH in terms of longevity from that era is Bon Jovi (coincidentally another band named after someone in the group).
This song was MAMMOTH!!! MTV was at it's peak, put this in heavy rotation, and the song shot to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, their biggest hit and only #1. The kicker is, this was the period when artists were spending a record breaking million dollars on videos (ala Michael Jacksons "Thriller") and Van Halen supposedly did this video for like $600 with a hand held cam! Love it.
In case you didn't know, the guitarist Eddie Van Halen and drummer Alex Van Halen are brothers, hence where the band name came from. David Lee Roth the singer did gymnastics when he was young so that's why he can do the splits and jump high. He was born to be a performer as he's a ham on stage but fun to watch.
Although they started in the 70s, they were da bomb in 1984. Eddie’s talent and Dave’s on stage presence were unbeatable. Dave was a big draw for the girls. They used to point to their security as they picked girls out of crowd for their backstage legendary parties. Sex drugs and rock n’ roll baby! They wrote the book. RIP Eddie. I still can’t believe the world can spin without you. ❤
Van Halen songs that were quite popular David Lee Roth singing lead: Running with the Devil 1978, Jamie's Cryin' 1978, Beautiful Girls 1979, Dance the Night Away 1979, Hot for Teacher 1984, Panama 1984 and my personal favorite Ain't Talkin bout Love 1978 Sammy Hagar singing lead: Why Can't this be Love, Right Now, Dreams
The album was "1984'. Guess what year it came out? I was 16 and a HUGE VH fan at the time. My mom was going shopping and I asked her to get me the new VH album while she was there. She had to have her friend interpret the Roman numerals on the album cover to tell it was 1984 but I got the record and I played that thing to death. Soon as CD's came out, I bought a player so I could get all the VH CD's.
1 of the songs that started the break up of Van Halen and David Lee Roth ! David wasn't keen on the keyboard , and Eddie wanted to bring it in !! Need to check out Amsterdam , and black and blue , Both great live videos and it shows why they were called the Mighty Van Halen !!
Gotta agree with Diamond Dave on this one. A little keyboard, mainly in the background, is fine. Especially if they can be triggered with foot pedals so Eddie can just play guitar.
Yeah, def the more poppy, fun, lighter side of VH here with this one. Girl Gone Bad is a MUST from this album. Deeper cut. Faster, edgier & the playing & vocals on it are top notch!
I once saw an interview with David Lee Roth and he said " you can never go wrong with a verb!! " !! He's not wrong, and it's kind of funny at the same time. Enjoying your reactions👍🤘
This might be a little long, so I apologize for all the information. Edward and Alex (guitarist and drummer respectively) were both classically trained pianist. As well as other instruments. Their father was a clarinet player (as you can hear on the song Big Bad Bill - is sweet William now - from the Diver Down album). So, they both grew up in a musical family is the point I'm making. But David Lee Roth hated the keyboards and Eddy really had to push to get them on some of the songs. Other videos I'd recommend are as follows: Panama Right Here Right Now Runaround Poundcake (Please do the official music videos for these - after you do the audio if that's still your vibe.) I'd also like to recommend Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen. I'd love to see your reaction to his song/vided Don't Back Down. His band is called Mammoth WVH, although he writes and plays every instrument on this album and the upcoming one (release date Aug. 4th 2023). Van Halen used to be called Mammoth, so Wolfgang asked Eddie if he could use the name for his own band and Eddie gave his blessing. Again, apologies for the length but I didn't want to forget anything.
You really need to experience the mighty Van Halen one album side at a time. Nothing but pure joy and greatness. Long live Eddie
When Van Halen came to town the whole town shut down.
Rock in peace EVH.
Nobody got that old without seeing and hearing Jump. It's been on the radio and TH-cam for a while
yeah. I watch some reaction videos here and there and am always amazed when someone will say something like "I don't think Ive actually heard the Beatles but..." What?
Jump by Van Halen was one of the very first videos I saw on Mtv back in 1984. Good times!

1984 was HUGE in so many ways!
Album, Mtv, 80's life... I could do it all again 😁 \m/
Nice reaction y'all 🖒🖒
Thank you! Seems like a great era!
DLR was and probably still is considered rocks best martial artist. That's where his flexibility and jumping skills come from. I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley. DLR trained with Benny the Jet...the line in Jump " I have seen the toughest soul around", refers to Benny
Benny the Jet was a bad man for sure. @@Tom-ee3gs
DLR credits Benny the Jet on the liner notes for the 1984 album --- he was a good friend and also Dave's trainer in several martial arts
I've heard this a million times and I never get tired of it because you can always hear something new everytime you hear it.
David Lee had such a great out there personality!! 🤣😁 Dude was funny as hell and just great to be around.😊
I was 15 when this came out in January 1984. My brother (2 years younger) and I played street hockey and basketball that whole summer in our friends' driveway blaring this whole cassette tape. Oh my heart💜! Diehard Van Halen fan here! Still rocking in my 60’s as loud as I can!

Great hit from 1984. My junior year in high school.

You two come across as pretty genuine. Starting to see reactors either act over the top excited or they’re scrolling on their cell phones and looking away. So I’m happy you two seem engaged and interested. Good job.
This is the very first video I ever saw on MTV!! Back when thats all MTV was!! ❤😊
Een fantastic dutch singer
David Lee Roth the singer of the band was also a rock climber that's why he is so agile because of his training for climbing rocks
And a gigolo too 😁
He’s more known for his martial arts skills. He’s a third black belt. Extremely limber and fit
What i love in this song apart from joyness and positiveness, is how everything changes after chorus when the guitar solo comes, this is really a well crafted masterpiece!..
This is a s*icide anthem. So not that joyful
Van Halen , along with a lot of bands from the same time , always put on a great show! Awesome musicians and great harmonies.
The “Mighty Van Halen” in deed! If you want variety, you are listening to the right band! Every song on every album is something different
Went to one of the 1984 tour concerts. One of my all time favorites. Have been fortunate enough to see Van Halen 4 times- 2 David Lee Roth and 2 Sammy Hagar. Enjoyed both lead singers and what they contributed to Van Halen. RIP Eddie 😢
I saw them live in may of 1995 as a supportingact for Bon Jovi, and to be honest, for my taste they COMPLETLEY outplayed Bon Jovi😊❤.Love them❤❤❤❤
In my era the word "jump" was very powerful in music.😎 Every single named "Jump" or used "jump" in a song title was a huge hit record, all platinum selling.💰

Next Van Halen songs should be "Panama", "Mean Street", "Ain't talking bout Love". For a live song, check out the live 1982 version of "Unchained".
Seems like Panama is a popular suggestion 🤔

Such an epic song! That keyboard riff never gets old too me
As a Van Halen fan (they are my #1 favourite band) my recommendation for your next song is the studio version of "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love"
When I was a sophomore in 1984 I'd walk through the high school parking lot and several cars would have this song on full blast.
See the splits & his one leg kick straight up over his head!Diamond Dave was a champion rockclimber & martial artist One real badass( & lady killer.)
Man i remember when this video came out, what a time in music history 😎😎😎
Dance the night away if you want to hear more of Dave's best vocals.
Thx for the suggestion!
That's still from the later VH, keyboards and a lighter sound. They should go back to the beginning, in my opinion, first
The nostalgia is pulling hard today. Gen-X music rules - the soundtrack to our lives is the BEST! ❤
Love this 80s van halen. They were fun. Eddie's future wife on television on a hit program. The more chaotic the world becomes, the more I miss this time. I so wish others could experience what we did through the music we enjoyed.
Great reaction guys! I haven't seen this video in ages, but I just had the same thought upon the opening sequence that I had back then...OUCH!
I grew up with
Van

LOL, DLR wrote the lyrics sitting in a hotel room in LA, the news was covering some guy who was standing on the roof of one of the skyscrapers, it went on for a few hours, that's where the inspiration for the lyrics to the chorus came from, that's nuts you even thought about that, I heard this for 20 years and it never even crossed my mind.
Always great watching a band have so much fun.
The video was first broadcast on MTV at midnight on New Years Day 1984, since the album it was on was entitled "1984"
It was just plain fun!!
In the late 70's I went to see a British punk rock band (my music of choice at that time) at the Whisky A-Go Go in Hollywood on the Sunset Strip. Jump is simply a Diamod in desert ~~☆~☆ I was 14 years when that song , blessings from México 🇲🇽
Yes David Lee Roth the singer is like a 3rd or 4th or 5th degree black belt....is why he is very flexible and and can do KUCKS AND JUMP !!! Great job guys
You sound like a KUCK lol
Oh my, there's so many Van Halen songs you can delve into. They rock.
Love the energy in this. It was part of my walking music when I could still walk. 😁😁
This brings back the days of boys in their OP t-shirts with the sleeves cut out. 1984, I would turn 20 that year. Wow, makes me feel old.
The meaning of the song is basically saying don’t be afraid to take chances and go for it!
Eddie showing off his Classical Piano Childhood. Saw them on their first tour, they played 4th on a 6 band show. Blew everyone off the stage. Great band, miss EVH!
"Aint Talkin 'bout Love" is one of the best VanHalen songs and guitar riffs you will ever hear.
Great reaction! Yes this is Van Halen and this was an all time KICK BUTT Rock performance.
YES!!! Running With The Devil is FIRE!
This song is an anthem for all a generation !
Great band i love these guys
This was the first song the DJ played at my Prom in 1984 ❤
Love you two! Really enjoy all your reactions
Thank you! 🙏
Great stuff! Check out "unchained", "mean street" "dance the night away" "ain't talking 'bout love" from the DLR era!!
This was on radio HOT when I was going to my 1st MARDI GRAS parade. It seemed like Every other song they played 'JUMP'
So as a teen in the 70’s and early 80’s, I can honestly say Van Halen was an essential staple for parties. To me they represented pure fun!
Runnin’ with the Devil will be a great choice as this was on their debut album but please listen too Mean Street if you want to hear instrumental genius.

Yes, Running With the Devil!!! It was the 1st song on their 1st album, perfection.
'Running With the Devil', and 'Mean Streets' recommended. This song was after Eddie started adding keyboard. But they were a Party band.
Dave stated (in an interview) that the inspiration for this song was a freeway jumper on the 5 when he was trying to get to LA. I've heard conflicting stories but this was right from his mouth (pretty credible in my book).

I pulled a hamstring just watching this.
Little Guitars has some good DLR vocals.

1984, as a decade, had some of the most iconic songs, bands, of any decade.
Y’all have to do Dance The Night Away, easily top 3 of best Van Halen songs. It’s so beautiful and melodic
David Lee Roth is a third degree black belt. He runs the show.
Van Halen songs that were quite popular
David Lee Roth singing lead: Running with the Devil 1978, Jamie's Cryin' 1978, Beautiful Girls 1979, Dance the Night Away 1979, Hot for Teacher 1984, Panama 1984 and my personal favorite Ain't Talkin bout Love 1978
Sammy Hagar singing lead: Why Can't this be Love, Right Now, Dreams
For Dave's voice, I always liked, "Ice Cream Man." He's a great front man. He seems like a tough guy to really be friends with, though -
Guys David Lee Roth It happened to be a second dan black belt in Taekwondo That's why so flexible and why he does those moves kicks very very well

Their father was a clarinet player (as you can hear on the song Big Bad Bill - is sweet William now - from the Diver Down album). So, they both grew up in a musical family is the point I'm making. But David Lee Roth hated the keyboards and Eddy really had to push to get them on some of the songs.
Other videos I'd recommend are as follows:
Panama
Right Here Right Now
Runaround
Poundcake
(Please do the official music videos for these - after you do the audio if that's still your vibe.)
I'd also like to recommend Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen.
