DIY Litter Box Enclosure | Through the Wall to the Garage

  • I love our cats, but their litter box takes up so much space and there always seems to be litter scattered about. In order to make room for the new nursery, and to keep it out of reach of an ever exploring toddler, we decided to make them their own enclosure out in the garage. Now they can get to and from their litter box in the garage without worrying about them getting out when the garage door opens. Follow along as we make our Litter Robot its own little DIY cabinet!

    Awesome idea! Hubby and I are excited that this might be an answer to the litter dust issue!!!

      That was what my wife hated the most about the litter box. This is her favorite project that I've done!

    I didn't think I was going to find someone who made an enclosure for this litter robot. Thanks for the upload

    Very cool.
    Two suggestions: anchor the two pieces of box to a wall stud with a couple L-brackets just as a precaution in case a box got bumped and a cat was unable to get back inside.
    And this would have been a perfect time to upgrade the poop capacity. Put robot on pedestal and cut holes in bottom with larger garbage can under.

    Future enhancement suggestion - Maybe a small extraction fan inside big box connecting to pvc pipe and vent it outside the house? Other than that, great work mate. I had my robot outside rear veranda so I did not need the air vent, I made a box for it to sit on so I empty bin once a week for my 3 cats

    I love this so much. Just afraid it gets too cold in the garage lol

  • @mylove4musicsue

    This is a grand idea however in my area, this would be an insurance nightmare, as our garages have fire doors to the house and fire rated drywall. If you cut a hole in the drywall, it would eliminate the fire stop barrier. I might see about an outdoor area. Thanks for all the information.

    • @woodspepperman9344
      @woodspepperman9344 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking the same thing. This would violate the fire code in my area. You cannot have "cat/dog" doors from the living space to the garage.

    • @IamSlacker
      @IamSlacker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not just that but the barrier for the prevention of CO and HC (and any other type of chemical product's gases used in the garage) from entering the house is also gone, and making that cabinet the prime spot for a cat to get respiratory issues and even die.

    Yes thank you for this !
    I was just thinking of using melamine for a base to put the box I have now on.. I'm really, into the idea of getting a robot box.. But, I'm worried about the size .. We would have no choice to build something to hold it .. I wish I had a garage 🤣 We live in under 300 sqft .. But, I do have an area directly on my back wall that we could enclose easily then make a door right outside (like you did)😊 Oo .. a catio 🙂 I'm trying to make a multi use furniture out of it like storage or shoe beach .. We are new to diy and, woodworking so .. Thank you again 👍🏻P. S. Did I miss you putting in vent holes? I'll have to rewatch again 😆New sub here 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @HouseholdHowTo
      @HouseholdHowTo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching! The melamine has been very easy to wipe down, definitely worth it. Something I didn't show in the video that I added later is a small hole in the top that I mounted a computer fan to. It can push air out through a carbon filter to help with any smells.

    • @accidrainn
      @accidrainn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HouseholdHowTo Great idea 💡 About the pc fan /carbon filter
      😊Yea , just now I'm just thinking how easy it would be to just net in the back old "dog kennel" behind the house ..Then they can catio and, safely enjoy the outside & I can just put the robot outside 🤣 Thanks for all the ideas though.. The cutting through the wall is definitely going to be in the plans for sure(which is scary 🤣) .. I'll show my partner & see what he thinks we can do,or .. What's a more viable option.. Ty again 👍🏻

  • @saagarpatel7315
    @saagarpatel7315 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Curious if any smell comes from the garage into the room adjacent to the cat hole? I want to make the same, but am scared the heat from the garage would ‘push’ bad smelling litter air into the house

    • @HouseholdHowTo
      @HouseholdHowTo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Our cat hole is actually right next to our kitchen. The only times we have ever noticed a smell at all is when we have a lot of bathroom fans on inside the house at the same time sucking the air out of the house. My wife is really sensitive to the cat box smell, and she's very happy with the results.

    This is a great video and something we have been thinking of doing! Have you had any cat issues? Also- do you park your car in the garage?

    • @HouseholdHowTo
      @HouseholdHowTo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! No issues to report and yes we do frequently park in the garage. They don't seem too bothered by it.

    I gotta build this..... would you happen to have plans, or dimensions of your box?

    • @HouseholdHowTo
      @HouseholdHowTo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately no plans, but the dimensions are as follows:
      Overall box: 32 3/4" H x 36" W x 37 1/2" D
      Sides: 36" x 32"
      Top: 36" x 36"
      Front: 36" x 32 3/4"
      Rear: 36" x 28"
      The smaller access run will probably be custom for whatever space you're working with, and is really optional. Thanks for watching!

    You should include a vent so that the cat enclosure can breathe and not accumulate smell

    • @HouseholdHowTo
      @HouseholdHowTo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Spot on! I should update the video somehow, but I added two vents with computer fans to pull the stale air out. It did end up making a big difference.

      After spending so much on the robot itself, I couldn't justify the cost for the enclosure. Theirs may look nicer, but hey, it's a bathroom for a cat. How nice does it need to look? Thanks for watching!

    I love this but wouldn't we want to face the box towards entry?? and I am concerned by the noise of our cars pulling in scaring the cat?!

    • @HouseholdHowTo
      @HouseholdHowTo  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could definitely configure this so that the box faces any direction. My cats don't really mind the garage noises, but I can see that it could be a concern for most people.

  • @TeleeFONE
    @TeleeFONE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not to take off anything you are doing, it looks great, but I feel the small hole in the wall can be cumbersome and claustrophobic for the cat and passageway towards the box looks redundant. Maybe you are going for aesthetic or something unique.

    • @HouseholdHowTo
      @HouseholdHowTo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it wasn't well explained in the video, but the passageway was made to give them a bit of space to get all the litter off their feet before coming back into the house. Thanks for watching!

    Against building code and a health hazard. You've opened up a hole from the garage to the house where carbon monoxide can enter.
