  • In this video I set out to conquer the smell of cat litter boxes once and for all. I also find ways to way over complicate this thing for subtle quality of life enhancements, all for the sake of learning.

Love videos like this, and not JUST because we have stank making cats of our own. This application won’t work for us but it is certainly inspiring and has me thinking of ways to clean our “cat room”. It is nice to see woodworking projects that aren’t just making woodworking tools and storage.

Thank you! At one point a few years ago I used a couple 120mm PC fans and dryer ducting for one of the cat boxes, mistake I made was splitting the existing dryer vent to do so. Even with one directional flow, dryer lint ended up in the litter box and clean clothes smelled like litter box hahaha.

Love the box. Love the pullies. Don't love blowing air outside. I was considering doing that but then I did some basic math. A 50 cubic-feet-per-minute (CFM) fan moves 72,000 cubic feet per day. My 2,000 square foot home contains about 16,000 cubic feet. That's the equivalent of dumping the entire conditioned air content of your home outside 4.5 times per day. I pay a lot to heat and air condition my air. Even at 25 CFM it's pretty pricey. Instead, we settled on a dedicated litterbox air filter called Purrified Air. The company says it uses about $4.00 of electricity per year for always on operation. We just cut a hole in the top of the cabinet that holds the litter box, sat the filter over the hole, and it sucks all the air into the cabinet, purifies it, and blows it out the top with no smell. It works really well.

Thanks!! I was worried about that at first, until I realized it blows about 1/4 of what a low end bathroom fan blows outside, it was pretty minimal and haven’t noticed any change in temps or gas/electric bill since doing it.

One thing to look into one day is the "NVR Miss Litterbox" It's a litterbox with high walls that also has the entrance on the side so when they go in they will naturally want to turn and spray against the walls. All of our cats use a top entry box and that seems to help 90% of the litter that comes out and it's also impossible for them to spray outside the box.

After a lot of research and having multiple cats my whole life, i found best thing for me and cats. Plastic liter boxes get scratched and get nasty and hard to clean. I bought stainless steel boxes. There is an initial high cost... but you have something that will last forever. Instead of wasting money on plastic box replacements. Also, litter lifter scoop i so much better than any scoop pet shops sell.
And I use unscented litter. If there is an odor, it means you need to scoop box.
It's like if human poops and doesn't flush toilet.

Inventive, solves a problem I'm certain a lot of people have even if they don't realize it, plus you cut a hole in your house solely to get rid of cat stank. Not everyone would go so far. That's a man who loves his cats. Respect.

I Projects is never ridiculous if it works. Are you going to have a fan around 24 seven? You could put a timer in there and have it run for a short time after the cats visit the box. This could help save some expense.

This video is much better in terms of
    (1) Less fluff (you did still have 1 minute and 15 seconds of wasted air time, in my opinion, at the very beginning, but that's much better than 4 minutes.)
    (2) Speaking is noticeably clearer (It still needs improvement, but if you are aware of it and always improving, I'm sure it will continue to get better.)
Regarding the content: One thing I notice about big and flashy channels with lots and lots of subscribers is that they always show the finished product up front. I think you had it in the thumbnail, but for some reason, it didn't seem to quite work out as well for me personally. However, you'll just have to watch some of these other channels to see what works.
I had one question throughout this... what was the point of the video? These were my takeaways:
    (1) Here is a litter box container that holds two litter boxes
    (2) This container eliminates the odor by use of a modified air purifier and an exhaust system outside the house.
I feel like those two points could have been communicated in a very different video and in a much more direct and shorter way.
It's clear you put a lot of work into this and I hope this doesn't discourage you. I think with some tweaks, this video could have been substantially better. In particular, I think the long segments where all you had was video of you doing something, you could have done voice-over with an explanation of key points.
"Here you can see me cutting pre-primed MDF for the sides, top and back of the litter box. I chose pre-primed MDF because it is easy to wipe clean with a damp microfiber cloth.
Here you see me using a little trick I learned for squaring up sheet goods like this... etc..."
Overall, I think it was OK... substantially improved over the one I saw from a year ago. I think with some relatively small changes, it could be good. Then to get to very good, it'll just take practice.
Side note: I discovered the trick of buying a big plastic tote (like 32 gallons), cutting a rectangular door in the side, and then attaching the cutout piece to the opening to create a swinging door. Then I keep the tote inside of a larger plastic tray with a litter mat, and all of it sits in the utility room. It's not nearly as nice as your solution, but much better for a lazy person like myself.

My dog spins around when doing his buisness. One dog does it in the same spot and choses a new spot next time but doesnt like anyone looking at him when doing his buisness so I have to look away so he can have a comfy one. But if they wake up at night and want to go out they sit patiently on my bed and wait to see me moving or turning in the bed then race up and one licks my face to wake me the other strokes his head back and forth under my chin to indicate they have a nature call so I get up and go out to the green space with them

Not sure why you acted almost embarrassed about making this or calling it nonsense at the end because I thought it was a bit funny but also useful and inspiring to some that will take it and make it their own. Instead of trying to skirt the issue or name of things and if anyone has a cat they will laugh and will not be squeamish or be offended by the names so it is okay to say cat poop and yes some cats also spray at the rear or sides of their enclosed litter box. I did like how big and open it was but I would need to make one modification and that would be to put a panel or slats between the two boxes as two of them like to argue and slap at each other while in it. Your pulley system looked like it worked great but my 13 year old man(cat) would not go near it with the electric litter box so I stay with the regular deep litter boxes.
