It is not so easy to just trust children at their word. They say things too. To me, it seems this child didn't understand the question. Seems like he has a language delay of some sort. I've met even children from loving homes who have pointed to the wrong person and proclaim them as "mom". In the grocery store once, my nephew was 3 at the time, and he pointed to a random man who looked absolutely nothing like his dad and said "look, there's my dad" and his dad was a very big, safe part of his life. So it's not like he didn't know who his dad was or didn't feel safe, kids just sometimes say things that seem a little off.

I mean as a childcare worker who has a degree in my field, I don't think that's that abnormal. Young children will do that, regardless of their home life.
