Omaha Beach, D-Day (June 6, 1944)

  • On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched the biggest amphibious landing operation the world has ever seen - Operation Neptune.
In all five sectors allied troops, despite the element of surprise, sustained great casualties. However, one of them was more devastating than others.
At Omaha beach, US soldiers had the greatest difficulties in achieving their objective.
The price they paid on this beach, rightfully earned it the nickname …. ‘Bloody Omaha’.

My grandfather served in WW2 and stormed the beaches of Omaha on D-day. If he ever told stories of the war, I would always ask what it was like on that day. And he'd always tell me he'd say when I was old enough to handle it. When I was at the age he deemed acceptable he sat me down during a visit and told me his story of Omaha.
He was 19 at the time. And was in the back of row of soldiers in front of him. He was apart of the second wave of soldiers to come in and though scared, he was fighting for his country and for my grandmother who was waiting for him back home. While approaching the beaches there were explosions in the water, as well as distant explosions inland and bullets zipped by every so often getting more frequent as they got closer. He said the sound was comparable to a mosquito flying past your ear repeatedly. When they finally got inland they were met with a barrage of bullets hitting them. He said the man in the front left of the row of soldiers was shot clean in the eye. The man in front of him was gunned down and fell back onto him causing him to slip and fall into the crowd of the fresh bodies. Only him and two others made it out of the boat. He managed to get out by waiting for the right time to move while under the bodies and the other two simply got lucky. He said the entire time they were on the beach all he could hear was carnage, constant screaming, bullets barely missing him. Brothers in arms being gunned down next to him while he moved up. He said that one of the men he had met before the morning d-day had made it up with him. And before they could even make some sort of communication he was shot in the chest multiple times before dying shortly after. A man behind him was blown in half. He said he saw a man crawling to some sort of safety after his leg was blown off only to be shot just before getting behind cover. Eventually, as the fighting went on, word got around of an opening and with due time fighting died down and by the end of the day he was in a safe position. He says that he could hear men crying, some were in the fetal position wishing they never signed up while others just stared blankly while they tried to handle what they just went through. He was relieved to be safe though he said he couldn't stop shaking until the next afternoon.
My grandfather died in 2012. He was a good man.

I'd say the luckiest soldiers at Omaha were the ones who were either killed before they set foot on the beach and the ones who survived and got to make it home. The ones who were killed in the middle with all the bombs going off were the most unlucky IMO.

Apparently the scene where the soldiers are drowning in the water and are trying to get their gear off but then get shot by the MG42 bullets is inaccurate because the bullets only go a foot underwater. But yes other than that it was a very accurate scene to that of D-day

He is saying the scene is inaccurate not the gun . He's saying the seen where there are soldiers are drowning five feet underwater then machine gun bullets are ripping through it , bullets do not do this in water because of friction even at point blank above sea level with a rifle a bullet would not go through a foot or two of water with enough force to penetrate the skin . The Germans definitely had some good machine guns in ww2 , if they didn't it possibly wouldn't have been a world war all to much .

I fully watched Saving Private Ryan for the first time and this is horrifying to even look back to. The people in front and middle when the doors dropped were killed instantly and thousands of shots were fired right when other soldiers reached shore! The movie was very descriptive and did a lot of effort correlating back to the D-Day invasion. If I ever celebrate Memorial Day again, I will make sure D-Day will be one of the most urgent things that I will heavily remember that got us where we are today, a better home and place.

Flew to Paris alone. Rented a car and drove out west to stay in Caen. The following day I visited a German POW cemetary. Next, I headed to Normandy to visit the sea of crosses. I also literally walked on the beaches till sundown. I also visited the bunkers at Pointe Du Hoc. Being inside these bunkers all alone and in silence was eerie. Still, Being alone in all these places brought so much pain in my heart and it was so moving to have visited these places all alone with nothing but with thoughts of what occured in these places. Tony Peppermint though the film is incorrect at first. German defenses, bunkers to be specific, are put horizontally and only aim sideways. This arrangement follows the crossfire tactic and inflict the most kills with the least bullet fired(you can see pictures of them on the naval invasion of Dieppe)
